• Pay is trash: TC at Terminal level for most firms caps out at 350-400k. Tf are you gonna do with 350-400k? Bankers on the other hand make millions upon millions
• You sit in front of a computer all day, while bankers literally meet with CEOs and boards of Fortune 500 companies, literally changing the course of the world.

Finance in general may be more diverse but IB and PE are still primarily male. And high finance is probably less ethnically diverse than tech.

If you’re making this decision purely in earning potential (and assuming you don’t start your own company) then finance will probably have a higher ceiling. From my point of view, however, the earnings adjusted for hours of work is much worse. The lifestyle of a swe is much better.

I also had this decision and went with swe. The lifestyle was the main driver (who wants to work 80hrs+ for 10 years for a marginal difference in comp). But what drove it over the edge was the actual work. Staring at excel for that many hours and waiting for someone to send you edits is soul destroying. At least as a dev you can provide an actual product.
