i would not say must, 1 or 2 years of experience can go a long way but think about how a recruiter approaches assessing you
having classes like a&ds and discrete math provide some baseline competency expectations and upper level cs courses show areas where someone is strong
without that coursework itās very difficult to gauge someone who has very little work experience
if you can make up for that with really strong projects and experiences that will help but yes some places will just auto reject because they donāt feel you will be what they are looking for
