Sounds like a textbook example of a scam. They send you a check to buy supplies, but the check is invalid. Your account will show that the funds were deposited when you cash in the check, but the check will still be under review. Then you buy office supplies from some link that they send you, but it's a fake store that they set up online. Finally, the bank flags the check as invalid and withdraws the funds from your account, so the money you spent on the office supplies was your own money. Then the scammers run off with your money.

It's annoying because federal law requires funds from checks to be made available almost right away, whether or not the check is valid. It might take days or weeks for your bank to verify the check's validity. If it's a bad check, they just subtract the money that they gave you ahead of time. Scammers take advantage of this

That is a valid point. But compared to other engineers being a NG is a risk. You may have a problem-facing skillset, but so do the other NGs you're competing with. Ofc it would be nice if everyone could get a job but in tight markets like this, it's much harder
