hell naw
what was it about at least?
oop
moving a game character in first person with object detection, but only via screen caps no access to game memory
and then throwing in some shitty synthetic data generated with GAN to try and improve mAP
kinda dumb and lame but I had 0 idea how to research going in and my advisor was not helpful at all, so im just happy I passed
@prisma flax is your employer still hiring?
did anyone get an oa or something from figma?
are you still alive bro @gentle peak
17 minutes early today
Expired rip
@gentle peak is you gone?
Let's have 69 seconds of silence for fallen brother

Read job description, make up tell me about yourself to match their requirements. Just gotta sell yourself for the job, recruiters are like dumb AI
guys does this week look promising?
bytedance sent me an email in chinese
show it
reply in Chinese to impress them.
Position Title: Chief Senior Staff Principal Software Engineering Director of Software Architecture and Technical Operations Officer
LinkedIn Premium Tip: You’d be the top applicant.
it’s like when your mom says you’re handsome
imagine having linkedin premium
i got linkedin premium for free from somebody though
same
interned at linkedin right?
👀 Know someone at LinkedIn
O that was sum1 else
apparently linkedin employees can give out 6 months coupons and i got one from somebody
I wish i worked at linkedin for the premium
I just hope this is true.
@rain patio
It's a typo, it's actually firing surge
I wonder if anyone in this server is actually interested in CS
Or they're just in it for TC

I hate this mf
I am praying on that guys downfall
Bro makes me think, I am not hustling enough to get a job and a job is right there
What did I do dude?
Wat, is Bytedance Chinese?
Disgusting.
I couldn't ever work for a Chinese company.
Ni bu xihuan zhongguo ren ma?
LOL, no, I have an issue with the government trying to take over my country, thanks.
Taiwan Hong Kong or vancouver?
But in all seriousness, I don't think Asian companies have the same level of WLB as Western companies do.
Tiktok wlb only one with worse reputation than Amazon
but I would do it, especially early in my career
tiktok is 996 factory
bruh 😭
I want 955
Nuwin has said as such and he works there
Idk, I don't want that kinda thing on my record.
LOOL.
But I'll take Amazon WLB.

Wait, where is this from.
That's right up my alley.
LMAO.
CIA.
Oh god.
Why doesnt Jake's Resume template not inclue city/state in the header, is it better not to include it?
Ni xuexi zhongwen zai nar?
Amazon WLB = Will take a Leak in Bottle
NAR LMFAO.
brooooo

how is everyone coping?
I have a year free from being a vetterin
dang as a vet shouldn't it be easy to get a tech job?
you have security clearance and u have preferential hiring
At my office most people work 6 hour work days max
Awful, wake up every day feeling like I need to grind to contribute something of worth to this society.
Bless, that's the dream. I'd love to continue coding outside of the job though.
But the grind takes the fun away.
Wait are u at amazon rn
Yea i can imagine
No, I'm jobless, I'll fucking take Amazon. I'll take the worst WLB in the world if it means decent pay, I just need a fucking job.
It's time to focus and clutch up a job.... our time will come
😭
I am, every single day.
Yea thats really tough
I got a job offer... sort of. The company doesn't have funding so it's an unpaid job for now. Super flexible, I can work how much I want whenever I want. I have the potential of getting paid if the company gets funding within the next year or two but there is no guarantee of that happening.
I'm thinking of taking this unpaid job offer and just working 2 or 3 hours a week (bare minimum) while I spend the rest of my time searching for a paid job. If the job market is so bad after a year and I still don't have a paid job, then hopefully fingers crossed this company gets funding and I can start getting paid.
that's not a job, that's volunteering
that’s human trafficking
any referrals for the job
don't do that
after you do the unpaid work for them, there is no guarantee that when doing a background check they will say that yes you worked for them, they might just as well say that they don't know you so putting it on your resume might even hurt you because you will fail the bg check
plus you worked for free
don't accept scam
preferential hiring!????

and my clearance is long lapsed unfortunately
I can DM you the email of the guy who is looking for unpaid employees (I am being half serious and mostly joking). You can email him and say you're interested. He is looking for web/UI developers and people with knowledge in language learning models.
doesn’t really seem like it
ive applied to a couple of positions and gotten ghosted
Sounds good! Though @cold pawn is right. Just be careful.
companies get tax breaks for hiring vets, it's why they ask on every single application
My professor (faculty advisor) actually put in a good word about me and another student to this guy. I just wish everyone would have been up front that it is an unpaid job.
I've been through far too many interviews only to be told at the very end that the position is unpaid (or event that I need to pay to work for the company). Job descriptions should be more clear about that, so no one's time is wasted.
A job not honest with you is a job not worth working for. Just imagine the list of lies you haven't discovered yet.
i'm sure having a former security clearance looks attractive since it proves that you can probably get another one
Season just starting dw
I know, I have just been trying for a while though, so it feels like a long time.
Same.
i get you but i believe in you guys keep going!
must be tons of veterans applying for the same jobs then or the tax breaks don’t outweigh the amount of money better devs make ig
probably latter
Which uni are you from?
has anyone else noticed when you block promoted jobs on linkedin there's only like 3 per page 😂
yes
I stopped doing it because I felt like it was blocking some things that I didn’t want to miss
I'd rather not say here, DM me and I'll tell you
Done!
it's sunday
I almost wish we did not have a holiday tomorrow
because then we'd be able to get on with the job search etc
i was looking forward to this holiday, and then i got super sick....and it's gonna pour rain all day long
That OA from Ocient was.....interesting to say the least. I won't give any huge details, but it was one large question. Not LC in the slightest. Very hard in a non-DSA way if you haven't worked really heavily with compilers.
Decided against taking compilers in my last semester to have a easier last semester
Whatever, I still got like half the test cases.
I only had a hour and half to write something like that which I never done before, so I think I did decent in my mind.
Regardless if they decide that is a enough to call me
I hated compilers
Did anyone else receive an oa from vanguard right after they applied or was it just me
auto oa everyone got one instantly
Damn thought I was special, auto oa's about to be the normal process of applying if things dont get better 😮💨
Its so fucked, image spending 2-5 hours of your day to ace an oa for a robot to reject your resume 5 seconds after
I bet hackerrank getting a lot of money from all these companies being too bougie to actually interview😂
If there was a way to fully automate the entire interview process, it would be over for us
I did it, and never heard back with referral.
The unemployment thoughts go crazy at 4am
I was super excited acing the oa, then I came here and found out everyone aced it lol
i feel special because i failed oa
Same :/
anything open up today?
nah
It’s Labor Day
I got rejected on labor day
imagine that
After careful consideration, we are pursuing other candidates. We appreciate the time you have spent exploring career building opportunities with us and ask for you to continue to review open positions on our career site. We wish you nothing but continued success in your endeavors.
thanks could use the best wishes 🙏😭
Do you guys apply to jobs on the weekends ? Does it matter ?
What jobs?
You see any jobs?

Where do you find job postings to apply to? Or what job boards do you use?
LinkedIn and the pinned GitHub repo and #grad_postings_old
it was not careful
let's be honest
it was careful, in the end they had to flip a penny to decide who to extend an offer to

f
I don’t even think they’re “extending an offer” because it says “pursue other candidates” sheesh
What are your salary expectations for the roles you’re applying to? Specifically in Canada
I got a ramp oa 🫡🫡🫡
I was not only a mobile dev, i did mobile dev, but I also did a lot of backend java work and python data sci work. And like 90% of my department didn’t even touch mobile and still had good wlb. I also know several people in AWS who have great wlb
Those tiktoks u see of ppl working 1 hour a day at google aren’t real
So is every bank but they have peanut pay, i work probably 3 hours a week at my current bank
true
Probably ngl
banks dont hire that many people anymore
typically 1-2 tellers are working at a time max
rangers?
zon swe >>> bank
even quants at banks make less than zon swes
unless you guys are talking about bank teller vs zon warehouse
then yeah probably bank
true
Someone on Blind offered me referral then ghosted my DM

Sort Blind companies by highest to lowest rating

what happens if an individual on F1 OPT visa crosses 1 year, who will extend their OPT?
What do you mean?
You get STEM extension
If not you leave
Yes, who gives STEM extension, I know it has to be extended after 1 year.
What do you mean who gives it?
You pay and file for it
It's granted by USCIS
I meant if one is looking for job, and crosses 1 year..
You only have 90 days
So more than that is violation of status
So you will probably be barred from getting a visa for a few years
on your Post completion OPT which allows you to work for 1 year, you cannot be unemployed and be looking for a job for more than 90days. If you are unemployed for more than 90days, you gotta leave. But if you secured a job while not exceeding 90days of unemployment, your employer will be the one to set you up with STEM extension granted that its accepted by USCIS
I think they meant per hour. For example if someone earns 90k/yr but works 3 hours a week vs someone making 180k/yr but working 40 hours a week, yes the second one pays more but by hour the first is way more
You submit the request via school
You cannot exceed unemployment 90 days grace period the day your opt starts else you’re overstaying your visa
Rochester, specifically Henrietta, sucks ass
can't get to shit without a personal car
I finished school in December 2022, but the grad year ended in March 2023. Should I say my grad year is 2023?
fuck it
People have stopped their clock doing an RA, NGO, or any other Temporary methods.. So, I had this doubt of Visa extension
On my resume I've had Grad Date: Dec 2022. Maybe this will improve my chances. I'll take what I can get lol
what is the date and year conferred on your diploma?
Haven't received it. I owe my school monies before they'll send it to me
I'm still waiting on my diploma smh
no joke lol
THey said they mailed it on Tuesday of last week...
Mailbox has been empty
Did someone steal mah diploma!?!?
Can’t you see it electronically?
I'll look into that. Thanks, I've never heard of that
Yoo you made me check mine, my unofficial one says November 2022, I've been using May 2022 on my resume
should I change it....
also waiting for my diploma
Maybe not in your case as Nov 2022 makes them think less time in between graduation and applying
must have not matched a criteria they set in the application
What are y'all Spring 2023 grads doing for jobs requiring Fall 2023/Spring 2024 grad date?
Are you guys getting responses?
I am not even applying, feel like a waste of time
I blew my one good chance last night. Needed like 30 more seconds
I gave up on applying back in July lol
hahaha I may do that
each rejection is a redirection
we die of death
A few weeks ago, I texted my boss from a previous internship, asked how he was doing, and then expressed my interest in working at that company again full-time as a new grad. I asked my manager if we could have a quick call to discuss full-time jobs at his company and he said yes, we could speak later that week. I then asked him what days/times he would be available for the call. He never responded after that. I followed up, still no response. Its been weeks.
Do you think its a good idea for me to call my former boss out of the blue without any warning since he isn't responding to my texts? Or is it a recipe for disaster?
Do it. People get busy. If he still doesn't respond he probably isn't a boss you want to work for.
ngl kind of disrespectful tbh
he should have said no immediately
it fuckin 2023, it takes two minutes to fire off an email, bad news doesn’t get better with age and if you are too much of a coward to follow up with people, you don’t deserve to put “effective communicator” on your resume
just my 2¢
you're not wrong
is leetcode the only way, my mind is fried

i have no life , i am frustrated sad and depressed
when would this pain and suffering end

ah yes...this reminds me of that "make a hole in a box" song
What is zon?
Amazon
Oh
What makes you think so?

september "surge"

its covid its back
I love how you can go to a company’s careers page and they have all this intricate crap like, oh you’re a career transition, or a new grad, or millerterry vetterin, and you go through this pointless marketing page about how the company is friendly and values people with those background.
Then you get to the next step section and it’s:
Join Talent Community
See Open Positions
Like bro, there’s no special recruiter or point of contact you’re just funneled back into the same shit as normal people.
in the end it’s just a pointless waste of time
bars
When they say they value DEI it means you should expect them to ask one question about it during the behavioral interview, that's all!

there is one guy in the back if you zoom in
not a single sport was played or watched that day
I wonder what it smells like on the picture
this is a stereotype and it hurts
Is indian not a poc
it's a color yes, but Indians not really underrepresented anywhere
honestly I thought POC was anybody not white
Regardless, that isn't a diverse set of people in that picture.
Yea, diversity is not just about poc
maybe they’re all LGBTQ+
@vale forge nice website, did you work with theo on upload thing?
fr fr

1 more than us though!
Double down, suggest features and implement yourself
how hard is it to get into lyft?
I just use the app, it's pretty easy
The interview will be tough, it's non-profitable startup lol
they just laid off a few months ago plus going out for ipo and shit
and i see them hiring

wait, they already ipod
just be a driver
dw abt any of that tech shit

lyft is considered a startup? tf
lyft been losing money, it's not a startup anymore my bad though
do you pronounce it like Lift or Lifed?
ur gettin fired?

I wish you the best.

praying for u
Praying for everyone
idk how to fix it tbh
oh ew you’re on call?
its a sweatshop man , he thinks we are slaves available 24x7
oh is sev2 like severity?
was it actually sev2 or did the ceo just list it as such?
we have a severity rating on our ticket system and everything defaults to critical 😂
oh ic
JIRA?
yeah
i checked and it defaults to major
but its like is a gift card reader not working at a single store really a major problem 🤷♂️
we were so overworked my manager excluded Major and Minor from all filters, those never saw light of the day unless someone changed them to critical or blocker lmao
i meant like the stupid usb card swiping thing
and theres like established documentation to troubleshoot it
not racist, abelist
- Turn Off -> Turn On.
yes, and repeat until it works
y’all are on that enterprise life 😔
I’m in mom’n’pop shop land
i just think, if my boss died or quit, the company would go under because within a month the infrastructure would unravel
that's the great thing about mom'n'pop shop, job security
yeah, I’ve worked there for 5 years and barely know shit about our infrastructure
hopefully when we finish our current upgrade the load gets solely off his shoulders and he has time to teach everyone (hopefully not me) his job
yeah there are two and they also keep everything to themselves
and then hire a consultant agency
like bruh I been on the sidelines this entire time
put me in coach
nah that ship has sailed
I’m actually finishing up sth tomorrow I have been sandbagging for a while, was thinking of asking if there was any actual dev shit to do
the problem is I can’t go to our progress meetings and say “I’ve been learning react and aws shit for the future”
yeah but id need manager approval like u said
and idk if he down like that
I got like 3 different bosses sorta too

mb i ask tomorrow
“u got any dev shit ta do!?”
“no, work on powerbi”
“ok”
like tedious? yeah

Are you guys graduating in December? Or did some of you already graduate in the spring/summer and are currently unemployed new grads without a job?
graduated in spring 2023. still unemployed
December for me
Its over
Graduated in August 2022, joined masters several weeks ago, but I'm applying as a "recent graduate"
as far as I know, no-names don't check on your official academic status beyond transcript
Is this group inactive cause everyone moved to #full_timers group?
everyone just roped
rip to @gentle peak
nice place to rest
graduated over summer 2023
If you work at NASA JPL would it be easier to get into a masters program at caltech, USC, or UCLA. Obviously JPL is associated with caltech, and I heard it works with USC and UCLA, so would it help to get into those schools?
yes it would be
ik JHU APL has a auto admit thing to JHU
so i imagine since NASA JPL is associated with caltech that would follow
Did anyone see anything new open up? LinkedIn alerts didn't have anything :/
Nothing for 2023
All 2024
Rope
Anyone know how to define this helper function
year = 2023
offers = False
while not offers:
year+=1
offers = anyOffers(year)
Just apply for 2024
New grad is anyone <1 year
Unless the company is really particular
thats the new ad on that removes linkedin promoted roles
Really, even if it says December 2023 grad?
Yea, I still apply.
Recruiters are very active today, got so many rejections in the first half itself
rip palantir only has jan 2024 start
i would take that lmao
Tbh I think NG 2023 just got fucked over and NG programs are back in full swing 2024
me too
Probably why some companies didn’t do NG 2023 at all or deferred their 2023 cohorts to 2024
Haven't got a single one today
surprisely
Bruh fr
Just my opinion

there's not much in ng 2024 rn either tbf
Some companies deferred their 2023 ng hires to 2024 that could be the reason?
that is not true at all
there are signficantly less openings for 2024
and our openings r worse quality too
@clear tusk why 95
i graduate in like 95 days 😭
Oh ur Dec 23 too
yea!
It’s joever for us
ikr 😭
i think we can find a job in like march or april
but i dont think we're graduating w jobs lined up 😭
LMFAOSDOAS
so real
@rain patio the first 2 exams seem really easy
maybe theres hope!
yea I took 1 course in college last sem for it and it was pretty straight forward
nah we will get jobs trust 🫡
🫡
Same bro
is linkedin dry today ?
We are all expiring that is why.
Yes. I was hoping things would open up today. When will they?
Someone in this thread said a while back that amazon is going to open up their new grad roles this month
Apparently september is going to be popping, though people might have been exxagerating
ngl this seems like some bs
they literally waitlisted a lot of inclined interns
if they do open its going to be really competitive nlg
🤷
Just what I heard
Though if a lot of big tech jobs open up their new grad roles, I do not think there would be a lot of competition
New grad roles already restrict a specific amount of people to a criteria that most people are not going to meet
2022 new grads might not make it, though maybe this might be hope for us 2023 may grads
Did this person say this recently?
Nope it was early last month
Maybe his opinion changed since then too
Well i dont think it was even his opinion, he said thats what he was told by a recruiter
Oh i see
Imma see if I can find the post
Yea let us know
Looks like it is buried and too lazy to find it, I guess theres no hope for us but hope itself
LeetCode style?
How does this give 2023 grads hope
There isn't any
if its true then there would be a lot less competitions for 2023 grads especially if 2022 grads are not going to be able to apply
Problem is that most companies aren't accepting 2023 grads for new grad either 😭
Those are lesser established companies that can't afford to start training new grads right now. Faang type companies usually always accept people within a one year window. Paypal and ziprecruiter are good examples
The dec 2023 - whatever is just a suggestion
PayPal is pretty big tho
Yeah because faang doesn't just include just 5 companies
You obviously don't want an acronym that is 100 characters long
then where do we go
;-;
just apply for 2024
thats what im doin
We need to extend the acronym to include more companies. Something like FAANG++
If they don't accept us for new grad roles then we would just have better luck waiting until the market gets better and apply for entry roles
😩
FAANG--
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think a FAANG-esque company is just any big company that at least has a somewhat decent tech background
Yeah that's the fail safe plan. When the market is good enough that boot camps start sprouting everywhere, you know it's about time
Yeah but we all know bootcamps are a scam lowkey, companies really value degrees over someone that just graduated from a random shady bootcamp that no one has heard of
If companies are willing to hire bootcampers, the market must be pretty good
Yeah but how are you going to get past the resume screening without a degree
Even google is now starting to gatekeep people without degrees
Skills/extremely high demand for SWEs
Pre 2022 was a wild time omg. One of my peers when I was a college freshman in 2019 got a high paying software job and just quit college after 1 semester lmao
yooo a job just emailed me asking for my github
No I mean almost all of their requirements for entry level roles say that you need to have atleast a bachelors degree in so and so
Fair. Though I do not know why they would put that there if they are not going to gatekeep you if you do not have that requirement, especially with google being such a big company and em being able to afford to gatekeep a lot of ppl
Yeah miss those days when random amazon recruiters would dm me about going through their screening(this was back in college)
Companies only care about one thing
Can you OOP
All your projects must look like this
Thoughts on getting a software job at your parents company through nepotism? Job market is so bad I'm seriously considering it but it might be weird being around my parent in the workplace all the time tbh
Is Bloomberg out?
🪢
his profile reads like a NG
Bro he has a PhD in physics
Quant feeder
He's gonna leave his 500K google job
for 900k quant
hmm
wild
sheesh
go for it
you have an easy in
people who whinge about neopotism are cry babies
How many employees?
Id say go for it as well
I'd love it if my Dad got me a job at his company
Me too
me too
he probably wrote it as a ng and never looked at it again
Also on his linkedin he says he is staff but does not put any swe experiences. So did this guy started working at google straight out of college in 2016 and climbed all the way to staff in 6/7 years?
Its possible but definitely either very exceptional or something does not add up. Google is very stingy about promoting people
Heard it can take 6-7 years just to get to senior
So this guy getting it in that amount of time... This guy really is a super 10x programmer
he probably had early access to google bard
Yeah phd must have also really helped
must have been in a niche field
tho suprised he wouldn't include that(I would)
he's chilling at GOOG he probably hasn't opened linkedin in years
Yeah but being in google that long would kill me mentally, would think he would want to try something new
Tho maybe he is just waiting for this tech pandemic to die off
guys are things going to open up this month or is it going to be a depressed month again?
linkedin was literally dry today
Just found out that my off-campus housing for this semester has mold that they failed to clean after the old tenant
I've been sleeping in this apartment for three weeks
I'm so fucking pissed
Bruh someone on the cs reddit posted they went from a swe at linkedin to a swe at revature
I'll take Amazon to Tata Consultancy at this point
were u the jan wave
No I just didn't get RTO
None 😔
2023
Oh sht
Also I'm Canadian
new grad been open
i didn’t have a technical for wells
i just had 1 interview
behavioral only
but they asked some random tech questions
like oop
no coding
gta?
Alberta
gg
Oh lol looks like I've applied to Citi already.... Should I reapply with referral?
it doesn't exist anymore https://jobs.citi.com/job/-/-/287/47985959120

Did u go to uofc 😮
I'm a recent grad from there
Yeah bro
Congrats, do you have offer anywhere?
yoo thats cool, comp sci or seng? Yeah calgary comp called Pason, Ive gotten more call backs from calgary companies if you havent been applying to them .😮
Haven't really applied to any Calgary companies... Got resume rejected by benevity lmao
Who else is hiring? 😅
Pason that's sickkkk... C++ right?
I was CS not seng
Most mid cs program in the country
i mean theres like neo financial, lessthan3, just random companies i see on linkedin and indeed post time to time
nah web dev kinda stuff
oh nice
word their cs and seng program is absoulte dogwater
What's the TC?
80k
nah mcol id say, rent prices are crazy now. and food and eveything expensive from inflation
Someone I know from uofa started at Veeva and is now at Robinhood
why canada so expensive
cause Trudeau
damnn thats crazy, good on him. definitely is a grind though
bro
yeah she was cracked... did a stint at Bioware
one of my friends tried to get into alberta politics
@obsidian crater you from calgary too?
oh sick
Idk why he came here to the US lol
we all want to
Oh ok LOL
anyway guy gave up and is becoming a lawyer lol
LOL wtf
gave up on CS
better than being a politician tbh
sadge
word thats an upgrade
I guess he switched majors from cs
yeah but law needs crazy GPA so respect I guess
I heard Ualberta is good
I was gonna apply there because I found this prof who really fits the kind of research I wanna do
but my gpa is trash
reinforcement learning
🪢
and closed it
I grinded GPA, and I am in the same spot as you.
GPA matters for grad school though

You can go to a decent one
If you have good gpa
how do you pay for grad school
- Be rich
- Loans
- 🪢
You simp hard
Hope someone notices you
Kiss lots of ass
Get a professor to like you and give you monetary compensation for labor
Anyone watch Attack on Titan? Bruh they dropped the ball so hard with the ending. I know the anime isn't done yet, but I couldn't stand waiting even another minute after finishing the last anime episode released so far. I had to know the ending, so I looked up the manga spoilers....bruh i'm so pissed. The story was so perfect, and then the dude had to ruin it smh
Eren was supposed to win. Not because he was justified, but because no one else had nearly as much resolve as he did. AOT wasn't supposed to have a happy ending, and everything was building up to this, only for the writer to chicken out smh.
Eren winning would have been such a poetic ending. A good kid who ended up becoming so evil that even the most horrible characters in the show were appalled by him. It's called poetry smh
Wdym didn't AOT end after beast titan and they got to the sea ?
no there's more lol
A lot of stuff happens, but basically Eren becomes more and more unhinged and betrays everyone. He somehow manages to gain the full power of the founding titan even though he doesn't have royal blood, and he sends out millions of colossal titans to wipe out all of humanity outside of the island he's from
And then freakin Mikasa kills Eren before he can actually do it
Well, Mikasa killing him is part of the manga, it hasn't been adapted in the anime yet
what a let down
Man i started re watching a few days ago and am on season 3
I totally agree i hoped eren would win, but everyone kinda knew eren would have to lose for typical ending
I feel aot got way too popular to end with eren winning
man this is why I hate anime. Most of them have bad stories, and then there's AOT with it's amazing story that keeps getting better and better until the ball gets dropped so hard that i don't even care about it anymore
There are kids watching these stuffs too i guess, so maybe the company made him chicken out or sth
I'm sick of cliche stories and stuff. Why can't people be brave and go all out with an unexpected ending smh
Bruh AOT is like M rated there's no excuse to chicken out lol
Lol tru
is it okay if i don't mention where am i located in my resume ?
or will that be an issue
or disadvantage
you get burned by enough manga series never ending that it forces you to start enjoying the journey more than the destination (eg. Berserk, Vagabond, HxH etc.)
i dont mind reading or watching incomplete stuff anymore
I srsly got aot spoiled from the cs career discord
i dont ever put my address lol
i meant City,State
nah
u dont need to dox urself lol
they dont need to know that till they hire u and offer u relocation
or unless they ask for it in like their fill in ur info boxes
Bro where are the jooobbbbbssss 😭
linkedin seriously needs a 'block company' function
I’ll put in a good word if I get a offer
do you guys apply to reposted jobs ?
yeah, but I don't expect anything out of them
honestly it doesn't seem to make a difference, early applicant, top applicant, moderate applicant numbers, 2 weeks old, 5 months old and reposted for the 18th time
it's a crap shoot
I know Eren gonna be gone but what Eren did what nothing wrong. Im so mad Hange and Levi couldn’t understand Eren. Floc the hero
After MONTHS of nothing but rejection emails, I finally got my first interview request today (technically second but the first one was for an unpaid job so that doesn't really count). So happy
Congrats!
#SeptemberSurge!

Anyone having luck with applying to new grad apps rn as a December 22 grad??
Nope
In this job market, that's better than nothing
what exactly is a referral
is it like "refer me to hiring manager"
or is it like "I endorse this person as a candidate for this position"
I think second one
And it's better since someone u know is endorsing this candidate
so usually you want to target a position and be like "can you give me a referral for this position"
we are expired bro
dumb question but , is CSS a language or a framework ?
not sure under which to list it in my resume
lollll
you can just put it under language
i guess is the closest
tbh, i don't feel you need to put CSS if you have anything web dev related
(like most ppl will just assume its there)
unless u got some like tailwind / shadcn stuff or something lol
just for keywords
ive recieved like 10 responses so far from that new grad github repo
is it worth reaching out with a conneciton request to a "technology recruiter" if I applied for a position at the company already? I want to say something like "Hey I applied for position R99999, I was hoping to connect and get some information on the position."
you are a '22 grad?
yessir dec 22 grad checking in
ayo which repo
that coderquad ?
do i come off as a cracked dec 23
the one that starts with an r, they've all told me they decided to move forward
with other candidates at this time
Did they tell u why or mention grad date?
I've had a couple that rejected me based on grad date
I'm pretty sure the companies that did are the ones that have a specified graduate date
not for you
or for me
or for anyone here
we’re the isle of misfit toys
idk what to do as an international , so my current firm is a fking sweatshop(they don't sponsor) and pay is like intern pay in HCOL. its a fucking mess , 24x7 people are working extreme micromanagement , also i see there is hardly any swe stuff plus people are dumb af whatever they have built is by googling things . this has taken a toll on my mental peace . I hardly get time to prep and apply . Also its 5 day rto 💀 no wfh. work is all random , i have not written a single line of code since i have started like 2-2.5 months in . they make me prepare random reports in excel OR ask me to fix ip address and shit basically stuff not even relevant to swe . Its all chaos . 9-6 then calls at 10 in the night till 12 also sometimes on weekend . I have no issues in overworking or putting in extra effort but its not even swe stuff that i am working on which would benefit me . Due to my visa situation i can't just walk away until i have something in hand since theres a 90 day limit to stay unemployed . I can volunteer though to stop the 90 day unemployment clock but then there's no pay in it (its a question between career and money)
OR
do i just go YOLO and stay at the firm, give no shit about the company and just apply and prep(consquences might be that i might get laid off or something then OR would be asked to leave)
that sounds like hell lol, honestly i would personally volunteer
If you are really strapped for cash try to find another job, otherwise just quit and volunteer.
In both the cases startups are your best bet rn
its more than hell
yea i think
i see
yeah
rn theres no one in this shop so i am able to apply and all
how about i go "idgaf about y'all" and keep preping
?
stay at the firm - find something only u know. maintain it - and dont give a fuck anything else
might be fired or laid off or something though 💀
And then if ur fired / laid off so be it
i see
It sounds the team is small so its more like: find something critical u can maintain / do, not related to spreadsheets.
and just focus on that id say and push back random tasks if u can
and then prepare to hop
i have friends in similar situations tbh its tough
they give me random tasks , so basically lets say theres some random xyz shit that's pending or needs to be done(90% of the time its some bs report or some random non swe issue) . everybody is worked up so that task would be given to me (no context , nothing , just do it somehow)
Id say find something u can do instead and say hey sorry working on something else, cant work on it rn lol
but i mean do what u need to do
well its been since the start so i don't feel i am set up to fail
like sometimes just gotta see is it worth the time
sometimes it just no reason to do it
And the impact is smaller than lets say u coding something else
tbh it just as crud said be more confrontational it a shit place anyways
basically speak up and on the face ?
but ur on visa so is hard
Only you know what's best for you. We can just give suggestions.
As long as you have backup plans for when your actions go wrong, you can do anything you feel right.
Just say:
- Hey what is the actual priority? Bc im doing this and i cant do it rn
Or what is the point
question it
things keep changing every fucking day here , that's the biggest problem
so rn they have given me some random fucking report with which i haven't worked with anytime and acting as if i am the expert . expecitng me to complete it in 2 fucking days
Yea id say whatever they are “mainly” doing they need to be aiming to make money somehow - then focus on that
and just say hey sorry focusing on this
honestly startups / small companies
can be jokes like what ur saying
from when i worked at a startup was the same
i just ended up focusing on making their prototypes
which got me out of more work
sorry to hear tho
def a tough situation
whats the volunteering thing?
Yea if it takes longer just push back too
honestly startups as u said - they dont know what it means for someone to do cs
usually
(it sounfs like a startup)
eod ur on visa so do what u need to do
that def the hard part
initially i was asked to build an entier system , so i was making arch diagrams and shit . started revising react and all BUT then the ceo was like instead of you doing it why not ask X to do it they will do it right , i was like wtf . Also X is gonna make a sample app not a big ass scalable thing . THEN things went fucktons i was being given random ass tasks
i am just making it somehow , idk it will run or not lol
Hey guys,
Can somebody recommend which conference is better afrotech or SHPE for CS? For full time in SWE role
yeah i do chatgpt
but you know you gotta explain the task or atleast give a context , these fucktards don't do that . "you figure it out and get it done" ik no one would spoonfeed but atleast tell the basic thing atleast to get started smh
No , i was never into BI and reporting
Yea it is hard to know, i think here just say ok: this is what ill build, this is what u can do, if u want anything else lmk otherwise this the prototype ull get
eventually ur the only one who knows it xD
Most of the time- they dont know what they want
tbh
So if they are willing to talk is great - if not - just say this is what ill do then
exactly
now he(ceo) paid 80k to X for building a sample app 💀 , he is gonna be played bad ik that but the only reason he wanted X as X's stocks are doing good and according to him if stocks are doing good then it means they are doing something right
just bombed a phone screen
so nervous
im too nervous
my anxiousness makes me lose focus
and i get really scatterbrained
you're not alone
Yea, come at it with a template is how i approach interviews
no i dont stutter i just am not...concise
especially when i dont have a good answer to their question in the first place
For technical interviews / behavioral, i have a way to structure the answer
Yeh, a small trick is you can say:
Hey great question, can you give me a moment to think about that
And bullet point 2-3 things on the side
If you're just rushing to answer, small tip^
i teach a lot my friends to do the same so they have time to think and not just jump in. and the 2-3 bulletpoints forces u to get to the point
id love to STAR but i literally get so nervous that i dont even think
i just blurt out what my brain concocts
it's like i literally lose connection to my own body
Yeh
like i dont even remember 75% of the conversation
Just gotta drill it
My friends and i, i force them to do drill conversations
like speech and debate / the hey can i take a pause
but super common
ull get better!
🙂
everyone starts somewhere
it's just
i know more things than ive done projects on
i understand a 2 or 3 tier webapp deployment
but ive never done one
do one, or lie about one
Like, how would you architect xyz project, and why did you do something vs this
No one will validate you've done it - if you really understand it - then you can lie - if you don't really understand the nuance between different stuff then id encourage to try to build one
Ex. I just build a simple crud app with a google sheet as a database and its always a great conversation
bc im like i had a 0 dollar budget, and i needed to build somethign art students could use if something went wrong
for my school's app
so i just did a vue frontend connected to a google sheet as a database
something like that, and just talking through considerations of why i did that, what id do to scale, why i considered the throughput, challenges, why vue vs react, all that
But id say:
- Coding template when doing technical interviews
- Behavioral, come in with strong template of how to approach questions, can dm me for more details, as I can link a guide i wrote on this
- Practice being drilled - i legit drilled a friend till they cried (oops) but that the sort of pressure i told them they need to get used to b/c it has to be automatic. Ull get mean and nice interviewers, and ppl who are cold, and ppl who just keep asking WHY WHY WHY
it was a recruiter screen
explain
i mean obviously i wouldnt say "yeah just deploy a 3 tier webapp"
that's like
"how do i build a car"
"well first you build a car"
yeah
well lets fucking pray that i get sent to the HM
because i know i can do this
and learn effectively
and explain myself
im just a nervous wreck
yeah,,,,
ive always been like this ok
this is why i have no gf ;-;
😭
like ok
if someone asked me
actively engaged in it, for a year, feel like it hasnt helped
still go because i need to vent
1st step - be handsome
failed
Definitely, I'd say just practice drills for speaking. For ex. I have my gf / friends, just do questions and answers on like:
- why is summer better than winter?
- Is hw good or bad, so on
- Eventually can be like, tell me about your project? and i ask them: why? why? what does this mean? why did you do that? can you tell me why you didn't consider this? so on.
And we ask questions back and forth, quick questions and answers for 3 minutes
and i just force them to talk
And if they fail, we go again and again
Its the fake it till you make it
and you just practice till your brain thinks on its feet
xD
nooooo
its bad
my work? hmmm... glasses
lol
I think apple killed it tbh. Its interesting cause a lot of things we solved they solved it the same way, and some ways we diverged
but they definitely worked on it longer
I think they definitely are just so well polish obvs with their design system / owning everything down to the OS.
@dusty frost@lunar sonnet
ik u guys are right
i think i just need to figure this out and find the best way to somehow get through an interview that wants project experience by somehow explaining what i know about it even if i haven't done it
Yea certainly an issue - there a lot of stuff you can do whether tracking one eye, offering different input modalities so on.
there are considerations like if someone is missing an arm or hands / lazy eyes/ color blind so on
I think most of it is like being able to offer different accessibilities feature that we have on web - and somehow figuring out how to adapt it or come up with new ones
definitely a hard quesiotn to solve
yea one day if i get chatgpt in my glasses ill be happy xD. hhh
when a company makes multiple postings for the same position but at different locations do you guys just apply to them all?
hardly
or just drill lol - my friend was international and couldn't think fast / speak in english really well at first, and we just drilled till they got much faster / learned to mitigate like taking a step back, how to position themselves, best posture, how to keep calm, working on cadence, so on.
Oracle reject
they send emails to reject?
bad
bad
😭
I'm trying to go to grad school
🫡
it's gonna be rough
do schools still need gre?
some take it, some don't
my gpa is shit so I'm gonna try to get a decent gre score
makes sense when I applied they didn't take it
I'd say essay and recommendations matter mostly
from my experience
because I know people with similar grades got into better schools because of a good essay
and the course they select
what course you thinking?
What's gre
MSc (thesis) with a research focus in computer security/systems
I don't think a lot of canadian unis take gre
yeah that's good
