Usually they don't have other benefits like full time employees.
forgot expensive drip
just got my sign on. should i buy this 20k bag or 30k jacket?
but then how am i gonna afford my tesla
am i gonna have to work 1 more month??? really? ?//
I'll have $300 of my 500 stipend after taxes. Should i get a desk or a chair?
will use cardboard box to replace the other
bro I'd kill for $45/hr as a new grad....I'm making $12/hr at a buffet
Aren't you international? o.O
No?
Oh cool then, I wish I could work at a buffet
I'm a US citizen and can't even get a $20/hr software job smh
I can't even get a $15/hr software job 😭
Post bag, post jacket so we know how they look. I'd get a Rolex bc they hold value well
Even against inflation
Bro give up your citizenship, America ain't superpower anymore. My friends in india everyone graduated and got job.
😦
Jacket looks so much cooler
Nah bro relax, even if we start working in 2025 we’ll catch up within a few months 😂 they’re getting scammed in India
Yeah india pays developers peanuts
They also have like 400k cs students graduate every year
So its way over saturated
60k or so cs students graduate each year in the USA. But there's like a few thousand entry level jobs 😭
Gotta be in the top 1% of grads
I certainly am not
Thats not true at all 💀
There are more than a few thousand jobs
And you definitely dont need to be top 1%
Yeah, more like top 1.3%
U guys are doomers
😭😭
The people who are fked are the people at the bottom 20-30%
I have to say I didn't realize that even revature might not be able to get you placed with a firm
bloom did u wrong
they could've grossed up
so that you'd get taxed down to 500
40% TAX ON A $500 STIPEND? WTF
socialism
bruh how the hell!?
I thought the highest income tax bracket was like 38%, and that's only if you're literally making millions
That seems high
And only income above like 1 million is taxed that high
But perhaps stipends are taxed differently
that sucks omg
ewwww nooo
Ideally you want to withhold as little as possible. You want to owe 0 in taxes at the end of the tax season. Having them pay you back is nice until you realize they are holding your money interest free
Imagine if the IRS had to pay you back with interest if you overpay lol
No time for job searching, time to play some Diablo 4
im going insane waiting for ff16 tbh
bonuses are taxed at highest tax bracket, aka 40%
you get the actual difference between the 40% and your actual when you file
wow lol
yeah any sign on bonus/performance/etc will be taxed as so
honestly, reminds me bout how the student loan pause is now gone cause of the debt ceiling deal
Any loopholes?
be rich
i mean i joke but thats just how shit is
billions in ppp loans forgiven while the student loan pause gets ended
which ironically will fuck up the economy even more
yeah
i mean im no economist but dont you want people to spend
fucking restarting student loans does the opposite, and is also like, politicial suicide ffs
i was like 'theres no way they resume student loans, that would go over so horribly with everyone'
honestly i know and understand nothing, all i know is that they're just trying everything they can to prevent the economy from collapsing and all of this is duct tape
christ, what a joke
Who the hell is spending too much
Day in the life of swe Tik tokers
housing crisis is pretty much because of wall street and corporations hoarding property
but man bay area pricing is something else
are you a millionaire bob
No, but my sugar queen @pine topaz is
Your sugar queen does not make FAANG TC
I feel sorry for you

💀
My sugar queen owns FAANG
what kind of lc questions did zon ask you
bro i had an interview like that too
so dumb
the guy even asked me why i "only have 1 internship"
bro this ain't FAANG...get off your high horse smh
I interviewed for an internship once and i was asked: why do you not have an internship yet, why don’t you have your high school grades on your resume, why is it taking you 4 years to graduate
some things haven't changed
If I can do leetcode mediums in a reasonable amount of time, you think I'll be able to get a job when recruiting starts up this fall?
Because I didn't start applying until junior year 😭
I thought internships were for seniors
To be fair, I got the internship because I was about to be a senior lol
Hey guys,
I'm planning to graduate early i.e by December 2023 and I would ideally like to start working January 2024. Do you guys know when does the hiring for Jan '24 roles start for fresher SDE roles (Master's)?
“I was focusing on my school work” there’s your answer for next time yw
they wanted to hire someone who would be graduating soon. They told me that their goal was to hire me to be a full time employee. I thought I was all set....then I got laid off 6 months later because the company's clients cancelled a bunch of projects and they had to downsize or something
I'm not entirely sure, but people keep throwing around July/August 2023 as the start date for hiring for Jan '24 roles
they are slowly starting to roll out now. but mostly around august ish
Oh okay, makes sense. That means that we should be interviewing by the end of summer?
Man I really didn't want to LC whilst interning in the summer tho 😦
Sounds like a plan!
Does anyone have a sheets template to track applications?
i tracked apps for a bit then i gave up lol
i only started tracking apps where i got a callback
bros i fricken did it
i got the state gov job app submitted

been looking at it since 5/17
Congrats!
is a 95k base + 12.5k sign on good for entry level right after finishing undergrad
That's very good
pretty good, congrats
😭
Bro how are you all getting jobs wtf
Did u apply earlier or something? I didn't start applying for jobs until March 2023, and I graduated in May 2023...
😭 I think around late feb my inbox got pretty silent (compared to months before)
ok I'm just dumb lol
I should have applied so much earlier
I'm not some super genius, but I don't think I'm terrible at cs. I did graduate with pretty decent grades and 1 internship after all...
damn
why didnt u apply earlier
i feel like if u had an internship before u would know to apply earlier
We are moving forward with other applicants that more closely align with the needs of this role, but please make sure to stay current on newly available career opportunities on our careers site.
Bro this is like a starter career job and I get rejected from that haha

I did my internship senior year lol
When Amex rescinded you and now you live in Arizzona's DA ZONE
if I had applied for new grad 2023 jobs, I probably wouldn't have had my internship on my resume. I didn't even get the internship until the middle of september
@pulsar mural do da ZOMBIE walk
Not yet...
but im praying everyday
Happy friday ❤️
ah that makes sense
yeahh ngl my last interview was september 24th but also the economy is really bad rn
I hope there's a big hiring boom this fall. Anything is better than right now
Nah screw 2024 grads lol. I've had more time to grind leetcode while they're worried about classes and graduation
I'm getting that job no matter what. 2024 grads will have to wait their turn
lol
i think it depends on where u live
PRAY GOD PRAY GOD PRAY GOD BESTOW JOBS UPON MYSELF AND ALL OF THOSE LOOKING FOR JOB HERE PRAY GOD JESUS

I don’t like that my company uses bitbucket and my contributions don’t count towards my GitHub progress 🥲
What company?
Publicis Sapient
That’s crazy
🥲
they were known to be doggy before
im so sorry fr
keep looking bro
from what ive seen, it just means theyre quiet rescinding
So I should assume I don’t have a job with them even when 2024 comes
yes, always
you go on r/cscareerquestions, its basically the same advice
im just regurgitating what more experienced people on there have said
Thanks I already started looking but this is looking tuff I have no prior work experience and I’m not a CS major
Hopefully lightning can strike twice for me🥲
also here

maybe make post on linkedin? my friend got google moonshot ft cancelled and he made linkedin post about situation and got recruiters dming him
I fucked up I rejected an interview at a bank to take their offer because they had me so convinced they were ready to have me
Learning from this mistake
Did your friend have prior relevant experience ?
yeah
but i think its still worthwhile
posting
cuz it might get some traction
does github progress even matter tho tbh?
lmfao, mine is like all white
how about just 2023? :
burnt out many times doign school and internships at the same time too, worst period of my life
leetcode activity catching up to github
dammmm
my commit are on companyus repo sadly
as you can see april was a sweaty month. that was when i was supposed to be studying for finals. clearly i was not
wtf were u doing
not touching grass....
clearly
Doesn't matter, no one cares
All that matters is passing the interview, they ain't got time to look at your GitHub

yess, Im sadgining because trying to beat joncs 2023 leetcode commit
DN
they wont anyways
your acc gonna be seperate from personal lol
no need to buff up my gh now that i have work exp
and there should be state madnated touch grass time
@timber rock addition to your meme tempalte?
that period in the summer till jan is for my senior design fyi
🫡
Just got another interview invite but I already have a job. It’s hard being me 😮💨😮💨
mans cracked
i gotta be like bro
wtf is the blackrock 2nd question, even google doesn't give anything
has anyone put freelance work on their resume in the experience section?
someone advised me to do so instead of putting in projects to explain what i've been doing in 2022
why wouldn’t you? its work you have exp doing
you can discuss what the freelance consisted of
I mean the question becomes how I do I spin that
stacks and whatnot
I basically did this
but for title I went for "Full Stack Developer (Freelance)"
is the freelance part necessary or is it better to put that information elsewhere?
I think you can also put it as Contract work too iirc? Not entirely sure
Contract sounds better, right?
idk i just know that some people do contract work and it works out for them
I would say so, or you dont have to disclose it either - But Id imagine if the company you worked for cant be googable it can raise some questions
@pine topaz
uo @pine topaz
uo @yahkuna Matada (yahkuna simp)
@fossil jewel are u at work

🪢
recruiting since march, graduated from an honors program at a T10 cs school with 2 internships, 1 at google, still not getting any interviews
is there any hope at all?
join defense?
I've been told that it's a resume issue if you aren't getting any interviews, but honestly at this point it's anyone's guess wtf is going for entry level SWE 😭
Are you applying everywhere or only at competitive big tech companies?
approved for return offer but dropped from process when they paused hiring
I see open positions in defense for new grads everyday
i’ll drop my resume in the channel later when i take out personal info
go sell your soul
they'll hire anyone with a BS that's a citizen and can pass polygraph
where!?!?!?
like anywhere on linkedin
where are these mythical defense new grad jobs
oh linkedin...
i swear 99% of jobs on there are fake
or expired already
but show as "new"
At General Dynamics Mission Systems, we rise to the challenge each day to ensure the safety of those that lead, serve, and protect the world we live in. We do this by making the world’s most advanced defense platforms even smarter. Our engineers redefine what’s possible and our manufacturing team brings it to life, building the brains behind the...
rip it's a C++ job
That's most defense jobs
u guys take into account langauge when lookin for job?
Yeah lol. I hate C++ with a passion. I'd rather mop bathroom floors than use C++
You wanna join the FBI?
dont
oh damn
im suppose to learn c++ before i start internship next week
modern c++ is okay, but chances are you're going to need to use legacy c++ at defense jobs
legacy C++ is just trash 😭
feels like most ppl ya
how are you gonna apply to a c++ job without any c++ experience, aint no way you’re gonna get hired
lot of the time ive seen them say any oop lang exp
yeah ig that’s like the one caveat
but a lot of them don’t have that
at least the ones I see
lot of ppl aim for like at least 1/3 of the reqs listed and then like ok apply
oh okay havent encountered that yet
like when they talk about cmake and all that extra shit im like aint no way
ewww cmake
How much harder are new grad interviews/processes compared to intern ones?
no personal exp but it seems like its generally a lot longer
more rounds
for big tech companies
30 min with explaining the solution?
This gives me hope. I applied for jobs way too late for new grad 2023, but I should have a decent shot with new grad 2024 jobs
I didn’t know that acronym
harvard yale princeton stanford mit
Yeah I searched it
I just found out that IntelliJ was made using Java swing omg. I'm using swing for a project right now! Muhahaha
Now I know what's possible with swing
When will the 2024 grad channels go up?
😵
some ‘22 ppl might be lookin
Guys, when do you think new grad roles for students graduating in Dec 2023 & May 2024 open?
June earliest, most end of July - early August
Alright thank you so much
Apply early and often. The time is almost upon us
on a scale to 1-10 how likely am i to get a postion that according to Linkedin thousands of applicant applied to and im currently in the final round?
if you got to the final round, that's impressive. I say it's definitely high chances
not guaranteed, but not 0
yeah for square, i feel like at this point if you do really well on the techinal round it all comes down to if hirining manager likes you
😭😭
Friends, been a while since I had a resume review.
Please check #1114394071436378284 message
Disregard the app count and just do your best, that's all you can do
No point speculating
^
Does anyone know what Ramp's deciphering message question is in their application form? It's really confusing
Hint: Look up Base 64 decoder
remember when this entire discord was passing around ramps cypher answer
in the end they hired like 5 people
that's crazy amount of applications
yeah international 😭
Great resume, but being an international right now is just so hard
How did you even find 1500 applications to apply to
I applied to over 300 in about 2 months. If they started applying back in July 2022 or something, 1500 sounds possible to me
damn just looked at linkedin for my area, 0 real jobs
like maybe 1-2 postings, and then like 10 staffing agency posts for the same job
what's your search term on linkein
Software Engineer
oh lol
i search "software grad"
saves me the time of sifting through all the BS that I don't qualify for
I had no idea that was a thing
I had to cuz this filter is complete bullshit
Is 2023 december over or is there a repo that is still tracking it?
Forget repos, use LinkedIn
forget linkedin use craigslist jobs
Did anyone do snap apprentice project on-site interview?
New grad + 2-3 yoe jobs
I'm ngl dude. If you can't decipher that, you're not going to pass their interview
Asking for a friend - those who interviewed with Google, how hard was your phone screen. Their LC list is crazy hard
You do kurksal algorithim + 2D DP approach
You could optimize it with red and balck trees if youd realy like
i don't even know what red and black trees are 😭
which level is this for?
Ask if you can use Bard during the interview
If u need me to explain that, you’re ngmi
That ng is ngmi
I heard multiple people say their backend interviews involve CTF concepts
@ornate cliff is that true?
not ctf concepts no
the WAY you solved for the flags
nothing to do with security
what's ngmi?
Yes
So @dusty basin is still right in this case, if you don't understand how to solve them you're not gonna pass the interview
If u don’t know then ur ngmi
not gonna make it
ohhu
if you choke on your ramp interview you're ngmi
Did u make it yet @grizzled bronze
Soon
we're using /fit/ terminology for getting a job?
whats next? dyel: do you even leetcode?
Not gonna make it?
Bruh why does the blackrock oa not even have the auto highlight the matching bracket feature
Is it just me or did they not even have a custom input either?
oh no im about to do blackrocks code test, what else is wrong with it
u can either look at the test case/compiler output or look at the code since drag bar overlaps instead of shifting the other screen to a smaller/bigger view
whens ur start date tho
what visa r u looking for
damn same as me
i think u should reach out, but tn entry is at most 10 days prior to start date
so they might be waiting it out lol
yea just ask in case but dont be to worried cuz it seems the lawyers are indeed pretty slow
Which role is this for?
they're still hiring for NG?
Oh is this for those who are graduating in 2023 May ? or 2024?
Lfgggg
bro we dying out here
scared for 2024 grad
It'll probably be better for you...maybe
u think so?
All these midnight rejection notifications I have to shut down my phone before sleeping now
Make the most out of the fact that you're still doing internships
yeah aim for a RT O
Yep if I can get a return offer to my intern I will be so happy
MY intern company pays over 100k in Kansas City
Hard to beat anywhere else, cost of living is lowest in the country
if it’s a place known for given the offers then just do your work and be a team player
Ya they said they hired everyone except one person back last year and there’s interns starting with us tomorrow that are new grads return offered from last years interns
So they are certainly the type to pull in ppl from intern which is a reason why I went with them
yeah usually that one person could just be a walking red flag lol
which company is this?
jpm gave everyone RTO except super obviously toxic people
yeah they’d want to bring people in
not everyone wants to work in Kansas
Ya they have no new grad hiring and yes not many talent to pull from
The job posts they list are always for 5 YOE devs
your concern would mainly be about stability in that case
but if they’re not overhiring then they’ll be fine
^ This. All the people I know who have a job right now got RTO.
Have any international new grads even gotten any entry-level positions? Or know someone who has?
I need some motivation lol
can't believe no one has 😭
everytime someone new joins and asks where the jobs are
they dont know
Cheddy crying right now
There are like no jobs anywhere except defense for entry level right now lol
for 2023 people
2023 interns have already started
So 2023 is kind of done

my recruiter says SWE is done
2024 new grad recruiting starts in about a month or so
i'm so scared 😭
gotta fight off all the 2024 grads for a job
guys my recruiter (all companies) says the 2023-2026 seasons are done so don’t bother applying ok thanks
there should be a law where if you don’t get a job in your grad year you are banned for life
my recruiter says hc got reached up until the birth of your first child
what dfk is HC
Hotal comp?
heez cutz
head count
makes sense lol
aka the number of people they need employed under them at any given time or somethin
i mean there is @median thistle that is a new-grad foreigner and he landed some new-grad job and SoFI intern but he went to a T10 uni in california and graduated last year
after that, no more hiring
bro what if some of the SWEs were to disappear in my hometown conveniently leaving some vacancies open

omfg mobile
I have like 3-4 big companies and they all have to have some sort of IT dept with some SWEs
there’s even an embedded company
what if all the 2024 grads conveniently got COVID 20 and were too sick to apply for new grad roles
that does like cranes and shit and needs c++/linux devs etc
ya same there's one embedded company near me which is Garmin
they are ALWAYS hiring but i dont know shit about embedded
i even interviewed once and got rejected after final
im abt to reach out to that company and ask for a job or some direction on getting hired lmao
you live in Wisconsin right
I wouldn't fully give up hope tbh. I know people who graduated in 2020, and landed new grad roles as late as August/October
So you have to refocus and apply to smaller companies but it's definitely possible
tbh i think i only got interviewed because I had my address as Kansas City
Garmin is also weirdly GPA obsessed
ohh ya i have a 3.8 gpa and they made me submit my GPA to the recruiter directly also lol
they pay so well though
find me a new grad that is proficient in C
they were doing 30/hr for intern and 3k/month housing and a lot of benefits
Me

I should have taken that mf OS class tbh
how tf do u get profecient in C
I worked in real time Linux systems at my last internship
C is easy
like every other new grad
was a literal “build an os from C” class
C++ is hard as fuck
depends
c++ is easy if your doing your own small projects or leetcode, C++ is tough when it's a production scale application and all this legacy code is mixed
Almost any language becomes hard at production level

But C++ is the worst of all of them difficulty wise
but C++ is very hard
it's not even C++ they care about though
i have practice in C++, they want C
learn it
learn to code
im out of time lol i just new-grad prep at what im good at nowadays
Hey guys, I have a few queries around the EAD card (for international students)
- If I opt for premium processing by paying $1500, then in how many days does the EAD normally get approved?
- If I have already paid the initial $410, then can I opt for premium processing now?
- If I opt for premium processing now, will that be in addition to $410 that I have already paid before?
To answer your 3rd, yes it will be on top
who hired you decaf?
Don’t quote me on it but if im not wrong then even when u initially apply and opt for premium, you pay the actual+premium fee
No one. But this happened with one of my friend. He got an offer that required him to join immediately but his EAD card did not arrive by that time and his offer got rescinded since the company was not ready to wait.
Another friend of mine who opted for premium processing said that his EAD got approved within a week, and delivery of the card took another week. But idk if that's an anomaly. So wanted to know from others as well who opted for the premium service. Because Ik only one friend of mine who paid for premium
ah
Oh, okay
I applied for my EAD in the second half of April. My friends who applied in the first week are still waiting for the approval. The ones who applied on or before March end, got their eads approved within 30 days
Since then, the approval process has slowed down a little bit
I think you're allowed to stay even if your EAD is pending if you applied before the 60 day period
From this I understand that if u filed for your opt before apr 3rd, ur premium req will get rejected
USCIS is so cringe at times ngl
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today the expansion of premium processing for certain F-1 students seeking Optional Practical Training (OPT) and F-1 students seeking science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) OPT extensions who have a pending Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and wish to requ...
so many rules and conditions just designed to make life hard
Thanks for sharing @worthy aspen
Has anyone ever tried contacting their customer support? What is the wait time and whats the best way to reach out to them? Chat bot, email or phone?
Also i applied on the last day of march, i got my ead around the 20th of May
Yes. The ones who applied in March, got within a month
You should be getting yours within the next 1-2weeks if u applied by the first week of april
Oh, ok. You got in a montha and a half
I applied in last week of april 💀
Yeah my girlfriend applied 2 days before me but we got it the same day

You can expect it in June or first week july
Shouldnt take more than 2 months max
And like someone said here, as long as u applied for your EAD, your grace period doesnt count. Even if your EAD arrives next year, you can stay
Happened to many folks back in 2020
Got their offers rescinded too tho
I honestly dont know how to survive this market, cant see how i’ll even get to a final round by the end of my unemployment clock😂
Yeah all of unemployed 22 even if they dont qualify + us + 2024 kids in one pool
yes

Gotta pack up and dip, technically you can overstay, no ones gonna come for you but you lose status
Yeah theres no good in that lol
how do u immigrants even afford a place to live here
i cant imagine being here with no family to help u or subsidize any costs and no job
Unless your American born child sponsors you a greencard at 21
if your hot
meh I'm gonna gtfo to Canada once I run out of OPT
it will help if u come from a good country like some of EU and Japan/Korea lol
Whats your strategy to get sponsorship there?
beg
If u dont have express entry, you need sponsorship
Ah, fair
They'll transfer
idk man isn't Canada like even lower paying and harder to get jobs with
market in Canada sounds like chaos
yeah but
would you rather make $80K in Canada
or live in some shithole 3rd world country
if u failed in the USA idk how you'd succeed in Canada
Yeah fam from where i come, freelance devs make 500 per project lmao
Or on the upside 5k per project
idk id live in 3rd world country and try to make some $$$ on my own
you haven't lived in a 3rd world country lol
i have tho
?
it sucked but i had a lot of money
so it was better everything is basically super cheap/free to me
like i couldnt even find stuff to spend my money on unless i brought something like a car
Did u work as a freelancer?
Or an actual job
I don't care if I'm like rich af
if you got money then sure but making money from scratch in third world country is pretty damn hard lol
I don't want to live in a backwards ass society where my neighbors believe in religious nonsense
no i had my own money from working in the USA and my dads money from also working in the USA so it wasnt too bad. Although i hate it now and would never do it again
but while it lasted it was a pretty chill way to spend 18
i went out with my friends all the time to some pretty cool places
Yeah you had that US income. If u earn 3rd world income, reality sets in super fast
Tbh i wouldnt mind moving to singapore or hk
Looks pretty nice
idk where i would want to live outside the USA
Singapore is amazing, one of my favourite cities I’ve been to
it's just so big, there's so many cities i haven't explored yet
Plus when I can be making 100k+ at 20 yrs old and every other country you'd be lucky to get that by 30 it's just like...vacations to cheaper countries for a week are good enough
When it comes to the US, I’d ideally like to never leave nyc tbh. Id consider CA, FL and TX tho
Exactly why internationals dont wanna go back lol
NYC is a nice place to visit
Not a a great place to live
It's so fucking expensive
🥺
i would have that SWE money if i moved there, but i would probably need to build up to like 5 yoe or something
Yeah things got way too expensive in the last 2 years when it was already expensive
truth it's gotten harder
not ideal
Ya it really only makes sense if you are a couple and both of you make 100k+
My 1k month rent lease expires this month and now the same apartment goes for 1.5k💀
how do u pay for that lol
as a american i am hard broke and have to ask my parents for everything rn. I'm starting an intern but it's 20/hr for 2.5 months i need more income somehow. Need to land a new grad job soon

i wouldn't live there forever, but a year just for fun at some startup tech company paying maybe 200k-300k would be worth it
still years out though i doubt any NY company would hire NG that much besides the known big-tech/quant places
better if your at 5 yoe
😵💫
I start in sept

Doing an internship at some random ass tech company for monies starting on 12th june tho
u guys should move to uk ~~ when ~~ if you get deported
we have jobs!!
R u sure
Why don’t all these immigrants go to UK instead of only choosing USA and Canada
Very cringe thing to say
he’s not an immigrant, born and raised in uk
so 2nd generation
hearing the "they aren't british" shit is pretty common here and usually comes from the extra racist crowd so my bad if that's not what u meant 👍
how's the market for jobs in the uk?
also do ya'll follow the same resume format as here in the US? By US i'd reference Jake's resume
we now have an ethnically indian prime minister and a pakistani first minister in scotland which is pretty funny if you know the history of the british empire leaving india lol
bad bad bad but not as bad as the us
British lol
resume format is exactly the same yeah
the uk has a visa for graduates from some top 100 or 50 unis that I'd qualify for
so I've been wondering how to knack a job there
yea i think its 50. they have a list somewhere on the gov website
do you think companies there value aws certifications?
or certifications of any kind
ig its just a US thing, some big consultancies value them big time
cloud knowledge definitely helps but i dont think certs are that useful, at least for new grads
i got an offer from a big consultancy and they did ask a lot of cloud questions
let's see if I ever end up in the UK, god bless
sponsoring isn't that hard here so you'll find a lot of companies are willing to sponsor, even smaller ones
how's the average entry level pay with folks w a masters degree
and is your take home pay enough to get u a decent standard of living
in london you'll want at least 50k if you don't wanna have flatmates
that isn't hard to get at finance or tech companies
50 before tax?
yh
and do you guys apply through Linkedin to find jobs? What sites do ya'll use
do you get callbacks from linkedin?!
for jobs based in the UK?
yeah

oh dang
I have 0 yoe but a poop university
I also didn't start applying until 2 months ago 😭

yeh this is why ur not getting anything lool
makes sense lol
so where you go to university helps in the UK
I have to wait for new grad 2024
i'm sure they'll take just about anyone from a US university probably
hell nah
yea for sure
thanks for the insights, I hope ya'll are still around here in the server if i ever decide to move
no problem
if you go to like mit or similar then sure, you have a shot to compete with the oxford/camb nerds
but outside of the top dogs, us unis are completely unknown here
Is the UK that competitive? I thought they all wanted to move to the USA lol
cuz USA schools = good or somethin idk
i mean oxford is the best university in the world for cs
and cambridge/imperial are up near the top too
it depends on the specific ranking but yes, it's always at least in the top 5
we mostly go by the times rankings here which have 1. oxford, 2. mit, 3. stanford, 4. eth zurich, 5. cmu
damn bruh
I'm just a trash tier grad
mine is 24
I only hope that the leetcode and project grind gets me a good job soon
source?
i've never seen a uk university placed anywhere near the US when it comes to CS
top schools are almost all MIT/Stanford/Berkeley etc
times and QS are generally regarded as the most accurate

here we go
Oxford is #5
I just wish British SWE salaries were good
I would move there
How bad is the cost of living in the UK?
I heard there's massive inflation since 2021
Was pretty bad in the US until they jacked up interest rates
Eggs went from $5-6 to $1-2 again
we're in a cost of living crisis rn and our conservative gov is doing jack shit to fix it

the average energy cost was £4k a year early this year and rn it's at £3k
wow wtf
3 years ago it was like 1k
i had to go ask my parents for a loan cause i literally could not afford to live
now compare average us vs uk salary lol
ok thats too low
yeah
its really like £29k which is what, $35-40k
According to the Office for National Statistics, the average UK salary is £26,266, while the latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average annual wage in the United States is $53,490 per year (about £38,941).
muh free healthcare
In 2020, annual premiums for health coverage for a family of four averaged $21,342, but employers picked up 73% of that cost.
So take another $7K away from Americans
Add to the fact that health insurance doesn't cover everything in the US
Not so bad in the UK
How good is public transit in the UK?
Cause Americans basically have to own a car to participate in society
I think if you add health insurance + car costs, UK is probably better than the US
For the average joe
inside london its pretty good, outside london most people need a car
but in scotland buses are free for under 22s so it's pretty nice

yea i agree
I heard there is this dangerous place in London
Called the square mile of the city of london and it's full of crooks
thats where my office is
no comment
literally me
Balls, NYU is top 20 yet no employer cares for it
i mean it's based on their research so it's not exactly super accurate for their bachelors programmes
but at least in the uk there's definitely the thought that if you go to oxford/cambirdge/imperial, you are top tier
and wont struggle to get interviews
True, though I think the ranking doesn't matter that much. It's the brand of all these old and famous universities which sell.
but will you struggle in the interviews?

sure
outside of the top 20 or so the rankings get a bit blurry anyway, i mean there's probably not a huge difference in perception between number 50 and number 70 for example
British lol
Hey guys!! Linkedin vs indeed vs glassdoor vs simplify vs handshake? Which is the best website to apply for Ng roles?

Idk I haven’t turned it on yet
Can’t tell it’s just sitting there but it’s an M series for sure
Need to go through orientation
i think the one im getting wont be M
screaming crying throwing up because i don’t have a job that gets me a mac book pro
how do you
get an
interview
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
literally nothing for a month and a half
Spam people, literally nothing happening with cold applications
Could be worse, you could be working at a company that uses teams and windows
I have an upcoming interview where they will ask me "higher level" questions. Asides from software engineering 101 and OOP, and maybe design patterns, what else should I brush up on?
I say maybe because when the main interviewer stated that there will be no questions on design patterns, yet it will be helpful to know about
For context, this is a final round interview with a manager and a team of three upper level developers
System design, like uml? Or more in depth?
Make sure you know your own resume inside out, like why did you use certain language or framework for a project, etc etc
My last 2 jobs, everyone had mac yet they gave me Lenovo with Windows : (
whats interesting is that the position is looking for people who know C# and angular, but I've been told by the manager I interviewed with that they won't ask me questions specific to these tools
LITERALLY!!!! I WAS GOING TO ASK THE SAME THING. I'm not seeing anything open up
Its really weird because I told him that I only know Java for OOP and how my only experience was translating legacy angular to modern react hooks, and he's all like "you'll pick it up on the job".
tru
Of course. From what I heard, this will be an informal interview where they'll show me screenshots of C# code and ask me to find the bugs
gonna review some material from my intro to SE course, then branch out from there
Doesn’t help rn entry lvl positions aren’t opening up
Basically gotta go full time job hunting
W manager tbh
I was worried about how much I rambled during the interview, but it turns out the manager was also a rambler like me.
super lucky on my part
a consulting firm got back to me and now they're asking for transcripts for a 100k role
my gpa is garbage what do i do
what level of garbage if u dont mind sharing
Don't you have a master's degree?
no i have a bachelor's
oh

Is it < 2.5
no
< 2.0
my gpa is 0.9
if you dont send it to them you have 0% chance and if you do you have >0% chance, just do it
impossible
you can't graduate with a 0.9
My GPA is > 3.0 but still garbage tbh
I realized I work at a finance company lol is that good for the resume
True tbh
my biggest GPA dropping courses were the EE ones
My GPA was bad freshman and sophomore
but employer might care about major gpa more tbh
transcript page > save as > edit html code > gg ez 4.0 gpa
imma do that
just make sure you also fix the grades lol
depends, ik some 4.0s who dont know shit
they just keep their focus 100% on school and when it comes to applying, they dont know
will depend on if resume has some keywords
there's also people with 2.8s but amazing extracurriculars who got amazing internships
dont be one dimensional
laughs in 3D
i've never had anyone ask my gpa or my transcripts tbh
there are jobs with a gpa filter but i dont apply to them anyway
not good at balancing life
doesnt PM require good social skills tbh
fair
social and organizational skills will do best here
there are pm intern positions
wdym by thsi
ah ya + lotsa extracurla
i wonder if my gpa cut me off from pm yet
i heard interviews are weird for pm
lik estimate how many tennis balls can fit in an airplane
or smth

good day for zuckerberg I guess
no way, zucc punching the air rn
its very inconvenient and it has 2 hr battery life,, so u cant even watcha movie without charging it to a wall
oh
that shit was dope af
