In the span of a year, the company that's "always hiring" has frozen hiring, Meta plummeted because of the Metaverse, Google is quickly getting overshadowed by ChatGPT in terms of search querying, software engineering which has normally been considered "safe" is now a tumultuous market with some companies expecting 1-2 YoE on some SDE1/Entry Level Positions as a minimum requirement (not all, but it's strange seeing it more often than not). If anything, the only predictable thing about this market rn is that it's unpredictable.
Ofc tech is not indicative of every market, but since every market is p awful rn, that's why things are the way they are at the moment.

that’s the most rng part of the process, your resume is the obvious answer, but at some point when you’ve iterated on your resume 15+ times it’s just about the HR’s mood, their preferences and the company’s interview pipeline (automated OAs, lots of staff to interview so they can take more chance, etc.) none of which you can control so it becomes a numbers game
getting the interview has been by far the hardest step of any hiring process i’ve been in
