@normal narwhal hey, sorry this is late, just saw your question about GS. As with most companies, your experience is gonna highly vary depending on your team and org. For me personally, I was in the Global Markets Division and worked in Client Reporting which is a pretty high impact vertical but the problem with that is I would regularly get off work at 9/10 pm especially since I often had to interface with teams in Bangalore so I had to accommodate for their time zone as well. I learned a decent amount but the tech stack was really old, and most of the tools were proprietary and so not transferable skills (Slang, SecDB). Overall was a good experience just for the resume boost but if I could avoid and just work at a tech company I would. Engineers at GS and banks in general are like 2nd class citizens

Most of us just want high TC, and as it is most things, high costs correlate with high quality. Which means a high TC is a strong indicator of skill, talent and performance. Unfortunately some take that as an excuse to be elitist, but that doesn't invalidate those facts.

Work is just a part of it. When you're alone in your late 20s after job hopping everywhere to chase ultra high TC, how is that badge of "honor" gonna help you then? It doesn't mean shit. It doesn't matter how high your TC is, what matters is that you do what you enjoy with people you enjoy being with, working on a product you care about and a company that values you as a person, and not just as an asset to generate code. I would rather work at a company that values me and with good people for 80k than be a cog in a machine of lifeless corpses for 500k TC. That should be the attitude people take on, but the reality is that in our industry TC is still seen as a sign of superiority, and it's just sad because it makes those who choose to settle for lower TCs feel put down by the entire culture surrounding software engineering.
