Still got the email to complete the application, no response yet though.

Both work. You can apply then get referred, or wait until Microsoft sends an email to finish the app. The former though you should make sure that the email you send to them matches the email you used to apply.

Some folks also consider the first phone screen with a recruiter as a round, but that's just background and compatibility check.
