ahh i see thanks good idea
But how can u max out tfsa with ur internship salary
Thats insane 🤣
Assuming u paid all the debt and stuff
ill be working ft
isnt tfsa just like 6k a year
ye
but it start stacking when u turn 18
iirc
shouldnt be that hard to max
well assuming that u could pay off ur tuition loan and max tfsa
its still very impressive
well tbf you'd max tfsa before tuition loan, tuition is interest free
curious what do u guys usually buy when u put money in tfsa?
icic
I just look at the biggest losers because what goes down must come up
I can sell to you for a good price
💰
vfv mostly
even though market decided to correct itself after i bought
also xgro/vgro
it looks like canadian market is pretty stable compared to us
I think 95-100k
any insight on the highest paying ng positions in Canada? Wish and Amazon still pay the most?
Ye
dam, curious as to what the other places are
lots of sketchy data on levels.fyi lol
Is that before or after Wish stock tanked? 😅
i’m guessing before
no way it’s after
how does wish even make money they sell absolute garbage lol
ya i dont trust a word it says lol
The US data is on point but the Canada stuff is weird LOL
Noice... But I don't trust that stock not one bit
You mean the 2 dollar stock lmao
anyone have experience getting a TN with a non-CS degree?
I would apply, but I've got no Android exp 😔
Isnt this a new grad position. You can still apply and see what happens
One of the qualifications is 1+ years of Android dev experience
Yolo, just throw an app in
Maybe they dont get enough, so they start accepting people with lower experience?
yup, tho im not sure how much you would want to work at wish lmao
I think I would be too much on the edge everyday wondering if ill lose my job
I can be picky once I have offers
Until I have an offer I'll apply everywhere
Why not try to get a return offer there for new grad
thats probably WAY better than working at wish
Definitely
I'm tryna get a return offer
But I don't have a guaranteed one
I heard from previous employees, their code base is very intern code like
Plus Snap's future hiring is unknown with how the stock is
Again, I can be picky once I have a job offer 🤷♂️
I don't wanna work at Wish
But being unemployed is worse
your applying to 2023 new grad right?
And their base pay is still very good
Ya
Why not just wait until like end of your internship term to start applying
Snap doesn't give return offers immediately after your internship ends afaik
Hmm true
Also I rather secure an offer asap
I guess
If I get something better I'll just reneg 🤷♂️
I waited until the end of my Oracle internship before I started applying
But could be cause I wasnt graduating in uncertain times
I would've waited as well, but with the way the tech market is I want a secure offer
yeah thats true
Have you done other internships before?
if so you can try to hit thos companies up
To see if they are going to hire a 2023 new grad
Did u start applying yet?
There's only been 2 other places that I've seen with 2023 new grad positions lol
Ye sadge
Ya, that's a good point I should
bru
Is this for new grad?
It's under the University section but from the application it seems like it's supposed to be for experienced swes
So it may be misplaced
Hmmm interesting
tn?
tn visa
oh no clue
anyone here went through TN visa process?
@timid tartan is giving out free circle and cb's referrals dm him to get it before its to lateee

Nah I don't give it out for free
Gotta solve LC hard first
🤣
Didnt u fail couple of lc hard interviews? 👀
Yeee until June 6
Damn that's it? Sick
Well no the June 6 is just for them to decide what to do
Might be another hiring freeze
Who knows xD
If they see my resume and then see yours, I will get blacklisted and you will get hire promo'd to L5
Nah not even L5
He will be the CTO
Thats what @timid tartan said
Don't underestimate him like that damn
Till they saw his resume
-_-
@steel escarp LinkedIn be like "ex Neo intern, CTO of Coinbase"
There are reasons why @timid tartan got cb in fall while i got unemployment
You didn't even apply duh
Thats the dream
Doesnt change the fact that ur cb and me unemployment
...
Not even a little
I'm technically not working for Google tho is the thing
Am working for an organization sponsored by Google if that makes sense
I heard they used to give a referral for internship if u do well, but not anymore
Good thing is I can put "Google Summer of Code" in work exp
or just google 🤣
@timid tartan taught me not to show recruiters things that they dont need to know
badddd kid
???????
Bruh what
Wut?
👀
does rbc do multi round for interns?
There used to referral kind of thing if you complete GSoC but that is also removed now afaik
Yeah, I saw someone doing it lol
any1 here interview with surve monke?
elliptic i thought you alredy accepted an offer in boston
I did, I'm just curious
how are fellow Canadians doing today 😊

got a new keeb in so feeling pretty great
should i apply to the us even though im not ready or should i wait till i have more leetcode in my system
just do it lol
u might get lucky and get questions you've seen before
and worst case you'll get some extra interview experience
not too shabby! Hows it going?
not bad, pretty warm out today
whereabouts are ya?
had day off because of memorial day
nice to see not everything closed on my day off : )
im based in Van
actually in Seattle right now
waiting for my flight to Boston 😄
Hubspot
, hf .eth
thaaaaanks coco
wait lol did you dox me for a sec there :kek:

all good haha
jeez
i’m going to van next month
and then cali in nov
amazon? and wtf which internship starts in nov
nah just for vacay
i’m newgrad
i start in nov
ohhhh, have fun though that's amazing
tyty
nice nice
am doing an internship
ouu in boston
at Hubspot
nice!
yeah never would've thoguht to go to boston lol
it’s a nice city, my parents been a few times
i can’t wait to relo to cali
west coast life
yeah that's going to be sick
would love to live in cali
ya looks cozy
just need to make sure my apparentment not too far from the office
no i haven’t even started looking
oh lol dumb question
ohhh for sure
anybody interned at greenline POS vancouver?
soooo square ghosted me after my first round of engineer pair programming
not sure if this is common occurrence because no reply from recruiters either
is anyone here from uoft by any chance
No that’s a pretty unheard of school and like it’s pretty bad ngl
yea its pretty bad ngl I doubt anyone goes there

the first time I pay this server a visit in months and your here
bruh what are the odds
@mental marsh where is the best place to apply for internships when u dont got waterloo works
easiest id say UofT portal to land a job normally internal portals are easiest to land
everything else is just linkedin
I dont think we even have a portal
I applied thru linkedin last cycle
but I wasnt finding much internships there

I have it on my projects lmfao
ill dm u
3rd
finished??
coops 5 years idk how to count it
so like schooling wise
2.5 years in
yuupp
wbu

TMU Gang
reping the safety injection site
oh i see
im mississsauga
but im in my sg 223 lecture rn
nah im only first year
I applied for this summer and didnt get anything
just OA for IBM
but it was 16 months
maybe i shouldve pursued it
why not
i mean its way too long
over a year is too much time
yea thats true
yea it would be worth it there
dude looking for internships is going to be back to back
once you get a job you gotta start looking for the next

fun? bro who fed you crack as a child

do u know if its possible to do asip if youre not at sg
I dont think they do
they have one for only utm jobs
@weak gazelle how much internships has asip gotten you
im from uoft too
Ahh thus uw better then uoft
QED
QED
PEY is only 4th year right
have u gotten anything earlier
oh actually?
I just made it in lmao
93 in csc148 and 88 in 102
can i apply for pey if im like
second year rn
my first year just finished so technically at the moment im second
ohh okay
interesting
are you allowed to take courses while on PEY
12 mont coop is pretty downy tho do they let u split up
wait wut
asip is only at the sg campus
at other campuses its still there i believe
you shoulda negotiated salaries
if you couldve
Bro I gotta drive to utm rn
I’m bout to be late to my tutorial lmfao
Yea
Ali?
I’m taking 223 at sg
No clue tbh
I didn’t land an internship for this summer so decided I shouldn’t waste my time
I’m trying to balance both at the same time rn
But it’s kinda difficult since the moment I take my eyes off school I’m already behind
Yea honestly I kinda feel the same
I have a 4 rn
But I don’t think that matters at all once u pass post
I’ll probably end up the same way
Because I’m literally wasting my attention on classes
Oh I see
Just like Waterloo co op kids
I wish I could transfer to sg for asip
But they made it so only grades at 148 and 165 taken at the sg campus count
That’s pretty good wtf
Damn I didn’t know that
Nah 1A is pretty much 100% but I mean like 30% of those ppl are doing service desk jobs
Nah that rarely happens dk like Ik if u don’t get a coop they kinda like force u to work for them
As like a service desk job or smthg
Yea
LOL
Like Ik my friend in math rn first year didint get anythinggg 2 interviews but he chocked(he didint have any experience and just projects from class) he ended up working soft dev for the uni for his coop term
No you wouldnt...
My resume after 1st year was just a damn QA role lmao
No projects
other than school projects
? majority of first years will get something along the lines of QA
You wouldnt be behind if you went to waterloo
you would be just going at the normal pace
I just graduated last term
Well yeah...
If you work and grind at any school, youll be able to get it
You just get like more internship experience in loo, and be able to try out different positions
uoft scarborough?
I was just saying no you wouldnt to you being behind if you were in loo
If SG changed their coop program, then hell, it wouldnt matter
Just that youll see more US and bigger names in the Loo internal job board than torontos.
Tho if you apply externally, youll be fine
idk
I used the job board the entire time
my gf used it as well
I think my friends who got into google and linkedin also did, just they also did external as well
Basically, most people will still use the job board, but also do external applicaitons as well
I think the people going for the quants will probably not use it, as the only ones I see are Cit and Jane street
waterloo job board has a dating section
thats still better than most first years tbh
In loo? no most of ECE that i know which was around 20% of the class? had QA roles or even dev roles after our 1st year
many of the students at my uni don't even get an internship
its a different type of atmosphere
i feel like US school freshmen are cracked
nah lmfao, there are so many college students in the US, so it seems that way
the average US freshman is at parties and barely keeping up with schoolwork let alone making projects or grinding LC
Damn I wish I was a US freshman
not when you see the price

Those suckas
Paying Canadian tuition -> TN + US job too OP
I mean to be fair uni is the time to do that stuff
oh I agree, it must be a healthy balance tbh
I partied quite a bit throughout my degree 🤣 but I also met really good connections and friends that way
like I don't think your chances for FT role significantly increase after 2 or 3 good internships
my 1st year was a disaster for this very reason
I probably partied until 3rd year until Covid shut everything down 😅
How much does it cost?
I never said I stopped but I definitely cutback to not fail
Making a lot of friends in your CS classes is also the best thing to do in uni
$60k a year roughly
Wtf
So many friends in different orgs now makes it easy for referrals and things like that
Is this for international students?
Yeah no lol
I averaged like a 3.2 through uni 🤣 nothing special but enough to get by
Counterpoint: Just make friends in all your classes in uni
It's nice to have friends ☺️
Why not? I mean from my experience all the folks I graduated with from my uni during like the same 1-3 yr span have an alumni discord
depends on the uni, private schools are like that for everyone, states schools are cheapers for residents of that state
Super nice to ask about companies from people you went to school with
that's like above average dude
To be fair, it was probably a 3.0 on the dot but my last year during Covid I crushed it
Remote made it easier
Maybe in uOttawa it’s different lol
Or maybe it’s just me. Could be both
Idk I went to a smaller school, but like have friends at Doordash, Intuit, Jobber, Microsoft, etc
Jobber actually hired like 15 grads over the years I swear from my school
What's a private school vs a state school?
Jobber seems cool tbh, i wonder how they pay
Duke University vs San Jose State University
I’ve heard really good things, granted a bunch of my friends work there. I think pay is about average for a well funded startup in Canada
if you want a top US school the price is going to be the same for everyone but americans can get financial aid way easier
yeah I met a bunch of non technical people from Jobber and it seems like an awesome place to work
They did a lot of tech talks at their office while I was in school & like had events where the founders were there chatting
Was nice to actually talk with them
Super down to earth folks
WLB is really good too from what I’ve seen
What is jobber?
it's a canadian startup in Alberta
Hmm i see
essentially a booking software for businesses
yeah UofT and UBC follow the american model for international students
drop out
if im "officially" under the role full-stack intern or full stack developer or software developer u think i can rename it to swe just for the sake of consistency and resume screening?
Yeah
and McGill but both of those are slightly cheaper
oh rip
it sounded cool
its not too late to start applying for fall 2022 right
okok good
my friend at waterloo is already getting interviews
call it swe
waterloo works effect
protected?
incoming swe @ local gents club
and yo while u guys are active is it recommended to put my location for the internship if its in person
i heard thats its looked down upon
Technically you can get fined for it
But it rarely ever happens
Usually they just ask you to change the title
I'm curious guys, for the average cs dev you guys make more money in Canada living rent free with your parents vs living in the US?
I did my caluclations and everything, I m able to save ~1.5-2x my income staying put in Canada rn vs NYC with a software eng with 2 YOE (living with roomates and being frugal in NYC/NJ).
I can save liek 36k USD livinng frugally in NYC/NJ 2 YOE from now, and if I stay put in Canada I can save almost my salary which is llike 60k USD (with my salary rn). I thought ill be saving more T_T
i'm making a similar move rn, ~1 yoe canada to nyc. although for me i've been paying rent so for sure i'll be saving more
i guess at that point it's more of a personal decision. i'd say go for it because the US cs market is stronger, and in general i think it's better to be in the US long-term TC wise. also u get to experience nyc. and u can always come back later on if u don't like it
I mean yeah you’ll probably save more living with your parents. But honestly the freedom of living on your own is just fantastic and worth every penny in my mind.
Also imo, I feel like US salaries are spilling into Canada at a quicker pace lately.
You’ll still make more in the US probably as a new grad / early career . However, the higher you go I think you can hit pretty good comp in Canada (and even get paid in USD depending on the org)
Friend of mine just recently got 155k base USD from a US org , 3 yrs experience but still
That’s crazy good for Canada
Thanks for sharing, hmm are you sugesting that say a 5 YOE eng in NYC is valued differently by employers than a 5YOE eng in CAD? because another option is just to get 5 YOE in CAD -> get 5 YOE salary in NYC afterwards
Yeah this is deifnitly something im taking account of, we are still young and dont have this chance forever. Its just so friggin expensive thats making me hesitate a bit 💀
Thats crazy good! thats the average sakllary for a NYC dev with 2 YOE!!
I think salaries are increasing here too, but im not sure by how much
me and my friends have gotteon > 100k CAD offers from non-FAANG as new grads Not sure if its luck though or a genuione trend.
I have 1 yr exp and started a new job couple weeks ago I’m over 100k as well
Non-Faang
But to be fair when I was interviewing a good amount of of companies still disclosed <100k
thats good!
But again, not enough sample size
This is why I think it’s worth it while you’re young it’s nice to just give it a shot. Plenty of time when you’re older to be less risk averse imo
Yeah also it’s good to take into account WLB as well
A good wlb is worth a decent amount for me
Are ya planing to move next year Jados?
Nah I recently moved into a place with my girlfriend in Calgary
Will be here for at least a year or two
Would love to live in Van tho for a bit
Ahh nice nice!
Your not planing to move to the US?
Vancouver is so nice
I want to retire there 💀
I did plan on it initially during school but it lost the appeal to me tbh
The gun stuff is a bit sketchy
The recent news makes me question my decision to move
nah i think they're valued the same. i moreso meant being in the US the earlier the better, and there's generally more opportunities there. but y'all bring up good points, canada market slowly catching up. also prob a bit biased cuz i've always wanted to be in nyc
It just feels like there’s no plans to even improve what’s happening
@cursive blaze @frozen umbra same T_T
I also dont like the politics in the US
but meh hopefuly it dosent harm me if I do move there
The only good thing is that all my friends are moving to the same area as well
me too, I loved nyc haha. Probs atleast going to tyr it out for 2 years or so
So Itll be nice and easy to catch up with them
Yeah that’ll be sweet
I think honestly once you reach senior level, working remote in Canada is probably quite similar pay to the US if you land a solid org
Probably
Have some friends reaching that level roughly and most are hitting 200-300+
I just think canada is nicer to retire in
Might as well go to US and grind out a bit then come back
Yeah and I mean like 200-300 in say AB goes quite far
Yeah friends is a good point too. More of my friends are in the US vs here cuz everyone left when i graduated lol
Brain drain is real
Yeee brain drain is a problem big time
There just more high paying companies there
I feel like more are expanding into Canada now tho
Yeah theres more expansion into canada, but there still more in the US
I feel like Spotify never hired Canadians before and now I’ve been seeing a ton of postings
Similar stuff happening for other orgs
Cheaper for them honestly & pretty on par engineering quality
yup
Plus no crazy time difference
Even at the same salaries but just do the CAD to USD conversion they save 20-30% per Engineer 🤣
yup lmao
Yup this i get. like 1/3 of my graduating class is moving to the US.
u from waterloo too?
Anyone here going to the US ? And in the process of TN?
Yeah but compared to a lot of other orgs not necessarily big tech it’s quite good
lmao you as well? what major
yeah but i'm 2021 grad
I know but Spotify should be considered a big tech
tron
Shopify pays 🥜
Fr these companies take advantage of Canadians
I’ve heard senior they pay well but they lowball early career eng
Idk if they pay senior well tbh
Where you working at rn?
I would say like 140k max
just started the process yesterday lol
150-200 for senior max
Nah have a friend of a friend making almost 300 there
I think around 4-5 I wanna say?
Yup going through the process. Should be getting my TN in 15 days
Yeooooo
Same around 10 days
Do you go to person airport ??
no
amzn vancouver
how long the TN process take for y'all?
and I got a receipt lmao
you in loo? badminton 😉 ;)?
And I have to go in person
ah your in vancouver
It was a struggle to get some documents since I couldnt get early diploma. But like they started the process on the 31st
Fr
We're just US jr
But its not worth it for me, since ill need to stay in a company for like 6 years minimum to get green card
hoenslty might be easier to just marry a us citizien
your waitlisted for 6 years?
Shit
WHich is backlogged like hell
I think India and china has it the worst
its stupid how they do it based on your birth country rather than your citizenship
What abt tax tho
Idk exactly how it works, but isn't Canadian tax higher?
Yeah I did all the calculations and eveyrthing
I make more living rent free

Idk about NYC but when I did some calculations for Van vs Seattle 200k income, u take home 1.5x in Seattle compared to Van (taking account income tax with no credits/deductions and conversion rate)
^ this is excluding CoL/rent, etc
Are you living rent free in Van?
No, but I could ig
Oh sorry just saw your last message
Ohyeah you make more in the US
No im just speakign in terms of me living rent free in CAD
I make more in CAD than in the US bc I live rent free
Pretty sure it’s not worth just based on the fact that u can easily make more off a US salary to cover that rent
For example its way easier to make 200k+ as a new grad in the US than Canada
Like I’m way more confident I can find 200k TC in US than in Canada
Yeah you do, but I can save 60k USD here, whikle in the US its 30k USD. And im just statisticaly speaking for the average dev not a FAANG new grad
Ur only saving 30k usd?? What are u spending money on?
Ohh average dev
How much does average US make vs Canada?
It’s good to compare to an average dev imo.
Yaa, in NYC its ~150k after 2YOE
Im beign conservative just in case
150k in NYC is not a lot
its like 150-170k
NYC is like one of the highest CoL
So ofc things are going to cost more than if u compare with Canada
U can easily make over 150k in Canada just by starting at Amazon lol
Yee for sure
u make more in NYC than in TOR renting though

From what I can tell it’s really hard to justify staying in Canada financially speaking
The reason to stay in Canada is not financial, it’s more other stuff like SO, friends, family, etc
I think this is true for the average dev imo
If you’re a rockstar you can still make bank ez
Yeah but if u can make bank here, u can make bank in the US as well
And u take home 1.5x in Seattle vs in Van
Bruh there’s a guy who mentors students at the uni I went to as he’s from Edmonton
Guy makes
This means u can make the same in the US getting 200k as u would in Canada for 300k
Well that’s not completely true
But decent way to think about it
Yeah honestly financially US is probably the best
We’ll not probably , it is
But then u gotta deal with US stuff xD
^^ 😦
Yeah heaven for getting paid peanuts 🥜
Honestly all about perspective
Canada relative to a lot of the world is heaven lawl
solve the housing crisis, make wages affordable for everyone and i would love to stay here forever
Tbf, doesn't the US have these same problems?
Like I constantly see ppl complain abt US wages and stuff
Honestly grass is always greener
I’ve never seen a place where ppl don’t complain
Yea ppl always talk about Canada as being a model for social services and things
If you are not making boatloads of money Canada is way better
But of course CS is not like that
I agree with this 100%. My mom came to Canada a poor refugee, and now she is a middle class home owner.
I know that if ur making 200k, you'll only take home abt 125k
Just defer and toss it all in RRSP
There’s definitely ways around the tax imo, it’s still higher than the US for sure tho
I shit you not income tax is 50% as much in WA than in BC
Yeah they do
i meant for us cs kids theres more financialy icnentive to move
The point is you can’t make boatloads of money in Canada
WA doesn’t have an income tax
0% for both individuals and companies 😁
Gates and Bezos set up there for a reason
Yeah exactly 🤑
Yea the US opinion of refugees is basically hostile now lol
I’ve lived in both places and whereas Canadian cities have those immigrant welcome centers I never saw that stateside
Honestly I've always wondered, how does Washington make up for it then?
They have quite high sales and property tax
It also results in WA having the most regressive tax system in the US
Since poor people still have to buy food at the same rate as rich people
https://washingtonstatewire.com/am-i-taxed-too-much-a-comparative-look-at-washington-state/
Answering the question of whether someone is taxed too much or perhaps not enough requires some level of comparison. Answering this question in absolute terms is difficult for a host of reasons. So, invariably, the question of whether my individual tax burden is too high, too low, or just right rests on a different question:
Yea I had to make make this decision Vancouver vs seattle, but its ymmv I have really good relationship with parents etc
Yea I remember you sharing! thanks 🙂
Yea taxes here are brutal though we could use some regressing ourselves
How do you start asking the right questions in this server? Don't see any pinned stuff to get caught up so thought I'd just ask
Graduating in a year with 3 mediocre internships so kinda worried abt finding a good job after graduation 😬
U should try to help as many ppl as u can so that when u need to ask ppl are willing to help
bruh i graduated with 1 internship lol
Or just ask haha
people find jobs with 0 internships, you'll be fine
Had 2 internships and 1 was QA and still got interviews to big companies except MS and fb
Ppl with one internship or less even get really good new grad, just make sure to start early and be ready for interviews
And also, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t land an insanely good company first
Much easier to take a decent job and switch in a year to a better org
Just be good at DSA questions
The worst feeling in the world is getting an interview and bombing
Lmao I'd rather do lc cuz kind of an average student with generic personality. Much rather take my chances with a skill based assessment lol
We’ll fair I mean to that extent some companies it’s will ask a more practical pair programming
Is more so what I meant
The company I’m at rn asked me to basically query and api, and do something with the data etc
Way more practical
Yeah that or like, a decent take home that doesn’t take an insane amount of time
can any1 show me a resume they used for security engineering intern roles/how do you write CTF's on ur resume and how do u mention the ones ur a problem writer for
Im broke! Help ...
If u give me ur credit card number I can direct transfer
I dont have one
@timid tartan pay me cash to do his dirty work
Ill pay you if u tell me all about the dirty work
Wdym
I'm literally about to lose my job
No cash
I'm broke
🙂
Says someone working at a F500 company
U can be a sale associate at walmart and claim urself working at f1
Deal im sick of unpaid workkk 😭
Bad wlb always get bullied and no food
Sadge
Wait don’t u work for IBM currently?
Hmm I smell fake news
👀
And I was about to hire u too
The whole world is fake
500k TC
Im the only real thing
What is this misinformation
I work for Jane Street, dual major at Harvard MBA, don’t u get it wrong next time @steel escarp
Next time you get resume screened, just assume @fickle juniper applied to the same position and got it without interviewing
Sorry daddy plz notice me
THANK U
Finally someone who understands my level
damn LOL
i wonder what people in this tc range do though to maximize their tc
Tax fraud
There isnt a "trick" really to pay less taxes as a salaried employee
People who are incorporated have a lot more ~tricks/tools available to them
Yea as a salaried employee only your company can commit fraud
Since your T4 is withholding your tax anyway
@timid tartan hows your coinbase offer looking rn?
As of right now, it is safe

not sure if LinkedIn is promoting more posts than others but it seems most offers rescinded are international students in the US
Or its the ones that are desperate as fuck and need to find a sponsor
yeah that’s a fair assumption but i’d post on LinkedIn either way tbh, it’s the trendy topic rn with the recession talks and recruiters are interacting with the posts
I've seen like 10 posts so far
I'd say 3 were international
The rest didn't mention it
damn I guess LinkedIn is just curating the feed to appease to my international ass
ya
you be a consultant
and be incorporated
way easier to commit tax fraud and make 500k TC and 100k taxes
Rn I'm an incorporated contractor, since my company wanted to hire people on a contract basis then later offer fulltime positions. I might not even go fulltime based on the salary I negotiated (yes I have less benefits but they r paid out, the company my company contracted thru has ways of buying insurance thru them, and have some basic coverages and honestly the tax incentives add literally a 20% boost to the salary)
They offer a lot more to "companies" than individual contractors going thru an agency
They have been doing it for years plus after 1 YOE I'm dippin
Hi, I'm new here. Sorry for the abrupt introduction but, does anyone knows how to and how hard to find a job in Canada if I'm not a Canadian but I can get my hands on an open work permit?
yes I believe you can
I'm not graduated yet (currently studying Master in Asia), but I'm having a panic attach
you have to go through an application process and I believe there's a criteria just check on google
but from what I've heard it's not that hard to get canadian visa / work permit compared to the US
I'm quite sure I can get a permit. But how hard to land a job though? As I've been told it's quite competitive compared to where I live right now
yeah it is if you dont mind me asking have you had previous intern experience
and I am assuming you are going in some cs related field well because u are here
I have one but sadly it wasn't very technical. It's more on hardware side.
try for the US as well US has more job listings and more opps if you are interested in that
no worries intern is intern
you just have to make it sound good
u are most likely going to be looking for new grad positions
if I am not wrong
actually I'm considering Canada cause I can get PR there easily but not in US
I think so as well.
facts my parents worked in the US for 6+ years and no greencard
some instances of people working on H1-B for 10-15 years and no greencard / permanent residency
it's a lengthy process but imo it's worth it but canada is not so bad
Yeah, that's what I've heard too.
when do you graduate?
okay so this is what I would do
apply for positions in your country in Asia and in the US & Canada
keep your options open
that's true...
But one thing I'm so rushed because there's a time limit to the application to owp and it's ending soon. But oh well, I think I'll try. Thx dude 🙈
imma be real with you
I dunno how owp works
I am guessing you can stay in canada and you can be employed by any employer with no restrictions
oh yeah I came here for something else
if anyone knows any co-ops for fall 2022 or spring 2023 please DM me!
in GTA preferrably
yes that's basically it
I know many international companies can sponsor you but you need to be with them for a long time ish
SAP sponsored one of my friends uncles from South Asia and he moved here
yeah I was gonna suggest find a company thats intl work with them for a bit and transfer within
newgrad in canada is very comp as well
very
lmao
no point in grinding lc if ur resume wont pass screen
oof
not tryna discourage btw I havent seen ur resume
I'm sorry my g I just don't want to Sugarcoat stuff since your commitment to coming to Canada is a huge deal and expensive to deal with
what people looks for a resume?
just saying make sure u have good stuff on your resume
projects work experience education
ahhh lmao I did use that template when I was copying my friends CV 😂
it's basically what most CS kids use lol
Yeah it's relatively popular but that's because it's easy to read and parse
yep
General tips is using # and % to quantify your experience
x y z format
Did X using Y to reach Z
Improving something by x%
Decreasing testing overhead by y days
As you can see some numbers in the resume
And maybe u can make specific resumes tailored for specific jobs (no, don't change the entire thing). You can add/remove relevant skills or experiences
Like if it's a more web focused job, add more web technologies. If it's more of an infrastructure role, focus on Linux related stuff
ic 🤔
but if I have basically none web technologies experiences, what should I do? or should I just find infrastructure role lmao
tbh I do find linux more interesting anyway 😂
ah ok
Like maybe you have some personal projects that use a specific technology, you'd highlight that more in some roles, less in others. Ofc if you have not much experience then you can expand on everything
Again #resume section helps a lot
yes, ic
thanks a lot loll
I reckon this is much more useful than the CV writing class I had in my school 🥲
I learned a lot being here and people are pretty nice
has anyone gotten google OA from canada
Google Canada is a myth
No one works there
It doesn't exist
🥲
There’s no Google Vancouver office
Gcp sales nice

looks like fall season is dead
another year of google ghost 👻
can we apply to google us or is that auto rejection
i had google recruiter reach out
on linkedIn
he asked me to choose location from New York, Waterloo, Mountain View
I skipped OA and Phone straight to Onsites
still waiting for feedback from final onsites
yeah it is
hope my time for faang comes next year but not looking good from the recession
dw, if you dont get it during your internships, youll get it for FT
isn't it harder?
you just go through more rounds
For NG, questions are basically the same as an intern.
if your hopping from an existing job, theres more theyll expect
But even if its harder, you still can do it, if thats your goal

do u think itll be better to rush and graduate summer 2023 or try to find a last internship for summer 2023, hopefully faang, then grad 2024?
How many internships have you done?
1x8 month and 2x4month
are you a loo student?
yeah
alr
youll see more call backs for the bigger jobs
should i try to go for only the big ones?
And you can try to find a job that you would like to return to for FT
Uhhh, with the current tech stock dropping, I would say going to a big name company is safer, as long as its a company that doesnt deal crypto.
But just take what you can get
NG interviews feel better and easier when you dont have that much stress behind you
yeah i did phone for coinbase then they froze :|
crypto too volatile
would banks still be good? or should I be aiming higher
do u usually apply to everything for internships / NG or only the companies u want to work for?
but it worked out right lol
Yes 🍌
for internship or ng?
Ft went through industry loop
But yea I applied to local vancouver companies that were offering like ~60k before that
I see I see
havent had any luck with faang so far unfortunately
i was hoping amazon canada would open for fall
GL and just apply but yea theres alot of luck involved
yeah i feel like i should also apply to local companies as well but not sure if id even take them
cause ill delay grad
Vancouver is the world's second most expensive city to live in based on average salary
Banks are hella decent + you can aim higher... you already aiming at Coinbase which is kinda faang level difficulty
Holy shit

yea cause new yorkers make more money
well time to retire in new york
Are salaries hihger in toronto or vancover?
for new grad?
Lol
avg ppl
200k is not common
bruh its like 50k iirc
how ppl livin with 50k
you live in a basement
I have no clue, probably paycheuqe to payqycheque :l
My friend starting as a teacher is like 50k or something
where r the basement when everythin is highrise
you go to cities nearby
in the homelesss shelter
da way
Yea we live in a bubble
just need this shit to crash in next 2 yers
they gonna go up more
nah nah
its buy high sell low
and based on current prices, they can only go down
so ppl can sell
that is law of investing
