I went to mcgill bc I wanted to learn math + theory bc that is what was left out of my CS background
but like some people are very solid at that and want a more applied program

There is no special program that will help make you magically succeed. With UWaterloo there is a huge selection bias as the people who go there are already the best and it’s a continuous cycle, they would do well most likely at any institution. UWaterloo is effective at getting you your first job (if you don’t have particularly strong skills) most people that I know that are very good at UWaterloo have external coops but the quality of jobs equalizes by 3rd year when everyone can get good internships either way , the only advtanfe is that UWaterloo grads get 2 YOE vs 1.3ish if you’re not in co-op but even that comes with a disadvantage which is you have to stay 5 Years

Covering Calc sets you ahead at least 2 classes, I mean most schools where I lived offered APCSA could depend on the state

If you want good research inside Ontario UofT and Queens would be good imo
Outside of Ontario I would highly recommend mcgill we have a very research focused program
with lots of opportunities for undergrads to do research with profs and to TA courses
also Montreal hosts MILA which is a huge bonus as you can expose yourself to a wider community of machine learning researchers

To be honest, no one in first year knows what they're doing. But if you want to do research and don't really care about industry, I would go to UofT. Our first year first semester final project was pretty much a research project, and many people here want to do masters/PhD instead of working right after grad unlike a lot of other unis
You also get a LOT of research opportunities
And similarly if you ever decide to switch and think about doing industry, UofT is good for that too

that's actually really good, your searches will be a lot easier. i wouldn't stress too hard. for research, I would build up connections with profs, and get high marks so you can get TAships, and if the prof opens research positions they'll recognize your name
