1. big standard libraries, so you don't need to hesitate whether the languages have the data structures you need
2. Generally understandable to people that also don't know the language

also python and java have nice syntactic sugar to abstract the especially tedious tasks

I go for python because it's less verbose than java

takes less time to write things out, and less chances of looking dumb because of syntax issues
