Ive got a question for everyone, I am currently in my second year of comp sci in edmonton AB and was wondering if anyone has any tips for getting a first internship. I am very familiar with python and currently learning c in school. Is having this little background ok and would i still have a chance at getting an internship. I plan on working on some projects over the next few months and prepping other interview related topic over my next sem of school. thx

Most people going into their first internship have no experience at all.

My first internship was as a SRE, which means dealing with tools like Docker and Kubernetes

I had no previous knowledge of either tool but still got the job.

Companies dont expect you to know everything, but having projects on your resume that have been deployed (or even have users) is super useful

You mentioned that you are very familiar with Python, do you know any web frameworks (ex. Django or Flask)?

A close friend of mine got his first internship with those skills alone

So I would recommend picking up on that if you havent

Remember to keep an eye out when applying and try applying to local companies as well. Also, when applying to smaller/local companies try direct messaging HR/recruiters. You can potentially expedite the process.

Leetcode will help you pass the interview at bigger companies that have a more standardized interview process. If you get interviews at smaller companies just do your research to prepare the best you can.

If applying through job application sites doesn't end up working. Look into doing research with a Prof. Some profs need research assistants for their projects, sometimes they just need someone to do dev work which is good for you. You can also reach out to small startups where you live to ask if they're looking to hire students. Cold emailing and LinkedIn messaging can help with reaching out
