belltown used to be semi-sketch like ~10 years ago but it's been heavily gentrified so im not sure anymore

Seattle is mostly between 40-75 throughout year only averages 5-10 inches a snow a year they did have historic snow this winter but overall it’s not horrible

The weather and city bring out the cynical, introverted, and sensitive aspects of a person that everyone has down deep.

You can have a really great interaction with someone on the street or while buying groceries, but if it continues much longer than that, everyone just wants to get back to their own day to day life. You can really feel other people start to pull away from you.

Same kind of thing happens in other places I've lived like Singapore, Japan, and San Diego.
But the gloomy weather here emphasizes it enough that people decided to make a name for it.

Just try to plan your interactions for within a few minutes after someone has had their adderall and they'll be more than happy to chat for hours.

You get about 6 months from april til about october with a lot of sun and warmth. Hiking and biking trails get really packed. Lots of people at pike.

San Diego has this bs called "may gray" and "june gloom"
So at least in Seattle its sunny when you expect it to be.

Bothell, kenmore, and woodinville have buses that are straight shots into Seattle and Bellevue. But getting to and from the bus is where it gets annoying.

If you decide to go that route, your company should pay for an orca card to help offset the cost of public transportation.

I went to school on Capitol Hill and took the bus from kenmore for a year.
It was about 40 minutes door to door if I left before 7:30.

Parking in Seattle is insane as well.

In the next few years they’ll finish the link rail station in mount lake terrace, and then that will make commuting from the north a million times better.

@slate harbor you seem like you lived in a lot of places. if you were a new-grad from out of CS and offered to work for $100-120k which city would you relocate to?

The answer is skewed by family.
If you live far away from family, then most of your vacation time is spent visiting them. And the unfortunate reality is that visiting family is a lot of work.
People from back home get offended and sad when you can't make time for them when you're in town, so your vacations become an exhausting juggling act that leaves you excited to go back to work.

Seattle has gone down hill, but its still a really cool place and close enough to family to be my main pick.

But if everyone I knew was dead I'd probably go to:
Boston: bigger houses and short drive to lots of cool places and you get 4 actual seasons

San Diego best food/weather and a great place to invest in real estate with your new pay check

San Antonio or Austin: Texas is popping off right now and they're both pretty cool cities. Might as well get in on the ground floor

I've been eyeing Austin lately and it looks like it's growing fast with tons of companies moving offices over there (my company also has offices there). Plus the low CoL is also a bonus, when I relocate I want this move to be rather permenante. I don't want to be in a situation of moving from one to place to another, rather find a dope city with good culture/people and call it home

it also depends on where in slu you are

you can also live in fremont and bike over

traffic can be bad, and it's more spread apart but it's cheaper and while the homeless situation is bad, it's only bad if you're downtown

decent public transport, not as good as NYC

so if you don't have a car something to consider

they are building the light rail

well they have the light rail

but they're building three new stations further north

seattle also lot more outdoor stuff to do compared to nyc lol

Covid lowered ridership so its gotten alot better to catch a bus where you need it

also, any light rail station south of cap hill can be risky after dark with the exception of Beacon hill. Tukwila station is a definite NO NO and don't expect to be able to park and commute from there as well

There's this food place down the ave called Aladdin's, very packed

I'd recommend going out with a group at night or be in a car unless you're hanging around campus

especially if you're a girl

Because it can get pretty sketchy at times, but most of the time it's pretty chill

I'd go on night runs around campus, very beautiful scenery

Without rush-hour traffic, you can get from Sea-Tac (which I believe is cheapter) to MS HQ by car in just about half an hour. Generally though, I second the recommendation to look north or east. South Seattle maybe just might have something though if you are lucky?

This will eventually stretch all the way through the I-5 corridor from Everett up north to Tacoma in the south, and across to Bellevue/Redmond, but that will take many years. Kirkland is a suburb of Seattle (still a substantial town but significantly smaller) whereas at Pioneer Square you'd be in the middle of downtown with all the people and buildings that come with that. Downtown specifically is not super popular, but the neighborhoods around downtown are around $1700 - $2500 for a studio. But I’ve always just find 2-3 bedrooms and could get $1000-$1300 per person.

This one really depends on what you like! If you like bars and night life, capitol hill is the best one. But if you like sports, people like living around green lake area or even further out like bellevue/ redmond because they hve really nice fields. UW area is also very popular for students and it has some bars too

I honestly like all the parks here! Kerry park, gas works, golden gardens beach. But honestly the hiking and stuffs are the must visits and there are tons of those 😂

The median pay for the undergrad graduates in our school is about $94,000 as of 1-2 years ago. Due to inflation it’s probably increased to around $100,000?

So I’d probably say anything between $93-103k is average in the Seattle area (since a lot of companies are located in the expensive SLU)

If you go farther north towards Everett it probably goes down to 85-97k, but those are rough estimates
