The term Seattle Freeze refers to a widely held belief that it is especially difficult to make new friends in the U.S. city of Seattle, Washington, particularly for transplants from other cities. The weather and city bring out the cynical, introverted, and sensitive aspects of a person that everyone has down deep.

You can have a really great interaction with someone on the street or while buying groceries, but if it continues much longer than that, everyone just wants to get back to their own day to day life. You can really feel other people start to pull away from you.

Same kind of thing happens in other places I've lived like Singapore, Japan, and San Diego.
But the gloomy weather here emphasizes it enough that people decided to make a name for it.

#

Just try to plan your interactions for within a few minutes after someone has had their adderall and they'll be more than happy to chat for hours.

#

You get about 6 months from april til about october with a lot of sun and warmth. Hiking and biking trails get really packed. Lots of people at pike.

San Diego has this bs called "may gray" and "june gloom"
So at least in Seattle its sunny when you expect it to be.

bright dirge
#

If in city car kinda waste of money public transportation is pretty great and parking probs gonna pay around $300/month for a space

#

@restive plinth

#

Well depends then where at?

#

Then probs yeah that’s decent way out not gonna be much public transport up that north

#

Most of year is like 40-75 snows like average 8-10 inches a year

They had record snow this year like 1 foot snow storm first that big since the 70s

#

@restive plinth

slate harbor
#

Bothell, kenmore, and woodinville have buses that are straight shots into Seattle and Bellevue. But getting to and from the bus is where it gets annoying.

If you decide to go that route, your company should pay for an orca card to help offset the cost of public transportation.

bright dirge
#

Yeah problem is it’s like a 55-70 minute ride via bus from like Bothell to Seattle option but would be hella annoying

I went to school on Capitol Hill and took the bus from kenmore for a year.
It was about 40 minutes door to door if I left before 7:30.

Parking in Seattle is insane as well.

In the next few years they’ll finish the link rail station in mount lake terrace, and then that will make commuting from the north a million times better.

# lunar palm <@104833953436803072> you seem like you lived in a lot of places. if you were a ...

The answer is skewed by family.
If you live far away from family, then most of your vacation time is spent visiting them. And the unfortunate reality is that visiting family is a lot of work.
People from back home get offended and sad when you can't make time for them when you're in town, so your vacations become an exhausting juggling act that leaves you excited to go back to work.

Seattle has gone down hill, but its still a really cool place and close enough to family to be my main pick.

But if everyone I knew was dead I'd probably go to:
Boston: bigger houses and short drive to lots of cool places and you get 4 actual seasons

San Diego best food/weather and a great place to invest in real estate with your new pay check

San Antonio or Austin: Texas is popping off right now and they're both pretty cool cities. Might as well get in on the ground floor

Honorable mentions:
Toronto: Never been but I hear good things
Starbase: Means you work for SpaceX and thats cool

lunar palm

that sounds like a good list to consider thanks. I've been eyeing Austin lately and it looks like it's growing fast with tons of companies moving offices over there (my company also has offices there). Plus the low CoL is also a bonus, when I relocate I want this move to be rather permenante. I don't want to be in a situation of moving from one to place to another, rather find a dope city with good culture/people and call it home

Kirkland on the other hand as far as I’m aware is a developing city

Without rush-hour traffic, you can get from Sea-Tac (which I believe is cheapter) to MS HQ by car in just about half an hour. Generally though, I second the recommendation to look north or east. South Seattle maybe just might have something though if you are lucky?

Another thing I will note is that the light rail from Seattle to Redmond Tech District is opening in 2023, which can impact commute times positively: https://www.soundtransit.org/system-expansion/east-link-extension
This will eventually stretch all the way through the I-5 corridor from Everett up north to Tacoma in the south, and across to Bellevue/Redmond, but that will take many years. As of next month, it will stretch from Northgate (a mall in North Seattle) down to Sea-Tac Airport-ish (technically Angle Lake south of there).

Best places to live in dt Seattle?

velvet spear
#

Depends on how you define best, but I constantly hear SLU is one of the quietest and safest neighborhoods. Cap hill would be a better choice for nightlife tho

I see, are both very accessible by transit? Don't think I'll have a car

SLU is the richest area in Seattle

#

extremely safe

#

just expensive

Both areas have lot's of buses running (as does most of Seattle)

in particular there's a few Lightrail stations nearby

How is transit in Seattle. Working at Amazon this summer and wondering if I should be limiting my search to South Lake Union or can go elsewhere. Any reqs?

Bus and train transit is pretty solid and train was just extended well north of city a lot of interns end up in U District area

restive plinth
#

how did people find the transition to seattle? anything regarding adjusting to weather, cost of living, transportation, general quality of life

quick wagon
#

parking is generally not good here in Seattle

#

most of it is paid parking and there’s a bit of traffic (a lot of traffic) for a lot of the day

#

The weather is generally either cloudy, sunny or slightly drizzly

#

it’s mostly cloudy and drizzly for most of the year

#

Transportation in regards to the light rail and buses is solid

#

Quality of life depends on where you live and how much money you have

are you asking about long term rentals?

#

Cap Hill seems nice and on the cheaper side

#

and it’s technically safe for the most part?

#

But it doesn’t feel very safe imo

#

Lots of homeless, graffiti everywhere, vandalism etc.. The roads are wonky and the parking sucks

#

I’m not saying it’s a horrible place to live in, some of my friends have places in Cap. Hill and they seem pretty happy

#

But I agree that you should take a look at the area before you make a decision

quick wagon
#

It might be possible if you split rent with people multiple ways and on top of that shared a room with someone

#

Rent around UW is normally around $1200

Seattle student here

#

The median pay for the undergrad graduates in our school is about $94,000 as of 1-2 years ago. Due to inflation it’s probably increased to around $100,000?

#

So I’d probably say anything between $93-103k is average in the Seattle area (since a lot of companies are located in the expensive SLU)

#

If you go farther north towards Everett it probably goes down to 85-97k, but those are rough estimates

#

Give or take 5-9k to each estimate
