is mountain view cheaper than sunnyvale?
to live
@cold tree
i thought companies give u that for free

No lol
Uh no LOL
Except google, google offers basic free health insurance
it says health insuarance
fuck it doesnt say free tho
fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
But usually it’s like $100 a month for the cheapest
what to do now
Just pay for it
i only get 3k after tax n shit
Yep
out of cali ofcourse
I’m on track to buy next year
Hoping for housing market crash
cali?
wtf the house will be so small
3 bed 2.5 bath hopefully
fremont?
No further
okay
Like in the mountains east
But yeah ng pay not gonna buy a house anytime soon sorry to break it to you
Especially only saving < 2k a month
No debt out of college, saved every penny of internship pay, hardcore budgeting
i mean thats still like only 100k right when u were new grad
how u got the other 200k?
Yeah, then I worked for 1.8 years saving another 80k with NG pay
Then next year I’ll have 300k
Saving 10k a month
wait wait wait
I have like 200k saved rn

Still 100k to go
Job hop lol
just job hunt?
Yeah
Hop after 2 years
Basically when it’s time for promo, yoy hop
Work hard
Make a rep
Be a master of a domain
Continue to LC grind and learn system design
And rn, come to amazon
Amazon paying crazy money
my argo offer didnt give any sign on
Bruh
like they have relocation shit
idkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
they didnt say anything
its 160K base, 160K rsu
15% bonus perf based
Eh not bad then
yeah
Your base is higher than avg
the thing is im masters
Yes
is l4 senior?
Like literally I honestly think masters stigma is
You had to do it to enter the us
Or yoy couldn’t find a job after bachelors
And so you did a masters
It literally teaches nothing
But masters doesn’t even give you an edge on more money
it did
At Google masters give you a 5k different over bachelors
u just said my base is more than avg
i know the diff is small
ur right masters dont matter
i agree
but i had to do it to enter US
5k in a year difference is NOTHING
no other way
Yeah exactly
When most people hear masters, they assume it’s cuz they did it to enter the us
Like immigrants
yep
Masters doesn’t teach anything
So you just gotta work hard until you get that 2 YOE
Yoy don’t have to do it but like why would you not
Do you plan on not retiring
And also it lowers your taxable income
So it’s beneficial for you
And most likely your company matches
Which is free $$
No
They match usually like 3% of your base pay
Each company has a slightly diff policy
Some companies match 50% of your contribution
Read your company’s policy
Some company’s don’t match
Like Uber
But regardless yoy should contribute
it dont say shit
3% base is not bad
but doesnt it make sense ti put money in it when u have a higher salary?
Read offer letter
And it’s always best to contribute
oki
how is the mexican food in bay?
or is that only LA?
The more south you go the better
🌮 🌯
are there any open startup/company events in bay?
you can look into tech crunch
did you have competing offers/how did you nego
that offer is crazy among amazon sde 2 i've seen
lol i do not think that is true
Also, for many ML positions you need more than a BS
or at least, it’s preferred
idk where you get your info from but it seems very anecdotal
Your advice in general seems very geared towards your own life- some people value having no roommates a lot. You can definitely afford to live alone and buy a home on like $150-200k TC especially as a new grad since you’re likely to hit $250k+ within your next 5-8 years assuming you promote/job hop on time
Much sooner than 8 most likely
cuz if you’re at a place that pays $150k-200k NG, they likely pay close to $180-$250k for mid level and close to $250k-300k for a senior
Even if you stayed at like 130k base + 50k/year in stock for the first four years you’d have a 10% down payment in 3-4 years from RSU’s
before you’re even 30
120k + 30k/year is still close to a down payment in 4 years which is closer to a NG tc
Yes, for ML a lot of places look for PHD, not even masters.
It really depends what kind of home you want to buy and your down payment
And sure, I always at the end of the day tell people do what you want, it’s your money
Yeah, then Y3/4 is based on stock
So my compensation target is around 375k per year

how that signon even possible?
Amazon external hire SDE 2 offers are crazy
He went with linkedin instead for chiller wlb but that's still nuts
I thought signon is just 3 month base salary
Yeah that offer is lowkey stupid
Per year
u had competing oski?
160k per year
No, I was already working for faang
And I just interviewed
Lab126
what they do
Not even bad WLB lmao
Devices
what about 401k

My WLB is honestly great
they match that for sde2 or na
It’s fine, they match
echo and stuff?
Yeah, they’re in devices
oki
i mean with 370k who cares u buy ur own personal shares

The only thing I wish Amazon had more of are public holidays and separate sick days
Yep
Oh yeah makes sense
where your office? u prefer inperson or remote?
3 coding, 1 sys design
is it possible to get the 1 interview final for sde ii like new grad
Sunnyvale but my team is remote, no mandate to RTO
do u have to code in system design?
Like I don’t care about free food if you’re paying me close to 400k with 2 YOE
I’ll go buy my own damn food
So I really have no complaints.. Amazon is “frugal” but they’re paying you for it so is it really frugal
Yeah
r1p tax
I think Seattle is like 350
alright guess going to amz at sde II
anyone know if twitch pays similar
Yeah seattles is high high
Nope
the only place I know that pays similiar for 2yeo
i think is g/fb/li
ignoring quants
dd maybe coinbase
How I see it is that amazon lacks in benefits versus other companies but just gives you cash for it, while other companies have lower TC but they give you these benefits like free food
G/fb 2 YOE gets you like 250-300k
Top band
Assuming you able to get their L4 offers
who needs free food just become a cooking god
Yeah getting L4 at g is also very hard with 2 YOE
Externally
So most likely you’ll get L3 with 200-250k tc
So Amazon offering these tc is crazy high
Just join a good team at amazon as external SDE 2
And you have no complaints
1 month of leetcode grind + sys design
Did blind 75
And watched mock sys design interview videos
Also spent a good time prepping for the leadership principles
Those ar eimpoerant
is 90 minute commute in total worth if living with parents
45 mins 1 way is not that bad
i guess i'll just listen to banger music in the car
Well if you like living with your parents
then yes its worth the money saved
But there is a cost which is independence and freedom
Reason why I moved out even though my parents live 15 min away
But if you have no problems with parents, then yes
you'll save like anywhere from 1500-3000 a month
on rent
What a good idea is, if you want freedom for a bit, book yourself a hotel for a week or weekend - cheaper than rent
And you can build hotel status too for some insane perks
Aren’t hotels like $250 a night? Sounds like that will quickly become really expensive lol
yeah honestly this sounds like it could be the play
On peak times, but you could find a cheap one for like 100-200
And only for a few days a month
Cheaper than rent
lol wait are you talking about getting a hotel in the same area you live just to have independence for 3-4 nights?
for potentially $400-$800
just go on vacation
travel somewhere
that you haven’t been
for privacy (eg with another person)
not for travel
This makes significantly more sense
Also does anybody have a good estimate for how to 'convert' Seattle dollars to Bay Area dollars or vice versa? Want to be able to understand roughly what each offer can get me
I feel like if you’re spending $400-$800 for a few days for that, its time to move out
if you’re doing that a few days a month, seems pretty ridiculous tbh
3k vs 1.5k / month, 18k diff. + splitting utilities
not expensive hotels on non peak times can be <$150
breakpoint would be around 10 days per month
currently not in a LT relationship so
plus im younger than usual so i don't need be too hasty
You can’t just break it down into the entire month, and you can find a room for $1200/mo with roommates in the bay. One is between $300-$800+ for 3-7 days depending on where you stay and how long. The other is $1200 for 30 days
All i’m sayin is you might as well travel the world if you’re spending that much
yeah true
but if you find yourself dropping hundreds a month for a few days of independence in the same place
it’s time to move out
$800 could easily be a good amount of time in asian countries
lol but flights costs
yea that’s true flying is expensive
i do plan to take fridays off of usual 3 day weekends to travel tho
thursday night flights and tuesday morning arrivals 😂
yeah i'm trying to judge how much i value independence
i doubt independence is the only way to be happy for me so
you’ll know after you’ve spent enough time at home
trial year for now
there’s just a time where you realize it’s time to get out
my original plan was 1 year, only lasted 6 months lol
haven’t been home longer than 6 months since going to college
lol might be me
my parents rent so i kinda don't wanna pay partial then leave
i doubt they'll stop me tho
Have u used an income tax calculator?
Also, depends on where you’re living in Seattle
could also use a cost of living difference calculator
cnn has one, it uses the cost of living index
Yea col calculators are wildly inaccurate for most of us
Yeah I've tried the income tax difference and stuff but for example a $3000 apartment in Seattle near South Lake Union seems a lot nicer than a $3000 apartment in the south bay
I'm mostly just trying to understand what factor, if any, by which companies who have different locations scale their pay per location, so I can understand these from an offer perspective
Income tax wise, it seems like $125k salary in Seattle becomes $145k salary in Bay Area for same take-home pay, but then if rent is more expensive in the Bay you'd need to account for an even higher amount
So, it really depends, Ive seen companies that perceive Seattle and Bay to have the same COL, therefore, they give the same salaries in both locations (Snapchat, Coinbase)
others actually adjust between those two locations (Amazon, Google)
Do we know what the magnitude of that adjustment is?
20 - 30k I believe
Not sure about that
I tried to parse through levels.fyi but it was really hard to correlate points across experience level and stuff lol
the question you should really be asking yourself is would you rather live in seattle or the bay area? that’s a lot more important than whatever slight CoL difference
^yeah don't think there's much diff in comps between the two so just choose the place you like better
I prefer the Bay Area all else equal, but my Seattle offer looks like it could 'go a lot farther' is the deal lol
Regardless your point is valid and thankfully both options are in the solid range for me
Hi, I'm an intern looking for a room/apartment in sunnyvale, san jose, or anywhere on the penninsula from 6/10-6/17 until september, if you have anything please let me know. Thank you!
Hey guys I'm looking for a roommate long term (12 month lease) in San Mateo starting June 27. Rents $2.5k/person/month. hmu if interested!n
hey guys, I am an intern looking for room in santa clara, from 10th june till August end. HMU if you have it. I am even good with living room.
looking for room in santa clara. pls dm if you have one. can even adjust in living room.
I'm going to be working in Santa Clara soon, wondering if it makes sense to live in Santa Clara proper and enjoy a ridiculously short 5min commute, or live in a bigger city like San Jose for a 15-20min commute but presumably better access to people/things?
I guess what I'm really asking is - is Santa Clara a fun place to live, or just a place to work?
Hey everyone, I am looking for a roommate in San Francisco for a 2B2B apartment. My budget is up to 2.5 K. I am looking mainly at SOMA, South beach, South Park, Mission Bay, Potrero Hill. I can move after 15th July to august, kind of flexible
The entire South Bay is boring lol. The commute from sj to Santa Clara isn’t that bad
The only somewhat “fun” area may be downtown sj which is full of college kids + younger crowd on the weekends but that’s about it
Wait first go bears
Yeah what I'm currently seeing is about a 15min commute from downtown SJ via the 101
Yeah 101 gets packed but SC to SJ is pretty close
Which feels pretty okay to me from the work perspective
Make sure you pick a good area in sj then!
Maybe another thing I'm struggling with is making a list of things to do after work lol
Factors that go into that decision?
Yeah you’ll quickly realize there’s honestly nothing to do here
Neighborhood
Lots of side shows at sj downtown area, gets ridiculously loud at night
Oh hmm
Excellent idea
Peoplenalways complaining about the loudness
can second this as I live in san jose rn
i biked to santa clara wasn't bad btw
imo LA and SF is where there's shit to do
besides from that san jose, it's where all of the boomer live with their families
also the food isn't as good as in mtv, sunnyvale, and sf imo
I’ve been preaching this since this server started
People not listening to me or something?
apple screwed me over in san jose lol
yea u was def right
apple give good housing but the housing isn't in a good place for social things
is it not in cupertino?
i work in cupertino but i live in san jose
the housing for apple is pog
legit can sublease my closest lol
LMAO
Whats the apt called
how would u go to sf on the weekends 👀
Private jet
oh u too?
Nah you go by helicopter bro
I went via Caltrain. They are convenient.
I teleported, super convenient
honestly the entire south bay/east bay is full of a bunch of middle aged people
our generation vibes in sf
but sf expensive af

i just want some homies to chill with
shit is too lonely
rent a car or someshit and go fuck around in san jose with the other interns
lmfaoooo
yo chimi btw where in sj r u living?
did apple provide u with housing
Bro I’m the only intern at the apartment
But it’s alright I just been visiting other ppl from the server
ohhh I think ik where u r at
ohhh you live near alviso park
how do u get to work
does apple have a bus or do you drive
room tour when
So do other interns live with you or you are the only one in the apt ?
Wow how many sqft is that place?
Does a single person need a 4 seat dining table? 😛
🤔
My current ambition is to find a place where I can stick barstools right up at the kitchen counter
Idk but you can fit a small dining room table and have space in the closet
Nah
I live by myself
Anyone got pros/cons for living in SF and commuting to MPK (Palo Alto/Menlo Park area)? I'm going to be moving in a few months and choosing where to live is driving me crazy .-.
similar questions get asked all the time, go on maps and check the commute times for when you'd usually go to work,
that's the con

lmao yeah obv a con
I'm leaning towards SF regardless just feel like there's more to do there
if you plan to do something literally every night then it could be worth but you still lose out 10 hours max each week
that's true, but can't I recoup with productivity on the shuttle or is that just not viable?
oh if there's shuttle then that's ok i guess
transit is different from driving commute for sure
south bay lol
is that like San Jose - i'm a east coast boy lol
more santa clara/cupertino area rather than san jose
i don't really care about night life just food
restaurants
fair enough - good food is a must, but I don't have too many friends in the valley, which is why I wanna get into the social scene for at least the first year
yeah since you said there's a shuttle then i'd do it if i were you
commute con is pretty much gone by not having to driving it (as long as you're someone who can relax on transit)
living in sf and commuting is pretty common for new grads, everything south is mostly middle aged people/families
^^ appreciate the advice - I'm also new grad
I think I can transfer to SF office within 6 months as well
also a new grad in sf, so still learning things myself but thats just the impression I have from exploring the bay
Also, how common is it to live in South Bay and go into SF for city life?
South Bay is so far from SF I can only assume for wknds?
Yea I probs wasn’t gonna go during the week
yeah you'd go on weekends
but if you're looking to hit up bars/clubs it'd be pretty annoying traveling that far back intoxicated lol
Uber my way to debt
@trim flume what do your weekdays look like? Is it just work grind?
work, gym, meal prep and chill w roommates
I knew them
that's nice - I think I'm gonna have to rock solo for a while
Do y’all Uber at all or primarily drive around?
can't imagine not having a car in the bay
I live close to office and walk but use public transport when necessary
I need my car 😦
Yea that makes sense, I was just curious
I like traveling
you won't need one in sf
@sturdy herald are you from the south?
I caltrain when going south and plan on renting for trips, its really not hard tbh
I’m gonna be living in South Bay around July/August
But where are you moving from?
Oh lol, yea that makes more sense. I’m originally from the Midwest lmao
Wbu?
do you end up spending the same amount tho or save from not having a car
Guess yall is just a everywhere thing now haha
I'll be moving around the end of September
def saving lol
yeah I heard parking spots cost a lot
a car would be like $500 a month and im spending like $100 max
ok cool
i'll consider it like next year then
but i already have a car so don't really want to sell it 🥺
^^ I feel that
cars are just a hassle in sf
Well I’m originally from Kansas sooo yea
parking is expensive and limited, plus tons of car break ins
its like $20-30 for a round trip
nah you can use clipper for all public transport in the bay
hmm ig that's still better than a car
paired with an occasional rental you'd save a lot
@sturdy herald why'd you decide South Bay?
Offer was pretty good there
And I figured I could save money with roommates
Also, I’m bored of the Midwest which is slightly less important lol but yea
lol makes sense - did you know people or randos?
Lol I don’t wanna say randos but yea I met em thru discord
this.
you are literally and legally disabled without a car.
my office will be in palo alto
can i get off campus college housing near stanford?
I'll get an AirBnb in San Francisco using relocation temporary housing, and I'd like to know what areas are nice in SF and what areas to avoid
have u started yet
ya i wanna just relax, oh mine was that too
til friends wanted to do shit end of august and early sept
so i moved it lmao
god damn
see i wanted to do shit too, and then i dumped most of my money at edc vegas rip
ay thats still worth tho
how much yall pay for internet 👀
Hi guys, I'll be moving to redwood city in 10 days for my summer internship and still haven't found a place to live. If you have any resources which can help me find an accommodation for next 3 months, please do share.
15 per person in a house of 4
moving to the bay area next month, what do you think is a comfortable salary for the area? I'm possibly looking at getting a new job when I move to the bay area but i need to interview prep before hand.
is there a group chat for ppl doing anything in the bay? if so, someone sent me a invite
Anything above 100k you’ll be fine. You’ll have a roof over your head and food to eat
No Bay Area is boring af
so sad that apple force me to be in the bay
when 90% of my team is in nyc
wait why u r in the bay?
Cuz my job is here
isn’t amazon remote now? do u prefer to be in person?
No their remote is you can wfh but still need to live near your office
oh Icic
The whole idea is nobody is forcing you to come into the office
But you need to be nearby just in case
make senses
Which is understandable
yea I kinda prefer that ngl
I go into the office to charge my car and use the gym
ayo free charging
Some teams allow full remote
Yoy need approvals
Yeah I know it’s based on the team, my return offer would’ve been full remote
best hobbies to pick up for social life in south/west bay maybe sf?
i don't drink
There is no social life here that’s the secret
why don't you drink out of curiousity
Sf gotta have social life right?
I guess, sf is just completely diff than rest of bay
just not the lifestyle i want, feel no need
what's the diff between SF and Bay
I thought they were one and the same
Bay encompasses many cities
There’s the rich suburbs below SF
oh ok
Literally such diff vibes
whats your definition of social life
Places where you can go and hangout and meet people
Literally everywhere South Bay closes at like 10
And it’s all families
well i usually meet people online then meet people in person
then it dosen't matter where you live
lmao
Ok then you can just stay South Bay
And stay home
driving 🥴
Do you work in sf?
nah PA
es fine if hybrid
which company are you working at
i have a banger playlist to listen to in the car
yeah exactly
i'm listening to this weird anime shit rn

friends is anyone lookin for housing this fall
yo im planning to stay near stanford
as an off campus student
my office is in palo alto
@cold tree is this a feasible plan?
You have a car?
Or how will you get to office
It’s still like a 15 min drive
no i was thinking cycle or something
It’s 5 miles hope you like cycling
Are busses reliable there
🤣 im dead
i am looking towards the east side
it looks like 10 mins cycling from there
long shot but does anyone know of someone still subleasing their places in San Jose?

<@&868936794601828492>
im in palo alto too! @spare sedge @foggy summit
Anyone working in Playstation ?
I am an Indian
looking for accommodation in bay area (male) starting July/ Aug
Any1 know some good companies known or have hired underclass ppl(freshman) for internships
Apply to the Frosh programs
At faang
They seem boring
U don’t get to do nearly as much
??? Then just apply to the official SWE internships
But there’s a reason why companies don’t hire freshmen
Y is that
Like 99% of freshmen don’t know anything even if they think they do
I thought I knew CS when I was a freshmen, boy was I wrong
I mean lmao
Like how am I supposed to know then
You continue taking classes
School is supposed to be teaching you these things you don’t know
Also, a company is not a charity - freshmen add the least value overall, and if they’re trying to recruit for converting to full times, companies don’t want to hire freshmen since they have another 2-3 more years to go
Okay whatever I’m not gonna like “brag” about y I think Ik stuff it’s pointless but suppose that freshman has a cracked enough resume and enough knowledge
What does he do then
If you have a cracked enough resume, yoy shouldn’t have any issues with companies noticing you. I knew someone who did internships in HS and actually knew CS going into college, and companies naturally found him.
Most likely you would be competing in CS competitions like competitive programming, doing google code jams
In HS
And companies will notice you because your achievements speak for themselves
Yea im not insane but I’ve done a couple of cf contests and got gold usaco
I’m more of a math and projects type of guy tho
Gold usaco is like the beginning my guy.. pretty much every HSer in Bay Area who had interests in CS did usaco
Yea idk
Your personal projects should speak for you
if you truly have a good enough resume you will get interviews
(see: many instances in the intern chat)
apply to lots of stuff
probably should apply anyways unless you want to take that opportunity away from yourself completely
hey guys!! im a new grad moving to sf in august and looking for an apartment - if anyone is also in that situation , hit me up so we can chat!
Hey anybody moving to the Bay Area looking for roomates. Specifically cities like Pleasonton, Dublin, San Ramon, Livermore. My job starts in mid August
Anyone know of any slack / discords for interns in San Francisco?
Sorry not looking for roommates but I live in Dublin :0
what yall do for fun in the bay
Stay home to avoid heat and traffic
I already do that
Then looks like you’re already having fun
Literally nothing to do for fun in bay, you have to make your own fun
food
How do you all travel in the bay area
Is there car sharing in Bay Area? Or do y’all buy/rent cars
Car only South Bay
anyone wants to buy a 4k monitor. almost new, never used. pick up in 95112 san jose. only $100.
is SFO cheaper than SJ for some reason?
SF is worse quality for your money
Sj is expensive but the quality matches the price
Like in sf a 3000 unit will be mid, no parking
Sj 3000 unit will be real good
SFO is the airport
I also don't drink and live in SJ: best hobbies to meet new people are probably things like hiking, rock climbing/bouldering. I usually like to do things like escape rooms, disc golf, bowling, comedy clubs, etc. with group of friends in South Bay. There's definitely young people in south bay without families but can be difficult to meet without already have friends in the area (ie: you meet via friends of friends)
which is better between mtv, sunnyvale, and sj?
sj lol
for 3k?
mtv 3k will be bad
sj is the cheapest
if youre asking where has the best apts, its most likely mtv and sunnyvale but itll cost you way more than sj
then mtv and sunnyvale, if you want to sacrifice location, then sj
SJ has some pretty nice new apartments right by Diridon station around the 3k mark. Great location for public transit and is walking distance to some good food options
Is the bay really that boring ?
I scrolled up and damn, why is everyone saying “there’s nothing to do “, “no social life”, “it’s boring”.
Is it really that boring or are people in this chat just boring 😭.
Im moving to the bay in august though
depends on your idea of fun
sf has stuff to do if u can get there
i think it’s really what you make of it. my friend was interning in fremont earlier this year and had a blast, made tons of friends and was going out to parties/bars every weekend
depends on how outgoing you are tbh. i was friendless for a couple months and only started to hang with a couple girls... its definitely easier to go out with a group of people than alone.
Tbf I think interning is a bit of a different ballgame than ft, I interned in Seattle and also had a blast but people claim internships are like “college 2.0” lol
yea that’s true
Yeah ft life is way different
i mean. it doesn’t have to be
hey, anyone interning in santa clara from aug to nov? send me a dm, looking for roommates for a place while interning in the fall
Looking for a roommate in SF starting fulltime in august, message me if interested!
Anyone been to round 1? Which round 1 is better?
For DDR and PIU, Hayward probably the best but not the safest at night.
Eastridge has pretty decent stuff but fairly tiny
Concord Sunvalley mall has a decent selection too, pretty big
Is the area ghetto or something 👀
haywards just not that safe from what ppl have told me
Hey just moved to the Bay Area and im looking to explore the Bay Area. DM me if you want to hang out!
Any recommendations for apartments in downtown San Jose? @cold tree sounds like you may have suggestions lol
Budget like maybe 3.2k but flexible, idk what the sweet spot here is
Why specifically downtown sj? Sounds like you want kinda luxurious apartments in a nice location
Downtown sj does have some nice apartments, but the location is very coin toss - loud construction, cars drag racing, etc. better to live more suburban areas closer to work
how is oakland?
Along broadway isn’t so bad, some nicer luxury apartments especially as you go north of downtown and past west grand. Temescal isn’t bad either I’ve heard.
I’d definitely go for a place near a garage though if you have a car
stay away from east oakland
i also have a coworker in adams point who enjoys that area
living along broadway is nice cuz i basically never drive my car
Oh idk tbh I picked that region because it’s like the closest part of SJ to both walkable food etc and also work in Santa Clara
If you have like a specific building or property manager you recommend I am looking for that kind of advice
I have no clue how much weight to put into these google maps ratings
But when a pricy apartment has a 3.2 rating on google maps it doesn’t feel so great lol
people on yelp and stuff said my apartment complex has thin ceilings, they never answer maintenance calls, and other bad stuff and so far none of it is true for me
Lol yeah I kinda anticipated that, only people with something to complain about go through the effort of leaving a review
Heard from my cousin who lived in the South Bay a while that Prometheus property management is a good company, they have several properties and are a certified B corp so they're like legally required to be "good for society" etc
that’s not what b corp means
B corp means they're legally obligated to be accountable to all stakeholders instead of just shareholders right? Like that's the entire premise
B Corp certified companies just meet the requirements defined by B Lab
it’s not a governing body
there is no legal aspect to it
they’re just a non profit
Yes, and one of the requirements is to change their governance structure lol
B Labs can’t legally enforce anything though other than revoking a b corp cert afaik
it’s not a legal obligation
but yea I’ve worked for a b corp before they seemed to treat employees better than other companies in the industry
Any dentists yall recommend here
Oh shit I’m from TN too
is living in a car in the bay area worth it for the higher income
same with seattle etc
You mean to save money?
I don’t think that is worth anywhere

This is a comprehensive guide on how to start living in a car. It really isn't as bad as you may think as long as you have a good plan. I lived in a van in San Francisco for almost the entirety of 2019 and I draw a lot of my experience from my time there.

im not at that level yet but im honestly wondering if buying a used UHAUL truck and converting it to a studio apaprtment would be worth in LA

Yeah everyone making 6 figs but no friends and nothiong to do
@cold tree TC or gtfo
u want to know my tc?
yes
what other interpretation of my expression was possible
375k
what level and what company
sick asf
u on sunnyvale campus? lab126 per chance?
i referred a director there and he got ghosted lmfao
yep lab126
fuck yea my mannn, heard that place is dope
really good, and super good wlb
i have a google opening lined up in MTV
250-300k is negotiable
but tbh i wanna overemploy
and get 420k+ 😭
L3, 1.5yoe
weird time to apply bc i was disqualified from most mid level positions. recruiter reached out to me
Yeah I can see industry hire hitting 250k at L3 at G
Did you get team matched yet?
yes, google assistant. might change though bc im not sure if i wanna move to MTV
Whos the manager?
but damn the recruiter didnt even break a sweat when she said she could get 250k
genius mf
I mean when NGs are getting 200k, 250k for 1.5 yoe industry hire is doable
topcoder world champion 2005-2006
at google for 15 yrs
patents n shit
basically god
nice
yeah up to you
if i were able to secure remote, i could overemploy here and save probably total 100k a year
hmm good luck with overemploy
i'll let yall know how it goes 😎
Depends which companies you overemploy and I guess how committed
idk man overemploy with amazon is pretty hard
id say Amazon definitely has good amount of work
And I personally like my free time so
very org dependent
🤷♂️
ya good luck!
i'll finalize my decision within a month
Im my experience, Amazon > Apple
WLB is better, pay is MUCH better, work is more interesting
SWE quality and infra is better at Amazon too imo
Wireless Tech, working on software to support 5g development and wifi
damn that's cool ngl
but like every team at Apple does iOS/MacOS development, so if you're into that, apple would be your paradise
Here's the thing, the folks at Apple are passionate at the thing theyre working on, and WANT to be at Apple
that's their recruiting strategy
Amazon is just a bunch of SWEs
but i mean.... there's gotta be a reason they keep working there
Because they're loyal to the company
No joke
like 70% of SWEs here are Apple fanboys
apple is so cultish
yeah it is
ICT 4 is their senior eng level
and their comp is pretty decent
because they get a ton of stock
and Apple stock is REALLY good
yeah. def super valuable
But base is behind other FAANGs
Are you at zon rn>
Luck is needed to internal promo fast
get on the right projects
IMO, if you're on a team with few engineers, its so ez to speedrun
my team has 12 ppl
you'll prob be doing typical l4 swe work
yea
and it'll be hard to get on things that will bump you up to l5
because the real l5s will be doing it
but i've been trying to do docs and shit too so i can at least do sth better than other L4s
talk to your manager, express interest in fast career growth
and not be typical code monkey
your manager should help you
yea my manager and skip seem pretty nice about promo and career trajectory. my next meeting with them is about promo expectations
so hopefully i can meet them
Yeah, they should try to put you on right projects
Internal promo at zon is super rng imo
you need to get on right projects and good manager
easiest sppedrun is work at diff faang for like 1-2 years
and external hire
to sde 2
thats what I did
yea i plan to hop within a year or so and boomerang
Apple for 1.8 years, then hopped to Amazon for sde 2
I mean if you hop, how long until boomerang?
Also btw
boomerang does not let you level up
Amazon policy
if it's within like 2 years
huh. damn
no idea
Only if you got promoed, left, then you can boomerang back to your level
tbh im aiming to create a startup within the next 2 years so idk
because i have quite a few friends who were L4, left, then wanted to boomerang back < 1 year and they were strongly told no level up
if it doesn't work out, i just stay at my job and i can boomerang after 2 years at other company
damn
how realistic do u think it might be for me to try and get sde 2 interviews in feb
given that i started may
Why not just stay at Amazon for 2 years, promo, then start looking
tryna get offers for dive and save
bc i wanna speedrun shit
sde 2 in a year hopefully
if i make the right moves
Well in that case, if you don't get promo at amazon in a year, you're gonna have to look elsewhere, and thats going to be REALLY hard
I dont know ANY company offering SDE 2 level for 1 yoe
external hire
except amazon
FB explictly scheduled my interview at my 2 YOE mark cuz they were like, no SDE 2 until 2 yoe
i don't wanna go to fb anyways
I mean same with other companies
I honestly think your best shot is internal promo
push your manager for fast career growth
yea fair. but worth giving it a shot as well. worst case i get reject
good luck!
does anybody have info on google's MTV HQ campus? cant find any on their website. wanted some guide/ virtual tour but could not find one
Bouta get my ass kicked by the Amazon OA today
i feel like moves that different will be extremely dependent on someone’s personal situation
like i would love to live in a beach town so id have no problem moving there
intern experience count as yoe?
Probably not and definitely not for Amazon specifically
NVIDIA has IC2 which is explicitly 1+ YOE, essentially all IC1 become IC2 1 year after new grad
no
Nope
I see. Then they just have a specific NEW GRAD level
Yeah basically
sunnyvale (with a car) or SF (no car) ?
SF
Cheaper to live in sf and also more fun
anyone have recommendations for areas in sf to live
i'm near mission rn but haven't explored much
Looking for roommates to live in the fall in sf!
What the I have to pay a toll fee to cross a bridge
Yes, so if you live not in sf but work in sf and cross the bridge, you’re paying to go to work
Some companies will reimburse you, others won’t. Check your company policy. But also the bridge gets INSANELY packed during rush hour
there’s is only a toll going westbound
This applies to all bridges in the Bay Area
I wanted to visit the Golden Gate Bridge lmao
