nope
you cant stay in the country if you dont work or laid off
yes but with in two months
true but thats still a pressure situation to leetcode
you also have to keep track of the number of years or months left on your h1b
if your h1b is almost ending and you are laidoff you are fucked
if your passport expires you are fucked
every 3 years
nope its like getting a new one but dont have to go through the lottery
same goes for transfer while changing jobs
you can get rfe and that's a pressure situation and you might be fucked
rfe - request further evidence
and if you get the rfe and your 60 days are up before receive a verdict you are fucked
it's easy if you havent left your previous job
and if you dont need to renew your visa now
i dont want s386 now but biden has it on his platform
i dont care for country cap removed but s386 eases the travel restrictions and makes it easier to change jobs
on h1b
do you know where? I don't see this on his immigration plans https://joebiden.com/immigration/
Passing the current version of S386 would make employment based GCs practically impossible. Everyone will either move to Canada or go to EB5 route, provided you can afford to invest $500k and handle all the legal baggage that comes out of it.
I think he meant it aligns with Biden's plan for immigration
Going on a tangent here, Suppose if my F1 visa expires and next year I decide to do grad school, I still need to apply for the visa interview again?
"Then, Biden will support expanding the number of high-skilled visas and eliminating the limits on employment-based visas by country, which create unacceptably long backlogs"
Under reform temporary visa
Yeah that's under the " temporary" visa programs like H1B. S386 is about EB Permanent Residency Visas.
H1B doesn't have a country cap
And it doesn't have the concept of backlog either
So I interpreted it for gc
Probably some other temporary visas do, because EB3, EB2s which lead to GC aren't temporary. He also says STEM phD grads will be exempt from caps. Not mentioning what kind of caps
That's from the 140k capped visas for employment
He basically says PhDs will get a green card without any cap
Btw even tho it's mentioned under temporary visa, he calls them employment based visa rather highly-skilled visas. And he also called gc as employment based visa multiple times
Wait so if we are new grad, we are automatically Level 1 right? Cause it's based on the title
and won't stand a chance for h1b until we level to SDE 2?
Depends on the company
It’s just the wage not the title
ah gotcha
this might be a dumb question, but can someone explain to me how to go from h1b to a green card?
i'm also an international student on f1 trying to eventually convert to a green card
i'm from vietnam if that matters
How different would a resume for UK occupations be compared to US occupations?
Oversimplified explanation on Employment based green card-
-
First employer should file PERM certification ie, proves that the employer cannot hire an american worker for the same job and must meet wage requirements, and get it approved.
-
Then employer files I-140 and should be approved
2.5) If you're BORN in oversubscribed countries as given in the visa bulletin (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin.html), you wait in line until your submission date shows up in the final action section on the website and then proceed to step 3. Otherwise, if you're not one of the countries listed or your country has a "C" in your visa category, you can immediately move to step 3.
- You file I-485 and if that's approved, you will receive green card.
Obviously there's more information to the individual steps, but this is a general pathway
and there's exceptions also, which depends on what you have
Eg:- If you're a executive of a company, extraordinary professionals or professors, you can skip Step 1 and move directly to Step 2
@static musk How long does the whole process take for ROW applicants?
@rocky scroll 6 months if it's premium processing
think that's only PERM. The whole process should take much more
I don't think so since it's premium processing it should only take 15 days to get i140
and what about i485?
so the whole process is 6 months + 8 to 14 months?
I think most companies will apply for premium processing so 8-14 months
You should be able to get it in your stem extension
What if my STEM extension is over and i485 is still on the process?
UTA and Georgia tech provide online masters in CS and they claim that the degrees of the offline and online mode are indistinguishable. Incase I get one, would that count as an advanced US degree and help me get an h1b sponsorship in companies like FAANG etc ? thoughts ?
You can renew your EAD to work and stay if I-485 is still pending (see (c)(9) for EAD renewal)
For the process, heard it takes around 6-18 months, depending on US bureaucracy stuff for non oversubscribed countries
The online consensus says it would count as an advanced US degree, but it is better to get a offline one imo.
I somewhat have decent options in India, and if it counts as an advanced US degree then won't you think managing the course alongside a job would be a good option career wise ?
If you can balance your course workload and job correctly, sure
Do you have a good source for this? I'd be interested in doing that too
As an international student with F1, can you apply for an internship after there graduation and be accepted?
probably not, unless you have grad school lined up
basically you need to be in F1 status otherwise you might need to use ur post graduation OPT but at that stage you might as well apply for a FT position
also some internships require you to return to college after the duration of the internship (this is more of a company requirement than an immigration one) so your options are fairly limited to begin with
ok, thank you very much
you can use OPT to intern, BUT most companies don't really offer that as the person above mentioned
I have a friend who is doing that but it's a return internship offer
Yeah, I am thinking about doing that as well. Its for spring though since my school doesn't have any internship classes besides summer.
I don't think my school allows us to use pre OPT for spring or fall semesters full-time. You might want to check if yours does
I didn’t know schools had that policy. I will check. Thank you!
Anyone travelled to US on EAD card after their graduation?
anyone understand this?
https://www.fragomen.com/insights/alerts/dol-issues-revised-rule-increasing-perm-and-h-1b-wage-minimums
At a glance The regulation will restructure the prevailing wage system for the H-1B, E-3, H-1B1 and PERM Programs, imposing higher government wage minimums, though not as high as those initially sought by DOL. Entry-level wages for H-1B and PERM cases, for example, will increase to the 35th percentile of wages for the occupation and geographic l...
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is inexplicably delaying the legal process for thousands of high-skilled international students with Masters and Ph.D.s, preventing them from starting their jobs after graduation. International students have been waiting for nearly 3 months without getting a receipt notice from the...
Texas not processing EADs are causing intl students to lose their offers
Trump controls the USCIS
While I understand this happened during a pandemic, any ease from their mishap would help. It’s causing too much stress on their end
Are people filling already in October for May/June OPT jobs?
Any one knows if any top us unis provide scholarships for master programs (in CS)
none
or barely any
i know stanford does not offer scholarships
unless you do the knight hennesey program which is suuppeer hard to get into
R u even allowed to drop out of masters and work @sterile sequoia
Unless you get a H1-B, I guess not
What happens if I get an H1B then decided to go back to school
are companies even hiring F1 visa holder who are pursuing masters, for summer 2021 internship ? No of my friends managed to land 2021 internship
Can the H1B get transferred to the new employer
Tons
woaah
Where do you go to school
Oh I see
Hm, I’m seeing that people at northeastern uni are
You didn’t get any OAs?
@brave wedge
None
just got one of those automatic hackerrank
no reply from the company though
omg, this is so stressful smh
Do u want a resume review
Yes please, i would really appreciate that
Dm
sure
I think it expires xP
but I am not sure
i think it can be transferred but it won't reextend it (it will have the same expiry as the original) and if you were hoping to get a GC the process might start all over again
Does anyone know if this new salary-based h1b visa system is a big deal
apparently it is, when i read the arguments by DHS refuting this concern their argument is you have 3 years stem OPT, you should be able to get a promotion in that time to a higher level taht guarantees your H1B by then
there aren't gonna be many level 4 people though
and a big N offer is usually at level 2 if im not mistaken
this h1b rule is not going to last long i guess?
we don't know quite yet lol the trump admin already has a chilling effect on companies cos a lot of them don't even want to risk hiring internationals cos of this (notable one is intel)
yeah... let's hope not all companies are developing a ptsd of trump
Hey guys! It's been a really rough fall semester in terms of recruiting. Are there any big companies you expect to give interviews in spring and would suggest applying to? Even my linkedin recommendations are dead at this point lol
Doesn't this new h1b rule only favour people working at silicon valley? At best software jobs. I don't see how this can go through.
@candid cliff wait, EAD's aren't being processed in Texas? I applied about 3 weeks ago
Gotta wait for the next recruiting cycle unfortunately
its not too late to apply
theres some companies that open up recruiting in the winter, but it will be a bit more involved of a process to find them
(or continue recruiting into the winter)
I was gonna say this but its RNG
RNG but not impossible really basically its not too late but you gotta set your expectations accordingly

America / EU / Australia/ New Zealand citizenship for legal issues(important option)
wrong chat bruh
I'm legit so scared for my intel offer
Manager approved, already said she's going to send offer
nah if they offered you you are gucci
its just for a lot of positions on intel apparently now it highly discourages intl students
lol i can't break into intel x)
does intel have a good outlook for first internship? @safe zenith
I have an offer now
oh i mean if you got it you might be set lol
i heard intel is hard to get into but its pretty good once you are in
i mean if you have an alternative offer
then sure renege if you have to
although i honestly wont' comment on how useful it is
since its bloody hard to get itno to begin with
idk why you would renege unless you are weighing it with a different offer
wondering whether it is worth to renege for intel
when it comes to weighing which is better
kk
also there's friggin no salary data points for intel
nothing on levels, nothing on here
ghost company
yea semiconductor companies are nonexistent
on this server
is it like hardware or swe you got?
SWE
ah honestly i have zero idea lol
cos from what i saw basically intel only considers internationals for their SWE and maybe HW eng + phd positions
so you are REALLY lucky to get an offer
guess we'll find out, just have to hope
i wish i had that luck
i mean as an international you have a pretty strong foot either way into the US market i think
whether you have the original one or intel
https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/01/15/h-1b-homeland-securitys-ice-develops-new-unit-to-probe-opt-foreign-student-work-permit/ give me a break
just 4 more days
how many things they can still come up with before they are fired
we're not allowed to do off-season internships, right?
technically it might be possible, but it depends on your university program
if you have a coop program, you can use CPT
that means you need to enroll in the minimum units to be considered full time (which is tied with the coop program)
well
then tough luck
either part time or precompletion OPT
well i mean those are the only remedies you have lol
as far as i know
so TECHNICALLY its not impossible
its just
very unlikely
unless you return to your home country and take a gap semester
and intern back home
I am interning this semster on CPT
sure
if i did my undergrad here and used up say 9 months of cpt, and now i'm in a masters program, do i get a fresh 12 months of cptZ?
nope i think you will have 3 months left over
it doesnt' refresh when you transfer programs
pretty sure it is related to the level of study, so you should get a full new 12 months of cpt but contact your international student office to confirm
Any1 who's graduating this sem/quarter have intense anxiety about what they'll do if they don't get a job/ admission in grad school and must leave the country, 60 days after graduation(90 if you have OPT, i guess)?
I'm not from US, so wanted to ask are there companies hiring fully remote sde(from outside US) and paying them 100k?..
They pay you using your country’s rate.
Typically it’s also much lower
ok thnx, lulz.
must be nice to be a US citizen and able to do unlimited number of internships
Is it worth looking for summer internships outside of the U.S? Like in Europe
Is it a plausible thing
can yall do fulltime for fall and spring?
think that depends on your university, mine lets you do it
yep its still CPT or precompletion OPT if you have exhausted your CPT, do mean like a regular course or CPT course?
yep def possible, a bit more annoying until covid is done though
oh wow, I didn't know you could do fulltime fall as an international student
Don't you have to be a fulltime student while on F1 for fall and spring always?
like legally
how does one CPT course make you fulltime student
wait Lol we're in the same university
dm
DHS trusts our abilities more than ourselves 🙂

The price ranges are adjusted by location, so I don't believe so.
But yes, definitely only for software jobs.
All the other industries that use H1Bs will suffer.
which again, the way they passed it is bad, and will most likely be undone by litigation. just like the other sudden changes over the past 4 years
aren't the price ranges very different by industry too
I'm doing full-time internship now. They have internship classes that are 12 credits (quarter system) so you are a full-time student when doing the internship
my F-1 expires on July 2022. I’m graduating December 2021. Do I need to go back and renew my f-1 before my OPT starts in February 2022?
I dont think so
You don’t need to. It’s still legal staying in the US with an expired visa
what if there's changes on OPT? like switch to another job
As long as your i20 is still valid
Hi All, I am an international student in my last semester of Masters, I am looking for full time opportunities starting May 2021, I tried applying to many companies through their careers portal but no luck got no interviews, not sure what I am doing wrong, do any of you have a list of companies that recruit international students ?
check out pin messages
normally you have to be fulltime but my univeristy lets you do a thing called reduced course load if you have an internship offer
but again it depends on the policies of your university
Anyone here knows the H1B filing process?
What if you switch out when the company is filing for you? What happens when 2 companies want to file for you?
Can you tell the company not to file? Will they fire you?
That would probably initiate a meeting with hr/manager right? They'd probs ask if you're planning to leave?
Stephen Miller is officially fired! Congrats to everyone who survived this
anyone here gone back to india to renew an expired F1 visa? I'm tempted to go home this month (no more orange man afterall) and I wanted to hear people's experiences of going back
Can I tell a company like Amazon that I don’t wish to be considered for H1B since I want to go back home after a couple of years? Has anyone done it / will it cause issues?
Why not? Just resign after a couple of years if you want to.
Unsure how the recruiter would take it tbh
He/She can avoid paying FICA tax by not holding H1B visa
Biden is going back to the immigration friendly era
not helpful for international students?
Going to large companies help in getting the H1B approved
Is there any official announcement on this year's h1b process?
biden 8 yrs pls
lol WITCH com, panies are going to have a great time, unfortunately
doubt any of us want more WITCH workers
i actually felt like the wage level rule was better
if you think about it barely anyone is in level 4
a high COL area new grad salary is level 2
so not impossible to get an H1-B and probably better than a dumb lottery right?
The revised wage rule is pretty good
The old one no new grad can reach level 1 threshold
But even w the wage rule I’m sure witch companies can come up with something
i think biden's eventual plan as per his policy plan is for a wage-based rule, but perhaps after tuning it a bit
Now that it isn’t....
Ok but he did say getting a PhD -> GC tho 😅🤣
Mf im not gonna study for 8 years
I wonder if a masters degree would be more valued now
Can F1 students intern after graduating
it most likely would have to be on OPT
but unless your intention was to just return back instead of maintaining a job in america then it makes more sense to just apply for new grad
yes you can. but youll have to watch out for your unemployment period.
Also there are very few internships that take new grads
so, can we do fall internships?
and also does anyone know if CPT's renew in length (1 year limit) if I've enrolled in a new program
This depends on your university (mine basically doesn’t)
^
I found these days a lot of small and middle sized companies started posting positions, but unfortunately most of them dont sponsor international students
Has anyone been an international and done an internship in the fall or spring?
How does it work? Is it part-time only? Or can you do a full-time internship?
You'll have to ask your advisor i guess. Usually there is a course called independent study that allows you to obtain fall/spring cpts. But some schools, departments, or advisors won't grant such petition without appropriate cause.
My dept almost always nods to fall/spring CPT petition, while another dept in the same school has much more stringent requirements. That's what I heard.
only if its a higher level program like bachelors < masters < phd
afaik
yeah i went from bachelors to masters
Do some of you manage to get a J1 visa?
I was told that they don't deliver any more to interns, but I found it surprising
anyone here ever renew an F1 visa
i'm quite unsure if i need to fill in a new DS-160 form
a canadian friend got one i believe
Has any international student been able to open a Roth IRA account?
ok thanks !
Did anyone give the starting date after recieving a new grad offer from Amazon?
Hi
Hello
I am looking for a job
@sterile sequoia Bruno Bruno Bruno
He came from Sporting like Cristiano !
He goes left, he goes right makes defenders look shite
He is our Portuguese magnifico !
I am curious about this too. Can international students open Roth IRA ?
yes.
you can open, and it isn't tied to your status, just your age
but finding a company that will open for you is slightly difficult
I somehow was able to open one w fidelity
anyone know if employer can apply for h1b before my starting date?
the earliest i can start is early may
they can
Yes. My start date is in Aug.
Oh cool, did you have to contact your recruiter or was it automatic?
as far as I know its not automatic and you need to confirm with the employer
Oh ok ok, good to know. Thanks!!
Bros
What if my spring internship end date exceeds the spring semester end date?
How can I deal with CPT
Parttime cpt
You need to contact your international office
Has anyone done fall full-time internships as an undergrad with CPT?
Someone did further up the chat history
Does part-time CPT conflict with Teaching assistantship?
True, just got the reply saying they are independent
I have an offer that requires me to move from canada to us. It's completely virtual but i just have to be situated in the us for tax purposes. I really want to avoid going to the us cuz of obvious reasons. Has anyone been able to convince the employer to make them an independent contractor or pay on canadian payroll? (Company has canadian office but team is based in US)
Any help is appreciated
If company has a canadian office, a lot of my friends ended up being offered an arrangement where they would be paid canadian salary and be canadian employee till they move
Everyone decided to move to the us then lmao
@brittle mesa did they get offered it or did the interns have to ask?
Ahh this was for ft
Oh makes sense then
For interns usually the companies that didn't cancel themselves handled this
Smaller companies went the contractor route, bigger companies went canadian payroll route
They won't cancel probably
Yeah there's a few that do that
They also know someone else will go if i don't go
One of my friends had to move to boston
But she's doing some ece stuff so it makes sense
I'm doing swe
Hmm
I'll bring both of those up
Just curious if anyone managed to convince
Push for canadian payroll option
That's the most common one
When I was looking at internships for summer 2020, and Covid suddenly got big, all the us companies I was interviewing w/had offers for switched to remote from canada by themselves
Didn't have to ask
Maybe they're hoping it's more under control by then?
I'm american so that's part of the rzn why they even gave the offer
Nah they just don't want to handle taxes
But they do have canadian office
How much hassle is it ?
I mean I'm a lowly employee so idk
But shouldn't canadian office already have everything setup
Yeah they should
I just am confused on why she was so strict abt it
"u have to be in the us"
That's what mongo etc did, they don't have eng in canada, but had interns at the mongo canada company
Nice
Try asking for that option i guess
It feels awkward bcuz she asked if I could be in us b4 offer
I said yes and now I'm saying no 😂
I work on-campus 10 hours per week, and work off campus 20 hours per week with CPT. My international advisor said it's legal, but some people in the forum said I violated F1 visa regulation... Who should I believe?😭
always your university
what is this allowed!
I get work from campus but I am under the impression that as internationals, we are bound to working only 20 hrs/week while school is on
For instance I had two oncampus jobs and both had to be added up to only 20
yaaa i am working on CPT too. part time. But i didnt know about the additional work we can pursue
on campus
Yea, my CPT is 20 hours per week, and on campus is 10 hours per week
My DSO said it's fine, but someone in the forum scared me saying I violated F1 status...
I guess different schools have different rules?
huh you'd think they'd standardise it
btw is it weird to temporarily relocate to another state w/o income taxes during the course of your summer internship? It'll be the state where the internship would've been if it wasn't virtual
Hi, I'm an international grad student. I have a few questions regarding CPT internship and MS course credits.
1. As per my understanding, CPT is a must for internship. Is that right?
2. If I complete an internship, is it mandatory to apply for course credits? Or can I just do an internship and not apply for course credits?
- For off-campus internship, yes
- Yes, you have to register credits to apply for CPT
guys for start date do we need to get some permission from the university ?
this is for FT
what should I choose here?
I'm technically authorized to work in the USA too, AND I need sponsorship so idk what to choose here lol
say you don't need sponsorship unless it's a huge company always
as per your knowledge your school gives you work authorization
later in offer stage if they realize they shouldn't hire on F1 CPT then that's fine, get into the process first always
You always have to indicate you need sponsorship to work in the US
I don't bring that up unless they ask me
It's better to be straightforward so that there will not be time wasted for both sides
They always ask me during the phone interview and sometimes I bring that up during the phone call
Hey there, are there any international students outside of U.S. here?
I am?
I think no need. But, make sure you EAD arrives before your start date.
Does Mailchimp sponsor?
Yes!
Okay, thanks for the information!
does flexport sponsor?
any graduate school yall wanna recommend for international students? where I can work full time CPT during summers
most if not all graduate schools that admit international students allow you to do that
my recruiter said they do
damn
idk why i got resume rejected by them
or maybe just being a great fit for a role does not matter much
@fervent ledge do you go to a target?
Resume screening is very random
I'm trying to file the form I-765 for initial OPT without having any job offer. Is it better to get an SSN through this form or apply for SSN when I get a job?
Apply for SSN using an on-campus OPT
I think you need to have a job for SSN
when i got my ssn, I took the job offer letter from campus and then only I had a chance to apply for ssn
Has anyone had an interview with bytedance Singapore?
I heard super hard
how many rounds?
!problem can only be used in #leetcode-bot
3-4
Anyone who completed amazon OAs on/before 10th jan and still waiting ?
Doing the OA wouldn’t hurt, it’s always good practice. In fact you can go as far as you want in the interview process solely for the experience and opt out of the job due to the lack of CPT/OPT sponsorships.
any international students work here before and filing taxes? I wonder if IRS withheld your social sec + medicare?
Does ebay Sponsor h1b ?
I got OA 2days back and I haven't done it because i was busy with other OAs
Got rejection this morning for some reason
wdym?
i was still thinking abt it last night but my offer expired and i didnt accept

Yep
Joe Biden’s immigration overhaul seeks to allow more skilled foreign workers into the U.S. without stirring widespread protest from labor groups, whose opposition would all but ruin prospects for what is already one of the president’s most precarious priorities.
Is it a W?
No, WITCH companies will fuck us over

Students on OPT, once you update your employment on SEVP portal, does your DSO needs to update it in the SEVIsS?
My DSO is new to his job and he is saying he is not sure if he has to manually update it in the sevis
are US-Canada borders open rn
If there was one thing you wish you knew earlier about OPT application and the whole process what would it be?
yeah i legit wish these companies disappear from the face of earth
I transferred to another university ( Brookhaven college ) for one semester. Should I include that in the last page of I-765 form? And if I do, what should the page number, part number and item number be?
No he does not need to
Thanks
Has anyone recently done a STEM OPT application/if yes can I DM with a couple questions?
does anyone know if i could apply for and work under CPT outside of the US?
hey what's the visa you get if you graduate from a US master's as a non-US citizen?
Depends on a couple factors
For the most part if you work on your OPT it’s still F1
If your company is willing to sponsor work visa it’s most likely h1b
There might be a few more obscure ways but these are the most common ones I can think of
Hi would it be too late to apply for post opt one week from today considering that the start date is June 14?
Wouldn’t it be too early? You can’t apply more than 90 days prior
so after your opt expires, you have to get a h1b or another visa or else you have to leave right?
Yep
Hey guys, is anyone here from BS in CS at ASU ? My brother just got his first admit from ASU, he is an international student. Looking for some feedback with respect to the program and how is the CS program at ASU in general. Thanks!!
Can u go back on an internship offer if u get a better one?
Don't scare me bro
will CPT hours will get deducted from OPT ?
No
I have been researching a lot about working more than 40 hours on OPT but couldn’t find any concrete information. I have a full time SWE job. Can I work at another job as a part time(20-30 hrs weeks related to my major)?
Unlikely because you can’t even do that with a H1B
Correct me if I’m wrong but OPT is tied to your employer and you are only specifically authorized to work for your employer in particular
Can anyone on could help me I have some questions about immigration from Canada to US. Company is asking questions and I'm a little confuse.
has anyone here ever taken a class while doing an internship over the summer?
If anyone has info on which companies in Europe are giving interviews to international students, let's chat over DM and exchange info.
Yes, you can work over 40 hours on OPT
Does anyone know if you can take a leave of absence and work full time in fall ?
On OPT
Don't do that, you'll likely violate F1 status
And also why you work that much... 70 hours per week, that's crazy
i don't think so
total should be 20hrs. unless you have a specific authorizatioh
lmk too as well lol
No he's talking about OPT, which is NOT CPT
basically after you graduate
i'm pretty sure OPT is still tied to your employer
bump
anyone here (1) with a US internship this summer, (2) on a J-1 visa, and (3) outside the states right now?
is there a requirement for being "physically present in the US" in order to apply for J-1 academic training?
i just learned that it's a thing for F-1 opt and i'm hella scared 😩
does netapp take international students?
I too am looking to move to the us from canada. any particular issue you are currently dealing with?
no issues the gave me some question to send to HR about current visa which i dont have so sent passport and N/A for most
i know tn is easy to get and h1b is a different story
ahh
i think most people just go on tn then try to switch to h1b later on. or else you can;t apply for a greencard i believe
pokimane
For sending the OPT application, Do we staple our photographs on the I-765 form, or not?
don't staple anything
anyone getting j1 to work remotely?
Has anyone recently joined bytedance Singapore?
Opt is not tied to an employer. You don’t need a job to get OPT. You can even volunteer for OPT as long as you report your status to USCIS. STEM OPT is tied to employer because they provide training
Ah
Bruh currently OPT takes up to 8 months to process, so you could lose even 8 out of 12 months of your OPT just because of delays, wtf
Really?
Source please? I know there are delays because USCIS decided to change the lockbox location. And people already sent their applications, and those ones are getting super delayed
Does apple sponsor J1 ?
Basically USCIS is still processing a lot of October applications for OPT
Especially if you sent in the apps to the Texas dropbox last year
https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/ select I-765 for Potomac, this is for OPT
This site provides applicants the ability to see an estimate of the time to completion from submission of USCIS forms based on its adjudication location and subtype.
Currently there is a lawsuit seeking to resolve this issue, let's hope they will manage... http://optclassaction.com/
OPT and STEM Extensions students can join a class action lawsuit filed by Porter Wright against USCIS and ICE, alleging damage caused by a delay in the processing of their OPT & STEM Extension applications.
Also, there is a rule that you cannot do OPT past 14 months after your graduation date, so if they give you OPT 8 months after your graduation, you can do only 6 months of OPT of your 12 months you were promised 🤡
not even gonna mention how you gonna find a job with this uncertainty of when you will be able to start working
To be clear, this circus has been created by Trump, if Biden didn't win, then there would be probably no chance for OPT to survive at this point
This is a joke lmao. I have a job already and I hope they process my OPT sooner than later; but that will be a matter of luck at this point
What if we sent the application to the Chicago lockbox? What's the wait time for that?
In terms of STEM OPT though - if you can apply 2-3 months before your card expires and can work for 6 months after while waiting for the approval that should still be ok right?
Judging from the OPT wait times, we're not better off either.
only for J1 visas
does anyone know if as an intl student i'm allowed to be enrolled in classes while having a full time job on a cpt
Technically you are enrolled in classes already on a cpt since you need to enroll for academic credit to go with your internship so I don’t think it’s an issue visa wise only with your job
From the article it says "Students who file for OPT can remain in the country until they receive a decision from USCIS, even if the application is pending beyond the 60-day grace period."
Is it true?
I thought it has always been like this
IBM posted tons of DS full time positions, but none of them sponsors internationals
What the hell
only for this year applicants
Is the J1 Visa going to be available starting from March 31?
Hello, I just want to confirm that if I have OPT, How to answer the following question: "Do you have the authorization to work within the United States" ?
It's a intern.
Do you have? Yes
Will you need in future? Yes
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm assuming thats how it should be
how many are graduating this may and are still looking for a job? how to approach jobs from now on?do we need to go on an application spree? linkedin messages/comments arent helpful. applying on company website isnt helpful either. not getting any response, evne rejections. only 2 months to graduate and not OA's or interviews.
Have you gotten your resume reviewed?
Make sure you have decent projects if you’re lacking in internship experience
If you aren’t passing resume screens for OA’s then your resume might be the issue
Also a lot of companies might not be sponsoring right now, could be that as well
ya i used vmock and i got a pretty decent score.
Try using Hackerrank or Codesignal exams, since the companies ask the OA's from there.
anyone take a class or two on cpt
do they let you go through US canada border with j1?
i think the do, you would just need travel signature from your college on your i20
I went to canada last summer, I have f1 visa tho
Does OPT approval still take about 5 months
I heard the process has been a lot faster these days
Really, I talked to my dean last week and she still said it might take about 3 months
From https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/, could take anywhere from 3 months to 8 months considering the backlog from October applicants.
wtf 8 months???
how prevalent is international student discrimination in the swe market?
Just wondering how much y'all experienced it
If visa was not a problem companies would prefer international students to us citizen students
posted this earlier but didn't get a response
does anyone know if we can take a class during an internship on CPT
thanks
how come
More formalities for the company to do to host visa applicants which could cost them, so usually smaller-midsized companies would prefer citizens/GC. Bigger companies do not have this problem, hence the competition (imo).
but why would they prefer internationals over citizens if there were no visa issues
rather than look at them equally
Any of you have sent your OPT application? What did you use for mailing it? FedEx, UPS, USPS?
I used UPS
Did it give you any problems?
Like what problems
Bad tracking or package getting lost? If everything went smooth, then that’s great
Which POBox did you guys send it to?
I had none of those problems
Chicago Lockbox
FedEx, UPS, and DHL deliveries:
USCIS
Attn: I-765 C03
131 South Dearborn - 3rd Floor
Chicago, IL 60603-5517
same I heard people who sent it to Texas had a lot of delays
Can probably pray for me so that my work authorization gets approved on time ? Thank you so much

my dso hasn’t even set my i20 😭😭😭

What if you get RFE? If your OPT takes 4-5 months to approve, will RFE make it 6-8? Lol
Ig
did anyone recceive opt case receipt but not showing any status on the USCIS website?
Is receipt the one you get when they text you?
yep they text contains a receipt number and they also mail a physical one but I haaven't got that one yet
It shows case received for me
can internationals do fall internships?
you should put yes
because you're authorized to work in the country on a student visa
which im assuming is what you're on
but if you don't have one then you put no
Nope I don't 😂
It's been 2 weeks since I sent my opt app, and it's been delivered according to ups. But I haven't got a reply from USCIS saying they got it.
Sent it to Chicago
What's the normal processing time
Me too haven't gotten a reply yet
But after the pending receipt, should take about 3-8 months
join this server ya'll https://discord.gg/zrfsWEch
There's a big community here where u can get your questions answered
not sure how it works for US, but in Canada if you're enrolled in a co-op/internship program at your school they will provide you a with a temp. open work permit
For F-1 student should put "Yes".
I am having a hard time to apply CPT to the school. Currently I got an offer latter from the company.
However, school and the company have the conflict about that school wants to register the company in their site internship system(?) and in order to do so, school requires for company to write an external form. But the company says that they don't write any external form.
Has anyone had the similar situation like me? 😦
I know my school has weird system... it's CSUEB
anyone ever intern or worked at ibm?
very, i am a native english speaker but i've been rejected after perfect interview rounds because of my indian accent
i switched to an american accent with some coaching and i got offers from all interviews i had
25-30 interviews -> 4-5 offers, all of them after accent training
idt anything else apart from my accent changed dramatically so i won't dismiss this as coincidence
superprof
there's accent coaches too, but they're v expensive
$100+/hr
What the fuck is accent training lmao
this is seriously messed up. I'm so happy for you
Which program would you guys consider better for grad school? MSCSS at UW Tacoma or MSCSE at UC Santa Cruz?
"finding a software engineering job as an international student"-wise
Wtf
I just feel that's hella discriminatory
like you're denying someone based on how they sound while speaking. As long as they communicate well, it shouldn't be an issue
I wouldn't wanna work for them anyway
so, I just had this talk with my advisors like yesterday, they said no
so it really depends on your school
that's hella sus bro
let me google this
I try so hard not to get into this but yet here we are
For summer, you can do full time CPT and I believe that you have to take internship or some sort of course that school provides. I don't think the company likes you to take any other un-required course during the full-time internship. My company's recruiter told me that they ask intern not to take any classes during the internship. It might be possible though, I would ask to school if it's possible.
I am not sure, why don't you ask your recruiter or your school?
a little random but wanted to ask if anybody knows
does qualtrics hire international students
@outer glacier They do not.
Like they don't even mess around with CPT.
OPT and H1B is not even in their vocabulary.
Bro
I made it to the final and had the offer in hand in September 2020 for summer 2021
DHS required international students to take internship course in order to do CPT. So your company supposed to work with you about this
What are some companies actively recruiting rn
What materials are you using for interview prep
how will you attend classes when you’re interning 9-5? I was thinking taking classes part time but even then it looks impossible
has anyone done pre-OPT? i just heard that the processing time is at least 3.5 months so i might not be able to get my EAD card before my internship starts in summer
my program doesn’t have CPT for undergraduate students
only masters students
i’m trying to see if they can make an exception
otherwise i’m fucked
how bad are the EAD delays this year?
really bad than previous years
previous admin really fucked us over
does addepar sponsor interns?
I got my receipt notice in the mail for OPT, what do I do next?
you don't need to do anything. Just wait for your ead card to arrive
👍
Doesn't seem like they do. I came to this channel to ask the same thing lol, but yeah they need unrestricted work auth
does jp morgan sponsor
No
What happens after you get your receipt notification for EAD ?
How long does it take after that for EAD to arrive ?
Are students that are not in us allowed to apply to us based positions/internships?
For example: a student in India in an Indian university with no correlation to USA, are they allowed to apply for something like a SWE internship at Google in USA and is it possible they could get it?
I’m not international myself but I’m just curious on how it works
pretty sure you can, you would get a j-1 visa for that but very few companies go for that
Is it a similar process for new grad? or?
I mean its kinda similar with leetcode but it is usually easier and there are fewer rounds in comparison to new grad
oh I meant like the visa process or whatever
like if someone was to pass all rounds and got positive feedback/what not, would they be sponsored visa and is it guaranteed to go through?
Can we intern on opt?
It's difficult in the US tbh. Try Singapore / Aus/UK
Does hrt sponsor h1b for international students
Hi all, has anyone had any success at getting job interviews for Apple in California as an international?
difficult in what sense?
if one was to get an interview, then would they have to worry about visa issues at all or no?
J1 is going to be hard now until the economy recovers
@chrome steeple This is true. Companies will not likely even hire you because the purpose of an internship is to get you full time in most cases. If you are outside the US, you will have to come in H1B visa and that is a lottery. Most companies don’t go for that in the US
H1B after you graduate, J1 while you are a student
how does h1b work for a company like google (USA) then? If someone were to pass all interviews, are you saying they would not be given the position just because of visa lottery?
is it possible at all?
they wouldn't give you the interview
oh huh
interviewing is expensive so they won't want to interview someone and then reject because of sponsorship
is it 100% not possible at all?
even with referrals?
idk i cant say anything for sure but what im sure of is that its going to be hard now because J1 visas are currently banned
and i doubt they'll open it up again until the economy fully recovers
any idea how long this will take? 1-2 years or more?
@chrome steeple where are you applying from
lol i wish i knew the answer to that
Im a us citizen but I am just curious how it works
oh fosho
but i think 3-4 years for it to get back to 2015-2018 levels
maybe earlier
but things need to be fully open at least for a year
and as of now nothing is fully open
wait so will doing studies/college in us (as a foreign) make it easier/more guaranteed in terms of visa issues for new grad?
easier
would you happen to know how internal transfers work? Like say Amazon India to Amazon usa?
is it the same h1b lottery thing? or are there other workarounds?
L1
for that you gotta get into faang in india (rip) and then be a top performer (rip again) for there to be any chance for an L1
yeah
good luck to yall 🙏
Sounds fun. Guess we won't be on our way to the states anytime soon so
Are you from India
Nope Ireland. So a little more fortunate with all the big tech companies here
It's still easier to go to the US from Ireland, as an Irishman
It's the hardest for Indians and Chinese simply because so many of them are already in the US
Sounds about right. You image the same will apply with companies being less likely to take on Irish over the coming months/years?
Just did, 2nd time.
yes, according to h1bdata.info
dude, why do you have a passport size picture on your profile, this isn't linkedin
it's an accurate picture i guess
why do you care so much
I find it rather prone to doxxing lol
yeah the second line is the kicker
it says part time though, so he's likely right
yeah, so both
so im screwed likely
¯_(ツ)_/¯
unfortunate 💃
CPT = any work
no
false
CPT != any work
doing work rn, and don't have CPT, if you work on campus no CPT needed
but like at a company is what i refer to as work haha
therefore, it does mean i am fucked
yep yep lol
oh unapid? idk about that
point being you can't work fulltime on CPT in fall and spring semester while being in school, think that might be case closed.
i mean idk for unpaid internships its weird]
cuz thats like saying you need CPT for volunteering
technically u dont need anything for unpaid

but no one wants to slave away doing unpaid smh
I did an unpaid for credit lol
it was worth it tbh
It was either get professional work experience for college credit or take some dumb class
it's always a conversation starter with interviewers
which is what im doing this friday again, and since we go to the same school it should get clear then
the person i met last time 2 weeks ago said I could do it, as long as I maintained the "good student" requirements, and I was on campus
thought they knew the rules inside out, but guess not, better to check again
can't u do the internship only
and no classes ?
just aws intern
u can't work for more than 20 hours if u r enrolled as a fulltime student, but at the same time if ur school allows u to do internship in fall, u can graduate one sem late and just do work fulltime
the moment u take a gap sem
u lose ur visa
which means u need a diff form of sponsorship besides CPT
u need to be a fulltime student to maintain ur visa
u wouldnt lose the visa unless it expiring and u need to do atleast 2 continuous sem to be eligible to do apply for cpt
CPT is added on to ur i20
My school allows me co-op i didnt lost my visa
when u come back
internship or coop
internship in summer and another is internship but it will be counted as co-op block for me
i needed 40 weeks atleast work
as be eligible to graduate
3 co-ops
are u canadian?
nah i was jw cuz coop to me is a canadian uni thing lol
but i ll be getting credit for all those interns/co-ops
i have no clue how coop works in the US
because i need them to be eligible to take senior dev classes which are required to graduate
so if univ is fine and giving u cpt, i think u ll be fine @remote roost
but u can't do classes and fulltime
that is pretty sure
coop in canada is diff from internship
so not sure if what ur sayingf fully applies
bro co-op and intern is same thing, its just that co0op ranges from 14-16 weeks
whereas intern is 12 weeks
both needs to pay atleast min wages
we just need to be sure we are working less than 52 weeks on cpt
Why do you say that? Is your answer related to the GC process?
offtopic but what do y'all use to file taxes, wondering if there's an option for nonresidents other than glacier
I’ve used sprintax
sprintax. i think some schools have a partnership with sprintax and the students get a discount code
uh how much should u be able to reclaim for taxes in california
under 15k should be like pretty much all right?
I was withheld 4.2k from my income last year and got back 1.4k
what was your total income
My school doesn't care as long as I maintain 12 hours course load
initial response to some message i had sent a week ago ^
im still talking in-person with my advisor on Friday, but looks like as long as u are maintaining that minimum course load they don't care
ask your DSO as well
24k I think
I am interning right now. My school allows me to register for a 12 hour “class”
yep yep I've heard this, are you undergrad and on F1?
Yeah
and you're working full-time 40 hours right
Yep
only caveat im assuming is that it has to be virtual
yeah it’s virtual rn rip
when did uscis receive your app?
Will you now or in the future require visa sponsorship for employment at ****?
A) Yes, now
B) Yes, in the future?
what to select for summer intern?
i didn't get a dime back
wait can we claim the stimmy if we don't get it this year?
when filing taxes next year?
Are international students on study permit in Canada allowed to work remotely for a US company (from Canada) during the Summer term without sponsorship? Or do we require J1?
Hey everyone, is there any kind of list of companies/openings that offer visa sponsorship for new grad positions?
Help appreciated.
Anyone knows if we can quit an internship on CPT?
You can, just tell your DSO.
Would I get in trouble since I would no longer be doing 12 hours?
So I can’t quit then cuz then I would lose my f1 status since I dropped 12 hours
so this might sound dumb, but how can someone finance an MS in the US? saying parents is out of the questions. Just take a loan from a local bank?
How much money should you have to take the Visa?
Hello everyone, I have a question. Recently I applied a job and that company said will sponsor me the H1-b visa, I am based in Taiwan. Is that true? But I didn't take any technical screen test or interview. Now they register the H1-B 2022 cap and provide me a case number. I was wondering if I failed the technical screen test but I just happened got the H1-b selected? What would H1B visa be in the end? I also checked the site: https://www.myvisajobs.com/Reports/2021-H1B-Visa-Sponsor.aspx, that company is on the sponsor list indeed.
This isn't true. CPT is just that you have work authorization for that time period. I know colleges that give a week buffer before and after an internship to avoid legal mistakes.
is there gonna be a lottery for h1b in 2023?
USCIS is accepting OPT application online
Like online forms?
Yes exactly. You can file online form
what's the current wait time for EAD card?
5.5 to 7.5 months
My Post-OPT application was received by USCIS on March 1. When can I expect to get my EAD card?
Ok I think that's a coarse-grained estimate. Below that time range there's different time ranges dependent upon form type/purpose. For all qualified F-1 academic students it seems to be 3.5-4 months fyi. (https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/ - I chose I-765 and Potomac in the drop down options as most of the student apps from my college go there)
This site provides applicants the ability to see an estimate of the time to completion from submission of USCIS forms based on its adjudication location and subtype.
isn't march 13 the earliest when they can receive your application ??
Dunno. I got a text message saying my application was recieved and also got a physical mail on 5th March for the confirmation
Does anyone know what is the chance for undergraduates getting H1B visa?
where exactly can we do that ??
- Creating a USCIS account first
- Under Menu tab, choose Account Actions -> File a Form Online -> Application for Employment Authorization (I-765)
+1
Can you file online for OPT extension?
You file i765 for OPT extension? Then yes
Nope. It's just 90 days before your graduation date
I am also wondering same.
Holy shit!!! When did they start doing this? It's amazing
@remote roost any news from the firday DSO meeting
yes, they said it's fine as long as my advisor approves of it. and yes, it does have to be virtual or within commuting distance.
rip i also just talked to my advisor today
they said the diff was whether the internship is considered as required for major
or just for credit
which ultimately depends on your school
for credit is limited to 20 hours
ah, I see
she said some schools have intenrships as major requirements
is that what ur schools like?
they create a "internship class" and thats part of the CS major yea
idk tbh
there's a lot of "undecided" factors rn he said, if my school decides no virtual internships in the fall then game over
it all depends on that one advisor approving, they don't know the full answer rn
which is fine, because my AWS recruiter said they don't know whether it will be in person or not either
so if it happens to be in-person later I can just be like sike unfortunately my school isn't letting me now or something, should be fine
hmmmm yeah pretty confusing
yeah it's hella confusing, there's like different type of courses I can enroll with different credit hours
I can do like one 6 credit hour course or two 3 or one 1 cred so confusing
whatever, we'll see how it plays out ¯_(ツ)_/¯
for now im assuming something will go wrong and fall internship not possible and planning for the worst
just a few days ago
I love this administration omg
Also it looks like OPT processing already recovered from Trump
Don't wanna get political or anything but Trump administration was disastrous for legal immigration
President Biden plans to allow a moratorium imposed by Trump on H-1B visas used by tech companies to expire at the end of the month https://t.co/OkgOcgDLO3
Would think removing a ban on certain visas would be good in short term
Has anyone successfully filed OPT/OPT extension online?
does ibm sponsor?
what about ft
Is it possible for international students to renege an internship offer?
I heard some universities are strongly against it, may revoke CPT visa of the student
yo @cunning umbra
I got a job offer
foolish little boy
this is why i have no friends

How long does it take to receive EAD from filing an application for OPT extension these months? Can any guys share their info?
I recieved an update today from USCIS saying ‘New card is being produced’ for my EAD application. When can I expect to get the card
Hi guys, I previously was able to find a list of US companies that do visa sponsorship. (https://h1bdata.info/)
Are there any similar lists for openings and/or companies in other countries that will sponsor international students for work VISA? (Eg- Germany, UK, Canada, Singapore, Ireland, various European countries etc).
Help much appreciated.
Has any of you filed taxes on Sprintax for Robinhood's 1099? Sprintax's representative told me I had to do a 1099b for each transaction but it doesn't seem right, it's too much
Depends what stage you are at.
If you have already informed your career services at your school, DO NOT renege. They might actually do something like preventing you from doing CPT again.
however, if no one from your school (administration wise) knows that you've accepted the offer, yes, you can safely renege in a nice way, like find an actual probably reason and do it smartly
was in the same shoes before
Are international students in the US allowed to apply to Google Summer of Code?
they won't give you CPT
do we need CPT in the first place? is the program considered an internship or a job?
perfect
are you sure tho?
i don't want to get into any issues later on
amazing
is it okay if I dm you if I have questions?
Didn’t you get paid?
@faint hamlet I have confirmed that I can do fall full-time CPT as an undergrad even if it is in-person
I just need to maintain the 12 cred hour requirement. Confirmed with DSO.
If it is in-person I would maintain it by concurrent enrollment in another university nearby my work place.
I would enroll in a “face-to-face” CPT course - 3 credit hours
I would enroll in an online course - 3 credit hours
I would enroll in 6 credit hours worth of “face-to-face” courses in the community college - 6 credit hours
this would be the absolute worst case
yeah you get paid, not sure how this works if you don't have CPT
my school says even volunteer work has to be reported
do you have a coop? otherwise, that's very different from how I understand the restrictions
It also depends on how school tackles it for CPT application. For mine, I need to be part of the Coop program and can't find it on my own. If I get on my own, i have to contact the career center to approve my internship and then go to my advisor to get approval for CPT then go to ISSO lol
so yeah, I understand full-time during academic year is only possible if nyou have coop program
it's an internship class
my DSO said ok to what I pasted above
I'm maintaining valid F1 status
what is considered a "coop program"?
Curriculum based on a mandatory co-op, such as RIT, RPI, Northeastern, Ucincin ones
all CPT has to register for a "class" so that's not particularly special
i wonder if this is new regulations
it's based on school
it's an internship I think
In this case it's pretty simple: I am maintaining valid F1 full-time status via concurrent with a maximum of only 3 credit hours "virtual" in distance learning.
although all of this sounds like an absolute pain.
Yeah it's fine as long as you connect with ISSO and have it clear
my advisor said ok, dso said ok
but like idk if it is smart move
FT with AWS in the fall, and university in-person classes? all while interviewing for next summer?
setting myself up for failure i think
You have a lot
but don't worry about school just focus on internship cause that's a path to full time job
Try asking the school if you could take online classes
Yeah, the covid thing still hasn't been lifted I think
