Anyone knows of good L desks
ur setups are dope, i prefer zsbash tho
Mac>
ur monitor is so nice
@formal finch
Buy Eureka Ergonomic 61 inch L Shaped Desk, Home Office Gaming Computer Desk Corner Desk Table with Mouse Pad Easy Assembly, Left Side - Black: Home Office Desks - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases
I got it for super cheap lol
this is what i want to get when i move into my first apartment
I paid like 400 for it
OK
This was my setup before the big ass monitor lol
This is my current setup at home
do you enjoy that monitor? like what do you use it for?
because i want to get a third monitor
but honestly i think i will just build another PC tbh
im just dual rn , third would be dope
Playing games is so fun tho 🙂
idk how people do single monitor
three monitors is hella nice
i want to get rid of my monitor on the right in that picture of my setup
and then get two more monitors that are 1440p 144hz
so that all three of them are 1440p 144hz
1ms
I wonder how triple ultrawides would look
yeah
we got the same water bottle
mine is green
best water bottle ive ever had
bruh that water bottle is op honestly
always feel like drinkin it down
Contigo is literally the best water bottle
Contigo water bottle from middle school is still strong
I got a free ultra wide before lol
It was old guy that didn’t realized that he didn’t plug up the power supply lmao
bruh
also u could buy used monitors from your school bulk sales
alot of schools have surplus stores that they auction "old" tech away
yeah this is an easy way to get some tech/furniture
i need to go one of these days to buy a TV lol
lol
Salesforce Merch 😛
damn they gave you an infinity gauntlet of bags
Each bag contains an item
so u basically unbox each bag each day for the first week
so 5 bags 😛
apart from backpack
which is reallly nice
oh nice
bro wtf I want that school bag
Hahhaha
U ll get it dw 🙂
imagine hearing back from Salesforce
Imagine hearing back
I’ve been literally mostly only wearing Salesforce clothes for the past several days
They’re comfy
Hahaah
I really like the backpack though 🙂
Same 🙂
@craggy shuttle beautiful
Motherfuckers cancelled my final fuck them
i mean i did get salesforce and Tableau interview
failed interview and rejected after OA
factz dawg
Fuck Apple too because they don’t want me smh

whats ur specialization?
i remember oski telling ppl that apple is very team dependent and they have to reach out to you
and that you gotta specialize in smt cs related
I used to be hella active until I received my offer and now I just scrolled through 3667383 messages lmfao.
You do need to specialize with Apple. You also need to network with them. They interview by team.
Ayy my man @charred roost
Like my whole resume is web dev and a little bit of iOS
It's been a while lol
How'd the rest of your semester go lol
I been getting interviews with Apple but they just don’t want me lmao
Yessir, been a while.
Ended up w a C in 233 but other than that, p good. How about you?
That’s true but you can cold email them and if you have the exp, they will let u in
I managed to end with an A- in 233 and then Bs in everything else lol
I got so lucky with my 233 final
All my questions were from the practice
so I had the practice exams open on one window
I ended up w a C in 233 and A in everything else haha. I just gave up on comp arch though. Stopped doing labs and quizzes and what not.

and the actual exam on another
Nice
Yeah 233 became a hassle towards the end lol
Wyd for the summer?
Got an internship at Glassdoor for the summer so gonna be doing that
And then going to do some leetcode too
I gave up on SWE altogether.
: o
Nice
Imma stick to non swe CS.
Nice
How much they paying?
yea thats prolly why
meanwhile I applied to Apple with 0 iOS experience and only Android projects on my resume lmao
How many weeks and how much for the entire summer? $40 is solid tho.
12 weeks though I gotta cut it short a week since classes start up during the last week
and I gotta move to campus and get used to campus
I gotchu on this part.
Thanks lol
Haha. So like 18k for the summer?
It's all good, I'm not doing it for the money
shift to TX for this summer 😛
U ll be paying the taxes from where u intern
so u can make some frineds there 😛
And I believe Austin will be a hub soon
I need a change of scenery lol
Tired of the Bay Area
Although i ll come to bay area if i could get an offer for fte 😛
ull be going to chicago soon 😛
chicago ?
yes

yes
i think a lot of orgs still need ppl on web for internal tools lol
i dont think u actually need to be goated in ios
TFW you did a million extremely retarded things on a day in which your mentor was away and another team member was giving you a task and now that team member has no doubt that you’re extremely retarded
yeah I think the iOS teams are def hard to get into
The competition is at a higher bar
rly
idk every iOS ppl that interview for Apple r like wwdc scholars lol
true
Then again, it might be the sample size that I been speaking with lol
yea but I don’t think I will ever get into Apple for iOS lol
I’m more proficient in web than iOS
never hurts to apply
Apple hiring bar is super team dependent
Fffff issok I'm sure you're doing ok dwai
Also side note how do you go to one of the most liberal/progressive unis in the world and still use the word "retarded" that's crazy u got big balls man
… I used to use the word “dumb,” but I took an electromagnetism course last semester in which we studied retarded potentials and retarded green functions
So that word stuck to my mind
I only use those words to refer to myself
I’ll stop using those words
that was the most roundabout hilarious way of saying "i use the word because my brain is so huge"
… it’s true, though (not that my brain is huge, but what I explained) @low epoch
Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics is full of this stuff
That word should be completely fine to use
(as a fellow huge brainer, i think the word is not acceptable in most fields anymore but it's cool lol)
except the field of physics because hell yeah physics
Can someone here explain to me what really goes on during "onboarding"
Makes sense still would be careful in case cancel culture creeps up
like when I start my job in a week what in the world goes on during this process
Probably getting you used to culture and setting up your dev environment
Amazon's onboarding takes deadass 2 weeks
Mine that my "onboarding specialist" will be in contact with me "from now until about the 60th day"
60 day onboarding? Maybe the person's also your mentor?
It's an HR person 😂
Is it okay if I only use it to refer to myself/things I do?
Holy shit LMFAO
I'm sure most people who let it slip, including yourself, don't mean any harm. The word was acceptable some time ago (and an actual medical term). But I wouldn't suggest using it anymore. Words get negative connotation, their usage changes, it's just how language works.
Anyone know some good sites to find cheap temporary housing fast?
Ok thanks
TFW you’re about to miss a deadline for the second time in your internship
you already have deadlines for your internship that you just started?
was that explicitly stated or are you selfimposing deadlines
at least when i was in SF everyobdy was pretty chill about deadlines and didnt' have any hard deadlines for things
"You're about to".... you still have time then 🙂
I got a deadline for next Thursday and I haven't done shit lol gonna do some work over the weekend
They’re deadlines for logistical things like filling out timesheets and publishing my V2MOM
The intern website says “You will work with your manager to complete your V2MOM by the end of Week 2!”
But… my manager literally hasn’t mentioned this
And my mentor only sent me an email with examples
So I’m really lost
(Today is the end of Week 2 for me)
v2mom is a load of bs
I sent an email to my manager, saying excited to start this coming week. He sent me reply : "Great" 😛
Seems like they are pretty chill
I have literally absolutely no idea of how to start my V2MOM and the deadline probably has passed already :/
We only decided what my intern project is today
It makes me nervous not to know what the consequences are for missing the V2MOM deadline
Do you happen to know what they are @shrewd karma?
Inb4 I’m fired
more info should be in internal docs but you can always google it
i literally did 0 of the things on that timeline they give u
if ur manager hasn't mentioned it already, i wouldn't worry about it and like the other dude said, take a deep breath
^ Yeah if you manager hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Maybe your manager wanted to enjoy their memorial day weekend and casually forgot it lol
i would just worry about making sure you ramp up quickly enough and be sure to do pair programming w/ ur mentor to clear stuff up. i didn't do enough of that at first and my internship proj got delayed a bit
Pair programming? I haven’t been told to do that
I was mostly just given task after task
I should start my internship project sometime next week
I enjoyed doing this. Sometimes I daydream of clearing up my team’s entire backlog
would it be weird if I used the apple sticker that came with my macbook lmao
Has anyone havong problems with their work laptop?
I have been trying to log in and now stuck with IT support
Was just at Whole Foods and apparently all payment processing systems are down for all locations they said. Had to pay cash
Amazon interns what did you do???
V2MOMs take 10 mins tops
It's something you can ask your mentor if you (hopefully) have one once u start ur proj
make sure to underestimate and overdeliver
works wonders
How? I’m not sure about what to put in any of those fields
You did this at an internship? Was it faang / big N
hes still in high school bro
LOL
I gotta be careful listening to people in here
Wtf is he doing in the 2021 summer channel lol
hes not wrong tho
That advice can be good in some situations but it’s not necessarily universal
Look at Elon musk, constantly over promises and under delivers loll
So I am curious if it applies to a competitive internship.
naw heard it when browsing r/cscq
imma do it tho next week and see how it goes
i got one for the summer :
He said underestimate and over deliver👀
?
Nvm thought you got it backwards
oh lol
Im starting an internship On tueday
I have used 0 of the tools / frameworks will be using
how tf am i going to be writing code LOl
You somehow just do it @abstract wagon
I’m in the same situation, except that I didn’t know in advance
just pick it up
and start console.logging/printing stuff to understand wtf is going on
lmao my internship is all in react and js
my interview was asking java questions and now im using scala react and typescript
and I don't even know js
you pick it up p quick tho
go and kubernetes and dont know either too
have you coded in java or c before? The syntax is a little familiar then which helps
sameeee
honestly
also it helped me to like
usually places give you a few weeks-month to get caught up w stack
so dont be afraid
yea just console.log() and printLn() as needed
and teach myself stuff
typescript isnt that bad if u know java or c
ye i know java and c a bit
react i reccomend watching a course ; you're gonna have to juggle react fundamentals + html/css/js simultaneously
ive done html / css before in the past but by no means am i am expert
i just google " how to do this in css"
lmfao
as we all do lol
no
yeah im going through a react course rn
LMAO
for me i essentially remember some parts just bc ive done it so many times
all i got is background-color
ahh
like display flex , justify content center, align items center
yee
I mean we all use dev tools 😛 and stackoverflow
thank you!
i mjust worried
of being asked
to pair program
and just being like" hmm i dont know react yet"
you'll be fine lmao
idt theyll make u pair program on the first week lol
my entire team said i dont know have to know react / type script or scala
but then im like why u hire me then
thats gonna be a bit rough ngl but we'll help you out
just know flexbot in CSS
what do u mean help out
and just google everything
like for my tech stack im 50/50 w/ it rn but ik i can learn it on the spot
know concepts about CSS thassit
or do i go home after work
like basically just guide me on stuff if I'm confused
and work on it
you google everything anyway
also yeah my schedule is super lax
yea lol
oh
you just need to know what to google
bro they arent goinna expect you to know the tech stack as soon as you start
you'll get a good month to learn
also if they're telling u ur not expected to know this stuff
right right
they're not lying
okok phew
hopefully LOL
thanks guys
this is my first internship and last one before i grad
aight so you're set man
and like never be afraid to ask questions
yeah don't worry about that too much
for what its worth i was super nervous for my first internship and it definitely turned it to be for nothing
Your team will help you out
if ur not asking questions, then ur doing smt wrong @abstract wagon
and get you up to speed
yeah
the expectation
is that you have absolutely no idea what in the flying fuck is going on
welp thats me
aight ive been holding back on questions tbh...time to unload all of them on orienation day
y'all ever think about the fact that we're really out here learning how to do like
leetcode mediums and hards
only to center divs all day
wait one more question. im filling out a i-9 or some shit
for my address do i put my home
or like where im staying for the summer
like is "current residence" home or just a random airbnb im renting
I'd put ur permanent address
I feel really bad for having missed my V2MOM deadline
The tasks my team was giving me seemed more important to do 😦
I feel so lost
I don’t know what the consequences will be
Maybe SWE isn’t the best fit for you if you’re going to worry this much about nontrivial things, you just gotta realize they aren’t going to fire you or not give you return offers for small stuff...you’re trying your best. Communicate with your mentor and manager and you’ll be okay
Maybe you should try for like product management
i dont think that's really good advice
every job is going to be stressful at times and have deadlines
assuming you're not self-employed lmao
I think @sweet pollen should find ways to address the root cause of some of the issues they've been having, that being chronic anxiety
So what is a better option...
what is v2mom
What about v2dad
well Whole Foods does have its own intern program lol
A Salesforce thing
oh shit are you at Salesforce this summer
I could only dream of getting Salesforce
Yes. Why the “oh shit”?
salesforce good asf
Yeah highkey
Maybe see a therapist or something and they'll help you deal with your anxiety?
nothing bad, it’s like a, “oh shit that’s amazing!” lol
The amount of money you’re making
They cost ~$150/session and you need multiple sessions to get any benefits :/
I bought propranolol to help with my anxiety
So I’m waiting for that to arrive
It's good that you're taking steps to help manage your anxiety, but I do think professional help is important here. If money's an issue, there's a ton of free or cheap alternatives. I would check in with your school's mental health department and see if they have any resources. There's also this thing called myssp which is a free online mental health counseling service that I think might benefit you at least a little bit. https://myssp.app/ca/home
PM is a very stressful job - lots of meetings, you design the roadmap of the product and if something goes wrong, you're the primary one responsible. don't think that because PM is less technical that its any easier. People just need to choose jobs based on their strengths and what stress they can handle.
Yeah I realized once I said it you're completely right
yeah I just wanted to point it out since PMs are some of the most stressed out people I know 😓
Other people already replied to this, but I just wanted to say — it’s not the programming part of it that I’ve been failing on, it’s the logistical stuff like submitting my V2MOM and my timesheets on time
My manager probably just sees me as an extremely autistic serial deadline-misser now :/
don't overthink it. you just started and it can be hard to keep track of everything you need to get done. just create a list of things you need to get done by what date and put all of it on your work calendar.
Yeahhh :/
You’re not failing on submitting your V2MOM, if you’re really worried you can ask your manager about it
You can also talk to your manager about how you’re feeling but that you want to complete the work on time and shit
That would be an extremely awkward conversation to have with him
Especially since my last message to him was letting him know bout another deadline I missed (the deadline to fill out our timesheets for the first week) and that was on Tuesday and he never replied
I'll talk to my mentor
But it feels so bad to know I did that
I'm fucked :/
anyone have a good resource on what i should do during my internship aside from the work
like setting up coffee chats, setting weekly goals with my manager etc during an internship
leetcode
grokking and blind 75
thats prob as much as i can do in 3 months time
go higher
be sad now and be happy later
lol

you can probably do more, i went frmo 168 -> 400 problems in the last 3 months with less than 10 hrs a week on leetcode
i guess ill see
😩
i just wanna make the most outta my internship
any tips would be great !
communication is everything
always communicate issues/ask for help from mentor/manager
keep tabs on your progress
etc.

How wtf
What's so shocking about that lol
That’s a lot of problems lmao
Okay well 3 months is about 90 days even If you do 2 problems a day that's still like 180 problems which is a similar amount
My employer name is icici . For a moment I got curious why’s anyone talking about such an obsolete company
Are there still any places looking for summer 2021 interns anymore?
Like I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone applying at this point so I thought I'd ask
Plenty on LinkedIn
I'm still looking for a summer internship
tbh what happens if you just pretend u have a competing lol
I don't think we can negotiate intern offers. Can we? 🤔🤔
Just pray with them for more money
i have before for a small company
think MLH fellowship with FB is still taking apps
not 100% sure hto
you could be like the guy who was here a long time ago
got rejected from verizon
lied and said he had a competing offer but would still like to work at verizon
they reinterviewed him and he got a verizon offer
(don't do this at all, he got insanely lucky)
Time to do this with google
i think someone did that with stripe actually
they tried to email randomr recruiter
and say they never got a response on setting up the phone interview
and they didn't even get the OA
idk how that turned out tho
What's that?
Going for the high reward with the risky play
New track in production engineer partner with Facebook
where does one apply for this
MLH website
ah okay sounds good ty
first day of internship tomorrow.. pretty nervous wish me luck
Good luck!
I've still got another week until mine starts
still haven't recieved any of my tech though lol
I hope so lol
where r u interning ?
seattle startup
Nicee
Yeah, My intern starts tomm as well
ahh where are you working
Salesforce
awesome any tips for someone entering their first one?
Hope this one goes good, very nervous and aiming to get return so I had to grind a lil less for new grad interviews
yeah salesforce is a great new grad landing spot
Naah, just be curious and keep asking questions this is what i have been hearing
thanks!
In an interview if I get asked a question like "Do you know TypeScript" but I only know a little bit about it, then what should I say?
That you only know a little bit about it lol
Never lie about your experience in an interview, 9/10 they can pick up on bs very fast
Should I say something along the lines of: "I have some exposure to it, but I'd love to use and learn more about it "
Fuck
I restarted my work computer and it now won’t turn back on — oh, it just did, after 5+ minutes dead
TFW the computer says “About 9 minutes remaining” and you thought this would be a quick mandatory patching update
idk I lie during my interview
It works
Just don’t make up crazy lie like I built the whole backend by myself like a chad
extrapolating the truth is ok
Ye I just don’t risk it cuz it could literally kill the interview but if you pull it off why not
true
It was a madator patching i think its fine
I did it too
took me 10 mins i guess although it was mentioneing 36 mins
Tfw u dont know whete it initslly executes
LMFAO I was thinking the same thing
Honestly u just gotta start at one point and just flow thru
Startups gonna expect more from u so don’t worry if u feel lost at first
^^
Awesome, I’ll have to show my extremely bad 50-word V2MOM to my manager (who hasn’t replied to my last message in 1+ weeks) before publishing it. And he’ll know that I’m very late.
No chance I’m getting a return offer
I acted so poorly in my first (and last) meeting with him. He spent almost all of the time talking about what makes software engineers great, and I don’t think I sounded interested on what he said at all (even though I’m constantly remembering what he said)
He probably doesn’t even want to think about me anymore after I acted so poorly during that first meeting :/
Also — my manager said he wanted me to work on an 8-week project, but that’s literally not possible anymore because our PM has been busy with other things and everything keeps getting delayed
:/
What year are you in?
cause it's literally only been one month. You have time to bring it back and learn and produce good results.
Regardless of that, so what if you don't get a return offer to one company ,it looks great on your resume and you can move forward and go to another company. This is a learning opportunity
you'll perform a lot better if you don't worry about whether or not you get an offer
ngl u prob doing better than their expectations
interns have a low bar expectation
so don’t sweat too much lol
^
well... i wouldn't say it's a low bar, perhaps lower relative to the FTers
Yeah I mean there are expectations but I think they have alot more leniency
the only expectation I see with my internship is just passion for learning
and just being a good coworker
That's the biggest thing
factz
I'd rather have a good coworker than a piece of shit who knows alot
That's my opinion ig
yea same here
ngl culture is sleep on bro
like I get that u need to qualified for the role, but you literally spending 8 hrs with a homie
so, u want find someone that you enjoy to be around with
i agree that a passion for learning is a must. i just think that if you're constantly underperforming it might not be enough
That's fair but I feel that in the first couple of weeks maybe even one month there's a large environment change and general steep learning curve
the imposter syndrome lmfao
@sweet pollen Message your mentor (and/or manager) for a 1:1. If it's been over a week since you've spoken to him, there's something wrong
Yeah defo^ I talk to my mentor multiple times a day
but you gotta realize the logic behind it all is quite the same, you just need to get used to the syntax. I think the biggest thing that I've been told from developers and stuff is that you're not expected to know every damn language in the world, it's about knowing the ins and outs of the logic and just getting used to the syntax
my manager gave me tech debt tickets on my 1st day. now 3 weeks in i'd say i'm pretty comfortable with the code base and ruby/rails even though i've never worked on it before
i thought that was a pretty good way to get someone familiar with the code
I literally talk with them every few hrs
I only talk to my mentor if run into a blocker on my project, so some days I don't talk to them at all lol
I feel like I won’t be talking much with ppl from my team since each of them are either staff/principal engineers
But ima bug them nevertheless lmao
If I get the location I want I wouldn’t mind returning but I’m prolly not so idk
I'm scared to bug them about questions I could figure out on my own
If you think you can figure it out yourself, try yourself first
but if you get stuck then obv reach out for some direction
Usually I try to figure out for 1 to 2 hrs before reaching out for help
Idk if that’s too long or short
i think 1-2 hours is fair
fr and im the only intern in my team
Same I’m the only full time intern but I have part time intern on my team but he’s working on different project
did ur manager say you even have to do the V2MOM?
all the interns i knew who did well were all chill af and didn't stress tbh
I didn't write a single line of code for the first 2 weeks lmao
Same
The closest I have is this new guy who they onboarded a day or two before me
wow, for me the newest guy was like december 2020 but man
theres so much to learn
Same
he never mentioned that, but the recruiters did say I needed to do it
recruiters schmecruiters
i cant remember the last time i listened to a recruiter who didn't just repeat rules from an employee handbook
you should ask your manager and see what they say, i bet they don't care as much
Did anyone recently received an offer from Equinix for the Software Engineering Intern starting June 21?
those mfs ghosted me then accepted once my current internship already started
I feel so lost 🙃 after attending meeting with my team.
same
🙄🙃
Ngl I don’t know what’s happening in standup and sprint planning
which company
SF
what is SF
Salesforce maybe
Ive gotten my project changed for the third time now
Project 1 was too easy and too interny, project 2 was too hard and abstract, was scheduled to finish next yeat, and now project 3 at first glance I dont even have an interest in tbh
And all 3 times it was the team that decided to switch me lmao not me
Yea he did the cool one and now im here sad n shit
Did uk Frank
Yea lmao thing is the team has 2 interns this time and I think they where expecting 1 lmao, the other person has a proper well defined project and mine is kinda meh, lots of changes to what im doing
where r u interning at?
Salesforce
How much time does it usually takes to get upto speed ?
TONS of internal words, acronyms, platform specific stuff that you probs wouldnt have heard unless you are a salesforce admin or certified
SF unicorn
idk about usually but I got up to speed in a week, setting stuff up and understanding org/code structure, and created my first full PR today
It takes about two or three weeks to get up to speed from what I experienced before
Took me two days to set up my dev environment
Whoever got McDonald's internship for SWE, what did they ask you
lmfao
Yeah lmaoo it's real their senior vice pres messaged me today
Apparently it's super competitive 😂
their work is actually pretty cool though
So I went last year to their chicago office
When I used to work as a crew there (had lots of involvement with executives cause of projects) they're working on a LOT of AI stuff
Lowkey they're gonna get bare backlash with how many jobs they're gonna cut
Like they recently just started testing 10 McDonald's in Chicago
with fully automated drive thru's
hmm, automated french fries
thats super cool
agreed but apparently alot of it like their jobs aren't even advertised gotta know someone to get in
so rip
if their work is that cool i'm surprised tc isn't more competitive
but regardless sounds like a great experience
let us know how it goes 💪
Oh I didn't get it LOL I was curious as to who the person was that got it
Can anyone share their experience with their internships thus far? I start my first one on Monday and will be working with recommendor systems which I have no experience with so I'm pretty nervous. I know each company is different but am just wondering how everyone has adjusted
My internship has been pretty good so far. It’s almost like it didn’t start
I'm not following you. It's almost like it didn't start?
First two weeks I did basically no real coding. It was mostly reading documentation, trying to figure out wtf is going on in the codebase, and building up a plan of what I'm doing this summer
I'm finishing up my third week and I've been doing tickets related to my task + picking up minor bugs here and there
I just meant my internship didn’t start either
Okay that's a little reassuring to hear. But you feel your transition has been pretty smooth? I'm feeling a bit of imposter syndrome atm, especially since machine learning is pretty new to me 😬
Bro I'm feeling so much imposter syndrome
But I think that's p normal
I've literally been like
console.logging everything lmao
ahh gotcha yeah i'm trying to enjoy my last days of freedom before i have to start waking up early T_T
trying to figure out what's going on
also like I'm doing work in react
and my entire backgorund in react
was a crash course I did a few days before starting lmao
lmfao
to sing "pa da pa pa pa"
Definitely normal. No one knows what they’re doing
^^^
sounds accurate
yeah that was definitely me, crash course also XD
And okay, glad to hear nobody else knows what they're doing
but it seems like my team basically expects me to know nothing starting out
so they've been super helpful making time to answer questions + walk me through things
my biggest suggestion would be to ask for help in your team slack channel if you have one
that way you'll get to know your other team members
and you'll get help a lot faster
that's awesome! i hope my team is the same. okay i will definitely do that, ask lots of questions and yes, get to know my other team members
plus if you're working on something someone else made, it's helpful to be able to talk to the person who designed that piece of code
are your team members other interns or FTs or a mix if you dont mind me asking?
they're all ft
very true
I'm the only intern on my team lmao
oh shit lmfao
thats kind of nice though
well, i can see it from both perspectives tbh lol
yeah I have no one to compare myself to, and it forces me to get to know my team better
rather than only talking to other interns
Those connections are gonna be op
one thing you should be prepared for though: you're gonna feel like you're bumbling around with very little idea of what's going on
which can be stressful
but console printing is your friend
same with stack overflow lmao
My internship is not even an internship. It’s a warm up for the internship next summer
and don't expect to be able to pump out tickets like eveyone else. Something that takes a ft engineer 30 mins is gonna take you a few hours
mostly bc you'll be scouring through documentation trying to figure out how stuff works
all of which is normal
yeah that's a very fair point. i'm not sure if i'll be the only intern on my team or not. and yeah that makes sense. it's all a learning experience, need to remember that and chill out
i kind of hope i'm the only intern on my team now 😅
just keep in mind to underestimate and overdeliver
works wonders
well underestimating has never been a problem before so hopefully it won't be now XD
oh no i meant during tasks
ohhh okay i see lol yeah i do that for research all the time and you're right, it does work wonders
fr, this past week (my fist week)
idk whats going on LMAOOO
so i was like fk it and asked a senior swe on what I should research for this proj
the imposter syndrome be REAL REAL
a HM at a top company posted something about hiring (summer?) interns who can "start immediately". I reached out to him 2 days ago on LinkedIn but haven't heard back. Can I assume I was ghosted?
Actually, I filled out a google form but was wondering if I should direct message him too? Or does that look too needy/desparate 😦
just send him a follow up
he might have bare messages
had to fill a simple google form, didn't message him already
but yeah he might actually have bare messages
hope it works out for you
I really do hope so man. I'm starting to feel so depressed every fucking day and its eating into my study time too.
Can't stand how luck is pretty much the only thing you need in this process
Lol
tell me about it, I have internship experience + good GPA + TA experience I haven't gotten one call back in the past 2-3 months
What year are you? I didnt get my first internship til this summer and I'm graduating in December. There's still time. I get it with the depression though lol
Masters student
Are you looking for summer internships?
fall
waymo has some fall intern openings
Ah okay I see. It's a tough time right now with COVID and I'm sure your masters program is difficult. You will find something I'm sure. Hang in there! I feel it too though, I'm really burnt out
it's easy, i can teach you all you need to know right now
- pass by reference vs pass by value
- learn
cout/cinstuff - always use smart pointers
include namespace std;in header- when you look up documentation, copy the most convoluted looking code snippets
the waymo posting is broken
I'm a python scrub C++ looks like some next shieet
I never learned about smart pointers in my c++ class
I’m going to DEMO SOMETHING IN 5 MINS TO MY MANAGER MY HEART IS JUMPING OUT OF MY BODY THE PROPRANOLOL I BOUGHT IS GOING TO ARRIVE TOMORROW BUT THAT’S WAY TOO LATE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Good luck it'll be fine !
I did it
And how was it
I'm sure it was great
Damn didn’t know internships were that stressful
I know ^ mommy i'm scared 😩
look at mine
I wanna die on a daily basis
Lol just apply to PwC. Being at Deloitte you should get an interview
I don't wanna staay in consulting
there was a small data science youtuber who got a job at deloitte and started end of august. before then they uploaded frequently and proposed a new schedule bc of the job. he hasnt been online
My V2MOM is like 50 words long and I had to ask my manager to review it anyway because I know myself and there’s no way I’m going to make it better any time soon :/
No return offer for me
Rip

is it you?
Maybe

if you're offered a return offer at the end of the summer, does that mean they are gauranteeing you a job after graduating the following Spring?
Probably
some may include part time during the semester into full time following spring
if ur into that, im sure you can push that off
anyone have any tips to ignore feelings of inadequecy because of not finding a job so I don't fuck up my final exam on Tuesday? Does any method work in ignoring these thoughts for now?
Honestly I'd try talking to a counselor or something if I could. Or even a close friend. I completely get where you're coming from, and often feel pretty similar. I think the biggest thing is to take a step back, spend some time with friends, and do something fun
If you're ever feeling especially bad or need someone to talk to
Dm me
You can spend time building some projects around this summer. Not a big deal and keep hunting for fulltime after taking a short break.
i always feel better after a good workout or yoga. my anxiety is pretty bad atm so i'm going for a bike ride. i agree with babib about counselor also. do you have school counselor you can utilize?
I do have a counselor but our meeting is only on Monday
are these feelings of inadequacy persistent? if seeing your counselor isn't enough, there's no shame in getting additional help. but also like jane street said, you can build projects over the summer to fill up your time
Yeah it’s been ever since I didn’t get a return offer at faang
And just added more damage to other feelings of inadequacy I guess
but you interned faang? that in itself is impressive so you should definitely give yourself credit. things tend to work out as they're meant to so i would just try and forget all that for now, focus on studying but remember to take breaks in between and do something nice for yourself
^
Yeah I did. Honestly I don’t have much time to find a job here (I graduate December) and my home country (india) is in the middle of a big recession rn so going back there is just not an option
just focus on your exam that you have tuesday and then maybe set a reasonable goal of how many jobs you want to apply for a week. something will come up
i mean, it clearly hasn't gotten me over the line because the only thing that matters is whether you can solve leet regardless of its difficulty
should i DM a HM who posted about a PM intern role? I filled out a google form he linked on his post but idk if he's seen my linkedin profile or not
i would
On a Saturday? Or should I wait till Monday
I don't know if it really matters. You might not get a response til monday but it's up to you. either way i think it's a good move to make
and i still think having faang on your resume will help a lot, that is a huge accomplishment regardless
Leetcode, you can work on! Your fang internship is gonna help you a ton in getting interviews. Also, I'm sure having that fang internship will help you if you apply full time to that company later on (like new grad position)
^ exactly
Yeah maybe, my “cooldown” period from my internship that I failed to convert is passed now but idk if they’ll take me back let alone without more experience
The only way to assure you 100% don't get that ft offer is to not apply
I'm sure you'll be fine
Especially with covid
Just keep your head up and keep trying
i wouldn't look at it as a failure dude. you literally got an internship from faang, that's huge. keep applying and doing lc, something will definitely come up for you
I mean nothings wrong with failing. It’s how you bounce back that matters
very true
True that
why didn't you get a return offer? did they say?
needed too much handholding with some db optimization part even tho there was 0 documentation in the org
see that is what i'm nervous about. at my internship lots of people give the advice "ask lots of questions" but then i hear about stories like yours
@frail birch where are you interning?
at the end of the day it's all about how the team takes it. my team didn't wanna help me out and my manager only took me on to boost his people axis so he could get a promo to engineering manager, so yeah he kinda wanted to take the back seat and not do shit with me
one of uber/lyft/airbnb
what about your mentor
Never heard stories like that 😦 I guess I’ll stop asking questions
i didnt have one throughout the internship, the one who was initially assigned changed teams and went to a different city
@runic tinsel where did you intern?
ive kinda hinted where ive interned lol
amazn or facebook is my guess
you need to ask good questions
my mentor rly liked my questions b/c i started off with "I tried X and this didn't work because Y but it helped me figure out specific detail about Z. [some more specific question about Z]"
i'm still in the stage of writing the tech spec
i think it will be the most difficult part because i'm trying to both learn this new complex system as well as design different approaches/solutions to one of its problems/limitations, at the same time
TFW you've needed too much handholding so far so won't get a return offer
Lol
have you had a mid performance review yet?
usually your mentor should tell you if you are on track for a return offer there
No
You can also ask for feedback whenever you want. If you think you're not on track to a return offer, I would ask what you can improve on ASAP imo
If u don’t mind asking, how long have u been there?
tbh if it’s under 5 weeks, u should be fine in terms of getting help
It’s take awhile to ramp up to speed
If then, ppl who are coming in as new grad takes about 6 months or so to get to speed with regulars
FTE
damn i pinged my mentor like too much
but he is kinda helpful and responding me toooo fast hahaha
The thing i hate with remote is i cant tell when my mentor is busy
So idk if im annoying or not
yea and u can’t read their body language too
I’m unsure if they are annoyed or pissed thru a message
That’s what having autism is like all the time 😅
My internship is a little overwhelming, there is just so much going on, so many technologies and I don't fully understand the process
what you working with?
im kinda scared to start my internship on monday ngl lol
mainly the meetings / presentations sound scary
My internship starts tomorrow and I have nowhere to live :(
why are you starting later? didn't school end like half a month ago?
:(
Do u guys participate a lot during meetings
I feel like I should but at the same time I don't rly know what to contribute
I would say typically know the work you're working on. I wouldn't really think they would ask you explicitly
Yeah I do talk Abt my project but like i feel like I can't about other stuff
Such as? You mean like engage in a general conversation or something?
this is normal, but you should read up on history of slack messages and try to get involved in everything
while the words they talk about may seem complex it's not that difficult to digest if you break it down, just understand what they are talking about and speak your mind
I’m scared to start my internship on the 14th
Yeah general conversation about other projects
Same
My first week is like orientation ending with do this dothis do this
They sent me the wrong computer and tech support has been unhelpful so far. I start monday. They just told me “your issue is in the ticket system” but nothing else. My supervisor knows
I asked for mac but they sent windows lol
Node, react, and express which is fine but all the docker, kubernetes, aws, etc stuff is confusing
It's also weird cause it's my first time with such a big codebase
Same
Anyone starting their internship tomorrow too?
I am, I'm pretty nervous but also excited. I don't have experience with what project I'll be working on though which is recommendor systems but hoping I can pick it up and have a good mentor
You have nowhere to live? Why?
didn’t want to burn myself out
I thought I had apartment but it turned out to be full of cockroaches
First day tomorrow. Nervous 😬
Same I'm getting pretty nervous as well now
Plus I start at 7 in the morning because they're 2 hours ahead and ever since schools been out I've been on a terrible sleep schedule 😩
Oof
i did 1:1s with my team the 2nd week and just started the conversation about with generic questions about their background at the company and usually they ask me about stuff about myself and it kinda just goes from there.
Its okay because west coast > east coast
nyc gets an exception tho
Any tips on how to receive a full-time return offer from your internship?
From what most people say here, just try to be an effective member of your team that actively participates in meetings, asks a lot of questions, and works hard
make sure to not steal the entirety of company snacks or harass anyone
i vaguely remember a thread and those 2 were mentioned on how not to get a return offer
True I don't mind finishing work at 3 but I really should've pulled an all-nighter and reset my schedule 😬
I'll make sure to do that
Do you think I should be upfront and ask "Am I on track to get a return offer?" or is that too much lol
Maybe it'll just depend on the vibe of my managers
I think it might just depend on your manager's tbh
But I'm not 100% sure myself since I haven't even started my internship lol
Same, mine starts tomorrow
My internship on EST while I live on PST, looking forward to it lol
Oof, good luck and have fun
anyone just absolutely lost? lol
nobody ever tells you about the actual internship, just about getting one
^ facts
Nah it's fine to ask that. If anything, it shows that you know what you want.
If you're ever lost in a meeting, or a conversation is about to start and you know you won't have the necessary context, just ask for someone to give you that context. Say something along the lines of "Sorry for interrupting, but I'm having trouble following the conversation. What is XYZ [project/jargon/whatever]?" Usually people are pretty understanding and will briefly summarize what's going on.
I've been asking shittons of questions after I started full time, and my only regret is not having asked more questions during internships.
first day tomorrow as well, very nervous as well haha
wait so your manager doesn't ask you a LC hard during the 1:1's??
any advice for getting over nervousness for meetings & the presentations they have us do?
What kind of meetings, like standups? For presentations, my main recommendation would be to practice until you can give the presentation naturally and without any notes.
And do dry runs with different team mates ahead of the actual presentation to get feedback
ah ok & this is my first internship so idk what type of meetings they usually have but i guess more design discussion type meetings
Ah ok, np, thanks for clarifying. I'd suggest remembering that meetings are ultimately just conversations where people are trying to solve some problem or coordinate some task. Everyone is working together towards a common goal, so it's never in the team's interest to put one specific teammate on the spot, if that's the type of thing that worries you. Other than that, just be prepared for meetings (it helps me to take 10min before a serious meeting to lay out my thoughts) and be honest when communicating. Ik this is probably standard advice, but there isn't any magic to it imo lol.
gotcha, yea being put on the spot was my main concern
thanks for the advice
np man, always happy to help
Happy first day of work to everyone that’s starting their internship today!
Lmao

man he's really not giving up is he
Lol ban the guy
Wait who
A guy showed up saying he had an OA from Robinhood and asked for people to help him
No clue
Me: does things at a glacial pace, feeling guilty almost every second for getting distracted or getting things wrong or otherwise not making progress faster
My mentor: “That was quick!”
You're definitely working a lot better than you think you are
No need to be so hard on yourself, you're doing just fine
Interns arent expected to be super genius senior level engineering smart
so at my internship interns are required to read a book throughout right
I start in 1 weeks cuz quarter system. They started a week ago
Am i about to have to play catch up on the book cuz theyre gonna have multiple meetings for the book thing by the time i start
nah I don't think so
My internship has two different start dates to accommodate different school dates
And they both have onboarding time periods
you're not expected to work all 8 hrs
i maybe work 3-4 hrs max out of the 8 hrs and watch yt/mess around and my mentor says im ahead in the one on ones
Damn
Where are you interning if you doing mind?
Damn the moment I start setting up my dev env, my internet decides to stop being speed smh
I feel kind of depressed after my orientation today ngl 😩
Impostor syndrome definitely starting to hit after orientation ngl
And after taking a took at the instructions to set up my dev env, I feel kinda stupid too lmao
I am having impostor syndrome being in the MLH Fellowship lol
Every other fellow is like way better than me
No kidding 😭 Also I can't really understand my manager's accent so I'm pretty sure I said "okay" when he was asking me a question
Dude all the other interns at Glassdoor are masters students and MBA candidates
I got in with a simple Alexa app and there are people working on open sources and coding since they're 11
But it was on the phone so it was already hard to hear
Lol rip
My manager seems to be a chill dude though
We had a one on one meeting and he came in a lil late bc he was busy listening to music
Yeah I feel the same, I feel out of place also. Yeah I have a 1:1 tomorrow so hopefully I will be able to hear him better then and touch base better ugh
Lol that's funny
He's real chill lol
Yeah it should go fine, your first 1:1 meeting isn't gonna be super stressful
Yep lol
The company as a whole seems pretty chill ngl
We even have a wsb channel in our slack
And people are taking about their GME and AMC investments
That's real cool lmao
just a startup lol
That's pretty nice haha
My first day was just me doing a tutorial saying insider trading is bad lol
It's never too late for 1:1s, i'm in the same position as you. spent the first 2 weeks meeting half the team, forgot about the other half. probably going to hit them up tomorrow for some time this week
How would you suggest setting up 1:1s with the rest of the team? Emailing them and asking to meet?
yes, give some suggested times perhaps as well
Okay thank you
don't give them suggest times, as an intern you want to be respectful and work around their schedule as they're probably busier than you are
Okay how should I even word it? Just say I would like to meet with them personally, hear about their experience, etc if they have availability?
Hey {inset name}
Hope you're doing well and staying safe, I'm Heather an intern on the team, I was wondering if you had time some in the near future for a quick coffee chat to talk about your experiences, and any general advice you could give me. Thank you so much for your time and take care.
Sincerely,
Heather
idk something like that lmao^
you could probably explain some more regarding being an intern on the team and maybe their experiences being like a senior (if they're like an older person on the team) etc
Okay thank you, that sounds really good lol
np lol
ask them if they're free this week or next, usually they'll tell you exactly when they're free or tell you to pick a time in their calendar
If ur company uses Outlook, jus ask if their calendar is up to date and book it urself if they reply it is
gets things moving a lot faster than asking back and forth for availability
Okay yeah my company uses outlook. That's okay to do? Just book myself in their schedule? Lol
Ugh dude I have to get up at fucking 5am tomorrow
"Hi, I'd like to meet whenever's convenient to chat. We can meet around x or y time/day or i can also book something on your calendar for x or y day"
i guess somethin like that lol
Yeah that sounds good and cuts to the point
that was too brief/direct but u get da point
That's good saves those dreaded back and forth emails that give me anxiety
yeah emails are just: direct, respectful, we can do x, or we can do y"
The 195 iq move is to book yourself a full time offer interview after graduation
depends on who it is, if it's my senior I usually talk to her like "yo Idk wtf I'm doing tbh"
she's like my "buddy" that basically helps me and shit
and we're the only two brown people on the team LOL
is anyone currently doing IBM accelerate program?
Does anyone know if there's any similar program like the CodePath Summer program? I'm looking for a way to practice for interviews this fall on top of just doing Leetcode
^ also curious
^ curious +2
if u didnt get into the program you can always audit it and have access to all course materials. @noble solar @quartz roost Additionally theres a server where a few of us are going to be going through the course and meeting weekly to basically simulate the course. PM me if you want the server invite!
I would love the link. Im actually going through the intermediate course as a spectator and would love other people to go through the course
All the other interns for my job are from GOAT schools then there’s me
Same
me too!
Lmfao
