at facebook, my SWE intern friends implemented new features in existing internal tools- you code and have meetings with UI/UX designers and product managers to design the features and implement them. there are revisions and multiple versions before you finish to get a final product hopefully by the end of the internship. it's pretty rare for an intern to be able to directly on the actual app, but I do remember there were some who worked on Facebook dating before its official rollout

WLB is pretty mixed - i personally had a manager that told me to not work after hours but other managers didn't really care and some people worked on weekends or really late until 9. People work themselves to near-burnout to get the return offer

I found that I had more meetings post WFH and being productive was slightly harder

but I also had more of an opportunity to set my own hours to match productivity

#

e.g. I'd take a 2 hour lunch and take a break to cook dinner then come back later and work another couple hours

so I got the same amount of work done but got to relax during the day and reset
