okie dokie
do u guys network on linkedin because of covid?
and should i start networking now?
I hit up friends and friends of friends as well as alums
Doesn't work lol
My family's referral from msft didn't help either
Isn't networking overrated
For swe
Ig how u network
Makes a diff
I always see linkedin posts be like "treat linkedin like it's ur ft job"
"i got all 5 jobs at fb google cuz of networking"
also, should i expect to get more oa's from bigger companies going into my junior year?
because its been straight ass for me 😭
Yeah just wait til upper yr

Also some jobs directly ask for 2022 grads
So ur kinda gg on those ones
best way to get internships is to have experience already tbh
Yo sounds like what i did past summer
hopefully that will help me
It was for school club
ooo thats nice
im currently trying to help build the esports website for my club lolol
Although my interview for that was hard
😭
👀
Nice
I solved the medium too quickly so they gave me a greedy qn
That I thought was dp
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think school stuff is less intense
@ionic bronze for me it was a society in my uni lol
thats mad fucked for a school
wtf
and shouldnt they go easier on student dev positions
they gave you a LC med
They prob weren't expecting me
for a student dev position
It was threesum
threesum isn't too bad
still i wouldn't really expect an average student at my school to know how to solve three sum
I took 10 minutes to recognize a codesignal problem as two-sum
Hell, even two sum
two-sum is the bane of my existence tbh
i was asked two sum for the tech role in the esports club
@lunar burrow yo is it the anagrams
noice
but i did it ineffiecient
i would have thought
they'd care more about idk
idk dude my memory is shot
i was like u can use maps?
lmfao
i forget the problem like 2 minutes after the oa
imagine solving two sum
two sum op
i love sorted two sum
my favorite variation of two sum
hmm, i wonder if there's a way to solve sorted two sum in O(logn)
i think they asked me anagram too
did u use a hashmap?
honestly i forget
it was like 2 months ago
oh i remember what i did, map it and decrease the the string occurence
something like that

@lunar burrow lmao kek
What does it mean if I didn’t hear anything from google today?
I applied in October
For swe internship
I heard a bunch of people got rejected
And I heard absolutely nothing
Is it good bad or neutral?
Neutral
??
anyone hear back for MS Garage?
TC is less at senior levels
Yes.
thats actually hilarious
When do applications for Fall/Spring Internships open
Taking a semester off to intern would be pretty interesting
Are you talking about intern or ng?
If that’s for me, intern
I only know ng has 2 questions for each coding round
Most Fall opens in January but some open before that
Cause their summer apps are open so you can just convert summer to fall
Spring opens in August
also amazon is sending swag boxes when you accept the intern offer 👀 what if someone accepts for the swag then reneges
LMAo
okie dokie, grind season it is

i think i saw that on linkedin, pretty cool fr
Apply to datadog!!!
dog data?
what do they do 👀
Datadog is a data monitoring and analytics service simply put if you have a website/web app and want to keep track of what happens then you’d use Datadog
Hahahaha
amazon kekw
prob did it for privacy
whats datadogs intern process
nvm
i thought it said u gotta start in july and I was like heh
and i thought it might bop some summer internship
Nah that’s for 6 months co ops usually they make you start in July
Datadog i started August 31
Damn I feel personally attacked
August! Some places can do July too like Goldman does July
August op
when should I be applying for fulltime jobs if I graduate fall 2021
😈
Idk I’m FT and my onsite isn’t until February
Same as people graduating Spring 22. Just ask for earlier start date
So start mid-late summer 21
Also anyone heard back from fbu for engineering?
anyone been through nvidia process that I can dm? ik it's probably heavily team dependent but got reached out to
which team?
not sure what they do honestly lmao, but I think it's an embedded team in MA
Ah cool, my initial phone screen with them was fun because I got to talk to a member of the team instead of a recruiter
^ that is always fun
explaining your projects to a recruiter got me dead
they just nod their head
facts but sometimes thjats good im ngl
cuz sounds more legit
cant bs to an actual engineer
fr tho
they were like you def sound very knowledgeable and i was
(I'd rather hit the coderpad once I'm better at leetcode)
pltr down
current company wants me to decide on them in 1-2 weeks but i'm still waiting on vmware and other companies but I want vmware the most
what's a good way to email the recruiter telling them I have other offers but I want their decision because I want them the most out of all the places
facebook calls to reject
Does Facebook email? I got email from recruiter asking if im interested
like bruh just send OA dont even got to ask
amazon changed their amazon future leaders program name to amazon propel program
Anyone have success with fintech?
like stripe, rh?
Damn that’s rough I’m sorry, what’d they say?
Is Facebook still recruiting?
Yeah
Did someone say they’re almost filled up?
Also does anyone know how not to get ghosted by them? Referral didn’t do shit for me
How much does behavioral matter in amazons interview
depends on ur interviewer
did u try email
I tried adding like 16 recruiters on LinkedIn and none accepted the request
Would emailing recruiters be more effective?
Gotta email Zuck
I can just get the emails through salesql (I’ve tried this site and ~55% of the emails I’ve gotten are accurate, which isn’t bad).
Has anyone ever had success emailing a Facebook recruiter?
I think it's best if you contact your school recruiter
yes
How would I find them? No one seems to list this on LinkedIn
Explain
idk mine was easy to find
At the end of the day, all I need is one to push me forward
i got an interview from email
nice
also possible that your school doesn't have one
please explain
Did u find one on LinkedIn?
And use salesql?
shut up
why do you hate me
But I’m collaborating with some faculty on a few projects
nah i already knew my school recruiter
thru events
I’ve had this happen to me
did u pass
i might crapshoot a bunch when my finals are done too

my finals are done but i feel so lost goose 😂
i pushed back a few interviews i had prefinals
i finished my last one yesterday but i have a project due tn i just started

i have an interview next monday
Hell no
we got an A in OS boys and girls
thats all that matters
i am scared of OS
i still dont know page table and caches well
apparently that appears in OS

VM and syscalls are aids
sounds aids
computer arch is also aids
after i went to uni i realized i hated hardware
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Is comp arch even useful class? Optional in my curriculum
ok i just kinda hate the way its run
ive become a VIM master in the last month
its useful if you want to get better at sys design imo
taking the arch classa at my school is not recommended
wait rly
i feel like i learned nothing ||and consequently did bad in the course||
Its cuz our comp arch profs suck and no one recommends lol
yeah because you're more aware of the problems that might come up in your sys arch
especially for software
i personally enjoyed program correctness proofs shit the most this term
even tho i kinda still suck at them
Im gonna end up watching youtube lectures for it then. I do want to learn but i think superficial knowledge should be good enough
i think having a basic knowledge is good
but u dont need to take a course that tortures u for that
Computer architecture can be useful but it hardly ever shows up so 🙃
Yeah thats what im thinking seems like interviews are just lc, os, sys design
if i had choice i would not have taken it
or i would have taken the better equivalent
In my experience it is just really obscure knowledge base.
my course was kinda 🐒
And maybe the occasional TCP/OSI stuff from networks good to know?
wod it be better if practice leetcode timed or no?
also can i use my notes or no?
but networks sounds cool
do them untimed until you get good
30 min just u and documentation
If u cant hack it look up solution and understand it, try to code it urself
ic
i need some motivation
alright
i swear it feels like its too late to find a good internship now
I practice it timed. 45 min to solve the problem. Look at the solution after if not solved.
Nah man there’s still good ones
what if im doing lc ez tho?
Netapp, vmware, lenovo, i think many others
Still do it timed imo
you do LC EZs until you can do them quick
ill do untimed than
Practice it for the typical duration of an interview
Just dont spend 30 min spinning ur wheels
do you guys know if there are any internships for this spring? mmy coop semester starts this spring so im looking...
u recommend me not using my notes right?
it wod make sense not to use it cuz i wont hav access to it on the real thing
you should make notes and try to find the patterns in the questions
once you understand the patterns then the rest is easy
imo for most leetcode questions if you don’t have an idea within 15min you’re better off just going through the discussion
So I don’t think putting yourself on a timer for practicing leetcode is super useful
i agree, you should time yourself when youre doing a mock interview
alright
its more important you understand the problem and how to solve than solving as fast as possible
true true
tbh if you're grinding speed on leetcode, split the practice into 2 parts: do implementation separate from finding the solution
im just practicing
so if you need to practice implementation, read the solutions and then just code it up quick
if you need to practice understanding the problem, think of the solution and then read the sol to verify
hm ok
How long does it typically take to hear back from salesforce after the final interview? Interviewed monday but still havent heard back
Just put in a solid effort, read through your notes try again, and if you still can’t get then go to the discussion tab and learn
Then do a similar question
sigh working part time while doing the grind is gonna be rought
but we got a whole month so lets get it
I was doing the grind while interning last year. legit interviewing in the office
was...interesting
Yeah i just realized i can grad fall 2021 or spring 2022 (which are sam new grad apps) so i may take fewer classes spring 2021 to have time to grind/prep
Your manager sounds nice
^
That means no, cuh
im hip 😦
Ofc you are
i took amazon oa 1 like 2 hrs ago and just got oa 2 😮
Does anyone have resources for ml internship interview questions, have pathai soon
it's prob automated
ye it goes pretty quick
i think i got mine in like 20 mins lol
they only had 5 spots
if i fail amazon for summer i cant reapply for fall right
or like i can but i probably wont go an oa
i believe so
if you fail an interview then yeah, the earliest you can reapply is after 6 months
Anyone gotten an interview with Twitter?
Is research a good enough substitute for a summer internship?
Yes
Could be even better maybe you like research more
Like from what I can see, most places are wither full or require a 6 month cooldown... so in case I can’t figure out a scene for Internship, research would be a good motive right?
Tbh i just don’t wanna sit around in summer if I don’t land an internship, but research is not really my thing
Which is why i was considering that option
Ofc is better than unemployment
If you have the chance take it
That’s what i was thinking hmm I know a professor who’s working on some crypto research, im gonna take that and keep trying for an internship
If I have only taken 1 course toward my MS, is it sketchy to list a 4.0 GPA?
could do GSOC too
Absolute sketchy but it's high risk high reward
If they tell you something say you are sure that you are built different and you'll never get less than 4.0 even in the future.
@abstract wagon eh anecdotally i did research last summer and I'm not getting too much success with getting internships
I'd try to get something with the title SWE intern as much as you can
Speaking of Lyft, how long do they take to reply?
I haven’t heard anything despite applying nearly two months ago
Has anyone had success emailing them?
i was able to move on to phone interview with lyft after cold emailing one of their recruiters
How long ago?
?
@odd kraken is Lyft still hiring interns?
has anyone interviewed w adobe before?
don't roast me but i may have looked up all the c++ answers from linkedin assessment a couple weeks ago and I just passed linkedin's OA
do u think it'll be sus if htye ask me c++ questions and idk them
i don't think any recruiters or employers even care about those linkedin assessments anyway
aight bet
i mean if any company cares it would be linkedin lol
got top 5% on the c++ assessment
but i agree
im a chad
this you?
Does apple expedite their process?
does anyone know if Visa does off season or not?
do you guys think we'll be back to pre-covid life in the fall
cuz I wanna do an offseason internship, but don't wanna miss too much campus time lol
but don't mind taking time off if it aint normal
I definitely feel like fall will be in person
pretty sure fall internships will be in person since it is looking somewhat likely even for summer
My internship is still in person
student programs decides and no one knows how. pretty much random
Any idea about Netflix's ML internship?
what's the online assessment like on codesignal?
codesignal is 4 questions, usually at least 1 string manipulation/array and 1 DP
there are practice assessments you can try on the site
Did anyone here do the codesignal assesment for square and got heads up?
I did one like 1 month ago
but nothing till now
@simple saffron 4 questions 45 minutes? doable?
definitely doable
LC medium?
Any of you guys know of a posting where they send hackerrank instantly when you apply?
i think IBM
yes
you have a link for the posting
because I am finding multiple different openings
any idea which one
i think backend
We need game days back 🙏
lol
just like Illinois vs Wisconsin last year
remember that 😎
wait u to go wisconsin rite lmao
you heard back from Netflix?
Received online assessment today
are you doing your bachelor's?
Masters
If i havent heard from google thats means reject right?
does anyone know what fall internship dates typically are? sept - dec?
@abstract wagon probably
@abstract wagon you'll get a reject mail if you really are, but don't wait
Has anyone taken the Snowflake OA? For java/c++ core engineering
Lmk please and thanks

yeah :( that was a depressing game to watch

Scam?
the poor grammar screams scam to me
Yeah very weird
what is this off of lol
simp
i believe managers can select resumes from a stack, interns aren't able to choose teams
Do any of y’all know any companies that usually reopen applications in spring?
@fast dagger, Please run this command in the #bot_commands channel
what is the website where people post resumes anonymously
That's also what I heard from my SDE 2 friend
Ye
wdym
i just took
maybe diff questions but I TLE'd with o(n)
yes
wait u got all test cases w just o(n)?
wats the best company swag you've ever gotten
back when ghc was in person, i got a drone from a company booth...

F
mage are u 1337mage on neopets? lol
just saw a listing for summer 2022 internship...
YO same
the pwc one?
i have
Wait, is hrt still hiring?
Someone on wso said they hire well into winter
I lowkey want hrt. I didn’t even apply since I was non hypsm, but others here said they do hire non targets. I saw ppl from some local schools on LinkedIn (like Stevens Institute of technology)
Next year is gonna be the year I try hard for quant
And I want to avoid getting blacklisted
i got an oa from them like february last year
Did u hear back afterwards?
well
How long does it take to get the oa?
Yeah I don’t know any c++. But it’s probably something I could pick up
Python is my thing
Anyone know if amazon ny is full?
I guess that reddit post explains why C1 pays interns so much
which reddit post?
whats HRT?
On csmajors, someone saying they want to take C1 internship over Microsoft because of pay (and supposed outsourcing lol)
Hudson River Trading
thanks 💪
Yeah for sure, It's insane that it works especially since the person wants to apply to unicorns and trading firms
42 votes and 17 comments so far on Reddit
I mean if the hiring manager themselves say turnover is high because of outsourcing
I say run the fuck away from msft lol
We obviously don't have the full picture anyways
Do you guys know if Google started recruiting for summer 2021?
That's still only one team, you don't have to work there more than a summer
Yea I guess the consensus is a little short term suffering is worth it for the long term benefits
I can see that
@abstract wagon Was it a security role?
I don't think they are done, anyone else ?
I applied in October with a referral and haven't hear back @potent meadow
If google considers you for step then does that mean they likely won’t move forward w you for SWE
@stuck fulcrum Interesting, thanks for letting me know. Do you know anyone else that tried?
I see, thanks
@potent meadow no
Doesn’t capital one still have pretty good resume value tho? Wouldn’t it still be fine for unicorn/trading recruiting?
Also, does anyone know if faangs are still giving out interview especially msft and g
google is still actively interviewing SWE intern candidates
yeah probably
but no reason to pidgeonhole yourself into banktech when you have another alternative open
yo rohan u still interning at capital one?
Oh word
Is google step done with hiring sophomores?
I’d imagine so tbh
Hi everyone! Does anyone have information on what the Microsoft SWE Intern final round looks like this year (virtual)? For example, what are the formats of the interviews (behavioral or technical), and how many total interviewers/interviews are there?
fuck bezos
nope lol
glad i can join blind in being a c1 hater
where u goin now?
ill dm
what typically are fall and winter internship dates? is fall sept-dec and winter jan-april?
yes
i’m new here, what is the term C1?
capital one
ty
Bruh I think I got 1/7 on the Amazon OA1 since I didn’t manage time well but they still sent me OA2
lol you're fine I know people who made final with 1/7
Do they just send OA2 to anyone regardless of how shit ya could have done in OA1
oa2 &3 weighted a lot more im guessing
oa 3 is just a workplace simulation
@mortal edge you can use our leetcode bot (in #699532227536486451 ) to practice Amazon specific questions
Ok sick thanks!
do the amazon oa 2 intern questions on leetcode discussion
there's like 14 questions total
that you can possibly get
you'll get 2/14 of them
is it worth reneging intuit for google step
So there is a list in leetcode discussion channel?
imo yes
nah i mean actually on leetcode
! problems amazon in #699532227536486451
Ok sick sick thanks everyone
any reason?
i thought this too but people on Reddit fr hype up google that I’m getting massive fomo
honestly, the work at intuit might be more interesting, because STEP interns might be relegated to some open source work, but as a freshman, if you get google on ur resume you'll snowball your way to nice interviews/internships in soph/jr year
i say this:
if you care more for your actual swe experience and you like the prospect of working at intuit, and also not having to do a conversion interview for full time (you have to with google for intern to full time), then you'll probably want to lean intuit. if you care more for resume weight, clout, like google more, want future at google, etc., then google step is going to be your better choice
Yeah having google name is huge
also, you may not have a chance to work at google again; you'll almost always have the opportunity to go to intuit
but as a step intern rohanzo is right, your experience at google might not have the same weight as intuit
as far as what you work on
I’d say do step if you’re a freshie
alright tysm guys. step is so lame tho I feel like the only thing it offers (in terms of work done) is pet projects so I really wanted to work as a real SWE instead
but how tf does step have so much clout
Everyone on reddit simps for goog
remember its ur decision to make tho so don't get too swayed by what we say
but like if i were u
id go goog
okay last stupid question but y’all think in person internships are valid? like u think the vaccine will save them?
no
damn
unless citadel
idk i feel like vaccines might save internships and make them in person
2 summers stuck in my childhood room kinda makes me sick to my stomach
but what can u do
but also yeah i think it might be so late of a decision that it would be hard to get people to be in person
god bless googles slow ass process
by the time my interview goes to HC it’ll be March
nah it does not
i wanna chill in my office, and pet my dogs

ye i guess its not as cool if u live with parents

man I’m gonna have to find a place over summer tho if virtual
I signed a lease on campus for this whole year, and can't go back
so I'm paying thru the nose
for an apt I don't live in until aug
ye that sucks
why did I forget my school offered summer housing
Yeah so it seems that if you work overtime, you get more of a housing stipend as well. They didn't give a # for monthly or weekly or anything reasonable like that for housing
Does anyone know how to contact a google recruiter?
I haven’t been rejected
Just ghosted
anyone do coupang OA? what was the difficulty like?
find a new hobby
I just got a kindle and have been reading like crazy
imagine reading
Really been enjoying it
I read the whole Ahsoka book yesterday it was actually free with prime, and read some of Sense and Sensibility today
only book i been reading is epi
It's really nice to just not look at my phone/computer and relax and read
It's way easier on the eyes it's pretty great
Especially on lower brightness it looks almost just like it's paper
bro u reneged c1 for explore LOL
yeah ig step doesnt offer that
but at the same time
there are people in this server that are former google interns
and didn't get a callback from them this yr
so idk
but its not like you'll return to intuit from fresh->soph year
by that logic you're choosing intuit for a return
and I don't think you should be concerned about a return internship/ft after freshman year
neither of us
its for @obtuse otter
Having google on your resume is fantastic, but he is in a great position regardless
I would do STEP personally in that situation
Yeah I think it's more swe intern to full time that doesn't have as much return offers
don't you get automatic return after you do a certain number of internships
I believe if you do 2 swe internships at Google, you get to skip the conversion interviews the second time
Assuming internship feedback is good
wtf
so if you do step -> swe intern -> swe intern you can convert to fte with no interviews????
pls cite ur sources
hypothetically yes but only 50% return rate is sus
That is my understanding
you should ask the ppl who applied to like 200 internships with a 3% response rate
resume screening is literally the most important thing lol
disagree
in this season
solid disagree
maybe if there wasn't covid and i went to a target school
I got 3 interviews this season and I go to a target fwiw
Getting interviews was easier than passing them pre covid imo
Now both getting and passing them is difficult lol
if you get few interviews its also bad
i would say quantity of interviews is super important bc a decent number of interviews are luck based
the amount of ppl i saw get fucked on amazon bc of rng
(not me)
How can resume not be the most important lol, it’s the first gate u gotta cross
I was in Google host matching for a couple months and connected with some other people in the same process. It's just something I heard over and over again lol.
LOL
@mystic sedge if you're an interview god your experiences will differ from us plebbs
i mean isnt that proof that interviewing isnt rng lol
inboxes are drier this yr
how does one get a jane street interview
wym
I’m curious if fresh/sophs overestimate how many interviews they should be getting. Feel like 90% of employers want juniors
like saying that interviews aren't rng just for keras
because he's 'mega brain' or whatever
my go to analogy is that interviews are like mario kart
yea im sure edwin djikstra could pass 99% of amazon intern screenings
but im not
luck is a factor but people who are better will see better results more consistently
If i need to land a shot on a target, i will pick the shotgun
but that means u can minimize the rng right
i can land fang interviews but not hedge fund one for some reason
“For some reason” bruh lol
yea but there is an rng factor involved
varies from person to person
yeah thats why im asking
Hedge funds are way more selective lol
It’s the tippy top
yeah the more effort you put into your interviewing skill the lower the rng
and rng can get very low
rng component*
i mean there is always an rng factor involved
im not sure what we're even arguing about
leetcode aint everything either
im sure anyone can get to the point where they can pass a good portion of interviews
The worst rng was that one person here who got fb offer and then it got rescinded because recruiter “made a mistake”
yea no ones saying that's not true
that was so awful
just cruel
like 95% of companies that hire swe dont ask questions like that
For people who think reneging is unethical lol suck it, fb rescinds offers
what are you tryna argue
i asked like 20 ppl for amazon what question they got on their final
so on that note
most got num. of islands
is taking bloomberg over msft a grief
no
nah bb is great
I dont disagree but can u elaborate lol
also i will add that some of the people on here are uber smart but lack networking skills
got both my offers from networking connects
i think there's a decent number of companies where the actual interview isn't that hard but getting it is a shot in the dark
like got the interviews through networking
its my loss too bro i need a job
“Networking” is so vague but i feel you. Conferences, making connections, etc
you really want a recruiter with a psych degree to decide whether or not you're good enough for a swe job?
Its funny how mentalities differ because i see it all as one big rng. Embrace the pointlessness, truck on, dont take things personally
ah to elaborate, being good at coffee chats to get referrals, signing up for career fairs at the right places, maintaining relationships
i think seeing it as rng gives u a sense of learned helplessness which discourages u from trying
Those are all good. Except referrals i’ve heard so many conflicting stories here i dont know if theyre so valuable
i think ive gotten so far because i never attribute anything to randomness
which, while i dont disagree that there is some rng component, i think its best to live like
this
even if it is, its pointless to think of things that you cant control
acknowledging rng makes me stay sane when I get rejected from interviews even after being able to solve their problems
it doesnt discourage me from grinding lc hards
Fwiw I think the bigger companies are very inconsistent with how much weight a referral carries, but for a small local company a referral almost guarantees interview
I suppose i embrace it as rng insofar as there’s still binomial probability involved (you can increase your individual odds). But it doesnt HAVE to lead to learned helplessness
big-picture rng
Life is rng
That doesn't mean you shouldn't try
Either that or just adopt nihilism lol
everything has signal and noise
just widen your chances by working hard, applying to many places, etc
I mean yeah it’s a big philosophical question. It’s perfectly valid to embrace the pointlessness /rng of life by saying “if i just work my hardest, i will achieve the best results within the parameters life gave me”
Which imo is a form of blissful ignorance but it can still carry u thru a lifetime lol
resume screening != interviews
i think resume screening has a decent amount of uncontrollable rng
so just mass apply
no we were talking about interviews
or i was
wait what
I think it tangentially veered into interviews lol because
There is a claim that you should only complain about resume screens if you are beast at interviews
As in, “why complain about the more rng component x if u havent even controlled other lesser rng component y”
Yeah i know, it’s a bit of a fallacy
It’s more a mindset that should cheer u up
Idk how but if it works it works
It’s just interesting how this discord which is probably usa/canada’s top 10% still has such a huge volume of resume screens not passing. Not bad, not good, simply interesting
Imagine how it goes for the rest lol
🙂
Lmfao you’re good
ik you're exaggerating, but at that point our industry has utterly and miserably failed to construct a meaningful interview process lol
events/info sessions are kinda OP, wish i had access to more at my no name school, i’m always looking tho
imo LC selects for people who are willing to invest the time in grinding
not the people who are actually good engineers
but I agree with your overall point
aka young people aka no family obligations aka [whatever u wanna insert]
more prep --> less rng overall
because the big companies have monopolies for the most part lmao
if you're talking about like g/fb type of companies
Wait how did “not so good engineers” come up here
If you’re making em money youre good enough
yeah would you rather do leetcode or figure out how many ping pong balls fit in a boeing 747
if it's an LC hard I might as well get the brainteaser lmfao
If i was a freaking interviewer i would gladly give the interviewee in advance a much smaller q bank of potential LC questions
If i could of course, in an ideal world
but easy/med problems are reasonable
true some LC questions are really bad
I think most hards are reasonable too
some are whack though
the FB tagged section has a few gotchas
Agreed on leetcode being the best equitable/scaleable ratio we have at moment
What if the company values the soft skill portion but your interviewer doesnt?
ur testing if the person cares enough about your company to grind codeforces
I guess, idk
like some companies ask segment tree/DP bitmask Qs during onsites
which I dont think really tests anything except exposure to those concepts
Yeah i think they look for a certain type of person/problem solver which makes sense for those few companies. They dont give a shit if u “care enough” or “enjoy” cp just “hey, people who do cp have the chops for this job so lets get em”
Try telling that to my interviewers/recruiters who want to see the passion behind my personal projects lol
its also probably causally directed
like if you're bad at cp you're not going to enjoy it
I feel like that was a reasonable rational before G got big. But suddenly they're asking hards instead of mediums - did people magically become smarter overnight?
Thats why we call it an “arms race” because its the perfect definition
Lol true
Literally on the money
agree
doesnt google india take like 30 interns
theres gotta be like a few million people applying
Overpopulation messes up the lives of young people across the globe it sucks, in korea they’re stressed tf out apparently for similar reasons
Cramming for this one exam and stuff competing for top universities
yeah I can only imagine the college admissions/SAT equivalent in asian countries
yeah I've heard chinese entrance exams are hard as balls
even in india its tough
Lol our struggles get kinda dwarfed in comparison. First world cs kiddo prob:
“Will i make 60k or 100k out of college hmmm”
yeah rightfully so
Most college new grads should be able to make 50k+
lmao my parents always flaming me saying how hard their exams were

Well our struggles don't invalidate our parents' struggles, but yea it's arguably a rougher job market now
oh not at all, they definitely struggled more
but exam-wise it's not a fair comparison
Idk
I feel like it’s just more selective in Asia
like only the TOP students go to college where as a mediocre student in America can go to college
yea that's fair
Ultimately LC is a much clearer path than getting past the resume screen
There's the joke that companies throw out half the stack of resumes because they wouldn't want to hire someone unlucky
While obviously not reality, there's a tremendous amount of luck
I've seen people with solid resumes just straight up not get offers as a junior
Read the 200+ messages above and I definitely agree that the resume screen is by far the hardest part
It seems honestly majority rng to me
Like it’s so fucked up that some random recruiter gets to decide ur fate. The same resume could fair differently with different recruiters
Honestly there doesn’t even seem to be that much of a pattern in who passed the resume screen
A huge reform is needed
And I know leetcode is far from ideal, but a standardized oa really is the only objective way to determines who gets the interview
The questions need to be quite different and emphasize actual skills rather than CP
@abstract wagon just saw ur message. I very much appreciate it. Will message
No subjectivity should play a role. The companies need to develop a completely standardized rubrik where the same result will occur regardless of who’s reviewing u
The resume screen is by far the thing I have the biggest problem with
Like the idea of them throwing out half the resumes or the recruiter not looking at ur resume may not be completely true, but they’re grounded in truth. Many ppl get fucked over in the resume screen for things beyond there control. There are actual people behind these resumes that just want to move forward, but ur no more than a piece of paper to the recruiter. It’s depressing
U can do every thing right and pass 0 resume screens. U may be very capable of passing the interview but u never get a chance
^
Just giving ppl a chance is what matters.
i was just talking to my parents about this actually
The rng has locked many completely deserving and capable ppl out for literally no reason
Getting interviews are so random and based on luck but you can work hard to get one
In what ways?
got rejected from t mobile but i passed resume screen at amazon and google
. you're telling me that im just not capable of working at t mobile but i could work at google or amazon? people will get faang internships but then not pass the resume screen at capital one. rng is ridiculous tbh.
^
maybe its not just RNG. maybe different companies want different things
i’m not saying that RNG isn’t involved but i feel like companies would go for someone whose experience fits what they need ya know
thats understandable i guess. that different companies want different things
idk really the only standardized thing in this process is LC. and even that has elements of rng in terms of your interviewer and what they are expecting
the whole process just sucks ass tbh
like you could get an interviewer that actually cares about your communication and thought process and then you could get an interviewer that just wants you to be an LC whiz
i know its up to the interviewer to determine if you pass or not but like damn that just sucks kind of
I think another factor is location - some of the smaller/less prestigious companies prefer students whose university or hometown is close to their office. They believe that students nearby are more likely to take their offer than those who are further away. This isn't really an issue for FAANGs since they know people will move across the country to work for them
In the middle of recruitment season, u really can’t make any changes to ur resume that will have a drastic impact (if it wasn’t about recruiting, I wouldn’t say this). U can build the best side project in the world but it won’t matter to some random ass recruiter with hollow criteria
yeah but thats why we send out 500+ applications a year right?
I think interviewers need to follow a rubric that specifically outlines what the company is looking for and generates an objective score
Like tik tok has a good resume screening process this year. If u meet the basic qualifications (grad date, etc.), u get the oa and ur resume doesn’t matter anymore. Of course the actual questions are a different story but at least they got the first step correct
Problem is companies are super opaque about what they want.
you’re right. which is sadly why we shouldn’t really place all our hopes on one company
passing the oa doesnt guarantee a chance to interview. There are so many companies that do resume screening after the oa
i think thats just pure evil
it should be application -> offer tbh
Look, if u need an experienced developer with niche knowledge, I get it
But how could u possibly judge college students based on their resume.
leetcode skills ≠ dev skills
if a guy has won 10 hackathons then you can probably assume he’s a decent dev
werent they joking
Honestly, it should be dev skills assessment if u meet the basic criteria -> interview
thats fair
Yeah true my first offer is very near to my university lol
i like the idea of testing dev skills rather than memorizing and applying niche algorithms not even remotely related to your job
Yeah that’s understandavle
Also the other companies I got an interview from has thier office near my school lol
A 5 second screening just isn’t a good way to judge college students. This may sound controversial, but I feel at this stage, absent of a few outliers, ur resume isn’t strongly correlated with ur actual ability to succeed on the job and a lot of things like high school internships are due to privilege. Whether u realize it or not, ~90% of students don’t have access to the opportunities that would allow them to develop a stellar resume
if we were in high school u’d be right
A skills based test, which is something u can study for, that actually correlated with ur ability to perform on the job
but there is so much opportunity to stack ur resume as a CS major
Isnt leetcode a skill based test
Whether it matters to recruiters tho, that’s a different question
it tests core cs problem solving concepts
true!
Thats the biggest problem rn
U gotta start somewhere, but that starting point isn’t clear
projects
I think the issue with these LC style tests is that at some point it'll get to the point where people only know how to complete LC questions but can't actually develop shit
Whether or not projects matter to recruiters is the question. I feel like many recruiters are just soulless and look for things like prior big n experience and target school
I feel like if you can learn how to be really good at leetcode/cp you have the ability to learn how to do development
feel like thats actually happening rn
Leetcode just just test ur ability to perform well on the job
Well, leetcode just tests ur ability to think really
So you're telling me that if I go into an interview, and a company asks me to reverse a linked list, if I do it successfully, that means I'll be a successful engineer?
Solving a problem in a short amount of time just doesn’t seem correlated with ur ability to develop something from the ground up over a longer period of time
No but it can be an indication that you have the ability to learn how to be one
Testing actual skills that directly correlate with the job are much more important
i think OAs should be like “build an API using blah that does blah”
Knowledge of development principles, knowledge of technologies, what ur code looks like
Like a actual project
Yeah but you could just grind leetcode for months and be able to communicate your thought process, I don't think it's a good indication of how well you'll do on the job
yeah but thats countless hours and resources spent on just interviewing
I just don’t think questions that require u to be clever (almost like CP) are fair
Yeah I wouldn't go so far as to say any are unfair
If you could grind leetcode for months, why wouldnt you be able to grind for months to learn how to succeed at your job
Could someone without clever CP insights succeed in developing a system? Possibly. But CP is about as distant from the actual job as u can get
And the time constraint can be really bad
I completely understand leetcode for HFT/Quant interviews
Because it's far different. I could grind for months and be able to reason out when I need to use x data structure or y algorithm, but there's no way to feasibly practice having a client give you specifications for a project or feature and then actually going and developing said project/feature
But the grind shows that there ability is there
Ofc its not directly related but it gives insight on your learning ability
Like maybe ask u to develop a code to perform x task and then test it (write an api for this website)
A take home project is the best way
I don't think take home projects would solve much either
take home projects are so much more time consuming
U should at least get a day to complete whatever assessment.
I think as far as whats available now, LC style interviews are the way to go, but someone will come up with a better way eventually
An hour to solve a leetcode problem just isn’t enough
The time constraint can be extremely stressful
Like the Blackrock oa comes to mind
Yeah but that bit mimics real life
In this industry depending on where you go you have to be able to deal with fast paced environments
In the Blackrock oa u get 3 problems to solve and 96 hours to complete it
Which is fair
And u can use the whole 96 hours
yeah i agree. Everyone wants engineers that are well rounded and can easily adapt
1 hour is just way too stressful
But on the actual job, will u actually be required to solve something in an hour?
The concept of a time constraint just creates a lot of stress
No, you'll have more time, but what you'll actually solve will also be much larger
I think being able to work in stressful conditions & tight time constraints is a good skill to have
The problems were a bit more involved, but they gave u a good amount of time
A good example I think is like this recent Google outage, you think they had engineers sit down and say "Okay team let's get together and figure this out in 96 hours"
Like would giving more time to complete problems be a good solution? Maybe make the problems more involved, but just give a few days?
are you not describing take home projects
Some ppl just don’t work well with very short time constraints, but can still be phenomenal engineers. Like when I’m completing a task, I just need to take a few breaks in order to regain some sanity.
I'm not saying that's not true, but many of these companies are specifically looking for engineers who can work well with very short time constraints
What counts as a very short time constraint?
personally have never met someone great at leetcode/cp that was a shit dev
my friend whos the best dev ik is insane at leetcode too
What about the reverse?
^
It can depend, but like I said before a good example was that recent outage with some Google services, you have a team of engineers who need to get that shit back up ASAP
false positive is more costly than slipping some through the cracks
Like magnitudes more
The problem with false negatives is that ur literally throwing out ppl. Some might have disabilities that make short time constraints a challenge and that must be accounted for
Most companies ask you up front if you have a disability and need accommodations before interviewing though
andres right
U just cannot throw out ppl. Life is not at all a meritocracy.
And shouldn’t be treated as one
transform your hatred of leetcode into motivation to grind for FAANG
That’s illegal
dude i wish they did that to me
No, by law they cannot discriminate on disability
Nah, you can't discriminate based on disability
No, by law they must provide reasonable accommodations
"The ADA only prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. It makes it unlawful to refuse to hire a qualified applicant with a disability because he is disabled or because a reasonable accommodation is required to make it possible for this person to perform essential job functions."
