hmm, when I TA intro CS I find students mostly have trouble with understanding what's going on w/ recursion. I always spend the most time each semester on explaining recursion and going through tons of examples with them.

really? for me it is just implementing it that is tough. getting the array arithmetic down and everything. i don't practice it enough as well but thats what is toughest for me.

It probably depends a lot on the person. Interestingly, I find that people who have done some higher-level math understand recursion much quicker (my guess here is that the principles in induction proofs also apply well for intuiting whether a recursion algo is correct). But I normally find that once people understand it well, implementing isn't too bad... depends on the complexity ofc, but just what I've seen.
