but to prefer the avg go down by 1 point rather than gain 10 yourself, and in general to have this "sabotage mentality", that would mean (3) is actually negatively weighted, to the point where decreasing (3) might outweigh increasing (1) and (2).

mostly agree but besides the recruiting/social stuff, i think the other two main benefits of going to a good school are 1) higher floor and 2) fatter right tail
i feel like for (1) it's a lot easier to, for example, switch around to different paths or get back on your feet after you've had a period of bad time etc if you go to a top school
you can succeed from a ngmi school but you have to be locked in and have a clear plan for what you want to do from day 1, or just be really cracked to the point where school doesnt matter for you
and (2) is that going to a top school improves your chances of a far right tail outcome (Eg being a multibillionaire or nobel prize winner or something) by a small probability which is huge +EV if that's something you're seriously pursuing
