I won't talk about myself here because you guys seem to be biased and have problems with separating personal experiences from stereotypes.

I met this one guy x in my stats course in Turkey. He seemed to be really intelligent with the brain teasers we had and the hard probablilty questions that require a lot of intuition. By the way, this is an extremely prestigious university in the country, and many are olympiad medalists/ High SAT score acheivers. He's doing well academically and doing a double major. Again, I don't know US standards, but this by no means an easy university, and having a 3.9-4.0 GPA is actually impressive. It means you got through first year physics and calculus courses with an A, which is again hard because courses are evaluated on a curve, so only a small percentage of the already competitve class gets an A, and the questions are mostly olympiad level, especially in first year, to weed out incompetent people. The guy I was talking about has zero internships experience. He barely has a proper linkedin profile, mostly antisocial, but I know for a fact, he is a genius. He got almost full marks on exams which I know are really hard in the UNI, and I don't care to prove that for you because I can't. This guy is mostly gonna settle for a low level software job in Turkey because, as I said, he hasn't built himself in the way the world expects him to be. If I were to bet, he'd be an excellent candidate for a quant job, and mostly likely in the top 1% of students studying at IVY Leagues because most people at this university had to stay in the country for reasons, privileged americans, won't understand. I personally had to decline an offer at the highest ranking university in Canada because of visa issues.

I've said multiple times now. We both went to the same university in Turkey - Prestigious in Turkey. He has a high GPA, which I knows says a lot, but people outside the country, will laugh it off like you. His resume would literally be empty if he doesn't bullsh*t, and recruiters, if they think like you, will brush it off immediately, just as you are. Just putting medals at national olympiad competitions would not even impress international recruiters.
