Meaning even if we somehow could make Java GC not run at all, and applying the most optimisation we can have on both language, cpp will still be faster?

I would say no, incorrect/inefficient c++ can be slower than well written java, just because you are closer to the hardware doesn't mean you are going to always be the most efficient, you still need to take advantage of that in the correct ways

With the assumption that the C++ program and Java program are written completely optimally from the programmer’s side — even if you strip the GC from Java, the Java code will compile to bytecode that runs on the JVM, which adds some execution overhead vs C++ which would usually compile directly to machine code.

It’s drastic if you’re operating on a sub microsecond scale

It’s not drastic if you’re doing mid frequency trading

IMC notably uses a lot of Java for writing strategies, but idk how latency sensitive those strategies are

They strip the GC and use an alternative JVM iirc

But yeah for the most part, that’s why HFT shops are looking for good C++ devs for FT roles, bc at that level of latency-sensitivity, you want to squeeze every drop of performance out

For the most part the pricing systems are written in C++ while execution is happening on an FPGA tho

pretty much, i think im giong to just do most popular lc hards but mostly stick with mediums and easy to build a good foundation, lc hards are typically due to fucked edge cases or just strange/unique solutions as opposed to mediums which i feel have fundamental solutions you should know

or hards sometimes take medium solutions and just combine them in a way that is hard to come up with (or require you to look at the problem in a way you would have not previously considered
