you need better things to do with your life
Thank you for your application.
We’re regret to inform you that the team has decided to move on with other candidates. It is a difficult decision for us. While your experience and skills are strong and impressive, the recruiting process is competitive in nature.
We wish you all the success in your future career.
get this from point72, wonder if it is true or just polite words
took me much time to write a cover letter, and now tell me they've moved on with other candidates
anybody heard of this small trading firm called Qube Research & Technologies?
i've heard of them, iirc there used to be a guy here who interned there as well
i've never got past the oa stage despite 100%ing it though
hmmm i see never rlly heard of them before but the recruiter asked me to go on site for an interview lmao
maybe they r expanding
seems like a lot of ppl dont rlly hv good experiences interviewing w them
just automated message
every company gaslights with rejection emails and say similar things sadly
You are now permanently blacklisted from our company
JS doesn't
Hahaha how does someone know whether they are blacklisted or not? 😂
they also go by QRT lol
fail interview= get destroyed by the QRTs
@kindred narwhal interviewed there
their recruiter viewed my linkedin profile right after the oa and then ghosted me for 2 months then rejected
Impressed by your LinkedIn and didn’t know how to react 🥲
Happens to me all the time 🥲
does anyone have any experience working at cubist/p72? how do they compare to the rest of the industry
Went to a p72 recruitment event and the recruiter basically said p72 is data focused while cubist is a general systematic quant firm that uses p72 data
any idea on what ft comp looks like for cubist?
need a little bit of suggestion: (Its gonna be like a reddit post T_T)
I'm an international student (Freshman) studying CS and Math at a small school. I was got an internship which pays $21 an hour and I have to pay for housing and all other things. (IT intern working with Business analytics and GIS)
I've another SWE internship which is unpaid but remote. So, I can live with my uncle w/o paying anything. I was wondering which opportunity to take if I'm planning to follow the Quant trader/SWE path.
for the context: I'll have to pay 14k to my college next year by myself
is this a valid solution to a 3d packing problem? my soln is:
||label each dimension's 6 boxes A,B,C,D,A,B. each 1x1x4 must occupy exactly one A, one B, one C, one D for the dimension it goes 4 into. from this cube, we can see that there are exactly 8 boxes on the edge that involve only A and B (A^3, three A^2Bs, three AB^2s, and one B^3), and 8 boxes at the beginning that do the same. in one dimension we cannot fit any blocks that use AA or BB, which means there are at least 8 blocks that cannot be filled no matter what||
its a bit messier than their given solution (||turn it into 27 2x2x2 chess colored blocks, each piece has to use up 2 black and 2 white boxes, after you fill 26 mini cubes, there is one 2x2x2 left over||)
How did you get invited?
First one unless you know you will learn in the second one, when you’re unpaid they don’t care about you that much
JS swe isnt really like leetcode
its more like implementation w some algorithmic thinking
my friend last year had to build a game
phone is more lc like and honestly can't really clear it by prepping, if you're good you're good
not really esp for final, you have to code fast and clean and correct
can't grind in a short time
Have my first round phone screen for HRT Algo Eng NG, was wondering if anyone has done it/has any tips?
cubist pay way higher than that for fulltime dev positions
i interviewed for a data dev position w them
last year
i did phone interview for the same pos i think the exp differs based on what u write on ur resume
their algo dev is like QR and i had prev projects coding signal and strats and AI stuff so they asked a lot about it in detail
and linux stuff
also some sql and data analytics using pandas
and some leetcode style question but more mathy
i wont say its hard but more of if you know you know
Did you interview for algo eng or algo dev?
I think mine would be more CS based since it’s algo eng. But not too sure
Oh right oops mine was algo dev NG
do you have a ballpark estimate?
algo eng is generally pretty hard LC from what ive heard; i interviewed for core eng and it was more systems type stuff
did they expect in depth knowledge of c++ features?
algo eng, not really but there is a risk if you listed it on your resume
for core eng i didnt get any questions on C++ but for the final round i think he expected me to do it in C++
the only firms that i got c++ trivia questions from were citadel and cubist
hrt was more about OS and some interesting algorithm design questions
oh also core eng vs algo eng only matters after the first interview for the internship
no clue about ng
makes sense. matches my hrt interview experience for algo eng last year
yea i was wondering if the expectations change much for ng
my friend who did ng said it was a bit different
like he had to ssh into a remote machine and got a lot of python trivia
like how python works under the hood
was that for core or algo eng
algo
just any codeforces problems or are there ones more like the JS interview, cuz codeforces is usually heavy on algorithms right
feel like u dont really need to prep for js phone
if a company sends you an interview request and you ignore it even after they follow up do they ban you
wondering if I can email then now with some bullshit like oops the email went in my spam
what are they going to do if you say this lol
there isnt anything they can do
what do they look for then? is the best way to prep to write large programs with super neat and readable code?
best way is to simply be good at writing clean efficient code under pressure with a hard problem
like un-blacklist me?
just have no weaknesses
ez
unironically true
simply be good at coding
who you think js takes
mediocre leetcode monkeys?
no
i want to minmax 😡
in my exp js had pretty algo heavy q's so
i want to be an exceptional lc monkey
might start codeforces after i finish the green book
i know im spreading myself too thin and will likely fail at all my ventures because of it
i feel tho the stuff they ask is p trivial at least from my exp on the algo side until final interview
yeah i meant the final
doesnt make sense to just prepare for like one part of the interview tho
fair enough, but i feel tho that if ur already prepping for normal swe interviews studying algos would already be part of prep so need to sweat for that lol
yeah true
are the algos exceptionally hard beyond stuff like snowflake oa
5d dp
"clean" is kinda vague
where on the clever-pragmatic scale should I be is my biggest question
bro rip any future hrt offers for me then
💀
you
absolute monkey
👻 hrt
@lyric loom
I know range of their pay in Asia but I can't just convert it into USD 😢
they don't standardise their pay internationally
If i'm graduating december 2023, what would u say is best time to start applying for quant new grad? I see that some firms already have open roles lmao and my summer internship haven't even started
I forgot to reply to interview
This means they did another resume screen after usually
I’ve heard good things from there but for QRs and you may need a PhD to apply
Though if you have prior QR experience which matches up closely they’ll maybe disregard it
Yea ik
Silly stuff
I’ve heard PMs at p72 still do a lot of coding which is nice
And they don’t have major worries about insider trading anymore (though tbh like Jump and JS still insider trade, it’s just that they are sexy and good at it)
Anyone know this meme image that shows google as a pretty girl and people wants to give their data to her for better advertising recommendations whereas people call tiktok or Microsoft (who is modeled as an ugly girl) Chinese spyware or stealing their data
edit: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/hello-human-resources
Hello, Human Resources?!, also known as Know the Work Rules, is a comic by Sunny Street lambasting a perceived double standard in women's reactions towards compliments coming from attractive and unattractive males, similar to Be Attractive, Don't Be Unattractive trope. Online, the comic has been parodied, with the phrases said by the characters ...
cubist TC was okay for qd
depends on team pnl
in general similar to 2s
but with a great team the upside could be huge
what do you mean by a great team? Is it like a pod shop where ur under a PM?
thanks for the help
yes
some examples of pod team: cubist, schonfeld, millennium
millenium
are there any other companies that even come close to jane streets logo's coolness
idec about money or prestige or anything but im depressed that i will probably never work for a company that has a logo as good as js
ur trolling me with this one
Explain xkcd is a wiki dedicated to explaining the webcomic xkcd. Go figure.
fucking last panel ass line at the bottom of the logo
optiver
rentech
omfg im dyign
]thats the funniest thing ive ever seen
its so dogshit it loops back to being great
"OOPS the magnet turned off, all the particles ran away"
Why is js logo better than others?
its so CLEAN
three almost circles
mathy but not at the expense of neatness
A lot of them are clean though
basically patrick bateman describing paul allens card
is what i have to say about it
the tasteful offsets, the subtle positioning. oh my god, it even has the golden ratio
Cppcon
the article writer was a gigantic nerd holy shit
who does narrow transcription and includes the glottal stop at the beginning
look at that garbage logo tho
I like point 72
that looks cool
No way you gave aquatic higher than Optiver
the logo is a citadel so imho this is the perfect logo 😂
think of this every time i see the logo
obviously the citadel logo
citadel everything in terms of aesthetics is amazing
honestly js is pretty mid compared to citadel imo for that
LEGOAT
Shaw aesthetic is peak
Enlighten me! I don’t know the meaning 😂
To me it looks like a maze
This is actually really cool
Hahaha now I have to freshen up my illustrator skills to verify this 😂😂
holy shit
3 9 18
thats also very patterny
@lost stratus its even better than i thought
bro how the FUCK does your brain work
this is the way they expect us to solve the monthly puzzles
this one still blows my mind
how many leaps of logic it takes
crazy
Nyc position but base salary is missing 😦 would be really interesting to know how much such a position pays
btw do you know how to solve this one? i feel like dp (mostly brute force though) has N as barely small enough to be solvable if u run the computer for like a day '
i dont understand the solution
||Many of the clues admitted answers that sounded like groups of letters of the alphabet, and in fact observant solvers could notice that these letters helpfully came in alphabetic order! This extra constraint resolved any remaining ambiguities to find the following list of answers:||
what
and
||Here several solvers stopped, deciding the 11 letter long answer “THE ALPHABET” was correct. Sadly there was another layer to this onion! Armed with a list of answers that sound a lot like the alphabet, solvers could focus on the extra sounds that only occurred in our answer list. These were||
||BABY SEED EERIE EFFIGY EIGHT CHAI JAKE AGE ELEMENT OPIE CUE ARRESTEE YOUVE REDOUBLE EWE EXO WISELY||
this bit doesnt make sense either
oh i get this
not this tho
if you ignore the letters they put in bold and read it out it sounds like the alphabet, and if you sound out the bold letters it says bridge troll
if you speak the alphabet theres no B at the start
oh I get it
||BABY -> B + (a, b sounds) ||
|| SEED -> no extra + (c sound, d sound) ||
|| EERIE -> (e sound) + R + (e sound) ||
etc until you get || bridge troll ||
in aybeeseedee
yeah I get it
thats so clever
its insanity
i refuse to read phonetic spellings that dont use the IPA
is "oo" the OO in book? spook?
just use the ipa
ok wikipedia whatever you say
Know a fella who got offered business development at Jane street (non tech role)
The pay not much lower than dev 💀
But the interviews are mostly game theory and puzzles as well
BD and earning more than FANNG NG for reals
It’s like 250K+ yeah
It’s a quantitative trading firm 🙏
The answer is money
yeah that doesnt seem like a great option if ur goal is swe
i know a couple that went into BD JS
they both did cs/related degrees but didnt enjoy coding much
no its not like PM from what i know
its a rotational program i think, so they do a lot of things
interesting
any tips for radix interview
what role?
lmfao not me seeing one of my classmates on the "correct submissions" list ...
any tips for de shaw prop trading intern interview? would really appreciate it <3. Thanks!!
BizDev is a cool role, I got an offer for it but didn’t take it, it’s still technical but you get to interface with the finance a little more. From what I understand JS SWE is very head in the sand coding heavy, BizDev gives you a more Birds Eye view of the firm.
Hi ppl
Anyone have experience with 2Sigma SWE interviews
New-Grad specifically but any at all helps if I can dm ❤️
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Awesome
You got new grad interviews for this year?
@feral topaz Like they started hiring for 2024?
Not yet
Waiting on it
Prepping
There are not known to give out new grad interviews right
what? bro literally just said he has a NG interview at 2S
they def do
Nah I don’t have one yet
But I have intern at sig this summer and have been told that’s enough to basically guarantee ill pass resume screen
absolutely not
I know multiple people who have worked at sig QT and failed resume screens for 2S QR
Whoever told you this is incorrect
2s qr resume screen is mainly just school from what ive seen
also gpa
I honestly wish I did not royally detour my ug
i like ur name
internal referral?
I got a quantitative investment superday at Goldman Sachs. Are there any tips for this? The initial screening was quite technical so I am not sure if this round will also be very technical/math based
for what role/start date outta curiosity?
Quantitative Investment Summer Analyst start date summer 2024
I mean tbf tho I don’t think u need insane college to get interview as long as it’s somewhat decent
ours is basically the threshold for the school checkmark, maybe a little less “prestigious” ones too ig
damn when did u apply, sounds like a fast turnaround
That’s def fair, either way I think quant in general isn’t like banking where school is a lot more important
I feel like it’s a boost or it’s not at all
No in between
Yeah
I do think going to like mit or Stanford might help a lot, but at the same time the ppl there are way more smarter than ppl at most schools so it’s self selecting
yo
@lyric loom
I think it’s mostly talent diff for top schools I go to relatively strong cs school and the talent diff between average student at my school vs some place like mit or Stanford is p big imo
How’s brown not good?
recruiting is extremely random tho lol
brown is def good their math is on stronger side, and even if it’s less traders it’s prob from other factors such as maybe lack of interest and also maybe much smaller cs and math dept compared to other schools
Yeah that’s not so good, cuz then u don’t have connections or people in the industry to reach out to
Less alumni is generally a bad thing
UIUC or Cal or CMU >> Brown for quant in my mind
At those top schools there’s like a pipeline to quant: lots of people have got it so you can follow what they did or go to their recruiting events
he's right
the usefulness of knowing other people in quant is not insignificant
Not as strong lol
It’s funny to suggest it is
Also most people here are interns or LARPers
Yeah like if you’re a top performer fulltime grinding ur not gonna spend ur free time when u cool off talking to 18yr olds
I only know one dude like that
We’re too good for Adchari
The difference isn’t that big imo, for trading you’ll get interviews if you’re good, for SWE it’s RNG and having alumni is not that useful unless it’s like UIUC to jump
My opinion tho
And I feel like brown quality of life makes it a better choice overall
It is rng and that’s why alumni who know your curriculum is legit is helpful
QoL for quant intended
I think Brown is a great school for pre-med and like if ur goal is swe
True
what happened to chae
Hey guys, it's the busy time of the year. I know most of you have internships and will be busy over the summer but if you are graduating December 2023 or May 2024 now is the time to explore your options. Firms are interviewing incoming seniors for the next cycle. Most people that do well will receive a return offer and most firms will give you an expiration date to accept the offer. Don't put yourself in a situation that you don't explore your options because of that, they put the an expiration so you don't have time to explore the market. This is your first career opportunity, you have to do your due diligence and make sure you are going into the best possible situations. If you do receive a return offer it's a good thing, leverage that to find the best possible opportunity.
Happy to help make proper introductions. Feel free to reach out.
(allegeldy) linkedin got doxxed and people saw he was larping so he left
Thanks for the heads up!
that's why i larp on my linkedin as well
idk if it's true
that's just the legend
@rose holly why did you unfriend me 😢
what does larper mean outof the loop lol
bro got the chess emojis 💀
bro i don't understand why people care so much
idk why people care about this so much. i really just wanted to share my opinions
no shot bro
im just trolling
i would never
hrt + chae collab
Damn that’s actual person on discord? I thought ur username was cuz u were twice Stan or something

i think easiest way to solve this is for both of u to go outside rn
When do you start HRT?
You got Jane Street, citadel, and HRT offer tho
Wait ur not even chaewon
Ur minju
🤨
Minju better than Chaewon anyways
they own you nothing lol
no one has any reason to dox themselve
in their case, i actually highly rec not doxing themselves as they'd get hella simp DMs
"how do i get into XYZ"
yo dawg chill it's not that deep
just dont engage
i didnt mean much by my comment, just that chae has had multiple previous quant roles, and will also be at a firm this summer which is more quant experience than either @primal shell or myself
and ive met chae irl lol
el frog

is https://openquant.co/process-tracking legit?
or mainly troll data since too early?
lmfao 4 rentech intern offers
js interviewed people early from an event for traders maybe thats real
but probs fake if it doesnt make you verify
Wait until you hear about BP trading
who tf keeps on pinging me then deleting
the ping was probs saying i verified chae and that's enough, no idea why they deleted ?
yo
did you actually get belvederie or whatever and schonfeld

how do you do fellow smart beings
bro can anyone understand this paper
Have you taken k theory
I have not
no
does this have any applications in manifold learning/signal processing
what are layman's terms on what he is proving in the paper 😭
Anyone applying for jane street SWE internship fall?
Is it true that quant firms generally prefer to give return offers to interns rather than recruit for new grad roles, or is it something that really depends on the company?
Isnt every company like that lol
If your a good intern you have a much higher shot getting a return offer / job at the company
Thats just how it works everywhere
P sure most part thats why spend sm moneys on intern
does nobody know
you should take algebraic geometry first
for qt especially, your first 3 months - 1.5 years depending on the company is just school
so if you've already had 3 months of school as an intern, that's nice
so its easier to go from trading intern -> new qt than go straight to new grad as a trader?
Has anyone gone through the process for swe at ctc?
It’s easier to get any job if you’re already an intern there that’s kinda common sense
It’s the whole point of an internship
in this economy solo targeting quant is literally the worst idea
even in a good economy solo targeting quant is also literally worst idea
Solo target
Be brave
Don’t listen to Krishna you don’t need that negativity
(Jk)
and even in a good economy solo targetting big tech is a bad idea
i think it's important to set your sights low and u r guaranteed to get something

id say it's safe to solo target quant if you're already a quant
for targeting quant do you mean qt/qr or including tech positions in quant
qt/qr totally rng
Pmuch
PhD > hft
Bro I love him
Sorry you had to find out like this
Its cool
No
I'm acc gonna do ml theory
That's cool
i have, feel free to pm
hai
it might been cuz of exp, idk how ur resume looks like
but at least for me the no of responses my soph yr vs junior yr was a lot lower than junior yr since i didnt really have any good internships
@lyric loom
@edgy phoenix
whats up
2023?
Ik a putnam top 200 who has prior quant experience that didn’t get past a bunch of quant resume screens this year 💀
Maybe the resume did not reflect being cracked. Some people struggle to reflect their crackness on CVs
😌
honestly we need to simplify resumes
-2024 grad at X uni
-putnam 2021 top 200
-interned at Y
size 12 font, leave the rest of the page blank
wtf for 2024 summer? or fall/spring or ng?
Any body know if Jane street is looking for a risk-taking or conservative mindset in the final round interview
I did for swe ft but i didn't have an oa
Positive ev and risk averse
If you’re not WSB personified you get sent home
wondering as well
Given a choice between FANNG level tech companies and hedge funds (with similar TC between the two), what would you guys choose for the long run
I feel like tho hedge funds can defo pay higher but after a certain point TC won't matter as much (whether you are earning 500k a year or 700k a year etc) unless you are chasing the material lifestyle
depends on the companies, the team you're joining, the work you're doing, the location of the company, etc
Lets say you are working on the same tech stack, doing backend or whatever that interest you in both companies, in the same location with approximately similar pay and benefits
Tech companies always say that oh you can choose between independent contributor or go the management route and I feel like in hedge funds it's harder for you to pivot in a similar manner because of how flat they tend to be so most ppl end up doing the QR/QT/QD for their entire time there
And the long tenure
if everything is the same, then of course go with better wlb role, but that's a moot point because there will be difference of the work you're doing
Hedge funds. Cash bonus comp > RSU
anyone interviewed with a mid frequency team called kepl at cubist
Anyone interviewed with HAP Capital?
yes seems so
\
very cool problem, if you dont have the method to solve in your tool box then its impossible though
Just inclusion exclusion?
is the answer 1/120? not that simple prob
ye
Seems rel trivial isn’t it just bashing out the formula lol
ye
never seen it in action before tho so i liked it
what's pie
besides the food and the extinct language that is the precursor to almost all european, middle eastern, and indian languagrs
ah ok
that is my second favorite pie now
it's just a counting technique that's useful for finding intersection of sets
it is, it comes up in combinatorics a lot
combinatorics concepts r kinda weird in the sense that stuff like double counting and pie r relatively intuitive but actually applying them for proof can be p aids sometimes
none of u will make it
gib up
and even if u have already made it
…..
no you haven’t
I've always been an admirer of your inspirational words @rose holly

@rose holly

I will be there
I will be there
I will be there
r u guys impostors or did u acc get invites
i have invite

yea im coming
lol whats the logo on the right
anyone know anything about G-Research?
hiring manager from there reached out but they seem super new
i've heard about it but not too sure what they do
their only US office is in dallas which kinda sucks
it’s a London based firm I think
G research are funny, they’re known for cutting interviews short if you’re not doing well enough

Had similar thing happen at valk, the dude would make fun of me for going to state school and then cut it off after 15 min
I think @opaque sable means that if you arent performing well enough in the interview they stop. That what you experienced with valk is worse 😅
Lmfao
what did he even say lmao
he straight up told me georgia tech isn't a good school and also said i was awful at c++ because i messed up a question related to multi threading
gaytech isnt a state school
id like to see him interview a umass amherst lol
(also a good school, but gatech is like a target school )
lol is valk even good enough to be trashing a school like gtech
why tf did they even come to the career fair then
all-time level hating :(
It’s just that one dude Ik a lot of people there who went to state schools
Their OA was easy imo unless you’re not talking about QR?
It was like “have you taken an ML class”
Ahh
didn't this dude flee to china, then **voluntarily went back to the UK
When British police requested his extradition to the U.K. to face criminal charges, he agreed to go willingly.
not a smart move
Bruh😭
Is it possible to get invite without handshake or target school

anyone going to the icpc NAC?
Yea GR and maven are the two main ones based in london
But GR has a more laid back culture
But the mix of people there are.......more questionable
Why that?
Most of the ppl I know who interviewed with them complaint about the interviewers being v rude or disrespectful
Tho it's a small sample but still they are not thatttt big so it still says something
Isn’t js also like that
dunno
I think a decent amount of places do that
pretty sure that GR is the highest paying london firm for researchers
so there is that
has anyone done deshaw swe new grad pipeline?
tiring process
you got the interviews?
wait this early?
Is this for 2024 new grads?
For swe?
that is true
Or for trader
whose ready for the celtics funeral tn
Playoff dropper
🫢
like i doubt they have more Yale than Cal
5 rings does. its all about knowing the right people
u just gotta know someone who can put u in the pipeline
i know ppl at 5r who dont have those
but 5r does seem to be more inclined to take women tho
naw fr
just get a referral from someone who worked there
you lohst
slide into william lin's dm
im never watching nba again if the heat throw
yo
yo
bruh
I just noticed this on my LI
It works?
Bro sees red 💀
Anyone wanna start a quant firm for Sports Betting
u wanna start a quant firm for DN
real talk, sport betting aint profitable
ur almost always bound to get banned after a couple of months
its dogwater
Im eating cosmic brownies rn
how about u eat some dn
I can almost confirm
It’s top 3 for sure
for summer 2024 or winter?
ah ok, yeah I can agree on that too
what's 5r, fiverr?
it’s super secret stuff
anyone recently in SIG quant interviews? no idea what they gonna ask
thx for info
any idea will there be game theory problems? never learned this before
that make sense
gonna try to learn this within 24hrs
is this like phone round?
i went thru entire process up to final my soph yr and its mostly game theory and expected values
i think having some knowledge of bayesian prob also helps a lot
bane
its a phone round with quant after two rounds with hr (1 technical and 1 bq)
forgot most of my knowledge from math courses so pretty nervous now lol
what's bq?
short for behavior questions
oh
are summer 2024 open yet
its may
ok ya, i forget what exact since it was 2 yrs ago but it was mostly ev and game theory
if u do well in this one u should move on to the final
the questions are bit easier than green book so if u can do that u should be fine
might be from something like sig discovery day
nah its full time for recent grad
like...for next month??
lol idk
they mentioned linear algebra and calculus which is like pre-history stuff for me
calc is in green book
for aug i guess
zamn
i was terrified that ppl are already mid rounds for 2024
godspeed
may you get an offer at 1 sigma
i mean ik someone who is mid round for sig that is undergrad
not quite sure
i thought they asked my preference but idk the exact position
thx
working on it
ur gonna get that 400k new grad
what if he misclicked a euro office when applying and he gets that 40k new grad
what's europe?
a desolate wasteland of poverty and overpriced booze
its pretty ad hoc
you don’t need like actual theory
but should know what a nash equilibrium is
LMAOO
August is when most open
tyty
bruh i just had the worst dream
30 green book questions for an hour long exam. they were all like half a page of words
and the guy next to me kept trying to give me the answers
Is it possible to get into quant firms like jane street and hrt if I go to Oregon state? For reference, I'm currently interning at nvidia and have google summer of code and a major league hacking fellowship on my resume, I also have a 4.0
Worried bc I don't go to a target
discovery day?
yeah
Possible unlikely
Get referral
Another big n would prob be enough or yeah referral
Does emailing recruiters and reaching out and all actually help?
r u allowed to visit other firms
family connection
probably not
only way it makes sense
how would a university of nevada las vegas student be at goldman sachs
same thing
yeah the connection there not citadel
anyways
I mean how else
why denial
I think most oregon state people don't even know what the market is
nothing wrong with being "nepo'd" in, I'd love to be "nepo'd" in
Is this guy a troll
actually have no idea for quant, i do know some quant companies where u can bring +1s - but to parties/special days
While many factors went into this determination, in this instance the results of your Hackerrank test were the main determinant.
wtf
I got perfect on the test cases
tibra
I don't think so
or maybe some TLE on server hidden cases? at least hackerrank said they were perfect
Unlikely
so why
should have done the ib route man this blows
I'm scoring perfect hackerranks and not even getting back first screen
I feel like this might have been worded like shit
And it was something else

Summer 2024?
Which company is this?
You still have to be cracked enough to pass the interview and get it. They don’t give offers to randoms, and you don’t have anything to backup your claim as well
FT
agreed
bruh i rmb at one pt u literally said quant is not for u
I’m referring to tramski
i dont understand the bottom system of equations
why do we only multiply out one of the Ps, but the other one gets to be "n-2/365" or "n-1/365"?
what do you mean 'multiply one of the Ps' they simplify the expressions P(n) > P(n-1) and P(n) > P(n+1) after they plug in what they got above
they have an equation with many multiplications ending in n-1/365 > JUST n-2/365
why is it not another large equation on the right?
365 multiplied down to n-2/365
oh its like telescoping and they simplified down to just 1 or 2 terms on each side?
thanks
im having trouble decreasing i using the original formula
since any time i plug in the value of P_i i will get P_(i+1)
i cant get a recurrence relation that is solely in terms of smaller values of i
cant you just write P(i) as some multiple of P(i-1)
not sure how because there is the pesky P(i+1) term
where though. at what point do you need to know the guy behind you
the rest is supposed to follow from this formula
how does this follow from the previous message
P_i+1 - P_i = 1/p(P_i - qP_i-1) - P_i = ((1-p)P_i - qP_i-1)/p = (qP_i - qP_i-1)/p
ah, i didnt see the skipped step here
P_i+1 = (1/p)(P_i - qP_i-1)
now i do though
thanks
jeez they skipped like 10 steps
the actual algebra/computation isn't that important mainly that you're reducing the recursion to a geometric one
its important for me to follow it though
a lot of this computation is unnecessary
compare the last terms of P(n+1) to P(n)
really to determine whether something is bigger than the other is how does (n-1)/365 compare to (365-(n-1))/365 * n/365
you can infer from here that you're probably looking for the square root of 365, which lies between 19 and 20
then you just check which one matches the criteria
fire
ok but if u just change the decision to include a few parameters isnt that the nuts
like if ur on wall street arent you shaking
missing nvidia
yo im not that great at cpp, but do you have any milestone in mind when u would consider some1 to be 'good' at cpp?
if you can quickly translate an idea to code in c++ id say thats a good sign
so true bestie
Honestly ChatGPT does a decent job creating PineScripts for TradingView
How to get rich? Use ChatGPT to create a bunch of bogus PineScripts that look cool and sell it on TikTok
holy gg
😭
ok now when I get real bx offer I am obligated to post full text
that was p funny tho when I first saw it
had to post - sorry

I interviewed for qr
is the dress code for qd j business casual
i am not sure where the formula to calculate 23/144 or the method to draw/shade the square comes from
y=mx+b
it’s just y=x but +- 5 mins
oh lmao this is 7th grade math
solve the abs value by setting x-y<=5 and x-y>= -5
and shade LOL
i swear quant stuff gets harder the farther its been since high school
is this a real quant interview question?
its from the green book
Tbf I feel like a lot of times question r ez but thought process and explanation is more important
No one is good at cpp and imo anyone who says they are is lying
ye, for a lot of these my goto is getting hard carried by subconscious "this idea should work"
not very good plan for trying to appear hireable
if someone watches cppcon videos in their free time thats pretty damn close though
those ppl built different
thats the ez part for me, if i actually know what im doing i can explain the solution with flying color
i mean the point isn’t really to test for specific knowledge and just general thinking ability
I do this and I would not say I’m good at C++
it works as a viable strategy if your intuition is good enough and you have confidence in it
there arent super good shortcuts for getting that kind of insight though, just need to do a lot of problems
if you do a couple hundred problems from putnam in beyond you'd be in pretty good shape for that
would take a few months
an alternative strategy that doesnt involve calculating area uses inclusion exclusion. try to see how
im trying to stray away from pure intuition and replace it with "i feel like this tool works here"
since atm if i just try to solve on my own i wont have a clue why the answer is riggt or wrong
whats the difference
also how long do you spend on problems before you look at the solution
these two coincide for me. to be able to have the sense of a tool working on a novel problem, you should have faith rooted from such a tool working in the past, that faith grounded in your own experience and breakthroughs
"i have no clue how to explain it but if i add these values together i think i get the right answer" vs " this seems like the time to use induction, so i will try it"
latter is very neat thought process, former is complete chaos
rarely do i encounter the former
im trying to never have the former happen
often i see sorts of "grokking" in the sense of learning the finite number of tactics in a vacuum or by watching it demonstrated, as a viable technique for learning cs problem solving
intuition is more important
i dont think it works well for math problems
you should try to spend like at least half an hour
i am person who only does math
why not? because instead of having a finite set of 20 techniques, in math you still have a finite set but theres 2000 of them
and it isnt really practical to memorize them
it also doesnt make as much sense to make clear distinctions between them a lot of the time
yeah i mean just memorizing techniques is not that useful
at the level of quant interviews anyway if you have the correct fundamental you can invent said technique on the spot
ye
there is room for both. you need not sacrifice one for the other
doing rough work, trying small cases, is a pretty universally good strat for starting any problem
maybe after trying 3 or 4 cases, you can be in the position to conjecture an induction hypothesis
yeye tinker to n=3-5ish is super good strat
but blind Intuition is all or nothing so its rly scary for me to use
what does that mean
my insane ramblings on the page dont work? im boned
ok when i say intuition i don't really mean guessing
what does blind intuition mean. what does it mean to be all or nothing
like
just trying without any strategies ive formally learned
is blind intuition for me
u never answered the question btw on "how much time do you spend on a problem before looking at the solution"
this kinda varies
like if you are still coming up with real thoughts
then you can spend hours and its fine
but if you can't think of anything
pick a different problem
the problem is either too hard for you, or you miss some prerequisite knowledge that you aren't expected to come up with on the spot
I think if u really don’t know I think it’s fine to look at solution
And maybe look at question that’s bit easier and uses similar approach
if it's specifically for like quant interview problems i feel like it's fine to look after 30 minutes
idrk where people would get more of those type of practice problems though
thats not a number
I’d prob look at it after like 20 minutes of being stuck and having no idea what to do
i wasnt positing any stance on whether looking at solutions at all is ok
I mean I think there is no exact time tbh cuz it varies on person
yeah
i still dont understand why people are answering for him though
are u asking me?
usually vetween 5 mins and an hour depending on if im certain I am lacking a technique to solve it or if i think i have a few ideas that might take a while
when i look at soln ill try to solve on my own after reading a few lines
5 mins as a lower end is quite small. 30 mins is a good amount.
if you feel bottlenecked by this approach by virtue of not being able to see enough problems, you can try looking at 10 problems at once and see if you can make any progress on any of them
thats what i do
i dont look at the answers at all doing this though, i suppose for better or for worse. i think if i did look at the answers i would run out of questions a lot quicker
its very very low end, rarely do 5
its more of "id rather use this problem as an example and learn from it"
like how textbooks have solved solns mid chapter and then actual hw probs at the end of chapter
where are you finding these problems? after green book i have no idea what to do next
i guess i have personal disagreements with that approach. it is often the case that some problems are more demonstrative of a unique insight than others
and i dont want to shoot myself in the foot by revealing the answer prematurely
random question but
i can post some later
what are good ways to add more experience to resume other than internships/tutoring/taships/clubs
actually
also research
projects that you have an emotional stake in
i alr got like 4 projects lol
do u care about any of them
that do have an emotional stake
ok nice
at the very least i care about 1/3rd of them lol
however i had an emotional stake in the rest of them
you can do open source stuff
nah i don't want more projects lol
or solve some open problems. depending on what kinda stuff you're looking for
(i am planning on doing open source anyways)
theres a lot of open problems that are pretty easy to solve
just need to find the low hanging fruit
if you already have all the other stuff you listed, i dont really see the need for more
would just be cluttered
but yea just depends on what you want to do and what you want to emphasize
ideally just continue whatever you like doin
hmmt is like
significantly overkill
schoolbook probability textbooks is probably fine
omo sounds made up
onternational mathematics olympiad
they sound more like 0% interest rate startup names LMFAO
farml is new to me
i guess it's recently made / small
it sounds like budget arml
the rest are of these are small
math prize?
yeah their contests are available
i thought they did more
has anybody here taken and understand k-theory
has anyone here taken and understand etale cohomology?
what's up?
if anyone wants to try their hand, im busy for the next 2-3 weeks. maybe some people here would be interested in trying since its nice mathy-cs
https://mathoverflow.net/questions/444916/quickly-determining-if-a-matrix-has-any-psd-completion heres the math overflow post
so far its unclear whether these problems are hard, from brief literature reviews it seems it simply hasnt been worked on much
so they might be easy / open by virtue of no one having tried for long enough
@rose holly easy way into openai if ur interested
“Tried for long enough” => 100 years later
more like a month. idk i dont have much intuition on algorithmic techniques, its hard for me to gauge difficulty here. i guess i would lean towards proving hardness being on the easier end (if that is the resolution)
im goin to a math conference tomorrow, ill see what people over there think about it
idk i would not overestimate the difficulty of "unsolved problems" in general, just cuz no ones done it before doesnt mean its hard to do
whats up
And u call me a nerd
Is the blackrock OA automated for swe intern? I just got it after a week
Yes
is it the one u get after filling out the app?
DP DP DP DP DP
PREPROCESS ALL POSSIBLE LINE SEGMENTS IN N^2 TIME
actually this does not look like you used thast
u should solve with dp
there is a set cost for adding a new line segment to avoid overfitting
and a value applied to how accurate the total r^2 is
thinking of making a project to get a quant internship. Any ideas/suggestions?
I was thinking of putting a bunch of stock data into a dataframe, calculating the greeks, Testing a couple of ML models, and then showing the results with a custom backtest algorithm
Does that sound unrealistc/unhelpful? Any tips?
heh kinda new to qaunt.....whats a QR?
the ML models I would b able to explain cuz I just finished my ML class but the finance part I def would b confused. Wld it still b too ambitous?
rip
do u have any other suggestions?
my resume's kinda dry so I was hoping to put a finance related project on there
W chae giving advice
ohhh ok so just do an old competition to showcase some ML? I wouldn't need to make it Finance related?
ok, i'll try that out.
thnx
any tips on courses to get better at quant?
are u looking for dev or trading?
probably trading, maybe research
afaik, dev is just swe but extremely low level, which im not intersted in
i wouldnt take classes jsut for quant but imo, some useful classes in general r linear, diff eq, combinatorics, numerical methods, pde, and just algo classes in general
cit people say to take lin alg, real anal, and prob theory for trading interviews
in work or in interviews?
1, 1.01, 1.001, 1.0001, ...
hmm no but sequences and convergence can be a real topic
but def nothing that requires actual math like constructing the reals
isn't that just calculus
What’s the most use math topic/thing in your work?
basic stats, nothing fancy in hfts
dk never had calculus, just real analysis
Pride month. So pretty much every company changes their logo to feature the rainbow colors
So all the fancy brain teasers for quant research interviews you hear of are basically the equivalent to leetcode (aka not representative for the actual job)?
Can’t remember their last years logo 🥹
Why? 😅
Not on cnbcs list 🤔
indeed man 😂
Do I hear “free tower backpacks”????
No more 😦 I’m giving mine to Minju
If he/she doesn’t want it I am happy to take it 😂
Free stuff is always the best
if he doesnt then sure
but he does
well there was an event but it was only for my school
No
Two sigma is top wym

How do I get mlai at quant
BW recruits from linkedin???!?
what's bw tc
ru 24 or 25
gpa doesnt mean much as long as it's not low
i dont think anyone actually converts though
i think youre fine
how would they?
like it's impossible to know unless you take the mean of the applicants from each school but even that is just a sample statistic
i think he's sating rly cracked people will minmax and go all in on rsh
and if ur doing research 24/7
then youll neglect school
not cuz u cant do it just cuz ur busy
A+ in grad class and TAing for large ug classes is how i got my research lol
that was oddly specific
ive heard of that working
but im too lazy to
ive only been approached by others

why not both

alexandr wang
how did he sell out
yea idt they do much labelling now

hypsm -> faang is kinda rope tbh
yea but imagine grinding for the best opportunities since 6th grade and now you got a job that 500k other people have
