Heya, I started a thread to make it easier to follow 🙂

That loops is something a lot of creatives go through. It's as if company owners forget what it's like to be starting out and make it difficult for people to get started.

With the more general questions they're asking you, do you ever work on your answers after the interview so you'll have a stronger answer next time?

And would it be useful to reach out to people in the industry in the Netherlands that might be able to give you more specific direction?

To be honest soms questions are not easy to answer or find a better answer later. Mostly because I don't have the experience to step on. That is something I'm looking to improve on.
As for reaching out to people here, I am currently in the princess of that as well. Planning talks with mentors, collaboration with other professions, and still applying and having interviews.

#

But in the end, I'll still be "faking it", and selling my self as a 4year experience designer, although I technically haven't worked as a digital designer yet in an office. Just physical design and personal digital projects. I even tried to find an internship but they only take registered students

Are you being up front about not having studio experience? If people are hiring they can generally tell pretty quickly if someone has the experience or not. Trying to hide it can come across as pretty sly, just being honest is generally a better strategy

@floral inlet this was what I was going to add for your "I usually do this"

#

this is from a recruiter

#

give actual examples not what you would do

So if you don't have studio experience, do you have other experiences you pull from to show examples of the different situations?

Exactly

I have studio experience, and from group projects as practice, and hackathons, and personal projects. Plus volunteer experience in an NGO. And most questions I'm being asked, I'm answering honestly. Meaning that, if they ask how I would deal with a specific situation.. even if I haven't, I give an answer. I don't lie on my interviews, or CV even.

I've seen that before. A company even sent it to me before interviewing me to tell me what they expect from my answers. I always mention situations of course. As much as I can.

#

It's just that, my experience is from very specific places, not always relatable with where I'm applying.

its sometimes how you showcase it

#

and word it

#

its hard but not 100% impossible

I think this is my main issue now. Showcasing work, wording experiences. I'm working on it as I go, since interviews keep coming in.

#

I'm also waiting for some Mentor-talks from ADPlist. To get some feedback on my application files, and assignments I have delivered so far.

Working on is as you go is perfect, that's what we're all doing! You're working on your story telling, that's helpful for communicating ideas to clients, to your team as well as interviews and case studies 🙂

I have a question, regarding my interviews.. I always get a bit stuck, when they ask me if I have any questions. Sometimes I ask basic stuff, but other times they have already explained so much already that I'm empty. What would be a good set of questions asking a recruiter (first), and then someone from the design team?

raven laurel

That question isn't a test, you don't have to ask something. If you genuinely have had all your questions answered it's okay to say that.

If you want it, a technique for finding questions is to list everything you want from a job from salary and working conditions to learning, progression and company culture. Then research a company you apply to as thoroughly as you can to see how they match to your ideal.

This will spark some questions because you'll know what you want to find so your research will be more in depth than a quick overview of their website

That's a good way to approach it, thank you. Today i tested some question I found online.. meaningful questions of course, but wouldn't come natural to me. and the recruiter was impressed.

Sick! Good work 😄 all this is great practice!

Ok last question/issue. Regarding my portfolio. Does anyone have a good source I could check for a nice project & portfolio structure? I think I overcomplicated mine.

I’ve never lied about my experience either and you shouldn’t have to

#

But just make sure when you’re describing it it’s not in studio design terminology if you want to go into UX
