#

That’s still over a third of my monthly salary, tho.

#

I hear you don’t want to spend more than that third.

lunar crest
#

up down... that can go up to about 5500 a month

grand kayak
#

Holy!

lunar crest
#

but yeah thats the rule of thumb for mortgage as well

#

yeah

grand kayak
#

I only make 30k/yr…

lunar crest
#

i make 76k a year... but idk how much that can go up lol

grand kayak
#

Well, in USD.

lunar crest
#

ah ok

#

then...

#

50kish

#

LOL

grand kayak
#

I was thinking I’d be thrilled with anything above 40 or 50. Haha

lunar crest
#

in Canada this salary is not abd at all

grand kayak
#

Guess I gotta aim higher XD

winter fulcrum
#

30K euro for NL is normal too

#

Above 50K you'll pay 50% tax

grand kayak
#

30k euro is a LOT of USD, tho

#

Oh, not as many as I thought

lunar crest
#

there was that article I shared yesterday but yeah pretty much Van and Toronto is like

#

one of the worst not livable places

grand kayak
winter fulcrum
#

I'm in luck though

#

Pay 300 a month for 50sqmt

grand kayak
#

Sheesh. I pay almost 3x that for less than half the space. xD

lunar crest
#

u dont pay tax on the total 50%

grand kayak
lunar crest
#

u pay on the part thats over that bracket

#

a lot of ppl have that misconception with taxes

grand kayak
#

Took me a while to get the bracket thing before because some people tried to explain that they were against taxes by saying it was 30% of all your income yadayada

lunar crest
#

yeah those ppl are out to lunch and dont get taxes

grand kayak
#

Japan is also on a bracket system. And we pay insurance and such based on previous year’s income.

lunar crest
#

i think taxes are stupid in the sense of how theyre spent efficiently by the gov

#

but thats a different story XD

grand kayak
#

(My bills went down this year because COVID-19 cut my salary last year…)

winter fulcrum
#

Yeah would be 36k or so

#

Of the 50k

grand kayak
#

??

#

That’s over 50%…

grand kayak
#

Ugh, all the places I have considered living have terrible costs of living. What’s a poor person to do? xD

lunar crest
clear ferry
#

I wanted to pop in and say 50k USD would be paycheck to paycheck in cities like SF, LA, NYC but reasonable in cities like Louisville, KY

lunar crest
#

and or share appartments like eg get a 2bed 2 bath and convert the den to another bedroom

grand kayak
clear ferry
#

yeah you’d definitely have to share apartments

lunar crest
#

theres regional offices of some big companies

hoary crater
#

same in winnipeg LOL

clear ferry
#

define good?

grand kayak
#

Ugh, don’t wanna ever deal with roommates again. Maybe I will stay in Tokyo after all.

hoary crater
#

like $700/month in a decent place close to uni

lunar crest
#

its part of the reason of high living costs in big cities

#

the jobs are there

hoary crater
#

with tech jobs you can also work remote tho

grand kayak
winter fulcrum
#

Depends

hoary crater
#

the pay cut you take from working remote is less than what you save living in a cheaper place

clear ferry
#

like good growth, high paying? A lot of companies are going remote now (my internship place and current workplace offer remote), so they’re getting paid maybe a little less but still insanely above the median in their LCOL areas

winter fulcrum
#

Many still don't always do rem0te

#

With tech consulting at least

grand kayak
#

Japan is almost 0 remote.

lunar crest
lunar crest
#

plus remote they pay you the regional salary

#

not of the highest salary

grand kayak
#

But I can get a nice 20sqm apt for $800

clear ferry
#

I’m remote, but still living in a relatively HCOL area. Average rent prices in my area are $1500-1800 for studio, but I still live with my parents for free because remote jz_misspinki_confetti

lunar crest
#

in Toronto at least

#

unless its shared with someone

#

smallest ive seen is like...400-500 sq ft

#

thats 37 sq m

clear ferry
#

yeah Japan has micro apartments but that’s just not a thing in California pain

grand kayak
lunar crest
#

yeah no... im defintely against tiny apartments XD

#

i would die right now no joke... my stress level already through the roof

grand kayak
#

Why? Better than sharing with a stranger who steals your food and hides boys under their bed

lunar crest
#

cant go outside and be safe cause covid... so need to be inside

#

and if thats my inside space of 200sq ft....ooof

grand kayak
#

Would much prefer to be inside on my own than with someone I hate

#

Or worse, three people I hate.

lunar crest
#

there are good roomates!

grand kayak
#

I’ve had one out of 13.

#

One even got evicted for doing drugs and being four months behind on rent. šŸ˜…

lunar crest
#

i had 1 bad out of like 5 maybe 6

grand kayak
#

I like being in control of my own space. The small part isn’t bad, though I sometimes wish I had a bigger desk. But I can make my own hours and cook my own food and not worry about working around someone else’s schedule.

#

Especially if they’re total strangers.

lunar crest
#

yeah for that here will have to pay the prem for being in a studio room

#

studios are also more expensive than some shared rooms

grand kayak
#

Or who leave dishes in the sink for weeks. Or don’t ever take out the trash or whatever.

lunar crest
#

eh i think that counts as bad for me XD

grand kayak
#

Some people are fine with that, but I am not.

lunar crest
#

like just being respectful in general

clear ferry
#

also note Toronto’s rent prices skyrocketed in the past years (like 150%+), but that’s not the case in other… far away close to the wilderness cities lool

grand kayak
#

But if there aren’t any jobs, then cheap housing doesn’t really matter. šŸ˜…

lunar crest
#

yup shrug

#

i mean theres a lot of livable places in GTA

#

eg Oakville 2 bed 2 bath is 2600

#

thats 1/2

#

and they can defs work toronto dt jobs

grand kayak
#

The trouble with staying in Tokyo is I’m already pretty near the top of what people like me can make (which is just over $30k/yr USD). And I don’t want to be stuck with that. It’s paycheck to paycheck, but at least it’s livable.

#

I make more than the average in Japan. Wild when you think about how pricy some of the city housing gets. (I’m about half an hour out of the city proper.)

#

(It’s wild to see people talking about $80k/yr and stuff being average, because that’s way beyond what I ever would’ve thought to look for.)

winter fulcrum
#

Can't compare countries though

#

Even when converting money

#

Here 80k a year would be crazy high (even in dollars)

grand kayak
#

True, but even in the US, that seems insanely out of reach. (I was making $10/hr full time when I lived there.)

lunar crest
#

depends on the company some tech salaries are pretty shocking for me in the states

grand kayak
#

Only for the best of the best, which is not me. ._.

clear ferry
#

yeah tech salaries are insane

grand kayak
#

I survived on the $10/hr, but having no insurance was the worst.

lunar crest
#

Eg this is Facebook

winter fulcrum
#

I'm currenyl asking 2500 a month (in euroes)

grand kayak
#

And it was impossible to save.

clear ferry
#

i do not identify as best of the best, but I still managed to get $75k with 1 internship yewhat

winter fulcrum
#

Lol that's crazy

grand kayak
#

That’s still a whole internship more than I have.

winter fulcrum
#

Cognizant only gave me 500 euro a month

lunar crest
#

im getting... equiv to...

clear ferry
#

yeah, the first internship was barely above minimum wage

#

you just need that one start and then the salary goes up higher with more experience

grand kayak
#

Ugh, I’m feeling like maybe I should just quit and settle for this paycheck to paycheck teacher salary. xD

lunar crest
#

62.5k a year USD equiv only here lol

clear ferry
#

some people go their entire life making $40k, but tech has incredibly high growth jz_misspinki_sweat

winter fulcrum
#

How do companies like Accenture pay in the US?

#

For junior roles

grand kayak
clear ferry
#

which imo i don’t agree with, teachers and public workers def need to be paid more

lunar crest
grand kayak
#

Me and my $15-20/hr… T__T

#

It’s summer right now, so no money for this month.

#

Which is partly why seeing even anything above $40k/yr, especially if it has, like, PTO or insurance, seems so awesome. But if it’s not actually livable…

lunar crest
lunar crest
grand kayak
#

But you have to have the money to buy property first, anyway.

lunar crest
#

yeah

grand kayak
#

(Also, as a renter who has been ripped off often, I am not a big fan of landlords…)

lunar crest
#

technically... if I didnt mess up super hard... i was pulling in about 3-4k sometimes 10k a month from investing in stocks and etc...but I highly dont recommend doing that

#

im a pretty resonable and approachable landlord... pepesmile

grand kayak
#

Yeah, I’m just trying to make sure I can put food on my table. šŸ˜…

#

Maybe go see a couple plays… do a budget trip once a year…

#

(I am really good at planning whole vacations for under $300.)

lunar crest
lunar crest
grand kayak
#

No car at all! Just $80 on trains each month. Haha.

#

It involves sleeping in manga cafe booths and taking local trains everywhere (which takes many many times longer than bullet trains or flying), so I don’t recommend it if your time is valuable, but if you have time and not money…

lunar crest
#

yikes ok XD

grand kayak
#

I end up with long unpaid breaks, so it’s great for me.

#

I’d try to work other jobs or whatever, but… that’s illegal.

lunar crest
#

yeah right now i have 0vacation days LOL

#

im paid in leiu

#

but i dont have vacation days

grand kayak
#

I have 0 vacation days, but I do have all of August off with no pay.
