#Cost of Living vs Salaries
1 messages Ā· Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Thatās still over a third of my monthly salary, tho.
I hear you donāt want to spend more than that third.
up down... that can go up to about 5500 a month
Holy!
I only make 30k/yrā¦
i make 76k a year... but idk how much that can go up lol
Well, in USD.
I was thinking Iād be thrilled with anything above 40 or 50. Haha
in Canada this salary is not abd at all
Guess I gotta aim higher XD
there was that article I shared yesterday but yeah pretty much Van and Toronto is like
one of the worst not livable places
Wait, this is just on what you make over 50k, right? Not that theyāll take 25k of your 50k?
Sheesh. I pay almost 3x that for less than half the space. xD
its the same as states tax bands
u dont pay tax on the total 50%
Okay, cool.
u pay on the part thats over that bracket
a lot of ppl have that misconception with taxes
Took me a while to get the bracket thing before because some people tried to explain that they were against taxes by saying it was 30% of all your income yadayada
yeah those ppl are out to lunch and dont get taxes
Japan is also on a bracket system. And we pay insurance and such based on previous yearās income.
i think taxes are stupid in the sense of how theyre spent efficiently by the gov
but thats a different story XD
(My bills went down this year because COVID-19 cut my salary last yearā¦)
Ugh, all the places I have considered living have terrible costs of living. Whatās a poor person to do? xD
move out of the city or move to a part of the city thats cheaper
I wanted to pop in and say 50k USD would be paycheck to paycheck in cities like SF, LA, NYC but reasonable in cities like Louisville, KY
and or share appartments like eg get a 2bed 2 bath and convert the den to another bedroom
But are there good jobs to be found there?
yeah youād definitely have to share apartments
theres regional offices of some big companies
same in winnipeg LOL
define good?
Ugh, donāt wanna ever deal with roommates again. Maybe I will stay in Tokyo after all.
like $700/month in a decent place close to uni
with tech jobs you can also work remote tho
Like, actual interesting work that doesnāt pay based on the cost in that area.
Depends
the pay cut you take from working remote is less than what you save living in a cheaper place
like good growth, high paying? A lot of companies are going remote now (my internship place and current workplace offer remote), so theyāre getting paid maybe a little less but still insanely above the median in their LCOL areas
Yes, but thatās rare, even with the pandemic. Most places are only part remote that Iāve seen.
Japan is almost 0 remote.
not aways... depends
Yeah, same here
But I can get a nice 20sqm apt for $800
Iām remote, but still living in a relatively HCOL area. Average rent prices in my area are $1500-1800 for studio, but I still live with my parents for free because remote
thats too small to exist I think
in Toronto at least
unless its shared with someone
smallest ive seen is like...400-500 sq ft
thats 37 sq m
yeah Japan has micro apartments but thatās just not a thing in California
Been doing it for 7 years. I love the size for me. Wish theyād do more tiny apartments in western cities. Itād help with the CoL.
yeah no... im defintely against tiny apartments XD
i would die right now no joke... my stress level already through the roof
Why? Better than sharing with a stranger who steals your food and hides boys under their bed
cant go outside and be safe cause covid... so need to be inside
and if thats my inside space of 200sq ft....ooof
Would much prefer to be inside on my own than with someone I hate
Or worse, three people I hate.
there are good roomates!
Iāve had one out of 13.
One even got evicted for doing drugs and being four months behind on rent. š
i had 1 bad out of like 5 maybe 6
I like being in control of my own space. The small part isnāt bad, though I sometimes wish I had a bigger desk. But I can make my own hours and cook my own food and not worry about working around someone elseās schedule.
Especially if theyāre total strangers.
yeah for that here will have to pay the prem for being in a studio room
studios are also more expensive than some shared rooms
My bad might be closer to your neutral. š I do not like people who keep me up all night or wake me up at 5am.
Or who leave dishes in the sink for weeks. Or donāt ever take out the trash or whatever.
eh i think that counts as bad for me XD
Some people are fine with that, but I am not.
like just being respectful in general
also note Torontoās rent prices skyrocketed in the past years (like 150%+), but thatās not the case in other⦠far away close to the wilderness cities lool
But if there arenāt any jobs, then cheap housing doesnāt really matter. š
yup
i mean theres a lot of livable places in GTA
eg Oakville 2 bed 2 bath is 2600
thats 1/2
and they can defs work toronto dt jobs
The trouble with staying in Tokyo is Iām already pretty near the top of what people like me can make (which is just over $30k/yr USD). And I donāt want to be stuck with that. Itās paycheck to paycheck, but at least itās livable.
I make more than the average in Japan. Wild when you think about how pricy some of the city housing gets. (Iām about half an hour out of the city proper.)
(Itās wild to see people talking about $80k/yr and stuff being average, because thatās way beyond what I ever wouldāve thought to look for.)
Can't compare countries though
Even when converting money
Here 80k a year would be crazy high (even in dollars)
True, but even in the US, that seems insanely out of reach. (I was making $10/hr full time when I lived there.)
depends on the company some tech salaries are pretty shocking for me in the states
Only for the best of the best, which is not me. ._.
yeah tech salaries are insane
I survived on the $10/hr, but having no insurance was the worst.
Eg this is Facebook
I'm currenyl asking 2500 a month (in euroes)
And it was impossible to save.
i do not identify as best of the best, but I still managed to get $75k with 1 internship
Lol that's crazy
Thatās still a whole internship more than I have.
Cognizant only gave me 500 euro a month
im getting... equiv to...
yeah, the first internship was barely above minimum wage
you just need that one start and then the salary goes up higher with more experience
Ugh, Iām feeling like maybe I should just quit and settle for this paycheck to paycheck teacher salary. xD
62.5k a year USD equiv only here lol
some people go their entire life making $40k, but tech has incredibly high growth
ONLY?? That still seems crazy high to me.
which imo i donāt agree with, teachers and public workers def need to be paid more
compared to other salaries of like 90k at the same level USD
Me and my $15-20/hr⦠T__T
Itās summer right now, so no money for this month.
Which is partly why seeing even anything above $40k/yr, especially if it has, like, PTO or insurance, seems so awesome. But if itās not actually livableā¦
defintely would be nice a lot of nurses are also underpaid for eg
the funny thing is as a landlord i make almost 50k a year which was maybe a lot easier than landing a job for 50k a year lol
But you have to have the money to buy property first, anyway.
yeah
(Also, as a renter who has been ripped off often, I am not a big fan of landlordsā¦)
technically... if I didnt mess up super hard... i was pulling in about 3-4k sometimes 10k a month from investing in stocks and etc...but I highly dont recommend doing that
im a pretty resonable and approachable landlord...
Yeah, Iām just trying to make sure I can put food on my table. š
Maybe go see a couple plays⦠do a budget trip once a yearā¦
(I am really good at planning whole vacations for under $300.)
get a car or two as well every other year (jkjk)
thats a super valuable skill that I wish I had lol
No car at all! Just $80 on trains each month. Haha.
It involves sleeping in manga cafe booths and taking local trains everywhere (which takes many many times longer than bullet trains or flying), so I donāt recommend it if your time is valuable, but if you have time and not moneyā¦
yikes ok XD
I end up with long unpaid breaks, so itās great for me.
Iād try to work other jobs or whatever, but⦠thatās illegal.
yeah right now i have 0vacation days LOL
im paid in leiu
but i dont have vacation days
I have 0 vacation days, but I do have all of August off with no pay.
