Really its just the logo itself that I am wondering about.

I like the square more, but I think that the text could use a bit more balancing.
Square works really well for legibility, and works well at smaller sizes as well.
"square" orientation is a gold standard for a lot of high quality logos for that reason.

I think with a bit of adjustment, and text size adjustment towards whatever text is sitting to the right of it will make it look more balanced.

As for why I prefer it; I just think the top one looks a little "squished" 😬
