What do you feel isn't working about it?

plucky basalt
#

the spacing between the essence and collective

bold siren
#

The dead space created there, you mean?

#

Or more generally the looseness of how they connect?

bold siren
#

Do you want them to fit together like puzzle pieces?

plucky basalt
#

yeah

#

for sure

#

its definetly my goal

#

but not like exactly like puzzle pieces, doesn't have to fully change the letter's character for it, if you get me ๐Ÿ˜‰

bold siren
#

Then you need to... do that, heh. Move the letters around so that they fit into the negative space better. Make sure you have a set limit on how close together they can be, to keep them legible/distinct letter forms.

plucky basalt
#

alright

#

going for this vibe of a logo i made some time ago

#

which is placed well

bold siren
#

So you know exactly how to do it. You just need to put in the work.

plucky basalt
#

not really i had paid a designer to help me

#

i only had the loose letters

bold siren
#

You mean you paid another designer to help you. You are a designer, too.

plucky basalt
#

yeah it was before i heard about this awesome place

plucky basalt
#

mostly only creating letters, not how to make them look right if you get me

bold siren
#

Nevertheless, you are designing, so you're a designer, inexperienced as you may be.

plucky basalt
#

yeah thats true

bold siren
#

Okay, well, like I said, either take the shape of each letter and push it around until you get the shape you're looking for, or on paper/a blank digital canvas, draw out the rough shapes of the letters squished together until you get something you want, then finalize it.

plucky basalt
#

alright

#

thanks!

bold siren
#

Even just quick line drawings of the letters will help you place the letters in interlocking positions, like this. Do like 10 of those and it will help you work through the possibilities.

#

Once you have something that fits together in a satisfying way, then you can move on to the stylized brush strokes.

plucky basalt
#

is this melting thing with the l and s cool?

#

sometimes, it needs another person's view since its for something personal

bold siren
#

It's neat, but it also reduces legibility. If legibility is less of a concern (that is, if you or other people already in the know are the primary audience) then you can get away with it.

plucky basalt
#

it has like 2 "version" the flower one you helped with earlier and then this typography brush logo

bold siren
#

That flower one is much more refined than this one is. They're kinda going in diverging directions. I do like this rough and messy aesthetic more, mind you.

plucky basalt
#

so idk if legibility would matter as much?

bold siren
#

Like I said, depends on the audience. If they already know what it's supposed to say, you can be more abstract/loose with the forms, focus more on the interesting shapes. If you're trying to attract people to it, you may want to make sure to retain a certain level of clarity in the letterforms.

plucky basalt
bold siren
#

I think the flower could actually be pushed even further away from this aesthetic to make it fit better by making it almost a wireframe. Like, use just a very thin stroke to build the flower out of very few points. The contrast of that look could make it stand up next to this.

plucky basalt
#

yeah i agree, at the moment i am focusing on finishing this so i can make the flower one like you told make the lines like a thin stroke like you said!

plucky basalt
#

haha

#

your emoji sense of humor is pretty funny i gotta say

#

is the e getting to long there?

#

hmmm ๐Ÿค”

bold siren
#

Nah, that's fun

#

Though the T could do that instead and make more sense

plucky basalt
#

oh the long line?

bold siren
#

Yeah

plucky basalt
#

and make the e "duck" under it?

#

or make the line connect with the e?

bold siren
#

Something like this

plucky basalt
#

alright!

#

like this?

#

whoops

bold siren
#

Maybe some of this

plucky basalt
#

alrighty!

#

like that?

bold siren
#

Yeah, nice

plucky basalt
#

and then, the V and the E

bold siren
#

The V doesn't read too clearly. Could be a U, could be an L. The E doesn't help there.

plucky basalt
#

ahh

bold siren
#

Maybe something likke this?

plucky basalt
#

yeah, could be

#

1 sec

bold siren
#

Still looks U-ish. Make that V shape more distinctive

plucky basalt
bold siren
#

Yeah!

plucky basalt
#

this is the full thing at the moment, anything you can point out?

bold siren
#
  • The Ss could use a bit more attention
  • The C and E at the end of Essence interact strangely
  • The T could use a more tapered stem, maybe
  • There's two styles to the Es, one with just horizontal strokes, and one with the connecting vertical bar. Maybe you want to make them all constructed a bit more similarly?
plucky basalt
#

heres a version without the melted L

#

maybe a little tilt?

bold siren
#

The melted L looks kinda forced in there. If it carried through more naturally, it might work better.
The chunkier second S from the first one is nice.
I like the exaggerated tilt.

#

Something happened to the first L, makes it weaker when it tapers to nothing at the end.

plucky basalt
#

yeah

#

it probably had a car accident

#

hold up

#

and made the e better!

bold siren
#

Oh that's much cleaner.

#

It's starting to give me hand-drawn 70s-80s horror title (which is great in my books)

#

The V is still standing out as it's basically the only letter that tapers to a point that doesn't match the stroke.

plucky basalt
#

yeah that will be fixed

bold siren
#

Right now it's 4 lines/3 angles, but only needs to be 2 lines/1 angle. And could terminate in more square strokes, at least on one side.

plucky basalt
#

but i gotta go so ill see ya later

plucky basalt
bold siren
#

This is really coming along!

plucky basalt
#

yeah

#

anything else you wanna point out?

bold siren
#

I meant something like this for the V

#

And maybe just make sure the distance between letters isn't smaller than the distance between letter pieces
