#WOOOO!

ooh I use nextjs instead of react (for most things). though exceptions apply haha. vanilla js seems like a smart move tho
It's certainly made things easier to work with, but I can't take credit on the choice - the applications are just old!
ahh i get you
What brought you to the Design Buddies server? I just joined haha
I was looking to work with designers on personal projects, but that ended up not happening, and now i just like chatting here from time to time haha
Lol that's fair!
so you are new to development too or just used to older tech?
God I always feel new to development tbh
i made a thread so we don't flood general with dev chat but the others haven't arrived hahaha
ohh i hear you haha
I started my first job back in the beginning of 2019
I worked as a full-stack developer there which gave some experience in primarily Angular. Then I met a UX Architect and I was like This seems way more fun
I was networking with a UX Designer earlier and he brought up this server, how it was made during the pandemic. That sounded like a great place to meet more people, see if there are other people going through similar motions
I gotcha, good move
ahh cool! I like grace, also relate a lot to her marathon story
I actually don't know about Grace's story beyond what I've said, what happened?
she posted on linkedin that she got injured and then ended up pursuing ux later on
cut a lot out but yea
it is hard to say, hahaha. i was a gamer, then sort of wanted to do something else, got injured doing that, then went to canada; and then managed a pet hotel, while doing that, i realised i should play to my strengths because i was updating the company website and stuff, paying people to help and im like thinking
why on earth am i not doing what that person is doing instead. so then i did a bootcamp!
i think my love for games died! so i no longer had an interest in competing
NOOO
Though at the same time I'm just starting to feel like I can't bring myself to play much these days hahaha
haha, maybe that's good! nah they are fine casually
That's a really cool background!!
i just don't recommend esports to anyone personally
That just sounds like a griiiind. You have to be on top of it and perpetually young lol
The idea of Rocket League was fun back in the day but I couldn't get far enough
Ooooh letsgooo
So from there you went on to become a software engineer, with some interest in working with design sounds like
hmm design isn't really my thing
but i wanted to find designers to do projects with
thought it would look better haha, for my resume
Makes sense, portfolios always look better with that sleek, cool ui flair
Tbh that's a good question.
I really like the idea of being a UX Designer. I just can't stand coding where I've been
At the same time, a UX Engineer in a Design team also sounds like fun
Just being more involved with the process would be great.
I went into my Bachelor's in Computer Science thinking I'd pursue 3D Animation. Though from there the best I could do was create some (not-so-great-looking) projects, do some video internships (paid in exposure), but ultimately had to play to what I learned in college, programming.
After I heard about UX, I felt like it was a much better way to have a creative outlet in CS
yeah i think only you know if you enjoy it, but it sounds like a solid plan. also i think comp sci skills might help with communication for ux too
Here's hoping! So far my experience has been
"We're looking for more experienced designers" or "We don't want a developer" lmfao
: ( lol
It's been an interesting limbo, so at this point I want to know, who else goes through this and what are people doing to get out of it?
i really wanted to show my managerial experience on my resume, cus i was kind of proud of it. but i removed it all down to one bullet point. maybe you have to do something similar
it sucks, cus to me writing 200 pages on pet first aid shows more documentation skills than contributing 1 line to an open source repo. but in the eyes of tech people
that 1 line is worth more
truuuue
and explaining to people in interviews that managing a facility is not the same as "hugging dogs", doesn't make me the most excited lol
Might be an opportunity to build rapport, get on their good side so they can get you through the door? 😅
pardon my sarcasm but rather than explain that every interview, it's easier to just remove it lol
That's fair too. Having too much focus there can take away from your overall experience
i feel as if im being condescending if i have to explain to someone that a manager, manages
and not does the junior position
so removing it was the best option imo
but going back to your dilemma, you could try it. it might feel uncomfortable for you to remove a bunch of dev stuff
and see what the outcome is?
Sounds like a good plan. It gives you control of how you want the conversation to go
Possibly, I think removing some programming from my skills section could give a better design/hci impression?
Yup. The other challenge is trying to throw together these solo design projects for your portfolio as well
