I've also:
Met and worked with 6-8 mentors regularly on ADP list with little takeaways or support. Maybe I am expecting too much?
Stumbled through one free YouTube UX design course and currently struggling to build an app to finish coursera's program.
Networked and joined volunteer projects. Struggled to keep up. Web3? AI? UXR? VR? Crypto? I feel clueless.
"AI, crypto, NFT, bitcoin, Machine Learning, Gamification," those are all fields of their own. You don't need to master those to be a UX designer, although many people in UX may have adjacent interests within them. Otherwise UX designers everywhere would need to be specialists across every industry.
If you have experience with web design, front end work, branding, production designer... You have experience with UX. Almost everyone has some overlap with UX, those are particularly close fields though.
It sounds like you either have (no offense intended, just being objective) a broken belief framework that is inhibiting you, or you have had poor exposure and mentorship š¤
I suspect it is more largely broken beliefs. This is thematically a challenge for many
i guess it could be some of both. Itās weird because people say things like i have experience with UX but when they learn itās all in marketing, itās suddenly no good.
When i see product designers post online, they look and sound like experts and they seem to post about all these different things so I infered that these people must be at least near genuis level intelligence to deeply understand such complex topics. This is my only exposure to Ux design since i donāt know anyone in real life who works in UX. I havenāt had much luck with mentors, just a few chats with no regular goals or planning. Are there mentors for hire? I thought about taking a bootcamp just for the mentor but they only meet a few times with each student. I just donāt know how to change this, or if itās something iām even smart enough to do.
People who assume that UX is tied to a specific indusry usually don't have a good understanding of UX. UX is industry agnostic, really. It's learned through soft skills and that are augmented by hard skills.
I often think that UX is really just the skill of being human. This is a bit fanciful d: but there is some truth to it. People who listen, hear, and critically think do well in UX bc of well they connect people.
Social media only shows what people want to show. Speak with authority and only tell the narrative you want to tell, you'll look like a genius 𤷠but they're just normal people. It's all about framing. We are all geniuses in our own respective spaces, too. Don't count yourself out from that.
We have to learn to see things as they really are, not just how others want to see them. Just like with UX research, learning to hear what people mean and who they are beyond the words they might use š¤
You can find mentors on ADP List, who might even specialize in what you need. Additionally, there are good people who would meet and work with you if you asked them directly. I'm just a guy, like anyone, but I would be open to a discovery call with you.
I agree with the idea of UX being a very human centered area of study. I would be fine with working in pretty much any industry except gaming or social media. I don't have a dream company like many people, I just want to work with a supportive team, think more critically in design and maybe get some experience that isn't marketing.
I've worked with about 8 mentors on ADP list over the last year. Several of those mentors were very clear about marketing not being transferable experience or skills to UX so it's been difficult to get any ideas about how to move past that. No matter how I reframe experience and skills, people still figure out I've worked in marketing.
That makes sense about social media, I don't participate or engage in social media personally but I've been kinda forcing myself to follow UX designers because it seems like it's one way people can learn. It's hard for me to figure out what space I'm even in because I've always been a generalist out of necessity.
If you are still open to a discovery call, I would appreciate it very much. I'm on PST and available usually after 7p Mon - Thurs. Thank you for sharing your experieces.
Book either a 15 minute or 30 minute meeting from the same link. - Powered by Reclaim.ai
Wtf is with mentors gatekeeping the industry
I also follow designers to see what tricks they share. Sometimes I even learn something between the cringe lol, a lot of the time it tends to be hot takes out of context though
Hi Tim, sorry for my delayed reply. I had some personal things to deal with the last week or so.
Iāve scheduled a meet with the link you provided for Friday at 11:45a. Please let me know if you need to reschedule. Thank you, looking forward to speaking with you.
Hi Tim. I'm sorry I missed out call friday. I had something come up at the last minute with work and was not able to find this thread in the discord in time to message you, it's very hard for me to find messages here. If you would still be willing to meet, I would appreciate the time to chat. Thank you.
