Sure! here's some examples from my website
For certain themes and asks like spot illustrations for tech or iconography you don't want to send in a realistic super detailed illustration
Something too realistic and detailed may not scale, or it might just not fit the branding
I think logos fall into this category too (like my personal one)
When you have a basis of understanding in illustration, and have also learned how to abstract things into simpler, but still recognizable, forms it helps!

And i would agree, it is rare to see realism being the market choice when it comes to designing. Although 3d realistic designs have been trendy these days~ still

yeah I think there's room for realism in certain executions and places, but it tends to be more of an illustrator role than a graphic design role!
