Before she left to embark on this journey however, one morning while collecting rain water near the brook a duck aproached her. It stood there, 2ft away staring at her. A strange feeling washed over Marie, and she reached into her satchel to pull out some fresh fish pulled from the fish traps. Handing the fish to to duck and returning to the camp, she found herself being followed by this duck. She attempted to shoo it away to no avail, and so now she journeys with this duck as her companion always by her side.

@umbral osprey I was a bard tank in our last campaign, heading all the way up to level 20. There are a few things to note if you want to be a bard. Bards are the most versatile class. If you want to go the traditional route and be a support bard, you are best going with College of Lore. I say this because you can get to pick Even More spells from other character classes, and you get to use cutting words, which you can use alongside Guidance, cause no one said you can't learn cantrips from other classes as your spells. But you were wondering about tankiness. For this you want the college of swords, and you probably want to take a 1 level dip into wizard or sorcerer. (Similarly, I'd advise wizards to always take a level dip into another class to have better bonus actions.) But you're picking 1 level of sorcerer or wizard to get the extra spells from those classes that you would normally get from college of lore. I picked storm sorcery for the mobility, but you do you. The two most pivotal spells for tankiness are shield and absorb elements. And then you use your defensive blade flourish. This starts with giving you an extra d6 of AC for 4 rounds or so, but this grows to a d12 of AC for 5 rounds as you max out charisma and levels. So if you need the reaction shield spell, you can boost your AC by 11.5 on average for 5 rounds. It's not long, but you get to pick the rounds. Then learn mirror image, so that even if they hit you it's probably not you.

Other general bard advice: get the war caster feat, because you do the most damage per spell level via concentration. For damage dealing your best bet is spirit guardians, since the spell moves with you, the radius is large, and the move speed decrease on enemies is awesome. You should at least one of polymorph and enlarge/reduce. Polymorph is better to disable enemies, and enlarge is better to buff friends. But you could always learn both. If you have war caster pick eldritch blast as one of your spells from other classes, since you can use it for your reaction when people try to flee. (Just as long as all blasts are on the single target.) Make sure to get dimension door or a similar mobility spell (thunder step, misty step, etc.) For bards and any other class that gets level 9 spells: get wish, because the spell which you copy with it is cast via a level 9 spell slot. Wish spell to cast fireball? That's a level 9 fireball. Haste is fun, but the exhaustion is tough. It's value depends on the campaign, and odds of getting randomly jumped before the next long rest. Also, if you tend to go up against a lot of low level goons, animate objects is good, but it's weak to high level AOEs and high ACs, so again, depends. Same with heat metal, intellect fortress, and silence. (Those spells specifically can be OP, but their value depends on the campaign and standard enemies.) At high level you should also pick up glibness, since every persuasion check you make will be over 20.

The most memorable round I ever had of D&D was when I was level 19 in that last campaign. For my final feat I picked metamagic adept. So when I got to cast flamestrike (via the wish spell) on 8 horde blocks of undead pirates I used empowered spell. Hordes are vulnerable to AOE, but our DM had not expected anyone to be able to hit all the hordes with a single aoe. I broke 100 damage in a round. And then the undead pirate captain got furious with me, and proceeded to mis me with every attack despite action surging. My AC was 27 though, and he did kill one of my mirror images.

That being said, the fighter and warlock broke 100 damage a round several times. If you build your character right and get to the 18-20 range of play there will be times... like if a cleric crits and smites an undead boss.

depends how your dm decides to do it- but generally, base AC for everyone is 10 + dexterity modifier, with actual armour added or subtracted
initiative is a d20 +dexterity modifer(rolled anew at the beginning of every combat)- inspiration is granted during a campaign based on actions, or the spells/abilities of certain classes

if it's your character sheet, you can just write down your dexterity modifier

I dislike how im using the handbooks quick build at most part as other spells and cantrips seem so bad in contrast

so basically do i wanna take insight, investigation, medicine or religion

i get 2 of those

insight is always good regardless of what your group consists of, since it can detect when someone is lying or hiding something

I dont think ill have any use for religion
