#145: The Great Plexodus

Alex I waffled on the 9950x option too. That proArt board is nice but I guess I'd you can live with fewer lanes it'll work. I'd rather have one as far as CPU vs my TR 5955wx but remember the RAM cost and thruput. Even comparing DDR4 to ddr5 speeds the TR should have better bandwidth. And. Having 256gb in 8x32gb sticks of ddr4 is cheap compared to 4x64gb of ddr5. If your not running VMs or large zfs array you probably don't need anywhere close to 256gb (or even 138gb) but if you spin up a bunch of VMs I'm sure you know how quickly the RAM disappears
I waffled on my epyc 7f52 vs threadripper 5955wx vs 9950x and the new stuff is really exciting but man those lanes just limited me. I have 8 sata now but can add another card, that 4xnvme card is no worries and I can run a Radeon card for graphics and have that Nvidia for transcode. I think the TR is probably a better "growing" system unless gaming is your thing.
Oh and yeah I ended up ditching rockstor / truenas / unRAID in favor of tumbleweed. FTW I likes me some openSUSE. Since the raid array is for backups I'm going to use the backup software to version not btrfs so ext4 with raid6. I do wish I could get unbreaking zfs in tumbleweed, or even better (to me) btrfs that isn't dangerous with raid5/6.
@compact wadi this what ive ended up settling on, for now at least
all your points are extremely valid
I really wanted that zen5 goodness. I just couldn't make it work π¦ I went the "all in one" route as you say
And I've avoided putting a watt meter on it...
haha you know what? the funny thing is this 2 server solution uses less power than the threadripper and epyc boxes
I've got a couple of these:

in this case:
If you just need pure compute/proxmox nodes. Wendell has done a couple videos on them and they've worked out great for me so far, 32c/64t with a max power usage of like 200w combined. There's also a guy in the Sliger discord who uses the Intel version (AR900i, really hard to find) in his HL15

oh these are some really cool options
I wanted one of these badly but needed 8-sata ports. I thought about one of those nvme to SATA adapters but in the end there were too many horror stories to ignore. Granted a lot of YouTube videos praising these adapters but most online posts were just the opposite.
Ultimately I do second guess my choice. Wonder if buying another Synology would have been best bet, and then just stick with my existing beelinks (ser5 max, each with 32gb/1tb nvme/5800H 8c/16t) But I wanted more transcode power and these ryzens aren't Intel's as far as quicksync.
If you can find an AR900i I think it's basically a mobile 13900k with quick sync and all that. They stopped making them last year for some reason and minisforum announced a new version in Hong Kong, but idk if they ever got released.
Regarding ntfy you can forward to upstream ntfy.sh servers, which if you want Apple Instant Push notifications you have too. https://docs.ntfy.sh/config/?h=ios#ios-instant-notifications

Great show title. π
Alex you need redundancy in your workload now? You could say you need it to be highly available even. Perhaps even orchestrated.... π
Just wanted to throw a quick call out about the comment in the show that having multiple media libraries per family takes up more disk space if you have the media in multiple libraries.
This isnβt a problem as long as you are using Linux and the libraries are on the same disk. Use hard links.
shhh we don't say the K word.
regarding the wifi camera with usb c. i can recommend the unifi G4 Instant. You get your AI detections and all. π
i get thats its 3 times the price of a wyze cam, but its another good reason to go unifi protect. π I dont know if the new API has done any marvels for the home assistant integrations yet, but i guess it is possible.
@modern dragon I wrote a post about my setup where I tag a movie or show on the *arr and that tag gets written to the NFO file which then gets picked up by jellyfin and the kids account can only see media with this tag on it, across all libraries. https://blog.tiserbox.com/posts/2025-03-01-parental-control-with-jellyfin-and-radarr-sonarr.html
Pretty easy to setup actually
very nice @shrewd heath
Regarding CO2 sensors, I have a few around my house that trigger a HA automation if they go above 1000ppm to set my thermostats to circulation mode for some period to bring it back down
Most of the time it's from a party going on in the living room so there's one spike in that room triggering the circulation mode
i think this is the other NVR software you were thinking of alex: https://github.com/roflcoopter/viseron
I figured it would have been Frigate - https://frigate.video/
what do you all use for an ios app for frigate?
There wasn't even an app for Android iirc. The PWA works great on Android though... Although I know that doesn't help IOS plebians π
yeah it's just a PWA on android. works well though. but i do mostly directly get the RTSP feeds through TinyCam. Frigate is more for looking at events
PWA?
Progressive web app
gotcha so i guess another solution is build a home assistant dashboard page for them too
This is a 10/10 the way to go if you use HAss on the regular to check stuff. I DM-ed you a few pics of the super simple dashboard I have set up
I don't have the live feed on there, but you can also have a Frigate "Live Feed" card
And it's super configurable. I have the last few people seen in certain zones displayed on the dashboard, but you can show the last few trucks/hot dogs/baseball bats/cars etc
Yeah frigate has a custom HA card that's pretty slick
It did break for me on the most recent update but that was unavoidable I think. I believe Frigate changed how they were doing some of the config and notification stuff
I'm not an iOS person anymore, but the last time I was they were just adding support for those custom widget things and I recall home assistant had some. If they have a way to display a frigate card on the iOS home screen from home assistant that could be really cool.
Lmk if that's a thing if you're willing. I'm medium curious now
well expect to hear about frigate soon. i just took usb coral delivery π
Where did you find one?
Huh. Thought they weren't being made anymore
Oh look at that. Not bad on the pricing
Oh and not likely as much of an issue now but plug it into a USB 3 port. With 2.0 your inference speed will be much slower
I know a lot of people use a PWA but there is this app
Looks like iOS only, but that's still really cool
Did you publish anything about this yet?
ran out of episodes π
You have a rough surprise ahead of you I'm sorry to say, good sir
Wdym?
The show is over π
Oh, but Alex puts out content other than Self-hosted, right?
ktz systems on youtube.
tailscale on youtube.
Yes. I presumed you were a Christmas-and-Easter listener who was a little behind and dropped in to ask at your spot in the episode queue
Which was perhaps incorrect but made sense in my head canon
Any plans for a frigate video or blog post?
Just ordered my Coral, so was just curious
c'mon, run it in the RV π
