Light bounces from the person holding the towel, the light hits the mirror between them and you, then bounces off into your eye. Tho it looks like the mirror can “see through” the towel, the mirror that’s actually directly behind the towel isn’t doing anything at all.

The way I made that make some slight sense to my youngest brother was by showing him that I could hold up the towel directly to the right of the mirror and it would look the same even tho I was holding the towel onto the wall
