I have an idea:
New currency: D-points (like in webshop)
For each 100 D-points equal 20 D-gems.
You can also get free d-gems per 3 battles in gold league (from then on)
prob 1-2 dgems at first then maybe 10-11 at max.
Participating in leaderboards also gives you dgems (only if first, second, or third place after its ended)
Completing operations also gives you dgems.
Suggest me for more ideas, if needed
