They weren't cheap after mk2, the point of that was to make it easier to get mk2 stuff and increase the cost for stuff past mk2 4

I don't follow that really. Prior to the silver rush upgrades were increasingly expensive up to mk2, especially after level 9. Then they dropped back massively before increasing again through the mk2 upgrades.
