If you can hit Tarantulas before they lock you down, it's solid. I run Fafnir with Spike-Atomizer for Extermination, Aegis allows it to avoid most damage sources. Tarantulas aren't breaking two Spikes, and most things die quickly to Atomizers
Level 1 Atomizers make quick work of anything that isn't a Wanderer (those take like 5-8 seconds to kill with atomizers alone; Breath helps with that) and you also outspeed the ice-rocket or redeemer spiders
It's got enough survivability to be viable in Extermination up to stage 3-4 (4 is pushing it, Bird Eaters shred it)

I wouldn't say they're worth investing in anyway, just sharing a build. Point in case, Fafnir is okay for exterm if you have Spikes to protect from DoT effects. Otherwise it's not that great

Yeah, I run 2 Spike 2 Atomizer. Spikes on the top slots, since the aegis is still usable in flight

Just a little extra protection and covers Fafnir's biggest (imo) weakness in Exterm, being Tarantulas with their Lockdown effect

my strat for level 3 is dropping in an ao jun with hwanje lasers, taking out the first few enemies instantly, but once things heat up i switch to flamer fenrir and take out the hordes before finally deploying any random 3rd robot to complete plat on the first round
2nd round is all about staying alive with minimal damage so i either use typhon for its shields or ophions ability just to last long enough and evade the overpowered stuff later on in the level
if you ever get hwanjes or those other special lasers, keep them for extermination

I tried it out, quad spike is okay. Just have to manually fire each individual harpoon, because of the long time between shots. But it does work
