The tokens can be used to enhance weapons from MK1 to MK2 they can also be used to buy certain mothership turrets

I believe that enhancing MK 1 to MK 2 isn’t with a upgrade token. They are used to make MK 3 upgrades.

When your "normal" weapon gets to level 12, the next promotion will ask you if you want to promote to MK2. This only require gold. There is a similar process when you get to MK2 you get an option to upgrade to MK3, but in this case it now require upgrade token. Also mothership turrets cost tokens.
