In Chinese folklore, there was a tale of a Chinese couple, known by the name of Chang'e and Hou Yi.

For those that have paid attention to the game's new items, you may have heard of the Kimono of Chang'e, and how it was "powered by the magical power of the moon".

#

As implied by the name, Chang'e is known as the Goddess of the Moon in Chinese folklore. However, she was not originally a deity on birth.

#

Before ascending to godhood, she was married to a renowned archer by the name Hou Yi (as mentioned earlier).

One day, for reasons unknown, all ten of her offspring crossed the horizon at once. The combined aura of all of them resulted in the lands deprived of moisture, sending heat waves wave after wave.

Soil ablaze, crops drying, people suffering, the emperor of the kingdom Hou Yi resides in soon tasked him with the important task of striking down the suns.

As per his quest, one by one, the suns began to fall down from the sky. Then as he prepares to strike down the last sun, the Sun Mother, alongside the emperor, begged him to not shoot the last sun...

...for doing so will plunge the kingdom into eternal darkness; one that would be no better than had none of the suns were shot down.

He intended to share the elixirs with his wife Chang'e, but one day...

#

While Hou Yi was out, one of his apprentices, driven by greed and envy towards his master's success, broke into his abode in search of the elixirs.

#

In an effort to prevent the elixirs from falling into the wrong hands, Chang'e swooped the elixirs and consumed them before said apprentice was able to get ahold of them.

#

At the same moment, Hou Yi had just returned to his abode.

#

Before he could process what happened, his wife Chang'e's entire being began to glow as the full moon would on a soft, soothing night.

#

When she took both of the elixirs, Chang'e, or anyone for the matter, failed to see such a simple side effect of such a powerful medicine:

#

If one possesses enough power to grant immortality to those that take it, then two shall possess enough power to grant that who is mortal the ability to ascend to godhood.

#

And sure enough, Chang'e began feeling lighter and lighter. She tried to reach out to Hou Yi, but to no avail, as by now she has already floated as high as a Sky Lantern would moments after it has been released.

#

But she did not stop there, not as if she was able to resist its powers: the elixirs caused her to ascend up to the heavens towards the moon...

#

...where she would spend the rest of her now boundless lifetime in the untouched, serene yet lonely landscape, with no one but a jade rabbit to keep her company.

I see that some of you are familiar with this tale. That is nice.

Neither me or my creator was able to anticipate that a lot of you had invested a lot of time into this folklore, and that is certainly appreciated. After all, it wouldn't hurt to know one of the many tales that came with the Harvest Festival, correct?
