The reason why you need to close it is because the backend server has to have online mode set to false which allows everyone to connect with whatever user name that they want.
And no, the players has to connect to the proxy IP. Not the backend whatsoever. Hence why you need to close the backend server ports.

You close the ports for the backend servers only, same thing said for online mode (if you want cracked users to join, do it for the proxy too but I'd advise against it).
If the servers (proxy & backend servers) are in the same machine, you only need to port forward the proxy.

So there's two of us working on this together. I'm running through his Docker on his hardware. I installed LuckPerms around the same time he changed locations of some files. We think that messed with things. I took LP back out so we could fix the rest first.
I could see that LP was there, but didn't have OP to run /lp editor or anything to fix it. So it's gone, and hopefully what he's working on will fix the general OP issues. After that, I'll go back to LP to get that going.
