there's one VERY important thing to keep in mind:
You can rent a decent minecraft server from a minecraft hosting / gameserver hosting company without problems. However if you want to get a REAL virtual/dedicated server, you'll have to watch out that you are 100% responsible for your server. you have to keep the OS up to date, secure it, etc etc. If someone fucks things up, and your server gets "hacked" and now your server gets abused for bad stuff, e.g. to share child porn (this is not uncommon), then you can expect that the FBI will knock on your door one day.

So, my advice: get a "normal" minecraft server. You should only get a VPS / dedicated server if you really know how to securely run a linux server
