Thanks for creating a spec thread!

Please be sure to include answers to the following questions so people can assist you quicker.

  • What is the purpose of your PC/laptop? (e.g. gaming, general work, 3D rendering)
  • What monitor resolution will you be using? (e.g. 1080p, 1440p, 4k)
  • What is your budget including currency symbol? (e.g. £2,000, 1000€)
  • Is this budget just for the PC or do you need peripherals as well? (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.)
  • Which country are you purchasing from? (Note that we only operate in the UK and Europe)
  • Any brand preferences?

the PC has the bones of a solid build, but I can see some issues for sure, please answer the bot questions so we can advise

#

"Wondering if I'll be able to connect via cable." basically all motherboards these days have an ethernet port, generally 2.5G, so no issues there, the motherboard you've selected just also offers wifi/BT connection as well

nocturne pawn
#

Purpose of the pc is for videogames and programming.
Monitor res will be 1440p
Budget was £3000
This build entails peripherals
Purchasing from UK

#

to start with, RAM, it's slow, and quite little, then the storage, is a bit questionable to me

nocturne pawn
#

Oh I'll have 64 gigs, salvaging from my other pc

#

Of ram

#

Whats wrong with storage?

frozen flare
#

do you plan on using the monitors in tandem for gaming? if you only plan on using one for gaming and the other will be used for things like YT discord and co on the side, then the 155hz panel is wasted money, a 60hz monitor will be just fine

nocturne pawn
#

What so like 1 x 155hz and 1 60hz

#

I see what you mean there

frozen flare
#

the storage is slow, a 5400RPM drive is very slow, by current standards, and loading times will suffer for it

nocturne pawn
#

Aghhh, I didn't think about storage at all

#

I just thought about size

frozen flare
#

as for the RAM, it's generally bad to mix and match, because if the DIMMs aren't identical on the timings, it can result in instability and crashing

#

also, AM5 CPUs love fast RAM, with 6000MHz being the sweetspot

nocturne pawn
#

I understand.

#

Will the ram and storage speed really hamper my experience with it?

frozen flare
#

I'll try and spec something on my break, it'll be based on your spec, as it is in the right direction

nocturne pawn
#

Its a little late..

#

My pc being delivered today

frozen flare
nocturne pawn
#

Damn*

frozen flare
nocturne pawn
#

I mean, storage isn't a big deal I imagine?

frozen flare
#

RAM swaps are quick and easy, and installing another m.2 is easy enough too

nocturne pawn
#

As for the ram, could probably do that myself

nocturne pawn
#

But storage, I doubt I could replace that myself

frozen flare
#

as for the M.2 installation, thats quite easy really

nocturne pawn
#

Ugh, I gotta stop impulse buying

frozen flare
nocturne pawn
#

Will my games run nicely at least?

frozen flare
#

the CPU isn't the greatest for gaming, but solid all the same, the GPU is a good choice, just the RAM and storage will be holding you back currently

#

the RAM will affect your FPS in the sense that it will be incosistent compared to a 6000MHz kit, and as before the HDD will tank your load times

nocturne pawn
#

The cpu isn't greatest for gaming?

#

I thought the 7900x3D was amazing for gaming

frozen flare
#

the best is the 9800X3D, follows closly by the 78500X3D, then 7950X3D

#

the 7900X3D is more of a productivity CPU, but will be good all the same

nocturne pawn
#

I probably shoulda made this thread b4 buying 😔

north zodiac
nocturne pawn
#

Nahh, ill just change parts myself.

shell sail
#

Though that would definitely be after Christmas

frozen flare
#

with the motherboard there is a catch to where you should install another M.2 drive, so when/if you decide to do so, ask for guidance in #762988481634369556

nocturne pawn
#

Yhh, its getting delivered today

#

I mean, I can't complain too much

#

I'm upgrading from a ryzen 5, rtx 1070, 16 gb of ram

frozen flare
#

ah, the RAM from that rig won't work at all, not even fit in the new PC

#

best get a whole new kit

nocturne pawn
#

Fr?

#

Its a decade old pc

frozen flare
#

yeah, it's DDR4, the new system is DDR5

nocturne pawn
#

Ahhhh yhh

#

For reference

#

With the new build, would I be able to raytrace?

north zodiac
#

yes

frozen flare
#

when you get new RAM, this would be the best setup for a 64GB kit

north zodiac
#

only problem your pc would have is running new games since they require a ssd

frozen flare
#

IIRC they don't require it per se, but the load times will suck terribly, and they say it to avoid complaints

frozen flare
nocturne pawn
#

Oof. I didn't think about that

frozen flare
#

you could reinstall windows with a tiny11 install, but even with tiny11 being a diet win11, you're still looking at about 50-70GB gone from the get

nocturne pawn
#

So just storage and ram

#

Money isn't too much of an issue

#

How hard would it be to install a 2nd ssd myself?

frozen flare
#

those are defo your biggest limiting factors, I am not a fan of the new AM5 motherbaords, but they're fine

#

watch the vid, it's quite easy

nocturne pawn
#

Gotcha

#

I feel goofy as hell

north zodiac
#

guess you at least have some big storage if you ever need to store anything

frozen flare
#

at least you take feedback on baord, unlike JuiceBox

nocturne pawn
#

What, people get aggressive or something?

frozen flare
nocturne pawn
#

Oh yh one last thing!

#

Will the pc serve me well for 3D rendering and intensive programs?

frozen flare
#

JuiceBox asks for advice, then promptly ignores it, and complains how it doesn't work

nocturne pawn
#

I'm a software engineer, need to know that my specs will support my work

frozen flare
#

the 12 cores will do you well for productivity, a 7950X3D would ahve been better, but also cost much more

nocturne pawn
nocturne pawn
frozen flare
#

even the admins here are done with them, and they have the patience of saints

#

and to be clear JuiceBox refers to one specific user you are blessed never to come across

nocturne pawn
#

I'll take your word for it

#

And I'll look into new ram and a 2nd ssd

#

You think it'll be extremely expensive btw?

#

Like, will I be expecting to spend over 200?

frozen flare
#

depends, 1-2TB m.2 drives aren't wildly expensive, 150-200GBP is normal enough for the drive

nocturne pawn
#

And ram?

dusty quarry
frozen flare
#

as for the RAM, that might be something to deal with later, as off the top of my head you're looking down the barrel of another 150-200 for a 64G B 6000MHz kit

nocturne pawn
#

Ughhhhh

#

Dammn

frozen flare
#

for now the 32GB 4800MHz is functional, just not ideal

nocturne pawn
#

Understood

#

So the ssd is a much higher priority

dusty quarry
#

Don't cheap out on the RAM. AMD CPU's do like the fast RAM

nocturne pawn
nocturne pawn
#

It rly pains me that I may be leaving processing power on the table

frozen flare
#

the biggest gaming impact is the 1% and .1% lows, they will drop noticably more

dusty quarry
#

Well, you live and you learn
In an ideal world you would have asked for advice before pulling the trigger. Now it's down to fixing just a couple of things
If you're in a rush and have the cash, those are easy fixes really

frozen flare
#

as for the work impact, it usually isn't so bad, capacity might hold you back, if at all

nocturne pawn
#

Bookmarked the link to the ssd and ill look into faster ram

#

Ty for the advice, srsly.

#

I rly don't want to be selling myself short on this new pc

#

Still, one more thing

#

I had the notion in my head that, whatever mistakes I made with components

#

It would still be a monumental upgrade over a decade old pc

#

Realistically, is that like,

#

You know.

#

The case

#

Will it be A LOT more powerful than what I had

#

Or is the upgrade in how it'll run not as great as I expected

frozen flare
#

it will be, really, the 7900X3D while underwhelimg for gaming compared to the 7800X3D, will still be able to keep up with the best of them, the GPU is a lovely 1440p card, generally well able to do 100fps on high to ultra settings

nocturne pawn
#

Bloody awesome

#

I couldn't run cyberpunk on even medium with the 1070.

#

Anyway, you have a good day man. Ty again for all the component advice. Its invaluable dude

shell sail
#

For payment we will need to see pics in #1128254319859355698 🙂

nocturne pawn
#

Like a side by side of my decade old and my new

shell sail
#

Just the new one will be fine :), unless you really want to show both

frozen flare
#

here's a RAM kit that should work well
