#i REALLY want a rainbow boa, but i’m also a big rat lover and can’t get over the idea of having to f

Sadly they’re too strong for reptilinks, but if you want the colors… and non rodent diet, maybe a blue tongue skink is for yoy?
I want a rainbow boa, but the only store nearby that has them has baby babies and I’m afraid to get one that’ll be the most sensitive thing to humidity.
Regardless of age, if you are having this much hesitation at the very thought of trying to feed it, I don’t think it is a good first choice in terms of snakes. @shell kestrel would be able to speak more to that.
not the thought of trying to feed it, just specifically feeding rats. i can feed things like pinkies and fish just fine, it’s only the rats i need to get over
honestly, deal with it. It's the circle of life.
and a rainbow boa is probably not a good first snake either
it sounds harsh but I am 100% sincere in that if you want a snake, you must learn to deal with rats that are already dead
There are a few different rainbow boas so narrowing down which one you want is going to be helpful. When I first started looking into getting a snake I had a friend show me how she feeds her snakes and the one that I was “adopting” from her I actually fed. I wasn’t too fond about it at first but it’s no different than you eating chicken, cow, turkey, fish, etc. They have to eat and so do you. Rats and mice are humanely euthanized for feeders and if you want to make sure they are in a healthy environment as they grow then find a local feeder breeder and purchase from them after learning how they euthanize and how their care is as they grow to size. For me how I got over it was just doing it with the knowledge that it needs to eat otherwise it’ll starve. Whether it’s in captivity or in the wild they need to eat.
maybe try an egg-eating snake?
They are hard to come by CB, hard to find eggs for, and multiply that by 20 for babies.
Oh, I’ve seen quite a few for sale in the UK so I wasn’t aware of this
Yes in the US, ~85% are imported
Oh good to know. I had no idea lol
You can do garter snakes. They come in a variaty of morphs, actively display themselves, and will eat both raw/live fish and other non-rodent diets if you plan it just right
I mean, look at this melanistic boi
red sided are cuter imo
All snakes are valued and cute.
Yes but there are some that are cuter than others.
Not all snakes are created equal.
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
but yes Hognoses are best.
Personally have a Brazilian rainbow
He was my first snake and I had rats before I got into snakes
(I know weird)
I still love rats and have two pet ratties.
So personally don’t see anything wrong with going for a rainbow boa as your first snake. You just gotta do the research just like any pet
As for being scared/ not liking to touch dead rats or see them idk
Everyone has their own experiences and sometimes you just either have to find someway that works for you to get over that hurdle or like some people are saying don’t get a snake
It’s a weekly part of caring for a snake that eats rodents so if you can’t you can’t. Sometimes ya just gotta go into a reptile store and maybe admire but not get one yourself.
i- i’m literally asking how to get over it, im not dumb i know i need to feed them rats. sounds like you’re just very judgey of people who don’t naturally love feeling rodents.
If I may have a suggestion, I'd honestly say it helps to readjust your point of view, think of it in a positive light, a really fresh piece of meat for your beloved animal! I feed my cat a raw whole prey diet sometimes and I'll admit, especially having pet rats, it made me squeamish to see frozen rats at first! But the more you handle it and treat the bodies with respect, the more comfortable you become. It just takes practice!
honestly the only way to face a fear is to just work through it slowly. do you have a friend that has a snake that u could feed one time, to get used to it?
Now after getting used to it, I actually love rats even more and their ecological niche in the environment. When you think about it, you're replicating one of the most amazing and spectacular acts in nature! Read books about anatomy (or websites!) And be in awe of the little creatures that help our other creatures thrive. The natural cycle is one of the reasons I think some of us keep animals in the first place! :) I hope you can come to appreciate this fascinating process that happens around us all day, everyday, all the time! Think of all the creatures in the world, living in this incredible symbiosis!
Pardon the nature nerding, I've been there but the more I've learned and experienced, the less these types of things bother me. Give it time! Sorry for my novel lol
kialna wasn’t being rude, it’s just the truth, if you want a snake that has to consume rodents, you just have to get over it through whatever method is best for you, none of us can tell you what the best method is for you but as the person above said changing your perspective is an option
i’m asking for advice from people who have experienced this this
It's a very natural process for first time snake owners to experience. You can love a species and have trouble feeding prey items because of it. I got my college roommate into reptiles, and the only pets he had before then were rodents. He even wanted a hamster before I introduced him to the reptile hobby. Essentially, I put two labels on each thing. One is a domesticated rat. It's a companion, alive, and you're responsible for its care. It deserves the same amount of thought as any other animal in your care. On the other hand, a frozen thawed feeder is not a companion. It was bred exclusively for sustaining captive reptiles.
feeder geckos
i think that would be worse to get over lol
atleast for me
i understand there’s nothing wrong with the snake eating it, but seeing/touching them dead is upsetting
then snake probably isn’t for u
i’m asking how to get passed it
hmm
well
there’s no better way to get over ur fears than to face them
cause there’s no getting passed feeding rodents to most snakes
yeah that’s why i’m asking how to mentally get over it, not how to make the snake get over it lols
wel like I said there’s really no other way than to face it and just get it over with
you’ll quickly become accustomed to doing so
is their a place i can go to do it with someone else’s snake? so i can get over it before getting one
feeding snakes?
uhh
not really
unless u have like a local pet store that somehow would allow you to do so
i probably wouldnt reccomend a rainbow boa for begginers
there humidity requirement is ridicoulous and arent hardy if it gets too low
id get an older one which are more hardy and a misting system, plus i’ve had other reptiles that need humidity
