I wonder how you manage to get a bunch of old trains into a building like that if it’s not like how they moved 576 down the street

#

And how that would be allowed in the area it’s in

silver storm
#

Asian it having an X-wing and starship Enterprise

void halo
#

I'm not sure what Asia has to do with it, but that does sound awesome!

tranquil plume
#

We surprised @silver storm with a trip on the Acela from DC to NYC for the night. He’s about to just spontaneously combust in the seat across from me. 😂

silver storm
#

I almost did

silver storm
#

I got in the cab

void halo
silver storm
#

Is that bad?

#

None of it has notches

void halo
#

There are notches on the throttle (atleast on the locomotive I drive) I just don't like the ergonomics of the desktop style controls.

silver storm
#

Oh ok. I’m guessing they don’t feel good to move?

void halo
#

Nah they're just awkward. And they can be hard to move just one notch.

olive finch
#

I wish I had thought to take pics of it all when I was in France. Trains were really nice (when they arrived and were actually in service).

silver storm
#

What’s france like? I’ve always wanted to go

tranquil plume
silver storm
void halo
#

France is a beautiful country with many amazing things to see and so much history, and it has the misfortune of being inhabited by the French.

olive finch
#

Mais non, just the parisians

#

The people in smaller cities are mostly really nice, but villages and the country are SUPER.

void halo
#

The small towns were pretty decent. Paris was not my cup of tea.

silver storm
#

I hope I get to go sometime. Sounds like fun

pulsar trench
#

My 2 experiences with the French have been a Parisian and a farmer.

The Parisian treated me like I was dirt. The Farmer and I both geeked out about Diesel engines while I fixed his rental truck.

tranquil plume
#

I spent three weeks in southern France living with a French family when I was 16. Everyone I met was really friendly and awesome.

#

Haven’t been to Paris. Only Parisian I can remember was a sub we had my senior year of high school who was horrified when I told the class asshole to “mangez moi” in the middle of class one day.

wooden cove
#

You spent 3 weeks in France going to school??

tranquil plume
#

No, I spent three weeks in France between school years, and the next year we happened to have a Parisian sub for a while. 😝

wooden cove
#

Ah, Ok. I did wonder, seeing as there was a war on and all.

tranquil plume
#

😝

#

(Ironically the war was actually involved.)

void halo
#

Oh i get it, you're implying he's very old.

silver storm
#

they're retiring, or at least getting rid of, my favorite locomotive. I havent really seen it yet

tranquil plume
eager sparrow
#

Surely he has some Facebook group with where it is

tranquil plume
#

Well hey, don’t let reality stand in the way of your guesses. 😝

silver storm
#

It doesnt work like that. there is no schedule, and nobody ever posts in those groups anymore. they wont let me back in the S&NA North Sub group after i accidentally left which is the only group i got real updates. All i have now really is the railcam

#

I do know there are 3 of them already parked in Waycross, but i dont know where any of the others are

#

and even then thats an enormous yard, you probably cant see them without either breaking in or flying a drone over the place, which is allowed

silver storm
#

And plus there was 10 of them to start with, but with those three not getting assigned to trains and who knows how many others in maintenance, they’re extremely hard to find

silver storm
#

yeah there aare multiple drone videos of it

#

also the new CSX Heritage unit, the seaboard system heritage unit that came out a couple days ago #1982 came through town today. sadly we missed it but i saw it on the railcam

untold edge
#

Don’t know about us laws but I doubt that one is allowed to fly a drone above active trains or tracks.
Would be quite a hefty fine here. Endangerment of public transport or something.

#

Be careful with that Trainboi.

My Nashville & Eastern livery I made for the SD40. In real life it’s a B40-7 but this is the closest to that in the game

silver storm
#

My GP40 looks lonely I should get it a friend

void halo
#

GP40 is all you need. Great units.

silver storm
void halo
#

No way those are all cut in.

silver storm
#

they dont cut them in?

#

im upset CSX got rid of them

void halo
#

Well they'd be cut in with their brake lines and probably their compressors. I meant to that they wouldn't all be set to run, or online. No more than 18 powered axles in a consist, and since those are each 6 axle units, only 3 of them could be set to run.

silver storm
#

Well we just saw a train with five engines. 2 ES44AH’s leading , a couple of SD40-2s and weirdly enough an Amtrak P42DC trailing so I’m guessing those weren’t on at all except the two up front GE’s

void halo
#

Most likely

silver storm
void halo
#

That's pretty close. And damn clipping along!

silver storm
#

That isn’t close at all compared to how close I’ve been. It’s always a crazy feeling

#

Short trains are more difficult to handle than longer ones.

void halo
# wooden cove ELI5

A short train gets up and down grades more quickly and spends less time in curves in the rail. A longer train going through twisty or hilly territory is spread out with some parts going up hill and some going down, so it balances itself and runs pretty constant. Plus it has more brakes. A short train could be all going uphill at once or all going downhill at once and that makes it more difficult to control. The worst trains to run are short and heavy trains like sulphur or rock.

That’s pretty mature thinking. 👍
You still have a lot of passion for trains and I can assure you that there’s a f&@&-ton of interesting jobs around that industry.
Jobs that take you trackside every now and then are really nice, you get to see something.
Can recommend to get some sort of electrical engineering degree and take a look at signaling engineer or safety engineer positions.

My to-be-brother-in-law works for a big consulting company in the UK, he plans and evaluates future track and interlock building projects around the world. Currently oversees a new project in estonia for a couple of weeks.

He says it’s like playing with a model railway in the largest possible scale, 1:1.

Well, yes and no. The work it takes to develop the new features does cost money, so they can’t just do it for free. They have to pay the programmers and testers and project managers and whoever else. But calling it a whole new game every time they do it isn’t entirely honest either. It’s one of those things that doesn’t have a perfect solution.

silver storm

especially the livery thing

given how many Sheds there are in the UK, and how many liveries have not been implemented, either by Game or 3rd party

Wheelsensor, that’s used to make level crossings and sections in railroads work. That basic sensor for all rail operations in most countries.
It detects and counts train wheels, determines speed and direction of travel and verifies that all cars are accounted for in simple terms.

silver storm
#

So a defect detector?

untold edge
#

Not really. You know how track sections work, like only one train can ever be in a section and the next one needs to be cleared for the signals to go green?
Those sensors get the required data for the interlocking to work.

#

@void halo or @silver storm , I just saw a train with 3 of the engines, but it looked like only one was pulling them. Are the others just there as a backup or are they being moved.

void halo
#

Long answer: Sometimes a train goes one direction empty or light weight, or the grade is mostly downhill and doesn't need a lot of power to move it, so they'll cut-out the other locomotives to save on fuel. But when it comes back it may be loaded so it's heavy, or the return trip is uphill, so they'll need the extra power to move the train.
And always the brakes on a train are controlled by air, and more locomotives means more compressors means more air, so even if the locomotives aren't pulling they're still supplying air.
It is also l possible that they just need to move those units from one place to another, and when that happens they'll be marshalled on the head end of the train.

wheat oar
#

Ah ok

silver storm
#

@void halo are railfans distracting if they’re just standing around taking pictures?

void halo
#

I'm always on the lookout for anything or anyone near the tracks, just to be sure it's not a hazard. People walking along the tracks with their heads down, vehicles about to run crossings, anything parked near the tracks. An engineer I worked with once tackled a guy who was walking head-down with headphones on straight down the middle of a track. Had no idea a train was coming straight at him.

tranquil plume
#

We were actually pretty far away. Someone was just feeling sensitive or something.

void halo
#

I'm pretty confident you guys know better. Honestly, it's more amusing than distracting. I can think of way more distracting things I've seen on the rail.

silver storm
#

Yeah we know better. I won’t get within 10 feet of a moving train

#

Psycho won’t let me either

void halo
#

I aim for atleast 30 feet away if I'm doing a roll-by, and if I can stand a little further away all the better. But I'm not looking for a good shot, I'm just inspecting the train as it goes by. So long as you're not trespassing or so close that I'm worried it's dangerous i've never been bothered by people spectating.

tranquil plume
silver storm

Question for trying to do train spotting/taking pictures of them. Is there anyway to really track trains coming through a town. Talking Union pacific cargo trains and not passenger ones

silver storm
#

No not really. The best way is to just go to some railroad tracks and wait. It can take between 30 seconds to 2 hours

#

Eventually you start to learn the patterns and times that there are more trains. Like in my area most trains come through in the afternoon or morning but least at noon-1pm.

tranquil plume
subtle plover
#

Ah thank y'all both. Yeah I've got a UP rail line through my family's farm town and it would be nice to get some pics. Also is there like a minimum distance you legally have to be from the train tracks?

tranquil plume
#

Theoretically you’re not supposed to be on railroad property. Generally they don’t care as long as you maintain a safe distance from the tracks. We usually stay at least ten feet away and rarely have an issue. Inside that close they get a little antsy sometimes. @silver storm had an engineer tell him over the radio a few months back that his tripod was too close to the tracks.

subtle plover

What radios do they use?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrlrbfGZo2k The first part of this talk is incredibly technical, but I promise it pays off. Corporate corruption, reverse engineering and a great hero v. villain story.

Actual talk is about 40 minutes long, the rest is Q&A

Reverse engineering a train to analyze a suspicious malfunction

We've all been there: the trains you're servicing for a customer suddenly brick themselves and the manufacturer claims that's because you've interfered with a security system.

This talk will tell the story of a serie...

You'll get a kick out of this Dobby.

On my commute home from work I drive over train tracks, well there is a bunch of chemical and manufacturing plants there so they have a train dock and there is always a train there on Wednesdays and Fridays.

It's fun because when you stop to let the train pass when it is time for it to the leave the engineer always plays something on the electric horn or PA. I don't know trains much outside steam locomotives.

silver storm
#

Oh wow, that sounds really interesting. I didn’t know trains have outside PA systems
