So yeah that bag will last you forever

limber bison
#

I’ve tidied the tails under the pillion seat, it’s tight in there but it’ll work!

limber bison
#

Gave her a wash now that I’m fully cleared again, got any leftover mud out of the exhaust heat shield and got all the garage dust off her. Just needs a wax now and I don’t have any of that around here yet.

heady plover
#

For wax I like Turtle Wax ceramic coating. Not too expensive and did well in Project Farm's test

limber bison
#

Ooooh might have to try it

heady plover
#

Chain fell off my GS today

#

Luckily, it happened right as I pulled out of my neighborhood. So I pushed it over to a house where I know a car guy lives, he was working on his Z in his driveway. Left it there while I walked home and got tools, came back, broke the chain off and pushed it home

#

Let this be a lesson to you all, replace your chains before they hit 16,000 miles

limber bison
#

I gotta find out what my chain replacement period is, I’m about 900km off the 5k service

obtuse axle
heady plover
#

TBF I have been neglecting chain maintenance lately

heady plover
#

Typical is 12-15k mi but I've heard of some fellas getting 20k outta a chain

limber bison
obtuse axle
#

There's a U shaped brush available that makes cleaning a breeze. Check it out

steady lance
limber bison
#

That’s for a MTB but it’d work

obtuse axle
#

3M chain cleaner is awesome. Spray it and crud will start falling off the chain by itself in a minute

As for lubing, I find spraying it the night before a long ride seems to make it last longer than usual

limber bison
#

I’ve got Maxima Chain Wax, seems to do a pretty good job, sticks to the chain well.

#

What I need to do is get a paddock stand, idle the bike in first then clean the chain that way, blast it with the water blaster, then wax the chain

limber bison
#

Man if I had the bike to ride that

#

80% gravel, one of the most beautiful roads in the north island. No one lives in there, the area was the hub for the Maori Rebellions of WW1 and 2. Mainly coz it’s damn hard to find anything in there.

obtuse axle
obtuse axle
limber bison
obtuse axle
#

That's the fun part 😛

heady plover
#

I just spin the rear tire in neutral, in whichever direction is away from the sprocket so I can't hurt my finger

#

chuckles in center stand

#

Some owners manuals recommend using a hose

#

I use maxima chain cleaner to clean and gear oil to lube

#

smells awful but works fjne, many older owners manuals recommend a heavy motor oil anyway

#

And it's like six bucks for a huge bottle

obtuse axle
#

Otherwise, totally agree!

fair silo
#

I use the maxima cleaner and chain lube as well. I also don't put the bike in gear while cleaning the chain, I just spin the wheel with my hand.

balmy canyon
#

That reminds me: don't be the guy who loses a finger trying to clean the chain by running the engine. Your bike should be off and in neutral when doing anything with the chain.

heady plover
#

Got her apart today, but still waiting for parts

#

(buddy came over to pick up my birthday gift for his son, had him do some of the ugga dugga work)

limber bison
#

Tonight I learnt the sidestand can freeze in place. Was riding home on the motorway doing ~130 (keeping up with the cars, feels much safer) got home and had to kick the side stand like it was a 2 stroke side stand on a cold morning to get it down

obtuse axle
#

It actually froze or it dirt jam it up? I never faced this issue in sub freezing temps

limber bison
#

Dunno. It was a lot harder to put down than normal

fair silo
#

Interesting. I've never had mine freeze up either. But then, different bikes different problems. One thing to watch out for is on a hot day your kickstand sinking into the asphalt!

limber bison
#

It was already past dew point last night so the bike was wet anyway, and it was 1° ambient, boots were iced up as well.

fair silo
#

Brrr! I don't think I've ever ridden when it was that cold

heady plover
limber bison
balmy canyon
#

I used to ride to work and home in 24F weather on a BMW F800GT. The kickstand never had an issue. Those Germans know how to handle the cold weather.

limber bison
#

It was definately weird, hasn't happened before or since

dense needle
#

It's finally happening, I bought an SV650
Dealer is gonna outfit it with some framesliders but by the end of the week it'll be mine abongoblob

limber bison
#

Whey!

#

Congratulations man!

dense needle
#

Thanks man! I'm so happy that I can start riding again so soon

limber bison
#

I had some bad family news come in yesterday, went for a nice run up the motorway tonight and back. Head is much much clearer now.

Went to a maintenance course last night since the local council paid for it, interesting way to get the back wheel off the ground in a pinch

obtuse axle
# limber bison Went to a maintenance course last night since the local council paid for it, int...

Not sure if the exhaust is built strong enough to do that. Better to ask someone to lean the bike on the side stand

If it's just for spinning the wheel to clean/lube, these things come in handy: https://www.amazon.in/Grand-Pitstop-Portable-Lubrication-Replacement/dp/B01M8NRO56/

limber bison
#

Oh paddock stands are absolutely much better, but if the exhaust is secured under the back of the bike

balmy canyon
#

For those of you who live near Australia, check out dynomoto. They make a really cool stand that can move in any direction.

limber bison
#

Aussie? You mean NZ’s West Island 😝

heady plover
hazy glen
#

Really wouldn't recommend raising the rear like that. Frequent use will increase chances of fast fracture occurring and added fatigue on the fixing points of the exhaust .

obtuse axle
balmy canyon

Is it because he's driving on the wrong side of the road?

obtuse axle

He's driving correctly 😄

#

Just coz you're on the right side of the road doesn't mean you're right

😛

balmy canyon

If he's not on the right side, he must be on the wrong one. There are only two options. 😁

nova token
limber bison
limber bison
#

At least bike models don’t change for left and right drives

#

We only have our own models for lams

balmy canyon
#

That is nice. It'd be weird if they swapped the throttle/brake and clutch around. But it would free your right hands for the motorcycle wave.

limber bison
#

We tend to just wave anyway?

#

Our version down here is just lifting the two fingers that would be on the front brake

#

Personally I tend to do a salute kinda thing off the helmet

obtuse axle
heady plover
#

And the license plate mounts

poor India and Phillipine riders with those massive plates

limber bison

limber bison
obtuse axle
obtuse axle
#

The front is even smaller

limber bison
#

You guys have a front plate?

obtuse axle
#

Yup

limber bison
#

We have that on the back

obtuse axle
#

Nice spoiler you got there 😛

limber bison
#

😝

#

In the wild, think the whole rear assembly is kinda ugly

obtuse axle
#

On cars it's massive!!

limber bison
#

Jesus Christ

#

Those are our main size, but we can do Euro, American, Japanese

#

As long as the numbers match it’s generally fine, as long as it’s on the approved sized list

obtuse axle
#

Nice

#

But good thing is we don't need to "renew" the plates every year or whatever like in US. New vehicles are good for 15 years

#

Thereafter inspections every 5 years

limber bison
#

We’re good for 5 on the new ones, 1 on the not so new and 6 months on the really old ones

#

Mines an 03 so not quite old enough to be every 6 months

#

I think those are like mid eighties at the moment around here hahahah

obtuse axle
#

Haha mine's 05

#

Most bikes here have aesthetic mounting for the front plate

#

Then there's some like this

limber bison
#

Man that’s weird

#

Then again better than the old bikes

heady plover
#

and then there's this abomination

obtuse axle
#

Hey developed in India, for the world 😜

heady plover
#

Featuring camshafts with the hardness of paneer

obtuse axle

Now that's some eco friendly stuff right there

#

Jokes apart, what happened to the cam shafts?

limber bison

It’s a KTM

#

such as mine lol

obtuse axle
obtuse axle
brittle flame
#

which ktm is that?

obtuse axle
#

I knew the alternators used to go bad until they upgraded it years later

obtuse axle
#

Mine is a Duke 390, but same engine

limber bison
#

Didn’t they have a head gasket problem for a bit

obtuse axle
#

Yeah initially...needed re-application of the sealant

#

But this is still the longest I've had a bike for. I rebuilt the engine thrice on my previous bike. Did 84k in 5 years 😅

graceful cape
#

Ive tried the ninja 400 which was loads of fun, Im sure the single of the rc390 is even more fun if the roads here were better suited

heady plover
#

390 stock sounds like a lawnmower

#

You need a power commanderand exhaust to unlock its potential. Tuned very lean from the factory for emissions and A2 compliance

limber bison
#

All I know is my R3 sounds like an animal after a big ride….. can’t say the same for my mates on singles

heady plover
#

Also runs very hot. Often I would pull in for gas, fill up. then go to start the bike and get an overheat warning. Would have to wait an extra few minutes for it to passively cool.

Also straight up overheated on me twice in very slow traffic. It was liquid cooled but like riding an air cooled bike...

limber bison
#

Did it not have a fan?

heady plover
#

It had one small fan which did not stay on after you turned the bike off

limber bison
#

Ah. I think I might have to start idling for a few minutes when I stop on the bike now that it’s warming up again

heady plover
#

Your R3 has better design, no need to futz with it

limber bison
#

This is very true. It has two fans and man they can move some air

obtuse axle
#

The 390 & 200 can switch fan direction to blow air to the front when you're <11 kmph so that your legs don't get roasted. You can thank me for this 😜

Also when you first start the bike, when the temperature bar reads 1 bar, the fan comes on for a few secs so you know it's working

limber bison
#

Interesting

#

It takes a while for my bike to turn the fans on even stationary, was in 32° heat after a 3 hour ride sitting at a long light, took a good minute to turn on

obtuse axle
#

Depends on ambient temp and riding speed i guess. On my 200 the fan had failed and i only realised that when i took the bike inside the city traffic. In the highway you never need the fan

limber bison
#

Might be coz mine is so new, or the face the radiator is huge, but I can only get the fan on when I’m stationary and it’s gotta be like 28°C+

obtuse axle
#

The big radiator probably.

limber bison
#

Yeah it’ll do it

limber bison

Oil change tomorrow!

heady plover
#

KLR was particularly bad, which is part of why so many of them consume oil

limber bison
#

No leaks, the old filter had been put on way too tight and needed like 6 holes punched into it to get it off

heady plover
#

yeah dealerships usually put them on too tight in my experience. They don't want customers coming back complaining about loose filters

limber bison
#

Ah that makes sense

limber bison
#

Chain maintenance done…. Locked the front brake and balanced the bike

#

Really need to get on top of the chain maintenance hahah

hazy glen
obtuse axle
# hazy glen Or go shaft drive .

I miss maintenance free drives: coming from scooters to open chain bike, I was told I had to clean/lube the chain every 500km and I was like WTF

hazy glen
hazy glen

yep

#

just remember to turn it on, after leaving your drive if gravity fed 😉

limber bison
limber bison
obtuse axle
limber bison
#

I gotta refuel every 300km, then again I can got further than my mates on a tank so

balmy canyon
#

Also shaft and belt drives are super nice for easy maintenance and quiet rides.

limber bison
#

Nah jokes. I lifted the back wheel up just enough to spin the wheel

balmy canyon
#

I have a dynamoto storage stand, which allows me to rotate the rear wheel. I should probably learn how to clean a chain. This is the first chain bike I've had long enough to need to worry about it.

limber bison
#

I’m working on getting front and rear paddock stands before I need tyres, some mates and I are doing a charity ride from the top of the country to the bottom of the country next year so we’re really working on getting a maintenance pattern sorted

heady plover
limber bison
#

Even without a paddock stand it only takes about 5 mins

dense needle
#

First time cleaning the chain, it took longer for me to get it on the paddock stand, than to clean and lube the chain 🤣

It's a great bike.

limber bison

Next year I’m applying to the local trade school to do mechanical engineering, so I figure I probably won’t need too much dirt road capability and more just highway mile eating ability

Dude, that person must’ve been supppeerrrr confused.

#

“I just merged into a lane? Why did they flip me off?”

heady plover
#

One time a dad tried to merge into me with his teenage daughter in the car. He had the most sheepish look on his face lol

#

But my favorite was the time I was riding with a buddy - him on his ninja, me on my sumo - and we pulled up to a boomer couple's red Porsche convertible at a light. I whisper to my buddy over the Sena "Don't look over, but crouch down and rev your engine like you want to race. When the light goes green, sit straight up and take off at scooter speed."

They 100% took the bait, the dude peeled away tires screeching while it looked like we were totally ignoring them. As we passed the lady was roaring with laughter and the dude was terribly embarrased. We gave a finger-wag and a friendly wave lol

rich birch
#

I don’t bait people. They usually ask me and sometimes I’ll say yes, but never commit. Other times I’ll pretend I can’t hear them.

#

But, I will gladly floor it for someone if they just want to hear my exhaust. I visit a Starbucks in a strip mall often, and I guess this guy has heard/seen my car a couple of times. He was in the passenger seat and when we got to the red light he just started yelling, “Bro! I love your car, I hear you coming down the street and I’ll run over to watch you drive by…” and all this other nonsense. I literally didn’t get a word in. Then he asked me to floor it when it turned green and I complied.

#

Guy screamed, “thanks bro!” Then made a left….

balmy canyon
#

I once had GT-R pull up next to me and rev on the 520 bridge between Seattle and Bellevue. There was no traffic in front of me and no place for cops on the bridge. I was on a BMW K 1300 S, so it was not a fair competition.

heady plover

heady plover
#

rich birch
#

Oh, I see what you mean

heady plover
#

The road there is a bit twisty, and the junction has access to some neat stuff, like an abandoned silver mine

rich birch
#

Cars go out there or is it mostly bikes?

heady plover
#

Bike to some areas. The off road four wheel stuff goes to the dunes nearby

#

Road cars sometimes hang out in the canyons in the mountains but those roads have gotten jammed up with hikers etc these past ten years

heady plover

rich birch
heady plover

rich birch
heady plover

GPS coverage is fine, Cell coverage is hit or miss, even Verizon has some dead zones.

rich birch
#

Okay, cool. I’ve noticed GPS coverage on suches drops off sometimes.

heady plover

I've heard of that happening near military installations due to GPS jamming

#

There's a particular Playa in California where people are explicitly warned to bring a compass because GPS can fail out there due to USAF activity

Basically always assume you're gonna crash and gear up accordingly. No exposed skin either

balmy canyon
# fiery hawk Atgatt?

To expand on what Niro said: full faced ECE or Snell rated helmet, abrasion resistant jacket and pants (or suit) with joint armor and a back protector--not just the foam that comes with the jacket, and dedicated motorcycle boots and gloves.

I'm personally not an atgatt person, if I'm just putting around town I'm often helmet gloves and my shorter riding boots

I don't see the risk calculus for wearing that level of gear for a journey I'm equally comfortable doing on a bicycle

I’ve been meaning to update you, tickets are booked and car is booked. But, there’s been a change in plans. We’re going to drive on some crazy roads in Cali instead. As suspected, getting to Utah was becoming a logistical nightmare. So, not sending my car, and booked a Porsche instead.

Although, I might still make the trip myself. We’ll see how much time is available. Thanks for the suggestion though. This wouldn’t have happened without your recommendation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_of_Pearls_(Indian_Ocean)
I guess it's an American term for the CCP effort to establish a presence, and eventually control over, the Indian Ocean.

The String of Pearls is a geopolitical hypothesis proposed by United States political researchers in 2004. The term refers to the network of Chinese military and commercial facilities and relationships along its sea lines of communication, which extend from the Chinese mainland to Port Sudan in the Horn of Africa. The sea lines run through sever...
