Hey guys! For the past couple months, ive been using HP ProDesk mini PCs for all my hosting. However, I came across an HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 for only 75$ on ebay, and got it for 65$.

The advertised specs: 2x Xeon E5-2690v3 (12c/24t ea) & 144 Gb DDR4

However, the seller came across an issue and gave me a replacement instead, which has 2x Xeon E5-2690v4 (14c/28t ea) & 196 Gb DDR4!

Im looking forward to getting some SSDs (pls leave recommendations) and getting Ubuntu server up and running!

RIP your ears. I'd put Proxmox on it and run VMs, no sense in wasting all those resources on just a single Ubuntu installation

If you plan to use hardware raid take enterprise SAS SSDs. They’re expensive but designed for overuse. Otherwise you’ll just burn the consumer SSDs rather quickly.

don't use hardware raid.

#

what type of raid card is in it? if possible flash it to IT Mode or get the raid card that has a IT mode available. whats your budget on storage? and what caddies size is the server. 2.5" or 3.5"

caddies are 2.5in

Why would enterprise servers ship with raid cards?

# raven quest Why would enterprise servers ship with raid cards?

So honestly they did from a time when they were using 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch hard drives and the access time of the dries of course is pretty slow so they would raid the drives into eight port or 16 Port raid cards which allowed them to create a hardware raid set that you could boot and run vmware, xcp-ng, Windows server or hyper-v etc from

#

So these days really you're better off especially if you're going to use ZFS to deactivate the hardware raid card firmware that does raid and run it in IT Mode. Many videos on YouTube on how to do just that. So this allows ZFS file system to directly see the hardware and ensure that every right gets done correctly without any cash involved which RAID cards normally have

#

And just fyi, I turn it off for not only SSD drives but for hard drives as well

#

It's not an absolute requirement with ZFS but it's highly recommended by the ZFS team

I still use it personally. But for ZFS ofc not.

Outside of selling to friends it seems hard to compete with $3/mo for a VM somewhere TBQH

Also most people who would want to host something in my school most likely wouldnt have the knowledge or resources to host it themselves

#

They would just want to run no questions asked

I looked at them over a week ago, but I might have the opportunity to get a rack for free, and I am just waiting on that
