#Committed to fandom or open to other wikis?

Hi, this is just a suggestion from someone who's been involved in wikis. I hope it's ok to share!
I am an admin on a wiki for modding Stardew Valley. At one point, we used to use fandom, before a number of issues led us to move (first to Miraheze, then to wiki.gg). Our experience with wiki.gg has been phenomenal, and they made the migration process super simple as they took care of everything and let us check out how everything looked for fine-tuning before the wiki was live.

Considering fandom has some controversial business practices, and that the site isn't super user-friendly, I figured I'd recommend wiki.gg since it works well for the modding Stardew Valley wiki SDVpufferheart https://wiki.gg/

wiki.gg

wiki.gg is a community of developers and editors creating the best possible experience for gamers looking for information on their favorite games

i want to +1 this suggestion because i had the same thought at first seeing fandom being used but didn’t feel comfortable bringing it up myself lol

@atomic meteor thoughts?

I don't have a strong preference either way, but I also don't know enough about wiki.gg to say, why that alternative in particular

hidden blade
#

That's fair! For the Stardew Valley modding wiki, the fact that wiki.gg is free (with non-intrusive ads) and they would handle everything on their end to recreate the wiki were the 2 big deciding factors

fandom also has a very weird thing going on with censorship.. i'm not versed enough to explain it further but there are resources that go in depth on it. probably wouldn't affect the sunnyside wiki but they're just sort of a garbage corp all around

I'm surprised miraheze didn't work for you but i second wiki.gg

<@&904508370856316958> why don't we put it to a vote on whether we want to stick with the Fandom wiki or migrate to Wiki.gg, which seems to be a preferred or at least acceptable alternative. Respond with 🇫 if you want to stick with Fandom, 🇼 if you'd rather migrate over to Wiki.gg, or 🇮 if you want more information about the difference between the two/ info about why we should move at all/ info about why we should move to wiki.gg specifically

If you want more votes, a new thread with a poll might get more views.

nearly anything but fandom would be great...

I've said it before but I'll say it again, Rainy and I fully support moving away from Fandom.

fwiw with regards to the vote: it seemed like only the Wiki team was supposed to vote, but then I saw someone without the wiki role voted, so I voted too 😶

#

if the vote was open to anyone, that was unclear

So we have 10 votes for a migration and no other votes, plus an endorsement from the devs to migrate off of Fandom. If we are going to migrate, should we hold off on making edits until the migration has happened?

Speaking from when we made the migration for the Stardew Valley modding wiki: there's a whole process to submit the request (linked at the bottom of the page in my original post) and the wiki.gg folks reach out. Depending on their workload, it may be a bit before they can start working on it. People can continue making changes in fandom during that time.

While they're recreating the wiki, they had told us the site syncs at least once a day, and can refresh one last time before the wiki.gg version goes live. So people can keep making edits on fandom right up until the new wiki.gg site goes live

Looks like we have a consensus to move to wiki.gg. I'll reach out to them to start that process. In the meantime, everyone can feel free to keep editing the wiki and I'll keep everyone up to date about what's happening with the migration

#

Another pro of moving to wiki.gg, we should hopefully be able to get rid of the "Game" part of the wiki name and just be the SunnySide Wiki we always should have been (if it weren't for a certain NBC show) 😂

#

Hey @hidden blade since you have experience in this, looking at their form for requesting the migration, I'm wondering if it might make sense to give ourselves maybe a 1 week countdown to put some last minute stuff into the wiki before we submit the request? Specifically I'm thinking about how we have some key mechanics pages that are created but are actually blank, but maybe we should get something down on them before we submit the request. Do you think it makes a difference?

Got a quick response!

atomic meteor
#

That was quick! In that case, I'll go ahead and submit the migration request tonight

Once the wiki.gg is up I'll move over the changelog page I'm maintaining too

atomic meteor
#

I've submitted the migration request. I'll report back when I've got a response from wiki.gg

atomic meteor
#

Just to update folks, I've heard from wiki.gg and the migration should be happening soon. Don't have an exact date tho

atomic meteor
#

Update 2: Hey folks, the migration to wiki.gg has happened. Unfortunately, some things didn't translate well and the wiki currently isn't as functional or presentable as it could be. Right now, access to the wiki is locked until it's ready to be published for public access. @outer cradle and I are trying to use this time of the wiki not technically being publicly accessible to fix some of the things that didn't translate and build out some of the key missing pages and structures. Once that housekeeping is done, we're going to make a more official announcement about the new wiki and open it for public access. So please bare with us while we're working on this

I got lots of data to dump on the wiki once its ready 😅

Any update to this? I've been answering questions here that could probably be answered through a wiki and had a couple people mention how helpful a good wiki would be. Don't want to rush it too much, just looking for any idea of a timeline. Or if you need help, Im glad to give it as well

If there's anything the dev team can do to help with the transition, let us know. (I've dabbled in website dev.)
