@ebon lodge
Also, think about what you like about the card and the deck.
What about Syr Konrad is enticing?
i just like konrad because when hes in the field, theres so many ways to trigger his ability without me doing actions
opponent sacs a creature for value, ping everyone
self mill? ping
loot? ping
So as a controlly engine. Sounds like you might want to just passively amp up the control? What's your budget?
im fine with up to 100
Okay, so no Chains of Mephistopheles
the deck is around 60 rn
Oh, you meant total, ya?
i mean i own a lot of the cards already, but id have to check which ones id need to buy
yea
budget version of him
like idc if im not running crypt ghast
like i want more mana rocks that have utility attached to them, rather than just double my mana or playing a ton of rituals
Yeah, it sounds like making it a bit more group hate and/or staxy might be the way to go.
And then a lot of utility control/accel.
yea i prefer my decks to be more interactive rather than just try to force a win
yea gonna have to be more creative
The one thing I'd worry about is finding a balance between passive and active.
yea i just think konrad gets me passive damage while i focus on protection, removal, and stax ig
like im not trying to win turn 5
but i want to outlast the pod and have enough answers
tho idk if mono black budget is gonna be the type to do that
i dont love budget black draw
you know i never played around with henzie and he seems like a good commander to have konrad in
What sort of wincon do you think you want with Konrad?
im still pondering that question myself
like i think the mass removal and keeping him alive is good enough for the pods i play in
but its not a finisher
One card I could maybe call missing is [[tortured existence]]
sure exsang is one, but i dont want to just do torment of hailfire again
its a good card

yea i was considering putting in the imp
I think Dredge sorta fall under the quickly-boring category but it is also quite effective.
yea im just trying to think if i even really want to build around this commander still
like the card itself is good
So, for reference, this is my Syr Konrad but it's one I've had since Eldraine released https://moxfield.com/decks/EIZRWg0OoE6i7wdjEXnGWQ

never had this card do anything tbh
Same
Fair
5 mana, wait a turn, 1 person takes 3, eats removal at some point
I tend to play it very aggressively
[[smothering abomination]] is just better
if it was discard or sac instead of 3 life, then ok maybe
Eats removal is not "does nothing" tbf
talking about the value it gets from its ability
if you only get one trigger, its the same as a lightning bolt
I see it as "I got rid of an opponent's removal card, I dealt someone at least 3 (or each opponent some amount), probably did another 1 to each on its death, and might have gotten to swing in for 5 a few times, at which point
for the mid game where people are looking to wipe or get rid of threats, he just kinda bites it
ive never had it even deal combat damage to someone
typically he just gets blown up if the board is empty or the board is full and you know the rest
Yeah, it just depends on the game plan. I think nowadays people will tend to remove it, but I don't see that as a bad thing.
i mean its fine, most things can and will get removed
But yeah, if Konrad is feeling meh overall, it might make more sense to shift.
its just even if he is left alone, its passable, but not nearly amazing of an effect for a 5cmc dude
yea i think im just a little tired of making mono black decks
like i play haunt of hightower, krrik, konrad
It's harder to not fall into deckbuilding traps with mono-black.
ive been on hiatus since new ixalan set so i definitely dont feel like my deck building intuition is the same anymore
I've been building on a budget then going into ostensibly B2 games and seeing people easily remove players from the game on turn 3/4. The format culture nowadays is somewhat dispiriting — too many people pulled down into the abyss of optimization and homogeneity. The overwhelming majority of Commander decks I see feel lame and unimaginative and it's hard to keep that from reflecting badly on the deckbuilders rather than on WotC and the various other promoters of optimization as "better".
well for years im pretty sure people just use edhrec to build their decks so its all just generic value and finishers
makes every deck look and feel the same
but yea if B2 is supposed to be roughly mid power and people are dying turn 3-4, someone is trolling
like if i make a deck with the intention of playing in mid power tables, i dont make it so i can just destroy someone quickly and then get blasted by the other 2
The problem is that the bracket system got destroyed by WotC — it wasn't ever intended to be a power scale but WotC and the CFP didn't understand the format.
(or didn't care)
you want to kill everyone somewhat evenly so you arent archenemied
yea idk
when i used to be a mod in a edh server years ago, we enforced our own power rules
but ofc that didnt stop really anyone from ruining pods
because power is ofc subjective and how it runs irrespective of its power matters as well
the culture is more important than any system or definition
The most reliable is to make leagues with very strict price and construction rules, then enforce being good to each other.
if we could shun out the people ruining pods like Mass Land Destruction players, then things would be a lot better
but people tolerate mismatching powers because they give people the benefit of the doubt when they shouldnt
MLD is fine IMO if people consent to it. It's not really the boogeyman people make it out to be and a lot of the attitude against it is what gets the social-casual players into the worse cultures of optimization to begin with. "Slower is bad so optimize to make it fast"
i would be fine with MLD if it was more widely accepted so decks would reflect that an armageddon is even a possibility in a game
but most people dont want to deal with it
because their decks are stupid simic value decks that durdle for 53 years
people prefer their decks fast and powerful rather than resilient
some decks can withstand 5 boardwipes, some decks dont recover ever past turn 5-7
The thing is those decks do better against MLD. The people who don't like it usually fall into two camps:
- Sheep — "I don't like it because it's popular not to like it."
- Agency, especially against toxic play — "I don't like it because people play it badly and it removes my agency."
ive tried playing MLD before and i could never get it past rule zero
Yeah because most people are sheep.
i wasnt even asking for armageddon, it was fall of the thran
maybe one day, lands will stop being so sacred and decks will just be built to recover from land removal
like even restore balance, people dont want to play against it
Used to be that people just asked that if someone was going to shut down lands, they win quickly. But the attitude shifted.
The custard is gone from most people's games and it's just sharks in murky high fructose corn syrup.
I had to remind people the other day that a B2 game was social-casual and expecting someone to have responded in a half second to a trigger before that trigger cast cards...
, Discard a creature card: Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
