#Riku of Many Problems - Modal Spellslinger!

I advise to read the Primer as it describes my approach to this deck and what is it's whole deal.
I like your list!
Thought I'd share mine so we can compare notes:
[[Seedling Charm]] might be a good cheap(both $ and mana) instant to add in there
very cool, but there are some things that in my opinion need a little tweaking
first of all [[!keeper of fables]]
i fell into this trap thinking it would draw card for each creature that dealt damage
nope, it says "one or more" so multiple creatures dealing damage still draw only one card
as a neat replacement for that [[!ohran frostfang]]
I was considering putting it in too but for now it's not in the deck (that might change tho)
I’m actually replacing it for [[Balor]] so I have a “modal” creature in all three colors. Deck doesnt really do too much attacking unless Riku can safely get in for damage.
Creature — Demon
Flying
Whenever Balor attacks or dies, choose one or more. Each mode must target a different player.
• Target opponent draws three cards, then discards three cards at random.
• Target opponent sacrifices a nontoken artifact.
• Balor deals damage to target opponent equal to the number of cards in their hand.
5/5
Balor's great, but shines the brightest in sacrifice decks. Also, Frostfang answers your concern because, if you choose to give Riku trample, you can safely attack (trample + deathtouch = 1 dmg to blocker and rest goes to the face)
also you don't have to send Riku in, your bird tokens would do as fine
moving on
[[!avenger of zendikar]] is a popular wincon but it immidately comes in with a bright red sign "POINT REMOVAL HERE"
if you can take advantage of it the turn you cast it it's very much worth it
but there are some cool substitutes
for example [[!titan of industry]] is a huge body that immediately impacts the board
also it's a flavor win when it comes to deck theme (but doesn't trigger Riku)
one last thing to keep an eye on is [[!ojer pakpatiq]]
Riku likes his impulse draw so casting something from exile won't get rebound
I know it says that on the card but it's very easy to miss
I focused more on impulse draw and casting from exile so Ojer unfortunately didn't make the cut
BUT i'm not saying that "it's doing nothing and you should cut it too"
it's a very good card and it will greatly enhance your gameplay
surprisingly [[!Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot]] is a great tech to provide a similar effect
oh dear god
she has the same problem ojer has
"from your hand"
see, that's what I meant by saying "very easy to miss"
My issue is less with the “from your hand” aspect of it and more “multicolored”. Most of my instants and sorceries are monocolored, so Ojer pakpatiq ends up doing more than Lilah.
Though I think Ojer PakPatiq was over balanced, it takes so long to flip back from being a land
you're right, I've taken another look and it seems that Lilah works with only a fraction of myh spells
I guess her best place for now is in 99 of [[!omnath locus of all]]
aka. charms_and_ultimatums.dec
then frostfang it is. I think she needs a little bit more support to be a commander of her own and to fit not only in dedicated color mixing decks
I’m just coming back to Magic and looking to rejoin my old playgroup.
Riku seems super fun. Do you have a current decklist that you’ve continued to update as Final Fantasy has several modal spells in it?
@jolly mica meant to tag you above. 👆🏻
I absolutely love Riku of Many Paths, it’s a very unique take on spellslinger.
My list: https://moxfield.com/decks/y_2HFJTYwUCu5VkYXIP4kg
I haven’t found any of the Final Fantasy modal instants/sorceries to be particularly better than what is already in but I’m happy to take suggestions 😏
Hey sorry for such a big delay, I was away doing stuff.
Sure here is my decklist:

The more you choose, the more you get.
This deck is not recommended to people with insecurity problems, since it's not meant to be played like your local "Azorius combo, just let me take my 5th extra turn I promise" deck.
Riku of Many Paths is the commander and an absolute Swiss army knife t...
Problem with riku is that his niche is so narrow that there is a very large overlap between other riku decks or temur spellslingers in general
But with each new modal spell printed his arsenal broadens
As for final fantasy, the tiered spells seem like a nice detour from traditional modal spells as it works more like kicker, but still triggering riku
Other than that the set (+precons) didn't introduce anything flashy except maybe [[!yuna's decision]] if you can utilise use it to full potential
I also updated the main decklist on this post
I find it to be a bit costly, I really think the modal spells are just enablers to dig you through the library until you find value or wincons, the cheaper the better
I picked Riku because his gimmick is a fun deck restriction, which forces me to be more crafty maybe not with the modal spells but other tools in the deck
Otherwise I would play Kalamax or something
For that CMC I’d play [[Sakashima’s Will]] with a pinger out such as [[Guttersnipe]], and follow it by a few cheap spells to turn birds into damage
