#Help needed for a spellslinger deck

I like izzet decks and spellslinger decks, so for my new deck i wanted to build around Mizzix of the Izmagnus but while building it I started having the feeling that no matter how i built this deck i would create a target on myself

for context i mostly play at my LGS with random people, i have a small playgroup but we play less often, so i can't really talk myself out of the target

does anyone have any experience with piloting Mizzix or maybe an alternative for a commander? I was thinking Vadrik but the day/night mechanic sound like hell in commander games

Edit: almost forgot, my idea is a budget semi casual deck, not competitive but capable of holding its ground, preferably not something that wins with storm (not because i don't like it mostly because of its "infamy" within the comminity) but i was planning to play thousand year storm because honestly it looks fun

The base issue with slinger is that people don't like to play against it because it takes too much time. I tend to view slinger as best off quietly building towards 'one big turn.'

#

When built in such a manner, you're looking more toward quietly building a density of cards to 'storm off' with into a win. People still may not enjoy that and are liable to target once they recognize how hardcore storm the deck is, that's something that's somewhat difficult to avoid

#

So maybe look toward building a defensive structure that can support storming off, rather than going hard into storming off.

#

Tbh tho, I killed my budget storm deck ages ago. It just was either unfun for me or unfun for everyone else.

#

So maybe you could brainstorm what commander could pull a more gradual gameplay style, akin to talrand

Or commanders that reward that type of thing, depending on your approach. If you were playing a sort of tokens-generated-by-card-draw-spells deck then you could pick a commander based on how you think they'll be received. I don't know Locust God's reputation, could be bad. I've never heard anything bad about brudiclad except that it can cause complex rules situations occasionally.

Does it have to be Izzet? Kykar is pretty good for spells but also makes tokens and supports most of the "cast xy, create token" creatures, like the new Iconoclast, Young Pyro, Monastery Mentor and Talrand.

Granted, enchantments that do it are better than creatures

#

Since it makes recovery from wipes usually very easy

Hmm, i kinda don't know about these 😛 care to give an example?

i could go with kess for instance, and adding a graveyard subtheme to keep my creatures alive, but i already have an grixis deck plus basically every deck i have already got a semi-graveyard subtheme, haha

fossil isle

oh well, true. i forgot that exists^^

solemn idol
#

Oh yeah, shark typhoon exists

#

I forget that for some reason

Kess could also run the new Tor Wauki, which seems somewhat nice depending on spells you intend to sling

temur could be fun with riku but it sound almost too powerful

Saheeli as another card that does the thing. There aren't a ton for instants and sorceries, given that those have the most potential to go nuts and wotc knows that

#

Mostly they're creatures that do it

#

But that's fine, you should also be able to recover from wipes just by finding more, given that your filler cards are all card draw

paper moth
#

... you're probably right with the idea that those type of cards is the safe way to go, the only problem is that i'm not sure if i want a token deck since that's what it looks like it would become

solemn idol
#

Yeah, pretty much. That's the most casual friendly way to build that type of strat

#

I haven't seen slug burn in action to be sure on whether it's worth it

fossil isle
#

You dont have to go all in with tokens either, but in my experience its always good to have some permanents that put out tokens, if for blocks only

solemn idol
#

Brudiclad turning all the tokens into the best token seems lit :^]

fossil isle
#

true^^

#

and nobody expects it to be spellslinger

solemn idol
#

An army of karnstructs sounds terrifying

paper moth
solemn idol
#

Oh wait, brudiclad turns treasures into creature tokens or vice versa

#

LOL

paper moth
#

talking about treasure there's Galazeth Prismari, izzet "ramp" could be fun

#

also them being tokens i wonder if there's some kind of shenanigans i could make by producing consistently other colour of mana...

fossil isle
#

You could run sunburst cards for that but it seems a bit removed from your main strategy and it probably wouldnt be super effective

#

like [[engineered explosives]] for example

ok, i think i got the gist: either one turn bigspell/lot of spells or a more casual magecraft deck

#

to boil down the options

fossil isle
#

If you plan on 1kyr-Storm, black or white would probably help as they have a good amount of tutors for that one

solemn idol
#

Only issue with thousand year storm is that it's a 'kill me' flag

#

Which it sounds like has been the exact issue
