(Just delete it if its in here somewhere, i couldnt find it in a search tho)
Simple, two players per matrix. Matrix is the same size as two joined together)

Sort of ties into team modes I guess. Tetris Ultimate apparently had versus mode support for 4 players on this, but it doesn't need to be versus, could be something to play with a friend instead of the solo modes.

In Tetris Party, both players had free range of the entire 20x20 matrix, while other games including Tetris Ultimate and Tetris GIANT (arcade) each player was restricted to their side of the matrix, with two colums in the middle shared between the two. In Tetris Effect players dropped their pieces in sequence in the connected matrix. the other games had simultaneous play.

Tetris Party also divided the pieces between the two players which forces some cooperation (dunno if I like this aspect or not). In this image, the player on the left only gets OJL the other player gets SZT and both get I, though peices can change sides via Hold, since hold is shared (again, not sure if I like that part or not)

(Hudson held a high score competition for co-op mode, and because of this, while you could play with an AI partner, the AI goes full derp once you reach a certain level to prevent players from likely achieving a high score without an actual partner- so I never really got to truly experience it)

Don't forget about my boy TGM

Official Japanese arcade fastest TGM2+ Doubles time. We could have had 3:14 or 3:15, tragic.

Ah nice, I've only played TGM3 which I don't think has that?

  1. impossible to manage with ping to share board — definitely SOLO mode.
  2. but you can't really use single keyboard to bind two TETR.IO controls
  3. idk but it might be not able to support multiple input device neither because it is browser based

  1. I think it would work fine just based on my experience with the game., though any connection issues would really hurt playability
  2. there's more than enough keys on a keyboard to do this, but you can also just use controllers or a keyboard and a controller like I already do
  3. you can already put in inputs from controller and keyboard at the same time or any combination of keys on the keyboard at the same time. Two player games played on a single keyboard were common in the early days of the PC
#

Tetr.io supports pretty much any gamepad type input device you can plug into your PC and use with anything else

#

Local 2player (or by yourself if you're really crazy enough) would work, but I think it would be very possible to make it online playable.

But this game really could use something you can do with friends. Teams is a hot debate but this would do something for the limited non-versus experience available in the game right now

# hallow portal mmmm ok acceptable

It's been done ina semi recent tetris game, Tetris effect has a similar mode (idk if I can link it) https://youtu.be/v6_kLREd-rs

there's no problem with te:c connected style co-op

#

but this is not that

#

yea

marsh heath
#

yeah i thought of connected as well

#

i pointed that out in the OP

#

as noted, in that game, when the fields are combined, you take turns with piece placement

#

other iterations the play is simultaneous

hallow portal
#

the biggest problem there is only one person can place blocks at one time

marsh heath
#

thats what I just said :p

hallow portal
#

h

marsh heath
#

in TGM's doubles, tetris party, and tetris ultimate, it's simultaneous play

#

(ultimate kinda sucks, you only get 1 next peice)

wide oriole
wide oriole
#

yeah lol you'd need several people to really test but it's connected the entire time through

ruby glacier
neon beacon
#

doing this with netcode is tough

#

im sure thats also why TE:C's connected mode is turnbased

#

making something like this not break down with a combination of fast play & network lag is a tough one

#

in most games, rollbacking makes minute differences, because movement tends to be smooth

#

but in tetris movements are atomic

#

rollbacking atomic actions is very unenjoyable

marsh heath
hallow portal
#

that's what we call turn based

#

i mean it's co-op it is normal to see other's piece

marsh heath
#

What I mean is there is still network data flying around from every user, i.e. its tracking your inputs and sending them

#

because we're talking about the netcode/network challenges that would arise from something like this being online

wide oriole
#

well players can easily drop packets and lag for a while in TE:C without interrupting gameplay, that's why when the boards are connected none of the active pieces intersect like they do in TGM doubles/just stack

#

I remember a racing game where it just doesnt check colision, basicaly it's singleplayers but you can see where other players are, this way makes it so that you dont have people complaining about network lag and such

marsh heath
#

That may be why some versions limit players to their side (except for an overlap in the middle) to minimize that?

lucid moon
#

the main problem is probably what if 2 players try to hard drop at the same time, you see your piece drop first but which one is actually there

proud pilot
#

I think turn base is the way to avoid that

marsh heath
#

the problem is the way I see that it really slows the game down waiting for the other player

#

though with tetrio having no delays good players could still go pretty fast

proud pilot
#

i mean

#

in TEC connected mode

#

you can still move your piece and soft drop

#

you just cannot place the piece until it's your turn

hallow portal
#

you got the right point, you cannot place the piece until it's your turn

marsh heath
#

I can see how taking turns does avoid some potential issues, but if we saw something like this I think it would be a lot more fun if it was fully simultaneous

proud pilot
#

actually, now that i think about it, since this feature request is about co op and not something like teams mode, maybe it should be more about cooperation, so simulaneous would make it more fun when you and your friend hard drop at the same time

wise spruce
#

this would be quite fun

#

would want to play

it did occur to me that now that we can set board sizes, we can replicate the 20x20 typically seen in co-op modes, just not actual coop :p

marsh heath
#

somewhat related to this, has local multiplayer features ever been considered? Given that you can connect controllers and also use the keyboard

tender fog
#

A teams-like co-op mode could be pretty cool to have alongside the character system, maybe two people playing different characters could swap in and out to take advantage of both abilities
